I exited the plane shortly after Jinki had. It was a little after four in the afternoon, and the sun was still high in the sky, it's glare shining on the recently polished white tile floors. Somehow getting lost in the blinding glare as we entered the airport through the gate terminal, I realized, the next time we would be entering a plane again would be with Crystal and possibly her daughter. This was it, SHINee would no longer be a five man group anymore from this point on. The reality was a bit harder to swallow than I thought it would be. All five of us walked through the busy airport, everyone around us lost in their own conversations as we carried our bags behind us, kind of in our own world when Key was the one who spoke up first.
"So, who’s calling the hotel? We obviously can’t walk down to the hotel." Key said stopping and Jinki pulled out his cellphone seemingly anticipating this question. Both Jonghyun and Taemin stood with us, seemingly disinterested with the hustle and bustle of the air travelers around them.
"I’ll call the hotel okay? Minho give me the number please?" Jinki asked, his brown eyes flashing toward me. I rattled off the number from memory and Jinki dialed the number before waiting for someone to pick it up. Swiping at the speaker phone option on the LCD screen of his phone, I could hear the line ring twice before Crystal's distinctive voice could be heard.
"We love having you here at the Magic City Inn and Suites. This is Crystal, how can I help you?"
"Uh, hey Crystal, can I get the shuttle please? My flight just landed." Jinki spoke into his phone microphone, looking around at us, meeting each one of our gazes.
"Sure thing, I’ll send someone up. Have got your bags and everything already?"
"Yes, I have. Thank you, I'll be looking out for the shuttle van, bye!" Jinki said as he hung up the phone and turned to us. "Okay, that’s done. Let’s go outside and wait for him."
"Do you think Crystal will be excited to see us?" Jonghyun asked, running a hand through his newly dyed silver hair. It was a new look we all had to get used to, but it was a good look for him, it fit his personality well.
"Yeah, why wouldn’t she be…we’re her all-time favorite K-Pop group and I know she’ll be excited to see me…" I said smiling. I missed Crystal a lot over these past couple of months since I left. I couldn’t wait to see her smiling face again. We all walked outside, the warm breeze hitting us. It was a gorgeous sunny day, the smell in the air made me realize how much I had missed Minot, even if it was ungodly cold in the winter the summers made it worth it. Each of us got lost in our own conversations about the weather by the time the shuttle pulled up. Seeing the shuttle van pull up, we walked toward it as it pulled over to the curb. The van stopped and Tom stepped out.
"Minho, who are these guys with you?" Tom asked, as he walked over to us and tried to help us with our bags.
"Tom! Good to see you! These are my band mates, I never told you this, but I'm a part of a popular K-Pop group. Don't worry about our bags, we've got them." I said, my eyes meeting his as I patiently waited to put my bag into back of the shuttle van. Shoving a twenty into Tom's hand, we all piled into the van and three minutes later we arrived at the hotel. We left our bags in the van for the time being and headed straight inside and the shock on Crystal’s face when she saw not only me but the rest of my band mates was priceless.
"Oh my God! Minho!" Crystal exclaimed, running around the desk and running toward me, stretching her arms out for a hug. I met her embrace and lifted her off the ground, spinning her around, as she felt even lighter than she did before I left. I was so happy to see her finally, my heart swelled with love and her scent hit my nose and I was overcome by excitement. We moved away from each other before things got too awkward. "What are you guys doing here?"
Jinki opened his mouth to speak. "Well we’re here to…" Just then Amanda came out of her office with some paperwork in hand, interrupting Jinki from his thought process.
"Crystal, can you come sign these papers for me please?"
"Oh, sure…" Crystal said as she stepped back behind the desk again. "Sorry Onew..." Her face fell as her eyes looked over the papers to see her termination paperwork. Amanda went back into her office, and a few minutes later Ana and Jim were in the lobby along with some of the housekeepers. Amanda came back out.
"Sorry about that guys..." Amanda began but Crystal shot Amanda a look that interrupted what she was going to say. "Crystal, is there an issue?"
Crystal opened her mouth, tears clearly evident in her eyes. "Termination paperwork? Am I being fired? I don’t understand…"
"No, Crystal, you’re---"
Jinki, seeing Crystal about to have a meltdown took control of the situation, taking the recording contract out of his pocket and putting it down on the counter. "Crystal, you’re leaving, Sony’s signing you to a 3 year contract as the leader of SHINee."
Crystal's mouth snapped shut, as she whipped her head back around to face Jinki and look at the stack of neatly clipped papers that made up the recording contract. Her expression turned from sadness to one of disbelief. "What? What? You’re kidding!" Crystal exclaimed as she grasped the contract and thumbed through it.
"It’s true Crystal, a Sony executive called me two weeks ago and put your two weeks in for you. Today is officially your last day." Amanda said, stepping forward and standing next to Crystal behind the desk.
"Amanda, no…" Crystal frowned.
"Crystal, this is your dream. I don’t want anything to stop you and as much as I love having you here, I don’t want to keep you from your dreams. If things don’t work out for you, we’ll always be glad to have you back here." It warmed my heart to hear Amanda say those words to Crystal. Tears were fresh in her eyes, and Amanda pulled Crystal into a hug and not missing a beat, my old boss, Ana did the same.
"Congratulations Crystal…" Ana said. Jim also congratulated her as Crystal filled out the paperwork dutifully and gave it to Amanda when she finished. Meanwhile Key left us and ran out to the van and grabbed an outfit he had bought for Crystal in New York out of his bag and brought it inside.
"Wow, you guys were prepared…" Amanda said watching Key bring in the outfit. "Crystal why don’t you get out of your work clothes and I’ll take them from you, do you have any other work clothes at home?"
Crystal's eyes met Amanda's as she nodded. "Yeah, I have another work uniform at home I’ll bring it in later tonight..."
Amanda nodded in response before turning to the three of us standing around the desk. Taemin and Jonghyun were helping themselves to the complimentary cookies and fruit punch the hotel provided. They were bringing in our bags from the van prevously. Key went to go scold them, which caused me to shake my head as my eyes briefly followed the sassy diva that was Key.
"Okay, when is she leaving for New York?" Amanda asked, her eyes meeting Jinki's.
"Sunday." Jinki said, as Key joined our side again.
"Okay, I’ll need an address for corporate to send her check to…" Key's eyes lit up.
"Got it." Key said as he grabbed a nearby notepad and pen and scribbled the hotel’s address on it. "You can send it to us and we’ll make sure she gets it." Key said before he looked at me, handing me the outfit for Crystal. "Right Minho?"
I smiled at my hyung. "Of course." I said simply, grabbing the outfit from his hands and handing it over to Crystal. She took the clothes from me and glanced at the size.
"Hopefully it should fit, if it doesn’t…well…I guess you’ll have to just have to go with it until we get to your place." Key said, his eyes meeting Crystal's while tearing the sheet of paper he just wrote the hotel's address on off the tablet and handed it to Amanda.
"Okay…" Crystal then looked tentatively at Amanda, who was glancing at the address. "Am I free to go? Or…" Amanda switched glances from the paper in her hand to Crystal.
"Everything’s signed?" Amanda asked looking through all the papers before nodding. "Yeah, you’re no longer employed here, so go ahead, turn in your uniform and you’re set."
"Okay." Crystal said nodding before walking back around the desk and walking down the hallway where the restrooms were located. "I’ll be right back." Crystal said before disappearing.
"You guys can sit down in the lobby while you’re waiting…" Amanda said, as she nodded toward the lobby behind us.
We sat down in the lobby patiently waiting for Crystal to return so we could get the contract signed. Crystal appeared moments later, the outfit was a perfect fit on her. The black faux leather pants hugged her curvy hips and slim legs while the purple graphic t-shirt accented her narrow waist and voluptuous chest. Her look was complete with a bit of cleavage peaking out at the bottom of the plunging V-line. I didn't see everyone's reactions to the outfit that Key picked out for her because I couldn't take my eyes off of her.
"Oh my God, look at you…that outfit looks great, don’t you agree Jonghyun?"
"Yeah, she’s hot." Jonghyun's statement pulled me out of my trance as I shot a look of contempt at him once I realized what he said.
"Jonghyun!" Key scolded before he switched over to Korean, knowing Crystal couldn’t clearly understand what was being said. Key was basically forcing Jonghyun to apologize to me but I shook my head at Key and told him he didn't have to and that his outfit fit Crystal really well. Key nodded in agreement and nothing else was said. Meanwhile, Jinki had set the contract down on the empty table next to him and looked up at Crystal.
"Crystal, here, come sit next to me and we can go through this contract together." Jinki said, as he patted the couch next to him. Crystal sat down quickly, eager to sign the contract. She grasped the pen that Jinki nearly dropped.
"Crystal, please take the time to read over it, don’t rush…" Jinki cautioned, as he flattened the folded up contract on the black marble table top.
"Shouldn't I have a lawyer or something look over this first? Did you guys?" I looked at Jinki. Our eyes made of contact.
"She’s got a point hyung, we should contact a lawyer." Jonghyun said, speaking what was on my mind.
"It’s not anything different than what we had to sign." Jinki retorted,
"Are you sure about that?" I asked, my eyes meeting the elder's. He nodded.
"Yes Minho, I read over it on the plane. The only thing different is that when I signed my contract I would have to give up my leadership the moment Crystal signed her contract. Her contract states that the moment she signs it she assumes leadership over SHINee…"
"Guys? What are you talking about?" Crystal asked, drawing the attention of every one of us.
"The contract." I said simply, and Crystal nodded before shoving the contract toward Jinki.
"Oh, well I signed it…all the highlighted stuff right?" Crystal asked, her eyes switching between Jinki and the contract that now lay, signed, on the table.
"Crystal, did you read it?" Jinki asked, disbelief in his voice as he pulled the contract to him.
"Yeah," Crystal nodded and swallowed. " I think I got the gist of it." Jinki grabbed her contract and thumbed through it carefully. He frowned slightly as he reached the last page.
"Yeah, it’s signed." Jinki sighed heavily. "Well…I am no longer SHINee’s leader." Jinki announced as he folded the contract back up and shoved it in his bag that was next to him.
"W-what? You mean I'm SHINee's leader now?" Crystal asked in shock as he pointed to herself.
"Um..." I deadpanned.
"You didn’t read the contract did you?" Key blurted out, snapping his eyes at Crystal. Crystal's expression was priceless, it was like a deer caught in headlights. "Well you’re our leader now. You are the oldest out of all of us. I would suggest you start acting like it and start reading though everything you have to sign from now on." Crystal nodded, lowering her head a little as her ego was bruised a little.
"I—I…I’m fucked huh?" Crystal asked, blushing out of embarrassment. Jinki looked at me.
"Minho do you mind if I put my arm around her since you're on the other side of the table?"
"Go ahead." And Jinki cautiously put an arm around her, as he dug out her check out from his bag.
"No, you’re not. When you get a chance to read over the contract I would advise you do so, but there’s another matter of business we have to conduct. Here is your check." Jinki said as he slid the check over to her, face up. You could hear a pin drop in the lobby it was so quiet as all eyes were on Crystal. Her eyes scanned over the check.
"Oh. My. God." She looked up at me, then at Jinki, then Jonghyun, Key, and Taemin. "Is this for real?"
"This is real Crystal. The check is real. You just won't be able to cash or deposit it just yet." Jinki said, as he withdrew his arm from around her.
This caused everyone to laugh.
For the first time I realized, this was the end of one chapter of my life and the beginning of another. What would the future hold for us with Crystal fronting the band? Would we be successful as a group? Would this experience bring Crystal and I closer? Or will it drive us apart?
Our fate now lied with Crystal and deep down inside, I was uncertain. I knew I shouldn't be, but part of me wondered if Crystal could handle the pressure that this new life would put her under. There were times where I wished I had pursued a simpler life.
As everyone got up from the table, Crystal turned in her uniform and bid her goodbyes, knowing that the next time she would see anyone was when we would be headed toward the airport in three short days. Amanda had already booked a couple of rooms for us on Sunday night.
With a little smoozing by Key, he convinced Tom to take the him and Taemin to Crystal's apartment. Crystal had the same Buick LaCross I had given her months prior, it allowed enough room for Jonghyun, Jinki and I to ride along with Crystal. Crystal walked to my side and pushed her keys into my hand, pulling me out of my thoughts.
"Hey, why don't you drive, I'm sure you miss driving your car." I smiled down at her and I knew things would be okay. I took the keys in my hand and leaned down to place a kiss on her forehead.
"I'd love to." I said, my eyes meeting hers before we walked together, our arms linked.
Even though I was still pretty horrible at pronouncing a lot of English words(although my understand of the English language as a whole has improved a lot), and the fact that I was in a sexual relationship with someone who was completely different from me in every way, shape, and form is still daunting at times. I honestly wouldn't have it any other way. This whole experience has been a stretching one, but I'm learning to follow my heart and to try new things.
I am a better person because of it, and though, I'm miles away from everything I've ever known I've learned that Crystal is my home away from home and that anywhere that we are together feels like home to me.
As the popular saying goes, home is where the heart is...and I'm finding out, that it's the truth.
