"What if I told you
Your tears haven't been ignored,
And everything that was taken
Can be restored."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hey," Kelly smiled as she got out of her car with Jason and Kate to find Mr. Smith, the hospital's attorney pulling up at the same time.
"Perfect timing," he nodded, holding out his hand.
Kelly shook it, wincing at the sudden flashes of light, "We should get inside."
"Yea," Mr. Smith agreed, ushering her towards the hospital.
Kelly looked back to make sure Jason had Kate. She smiled at her brother's arm that was placed protectively around the other blonde. "Thanks," she nodded as Mr. Smith held the door open for them once they reached the building. She rubbed her eyes trying to get the flashes from the paparazzi camera's to stop flashing.
"Well...that was fun," Kate joked.
Kelly laughed softly.
"They shouldn't be here," Jason turned to Mr. Smith. "I mean, with kids and their families coming in and out...that's just not right."
"I know. I'm gonna see what I can do," Mr. Smith assured. "How has New York? Was it bad?"
"Not really," he shook his head. "We tried to get in and out of everywhere we went pretty fast so they didn't really have time to track us too well."
"That's good," Mr. Smith nodded, turning to Kelly. "Are you ready to get started?"
"Yea," she nodded, looking at Jason. "Y'all are good?"
"Yea, we're just gonna go hang out in the game room," he replied. "You're gonna come meet us after?"
"Of course," Kelly smiled softly before following Mr. Smith to one of the hospital's conference rooms where her lawyer was already seated, talking to Dr. Lopez. "Hi," she greeted politely.
"Hey," they each replied, giving her a quick hug before they all got situated.
"How's everything looking?"
"Everything is going very smoothly," her lawyer assured. "I talked to guy that was in charge of the investigation last night. They're just about ready to finish it. They did hit a minor hiccup, though."
"A hiccup?"
"Dealing with how long it took for you to get Alex back to the hospital, and whether or not that had any effect on her death."
"We got her back as soon as we could," Kelly argued. "The weather...they weren't flying out...we had to drive."
"I know," he assured. "I know. They questioned Dr. Lansing about it. She vouched for you, saying that you did all you could. Dr. Lopez just informed me that they also had a few questions for him this morning."
Dr. Lopez nodded, "Yes, and I informed them that the length of time that it took you to get her back no way affected her health, and that you did the right thing by driving instead of waiting for a flight."
"Thanks," Kelly smiled weakly, finding a slight amount of relief of Dr. Lopez's assurances against her worst fear. "So, um, if they questioned y'all, why haven't they questioned Carrie and I? I mean, aren't we like the lead suspects or something like that?"
"Yes, they spoke to me and to Carrie's lawyer," her lawyer nodded. "They agreed that they would refrain from dragging y'all into this unless evidence showed up, supporting the fact that you did something wrong, but nothing has come up. Since the two of you were so close to Alex, we just thought it best to not put you through that unless it was necessary."
Kelly nodded in understanding, "Thank you because I seriously don't think I could've dealt with that."
"Just doing my job," he smiled.
"Is that...is that it?" Kelly looked at the three of them hopefully.
"That's it," her lawyer assured. "I just need to talk to Mr. Smith about a couple things, but it's nothing you need to be here for. It'll just bore you."
Kelly laughed softly, "You know me well."
"Just doing my job," he repeated, chuckling.
"Do you want me to walk you to the game room?" Dr. Lopez offered as he stood.
"Um, actually, I'm just gonna call Care will quick. I promised her I'd fill her in on everything."
"Well, you can have this room as long as you need," Mr. Smith offered. "We'll just go in my office."
"Thanks," Kelly gave each of them one of them a hug as they walked out of the room. "Seriously, thanks for everything."
Dr. Lopez offered a smile as he closed the door for her, leaving her in the empty room.
Kelly pulled out her phone, dialing Carrie's number as she sat back down.
"Hey," she heard the country singer smile on the other side of the phone.
"Hey," Kelly replied, shakily, sniffing back the tears she felt forming in her eyes.
"Kell? What's wrong? What happened?" Carrie asked quickly. "Are you ok? Are you hurt? What is it?"
"No, I talked with the lawyers today--"
"Why are you crying? Did the police find something? Are they pressing charges? Kell, what's wrong?"
"Care..." Kelly giggled, wiping her eyes. "Care, breathe."
"Happy tears," Carrie sighed in relief. "Thank God for happy tears."
Kelly smiled, "Did you have a lot of caffeine or something this morning?"
"No, you just scared me. I don't like hearing you upset when I'm not there...well, I don't like hearing you upset ever, but even more so when I'm not there."
"Well, I'm not upset," Kelly assured. "Just really, really relieved. I feel like I can finally relax, you know?"
"What did they say?"
"That the investigation is about to be closed, and we aren't in fault for any wrong doing."
"Really?"
"Yep."
"Wow..." Carrie took a deep breath. "That is so good to hear."
"You feel like you can breathe again, right?"
"Exactly."
Kelly smiled, "I miss you."
"Why? Because if I were there, we'd be so happy we'd be having sex right now on that big table in the conference room?" she teased.
"Yep," Kelly nodded.
Carrie giggled, "I miss you too. Just a couple more days, though."
"How was the show last night?"
"You mean to tell me you didn't youtube my performance?" Carrie asked, feigning hurt.
"No, I did, they just weren't posted yet this morning."
Carrie laughed, "It went really well. The crowd was great."
"Any problems?"
"Not really. Just typical paparazzi at the hotel and stuff, but nothing really major."
"They're outside the hospital right now."
"What?" Carrie asked in shock. "That's just...I don't even have words for that. They shouldn't be there."
"I know. The hospital's trying to take care of it. It really surprised me though, because it wasn't really that bad in New York."
"Did you watch tv this morning?"
"I'm not a big tv person, you know that...besides, I was kinda busy cursing at your fans for taking so long to update their videos."
Carrie smiled, "You know I love you, right?"
"It's a hazard of the job."
"Dork," Carrie laughed.
"But it works out great because I love you too," she smiled. "So what was on tv this morning?"
"Mrs. Reed."
"Oh."
"Yea...that's probably why the paparazzi are over there."
"Well, hopefully the police will announce soon that we're innocent and this will all just go away."
"Yea," Carrie agreed.
"So, you have one more show tomorrow night, then you're coming home?"
"Yea, I fly back the next morning."
"An early flight?"
"An early flight," she nodded.
"Good."
"So, you're about to go play with the kids over there?"
"Yea, I'm excited. I haven't been here in a while."
"I'm sure they'll love that you're back. Did you manage to get Kate to go with y'all?"
"Yea, she's with Jason in the game room right now. I was talking to her earlier. She's really excited about her big date tonight."
"That's good. I'm glad she's having fun."
"Me too."
"Ok, well, I've got to go. I promised my band I'd take them out to lunch, and they're all sitting, pouting in the hall of the hotel acting like they haven't eaten in years," Carrie laughed, looking out the peephole of her door.
"Alright. I'll call you later tonight?"
"Sounds good."
"Ok."
"Ok."
"I love you," Kelly grinned.
"I love you too," Carrie smiled.
"Have fun."
"You too."
"Bye."
"Bye," Carrie giggled, finally hanging up the phone.
"And on the way down,
I saw you,
And you saved me from myself,
And I won't forget the way."
"Whoa...I think it's a ghost..."
Kelly turned around at the cocky voice, "Whoa...I think it's a dork..."
Luke turned around to look behind him.
"What?"
"Just looking for the mirror," he shrugged.
Kelly laughed, reaching out and ruffling his hair.
"Where have you been?"
"Around," she replied simply, following him to the game room. "How are you feeling?"
"Great. I get to go home next week."
"Home? Like for good?"
"Yep," he nodded. "Full remission."
"Wow..."
"So...do you ever have any tour stops in Washington?" he asked curiously.
"I usually do, yea."
"I get full backstage privileges, right?"
"Oh totally," she nodded. "If you promise me one thing..."
"What's that?"
"You've gotta stop growing, kid. You're freaking taller than me now," she teased.
He smiled, "I hear girls like tall guys."
"You are way too young to be thinking about girls."
"You sound like my mom," he laughed, watching as several younger kids ran up to Kelly as they walked into the room.
Kelly smiled, picking one of them up, "Hey guys."
"Man, you would think you haven't been here in forever or something..."
"Shut up, Luke," she pushed him playfully. "Now that you're better I can so kick your butt."
"Oh, whatever," he rolled his eyes as they walked to one of the small tables.
Kelly smiled at Kate and Jason who were playing legos with two little girls.
"Is that your brother's girlfriend?" Luke asked, curiously.
"What?" Kelly snorted with laughter. "No. She's one of my good friends. She also sings backup for me on tour and stuff."
"So she's single?"
"When did you become such a Cassanova?"
"Hey, I'm growing up. I even had a chin hair the other day."
"You sure it wasn't just some dirt?"
Luke narrowed his eyes, "You know, I was going to offer something, but you're not cool anymore."
Kelly laughed, "I'm way cooler than you."
"Am not."
"Are too."
"Am not."
"Am not."
"See," he grinned.
"Damn it," Kelly cursed. "That normally works."
"Yea, if you're playing with a five year old, maybe."
"I get fooled on that all the time."
Luke looked at her pointedly.
"Oh shut up," she sat down with the little girl in her lap. "So what were you gonna offer."
"Well, since I'm leaving next week, I was wondering if we could visit Alex one more time..."
"You know, I think that's a great idea," Kelly nodded. "We can go later this afternoon, how's that sound?"
"Good," he smiled.
"Ok, so what do y'all wanna play first?" she asked, looking around the table of children.
"Are you ok?" Kate asked softly as she and Jason stood on either side of Kelly, several feet away from Alex's grave to give Luke a moment of privacy.
"Yea," Kelly nodded, wiping away a couple of stray tears. "I've been coming here a lot lately. It gets easier every time."
Jason wrapped an arm around her as Kate did the same.
"Luke asked if you were single," Kelly noted with a slight smile.
"Did you tell him I have a hot date tonight?"
"I didn't want to break his heart."
Jason chuckled softly.
"He's leaving in a week..."
"Leaving?"
"He's in remission," Kelly nodded.
"Well, that's good," Kate pointed out.
"He lives in Washington," Jason explained.
"Oh...I'm sorry," Kate rubbed her back. "That's gotta be hard."
"It'd be selfish for me to want him to stay, though," Kelly frowned.
"You both shared a big loss together...you're connected through that...that's not being selfish, that's just being human."
Kelly watched, taking a step forward as Luke turned away from the grave. She offered a smile as she wrapped an arm around him, "You're good?"
"Yea, I just..." he glanced at Kate nervously, wiping his cheeks. "I had something in my eye."
"You know," Kate began, thoughtfully. "There's something very sexy about a man who is strong enough to cry in front of others."
"I've always noticed that girls dig sensitive guys," Jason commented.
"There's just something hot about it," Kate shrugged in reply.
Kelly smiled at the pair of them in thanks, "How about we go sneak you some ice cream before we go back? I'm talking about the real stuff...non of that hospital food nonsense."
"Sounds good," Luke nodded, not bothering to wipe away the last few tears that were falling down his cheeks.
