Part 13
Ruben was waiting in the chapel when Clay finally arrived. They looked at each other, both remembering what had happened the last time they were in the same room together.
"Ruben..." Clay forced a smile. "You made it. Looking good."
He turned away from him. "Whatever."
"So you decided to be my best man. I'm surprised you want to be near me after what happened."
Ruben sighed. "Yeah, well..."
"Um...has Amber shown up yet?"
"Of course she's here. It's her wedding after all. By the way, that black eye's looking a hell of a lot better."
Clay finally lost his patience. "O.K. That's it. I want to know what's going on with you. First, you hit me, then there's your sarcastic attitude...if you have something against me marrying Amber-"
"I have absolutely nothing against you marrying Amber! It's her jerk of a fiance I have the problem with!"
"Me?!"
"Yeah, you! Amber's a great, sweet, and charming woman...and you are not being fair to her!"
"How the hell am I doing that?"
"By not telling her what you did to Kim!"
Clay smiled. "So she did tell you. I figured she would. Big deal. What's one person going to do about it?"
"You've already seen what I can do, Clay. Wanna try me again?"
"No thanks. So Kim brainwashed you into believing that I 'raped' her. That's fine. You two go on believing whatever the hell you want. But I know the truth and she knows the truth. She meant absolutely nothing to me! She wanted us to be each other's firsts and I granted her wish. So she got upset and cried rape. You think I care? Hell no! She was...how can I put this in a way you'll understand? Oh, yeah, She was a ho, a trick, a piece of ass-"
Ruben grabbed him by his jacket. "You'd better take every word of that back right now!"
"What's the matter, Ruben? You can't handle the fact that she's damaged goods now? You can't handle that I got to screw her before you did?"
He shoved him up against the wall. "Boy, you are about one second from making me break both my feet off in your ass! I'll be so far up there, you'll be tasting my kneecaps!"
"Go ahead, Ruben! Hit me! Kick my ass! You want to fight me? You want to defend Kim's honor so badly? Go ahead! As far as I'm concerned, you can have the bitch!"
Ruben reached back to punch him good...
"Excuse me?"
They turned to see a young woman standing there.
"Clay Aiken?"
"Yeah."
"I'm Amanda Johnson. I'll be presiding over your wedding today."
"Nice to meet you."
"Is this your best man?" She said, pointing to Ruben.
"Unfortunately, yes."
"Well, is your lucky bride here?"
"Yeah, she's the third room down the hall." Ruben spoke up. "I brought her here."
"All right. We're ready whenever you are."
"Thank you." Clay said.
As she walked away, Ruben reluctantly let go of Clay.
"You are so lucky that woman came in here and saved your sorry ass, boy."
"Whatever. Speaking of sorry, where's Kim?"
"Luckily for you, she's not here. She couldn't stand to see Amber make the biggest mistake of her life by marrying you."
"So what's your excuse for showing up?"
"We had a promise, dawg. Whenever one of us got married, we'd be each other's best man. I came here because of that promise and that promise alone."
"Fine. But after today...you can consider our friendship over. I am so done with you."
"Hey, fine with me."
Clay turned away from his now former friend.
Ruben simply shook his head. "Amber is way too good for you, you lousy son of a bitch."
Meanwhile, Kim had just tearfully finished telling Amber her story. From the first rape to the confrontation, to the engagement party and the ladies' room encounter, to the picture on the internet.
Ashleigh couldn't believe it.
"I...I don't understand. Why would Clay want to do all these horrible things to you?" She asked.
"That I still don't know. One time he said that he knew I wanted him to be my first as he'd wanted me to be his. Yeah, we were close...but I hadn't quite thought that far ahead. Hell, I honestly never expected to be in a relationship with Clay. But now...we'll never know what might have been. He destroyed our friendship, and any chance we might have had of being more."
"Kim..."
She was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Miss Lindsey?"
"Yeah?"
"We're ready to start whenever you are."
"Thank you."
She turned to Kim. "Kim...I can't do this. I can't marry Clay knowing what he did to you!"
"Amber-"
"But I just can't walk out on him like this. He at least deserves a reason why."
"Wait, Amber."
"What?"
"You should know that...Clay doesn't know I'm here."
"What? Why the hell did you come then?"
"1. Because I wanted to see the look on his face when you dump his ass..."
Amber giggled.
"And 2...I thought you should know just what kind of man you're about to marry."
She didn't know how to respond to that.
Kim picked up her bouquet and walked over to Amber.
"Girl, if you still want to marry him...that's your business. At least he cares about you if no one else."
She gave Amber one last hug, then walked out the door.
Amber knew she was screwed. If she married Clay, she'd be hurting her best friend. If she didn't, she'd be breaking the heart of the man she loved.
Suddenly it hit her.
She picked up her bouquet, gave herself one last glance over and opened the door...
