"I come around all broken down and
Crowded out, and you're comfort.
Sometimes the place I go
Is so deep and dark and desperate
I don't know, I don't know,
How every day...you save my life."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sh--" Kelly bit her bottom lip to keep from cursing as she stared at the large screen before her, concentrating hard. Her fingers moved quickly, matching the colors as they lit up.
"You suck," Luke elbowed her, trying to knock off her rhythm as he battled her in guitar hero.
"I doubt your mom would approve of you talking like that," Kelly teased.
"I'll just tell her I learned it from you."
Kelly laughed, her eyes narrowing as the song came to an end. She raised her hands in victory when she was announced as the winner, "Bam. In your face."
"Wow, you beat a little kid...aren't you proud."
Kelly grinned, reaching out to ruffle his hair, "Don't be a poor loser."
"Kell," Carrie interrupted.
"Yea?" she turned to her.
Carrie nodded towards Luke's parents that were talking to another set of parents in the back of the room.
"I'm coming," Kelly smiled before turning back to Luke. "Sorry, my man, duty calls."
"Who am I gonna play? None of the kids are as good as you."
"Look, Kate will play you," Kelly motioned to her from across the room. "She's pretty good."
"Kate?" Luke questioned, looking behind him nervously at the tall blonde that was walking towards them. "What do I do? Do I let her win?"
"No," Kelly laughed softly. "Don't do that. She hates that. She's pretty competitive like me. Just relax, and remember to breathe."
"Breathe, ok, got it," he nodded.
Kelly giggled, ruffling his hair once more before turning back to Carrie, "Ready?"
"Yep," she smiled, taking her arm and walking towards Luke's parents as the other couple they were talking to walked away.
"Kelly," his mother smiled as they joined them. "Thank you so much for all of this. It was really, very sweet of you."
"It was actually Care's idea."
"Hi," Carrie held out her hand, greeting them.
"Carrie," Luke's father shook her hand. "It's so nice to meet you. We've heard a lot about you."
"Uh-oh..."
Kelly laughed softly.
"So which one is Kate?" his mom asked curiously.
Kelly pointed towards Kate and Luke who were now caught up in the video game.
"So that's what my future daughter-in-law looks like," she nodded. "It's nice to know these things."
They all laughed.
"Yea, Luke's definitely crushed out pretty hard," Kelly nodded. "The first time is always great."
Carrie smiled at her.
"So we wanted to thank the two of you for all that you've done," Luke's father spoke up. "Not just for Luke, but for the hospital. You two girls have really gone out of your way, and it is seriously, very much appreciated."
"We always have a blast over here, so really, it's no trouble for us at all," Kelly replied.
"We have something for y'all," Carrie noted. "A kind of going away present."
"Girls--" his father started to protest.
"No, no, it's not just for y'all," Kelly explained. "Care and I have been really involved with the hospital this year, especially after becoming youth ambassadors for it, and then the concert we have coming up, and we have been so thankful for everything we've learned from volunteering here. So we wanted to come up with a way to make sure we give back to it every year."
"Yea," Carrie nodded. "And we realized how much of a toll this all takes on the families as well as the children, not just emotionally, but also financially, so we thought we should try and help give back a little...so we decided to set up a scholarship fund."
"A full paid scholarship to one of the kids that is released from the hospital each year," Kelly explained. "And honestly, we couldn't think of anyone that would be more deserving of the first scholarship than Luke."
"Oh...thank you," Luke's mom started to tear up as she pulled the Texan into a tight hug. "Thank you so much."
Kelly smiled, sniffing back tears, "Like I said. He deserves it. That kid is gonna do great things one day."
His mom pulled Carrie into a hug as well, "Thank you."
"You have no idea how grateful we are for this," his dad smiled, wrapping an arm around his wife as she let go of Carrie. "It couldn't have come at a better time."
Kelly looked at the pair of them, confusedly.
"I'm pregnant!" Luke's mother exclaimed excitedly, quickly covering her mouth with a giggle, making sure nobody else had overheard.
"Oh my God," Kelly pulled her into another hug. "Congratulations. Does Luke know?"
"No, we were gonna surprise him when we got home," she explained, taking a step back.
"He's gonna be so thrilled," Kelly nodded. "He's always wanted a little brother or sister."
"Yea, we can't wait to tell him."
"Well, congratulations again," Kelly smiled, feeling Carrie tug on her arm. "We'll catch up before y'all leave, ok?"
"Of course," they nodded before the two singers walked away.
"The scholarship was a great idea," Carrie smiled softly as they walked to the punch table.
"Yea, well, we were getting changed to come here, and I still hadn't figured out what I wanted to get them as a going away gift, so it was the first thing I came up with."
"I think it's great," Carrie nodded, fixing her a drink and handing it to her. "And it's gonna help a lot of families in the future, so thank you for letting me help you out with it."
Kelly smiled, "Well, thank you for wanting to help out with it."
"Ah!" Carrie ducked behind Kelly as a couple kids ran by, chasing each other with silly string.
Kelly laughed, "You ok?"
"I hate silly string," she scrunched her nose.
"Why?"
"I had a can blow up once."
"A can of silly string blew up on you?"
"Yes."
"So, really, you're don't hate it...you're just scared of it," Kelly teased.
Carrie huffed.
Kelly giggled, "I'm just joking, Care. It's ok. I'll totally protect you from the silly string."
"Promise?"
"I promise," she nodded, wrapping a loose arm around her.
"How much longer until they have to leave for their flight?" Carrie asked curiously
"About forty-five minutes," Kelly replied mechanically after looking at her clock.
Carrie wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer, "You're ok?"
Kelly nodded, watching Luke play guitar hero with Kate, "I'm gonna miss him."
"I know," Carrie's hand soothed over her side.
"Shh..." Carrie whispered softly, noting the tears in the short Texan's eyes as Luke walked around to everybody, telling them goodbye.
"I'm not ready to say goodbye," Kelly replied.
"It's going to be ok," Carrie assured, rubbing her back.
"Care..."
"You're gonna be ok," Carrie promised as Luke finally made his way towards them.
"Hey," he greeted softly.
"Hey," Carrie smiled.
"Thank you so much for the party. I had a lot of fun."
"We're glad you enjoyed it," Carrie nodded, giving him a hug. "Have a safe trip home, and remember to keep in touch, ok?"
"I will," he nodded, turning to Kelly. "So..."
"So..." Kelly repeated.
"I guess this is goodbye?"
"I guess so," she nodded, her jaw twitching.
"I, um, I wanted to thank you...for everything."
"Luke..."
"No, I just...my parents worked very hard to be able to afford all of this, so they weren't always able to be here for me, but that was ok, because when they weren't here, I had you and Alex and you...you two were like family to me...are like family..." he swallowed hard. "So thank you."
Kelly pulled him into a tight hug, feeling her eyes start to sting, "You make sure and behave for your parents, ok?"
"I will," he nodded against her shoulder. "You're gonna come visit when you're up there on tour, right?"
"I will; I promise," Kelly swore before pulling back with a sniff. "And I don't wanna ever see you in this hospital again...got it?"
"Got it," he laughed softly, quickly wiping his eyes. "Can you, um...can you do me one last favor?"
"Of course."
"Can you give this to Kate?" he asked, handing her a sheet of paper. "It's my number."
Kelly laughed, "Deal."
"Thanks," Luke smiled. "And, one more thing..."
"Ok."
"Can you remind Alex that I haven't forgotten about her, that I just had to go home, but I'll always remember her?"
"Of course," Kelly swallowed the lump in her throat.
"So I guess...I'll be seeing ya..."
"You can count on it," Kelly nodded, smoothing a hand over his hair before he turned and walked away.
"You ok?" Carrie asked softly.
"No," Kelly replied honestly.
++++++++++++
"Shh..." Carrie wrapped her arms firmly around Kelly from behind, holding her as they stood before Alex's grave. "Baby, it's ok."
Kelly shook her head as the tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I know this is hard, but this is different," Carrie whispered, holding her as close as she could, molding her body around Kelly's protectively. "He's not leaving forever. He's going back home. He's healthy, Kell."
"I know, I just..." her voice cracked.
"He means a lot to you," Carrie nodded. "I know that. He's kinda one of the last connections you have left with Alex."
Kelly whimpered softly.
"Shh, baby," Carrie kissed her behind her ear. "It's ok."
"It's hard," Kelly admitted.
"I know," Carrie kissed her shoulder. "Kinda reminds you of losing Alex, a little, huh?"
Kelly nodded.
"Yea, me too," Carrie replied, feeling Kelly's hands slide over her own, lacing their fingers together comfortingly. "But you've gotta remember that this is different, ok?"
"I know..."
"It's still hard though, I know," Carrie pressed their cheeks together. "Why don't we head back to your place and curl up in bed together and have that movie marathon?"
"You promised hot chocolate," Kelly reminded, sniffing.
"Don't worry, I didn't forget," Carrie assured as Kelly pulled out of her arms, taking her hand instead. "Feel a little better now?"
"Yea," Kelly wiped her eyes. "Thanks for coming with me."
"Thanks for letting me," Carrie smiled, giving her hand a gentle squeeze as they walked back to the car.
"Show me how to lie,
Youre getting better all the time."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kelly stretched, kissing Carrie's forehead.
Carrie groaned, pulling her back to her.
Kelly laughed softly, rubbing her back, "Wake up sleepy head."
Carrie shook her head, holding onto her tightly.
"You ok?" Kelly asked, kissing her forehead again, noting the beads of sweat that had started to form. "You're warm."
"Yea, I'm fine...just tired..." she mumbled, snuggling into her neck. "How are you?"
"A lot better," Kelly nodded. "Thanks for last night."
"Anytime," Carrie replied, kissing her neck softly.
Kelly's eyes closed as Carrie's lips made their way across her skin, "Don't you have a photo shoot this morning?"
"Yea," she grumbled, stopping.
Kelly laughed, "Well, how about I go put on some coffee, and you go take a shower to help you wake up?"
"Or we can just stay in bed and have sex all day."
"If you're too tired to just stand there and look your normal gorgeous self while someone takes a picture of you, then you're definitely too tired for sex."
"Not nice."
Kelly kissed her forehead a third time, giggling, "I just don't wanna be the reason you get in trouble."
"Fine..." Carrie sighed dramatically, rolling onto her back. She smiled as she caught the Texan's eye.
Kelly smiled back, linking their fingers together.
"So...what are the chances of me getting a bagel with my coffee?"
"I might be able to work something out," Kelly nodded.
"Toasted in the oven?"
"I know how you like your bagel," she poked her side playfully.
Carrie giggled.
Kelly leaned down, kissing her softly.
"And maybe some fruit on the side?" Carrie suggested as Kelly pulled back.
Kelly laughed, "Deal, but you've gotta get your butt up."
Carrie nodded, reaching up to kiss her again, "Thank you."
"You're welcome," she gave her hand a gentle squeeze before letting it go and rolling out of bed. She closed the bedroom door on the way out, rubbing her eyes tiredly as she made her way to the kitchen. She cocked her head to the side when she found Kate sitting at the island, eating a bowl of cereal. "Hey."
Kate jumped, looking up.
"Sorry," Kelly smiled, turning on the coffee.
"No, it's ok," she smiled back. "I just...I slept on the couch last night...I hope that's ok?"
"On the couch?" Kelly questioned, pulling the bagels out of the fridge and putting two on a tray before placing them into the oven. "We do have a guest bedroom that you know you're more than welcome to use...or in that case, your boyfriend's bedroom."
Kate blushed, moving her cereal around the bowl with her spoon.
"Everything ok?"
"I'm sorry I just crashed here without asking..."
Kelly frowned, "Since when do you have to ask? Kate, I gave you and Jill a key way back when because you are welcome here anytime you need or want, no permission needed."
Kate nodded, reaching into her pocket for something. She pulled her hand out, holding it open to Kelly, revealing a key, "I, um...it was in the key drawer. I just never use the key drawer because I always throw mine wherever, that's why I'm always loosing them. I was cleaning the kitchen yesterday and I found it. I figured you'd want it back."
Kelly closed Kate's hand around the key, "You keep it. Like you said, you're always loosing your keys. Now you'll have an extra."
She nodded, swallowing hard.
"Kate, why did you sleep on the couch last night?" Kelly asked gently, her hand still over the taller blonde's.
"I don't know," she replied softly.
"Are you and Jason still arguing about yesterday? Because if that's the case, I can chew him out right now if you want."
She gave a small smile, "No, it's just...I didn't want to give him the wrong idea by crawling into his bed in the middle of the night."
"The wrong idea being that you're his girlfriend?"
"No...that I wanted...that I came here for...something..."
"Ah," Kelly nodded, realizing where she was getting at. "Can I ask why did you come here? I mean, not that you need a reason, like I said, you're welcome anytime, it's just...I'm guessing there was a reason for you to come by yourself in the middle of the night."
"I don't know...The house just felt empty when I got there last night, so I decided to come here because this place never feels empty, no matter how many people are or aren't here."
"You came here because you didn't want to be alone, so you slept on the couch...by yourself..." Kelly studied her closely. "I don't get it. Why didn't you sleep in the guest room? At least you would've been comfortable there."
"Ashley is always switching back and forth between her room and the guest room, so I didn't know which room she'd be in, and she's your best friend, so I'm sure you know this already, but the girl is a bitch if you wake her up."
Kelly laughed softly, "Yea, she can be kinda scary at times."
Kate nodded in agreement.
"Why didn't you come to my room?"
"I figured Carrie was there, and I didn't want to interrupt anything."
Kelly shook her head, "First off, we were just watching movies so you would've been more than welcome to crash with us, and second, when has the thought of you interrupting ever stopped you?"
She shrugged.
"You're not gonna tell me what's wrong, are you?" Kelly sighed. "I really wish you would. You've always been able to come to me if you had a problem."
"Nothing's wrong," Kate replied.
Kelly nodded, looking up as Jason walked into the kitchen, "Hey."
"Hey," he replied, smiling at the sight of Kate. "Hey, when did you get here?"
"Oh, uh..." Kate looked at Kelly.
"This morning," Kelly answered. "We're gonna go for a run."
"Cool," Jason nodded. "Is this just a girl thing, or am I allowed to come too?"
"Just a girl thing...sorry."
"Maybe next time," Kate offered a smile.
Jason leaned over, kissing her.
"Ok, ew...no kissing in the kitchen," Kelly protested. "That's just gross."
Jason pulled back, rolling his eyes, "You're such a dork."
"Takes one to know one," Kelly replied, her head tilting back at the feeling of a pair of hands on her shoulders.
"Hey," Carrie kissed her softly.
"Hey," Kelly grinned kissing her back.
"What happened to no kissing?" Jason pointed out.
"My kitchen, my rules," Kelly explained before looking back at Carrie. "Coffee's on, and your bagel's in the oven."
"Thanks baby," Carrie kissed her again before walking to the stove.
Kelly turned to Kate, "So what do you say? You up for a run?"
"Yea, that sounds good."
"Good," Kelly smiled, squeezing her knee. "I'm gonna go get changed."
"Um, Kell..." Carrie pulled the now blackened bagels out of the oven.
"Kate and I are gonna go for a run," Kelly hopped down from her chair. "What time are you leaving for your photo shoot?"
"I've gotta get going now, actually," Carrie replied.
"What about breakfast?"
Carrie looked at the burnt bagel, "I'll pick something up on the way."
Kelly frowned at the bagels, "I'm sorry, Care. I wasn't paying attention."
"It's fine," Carrie smiled, kissing her. "Thank you for trying. It was really sweet. I love you."
"Love you too," Kelly smiled back. "Have a good day."
"You too," Carrie kissed her cheek, pulling her into a hug before walking out of the kitchen. "Oh, Kate," she stopped at the door. "Are you gonna still be here tonight?"
"Oh, uh, I'm not sure...why?"
"Just wondering," Carrie shrugged. "I was gonna pick some food up on the way home for dinner, just wanted a head count."
"She'll be here," Kelly answered for her.
Kate gave an appreciative smile.
"Sounds good," Carrie nodded. "Bye y'all."
"Bye Care," Kelly winked.
Carrie wiggled her eyebrows playfully before walking out.

"Slowly, be gentle
Each step of the way,
I've never been loved before."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kelly's eyes closed as she stretched out in the large tub, bubbles up to her chin as a CD of music filled the bathroom. She smiled at the feeling of a pair of soft hands on her shoulders, and she sat up, scooting forward.
Carrie climbed in the bathtub, sitting behind her, placing her legs on either side of Kelly's. She kissed the back of her neck as her hands massaged her shoulders, "Long day?"
Kelly groaned softly as Carrie worked out a knot, "How'd you know?"
"There was a do not disturb sign on your bedroom door."
Kelly laughed.
"Forgive me if I was wrong in taking the liberty to think that sign didn't pertain to me."
"No, you were right," Kelly replied, her head falling as Carrie's hands soothed over her back. "Signs like that never pertain to you."
"So why such a rough day?" Carrie asked. "When you left this morning you said you were just gonna be in the studio all day. Songs were giving you trouble?"
"A little," she drew in a sharp breath when Carrie found another knot.
"Dang, Kell, remind me to do this more often so you're not so messed up."
"Gladly."
Carrie laughed softly, running her nails down Kelly's back, earning a satisfied moan from the Texan.
"I had a conference call when I was at the studio," Kelly noted.
"You should've told me this morning. I know how much you hate dealing with the label. I would've come hung out with you between my meetings."
"I didn't know about it until Narvel showed up at the studio, saying the label wanted to talk to me," Kelly explained. "Besides...this is perfect."
Carrie smiled, leaning forward and kissing her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around her stomach, pulling her back with her.
Kelly sighed as she rested her head back against Carrie's shoulder, "The album comes out in two days, and they're pissed that I still don't want to do interviews."
"Did you tell them where they could shove their interviews?" Carrie kissed along the edge of her ear.
Kelly smiled, "Pretty much."
"That's my girl."
"Which naturally pissed them off even more, but then I told them that I was gonna go along with what they wanted, and make this next album their way."
"I bet they were thrilled," Carrie kissed down her neck.
"Over the moon," Kelly nodded.
"So wait..." Carrie paused, her chin resting on Kelly's shoulder. "I'm confused."
"About?"
"This next album, since you're doing it their way...does their way mean crappy songs that they won't support because they know you're leaving and they wanna ruin your chances of making it on your own, or does that mean decent, radio friendly songs that they will support because they wanna make as much money off of you as they can?"
"I have no idea," Kelly admitted. "That's actually a very good question...I guess we'll have to wait until I start getting the songs in to find out."
"When's that gonna be?"
"In a couple weeks."
"Something to look forward to..."
Kelly laughed, sliding their hands together under the water.
"So where's everybody at?" Carrie questioned. "I came in and it was creepy quiet."
"Ash went to pick up some take-out, and Jason's on a date with Kate."
"Oh really? How's that going?"
Kelly shook her head, "She still won't tell me what's wrong, and I'm just not used to that with her."
"That must be frustrating."
"It is," she nodded, her head tilting to the side as Carrie's lips made their way back across her skin. "Right there."
"Here?" Carrie kissed her again.
"Mmhmm," Kelly's eyes closed softly. "That feels so good..."
Carrie's fingers grazed over her lower stomach.
"Care..." her voice came out breathy.
"Let me help you relax," Carrie kissed just below her jaw before going back to the sweet spot on her neck, her lips working across it slowly.
Kelly nodded, sliding one of Carrie's hands further down her body.
