Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Orlando Bloom. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
(AN: because I got an e-mail from a very awesome fan, I decided to finish this once and for all. It wasn't originally how I intended, but I do believe it ends the story on a nice note. It's EXACTLY six pages. Enjoy :D )
Chapter Thirteen: Or Not So Easy
Raven hair blew in the wind as Karen stood on the roof of her shop smoking a cigarette. It had been a few days since she had slept with Orlando, and she hadn't seen him since. It turned out that he had just gotten contracted into doing a huge movie and was forced to go to England for some shooting. Although he called her every night since he left, she hardly knew what to say to him now. Normally, she let it go to voicemail and blamed it on the shop being busy.
The plan she had concocted with Eve kept ringing in her head, and she felt guilty that she had even thought up something like that. How could she play with two peoples' emotions like that? Karen shook her head and exhaled grey smoke into the dark night sky. The moon was waning now, and she was surprised she hadn't noticed it before.
After raking a shaking hand through her curly knots, Karen threw the butt over the side and turned to head back indoors. However, there, on the opposite side of the roof, stood Mike, his breath coming in gasps. He wasn't wearing a jacket, and seemed to have been standing there for quite some time. His hair was disheveled and his face flush. White puffs of air appeared out of his mouth and Karen could only assume he had been running or exercising in some way. She wondered why he looked this way, and then why he was even on here roof to begin with.
There was a tentative silence between the two of them as Mike fought to catch his breath. It was as if they had something to say to each other, but couldn't bring themselves to open up. The dark-haired girl shifted from one foot to the other in the snow, and soon found herself getting cold, but she didn't want to move from her spot. He had her stuck there, like she was in some kind of trance.
A few moments went by again before Mike began to shuffle across the still snowy roof. Before Karen could realize it, just like every other time this happened, she was in his arms, being held firmly in place. Unsure of what to do, she stood there stiffly with her arms to her sides.
It struck her as odd how now all she could think of was that Mike was so... warm. He used to be gross and hard to handle, but now he was just warm and caring, perhaps even loving.
"Karen..." He whispered, as his chest rose and fell in a sigh. She could feel his heart pounding through her sweatshirt and his t-shirt. "I need you... I need you to hold me."
A black eyebrow rose in question before she put her arms around him. The tall boy rested his head against her shoulder and just continued to squeeze her into his form. There were no words spoken. Nothing needed to be said between them. Karen continued in her confusion to hold him as he trembled there in her embrace. She thought of asking him what was wrong, but decided to wait on him to begin explaining.
Finally, Mike loosened his grip and moved his hands to her shoulders, holding Karen in place as he looked her in the eyes, "Do you really like Orlando that much? I mean... you hardly know him, and all."
His question caught her more off guard than she thought it was going to. Sure, she saw it coming, but that didn't mean she was ready for it. Karen attempted to step back, but he was holding her there in place. Instead, she swallowed the words she was sure neither of them could handle.
But before she could answer, he continued, "C'mon, Karen. I gave you flowers during black week, and he merely had sex with you. Do you really think he could make for a good relationship?" Uncertainty flashed in her eyes and he went on, "He's always traveling, and you'd always be alone even if you were dating him. Think about this logically."
"I don't know what I want." Blue eyes moved away from green. "I know I don't want to be alone. But is that enough reason to throw myself into a relationship?" Then a pause, as realization hit, "And wait a minute, how did you know I slept with him?" She demanded, shoving his hands off her shoulders.
"Oh please," Mike responded in a sardonic manner, "Like I couldn't see it plastered all over your face? You were practically glowing that day you came to tell Eve he was... what did you almost say?" He almost laughed, "He was wonderful in bed, right? I'm sure that's what you were going to tell her, all excited-like."
"Stop." She uttered, in a dangerous tone. "You do not get to judge me, Mike. That is unfair, and you know it. Just face it!" She pushed him once, "You don't know much about me after all, and that's scaring you. You're so scared of losing me that you don't even know what to do with yourself an--"
"YES!" Mike yelled, interrupting Karen, "I AM scared of losing you. But tell me," He caught her gaze again, "How is that a bad thing?"
In an effort to avoid his questions and eyes, Karen pushed him aside and began heading for the exit off the roof of her tiny building. But Mike followed her, mimicking the beat of her stride until he caught up with her and grabbed her by the wrist. She didn't turn around to meet his gaze again.
"Just tell me. Am I that bad that you had to run off into the arms of a stranger?" He sounded defeated as he loosened his grip on her wrist slowly before letting go.
Karen turned on her heel, finally seeing Mike as the defeated young man she had grown to know over the years. He was standing there, trembling and cold, his head down and staring at his feet. She wondered why she had started noticing some changes in him these last few weeks. And then she wondered why she couldn't have noticed sooner. She too, was defeated in some way by this wonderful boy before her. He would do anything for her, and she saw that instantly.
A sigh, and then she bit her lip and reached out to take his hand in her own. She lead him down into her apartment and had him sit on the couch. Karen wrapped a blanket around him and went into the kitchen to put on the water for tea, confused thoughts still swirling in her head. She heard Mike shuffle in the next room, and turned to head back to him, not realizing he was standing right behind her with the blanket held out around him.
Mike caught her in the blanket and held her there, "You're cold too." He whispered into her ear, sending chills down her spine. "Karen. I'll give you all of me and more. You can use me, abuse me, waste me, or love me. At this point, I'll take anything you want to give me."
With her heart pounding in her chest, she slowly shook her head up and down. His big hands slid up into her hair and he tilted her head up to his to kiss her gently on the lips. It was a sweet kiss at first, which had her wondering where he learned it from. But then he tilted his head another way, and the kiss became deeper until she felt his tongue brush against her bottom lip. As she gasped in surprise, he took the chance to dip his tongue into her awaiting mouth. Karen pushed back at his tongue with her own and they began a dance that ended when Mike broke the kiss a few moments later.
Blue eyes stared hazily up into deep green ones that were also glazed over. They could feel it now, the heat that radiated between them under this blanket. Strong sax-player hands slid up Mike's chest until they were resting at his shoulders, and Karen used them to pull herself up to his mouth again. She kissed him gently on the lips, much to his surprise, and then wrapped her arms around his neck.
His kiss for her suddenly was very urgent and needy, like he was about to lose her at anytime. Mike turned them until her back was against the wall in her kitchen. While their tongues continued to dance together, he slid his hands under and up her rock t-shirt, pulling it off of her in one swift movement. Their bodies connected again and he could feel her writhe for a moment as he placed his hands on her waist.
It was strange, actually. Karen wasn't the least bit nervous with Mike, unlike when she was with Orlando. She found it strange, but only for a second, because suddenly she was being lifted up and carried into the living room. Mike sat down on the couch, keeping Karen on top and wrapping the blanket around her cold form.
"I'll keep you warm." He whispered huskily, "I'll keep you warm all night long."
Their lips connected again, hot and breathy and wet. Karen pulled off Mike's shirt and almost gasped at how different his body looked compared to what she had imagined of him. While she was distracted, he tugged at her hair a bit and nipped a little at her earlobe. Kisses moved down her neck and to her collarbone as a hand wrapped around the back of her thigh and pulled her in closer. Mike was only wearing thin sweatpants, and she could feel him getting aroused underneath.
Karen had tried not to make any noise, but Mike bit down in just the right place on the side of her neck and she moaned as her hands ran through his hair. She inched closer so that her nether regions were rubbing up against his package. His mouth moved lower as his free hand cupped her breast. The same hand moved her bra aside and his tongue began to work there. She could feel the heat in her lower belly grow, and she knew she wouldn't be able to take much more of this torture. Any attempt to hold back her moans was futile. Everything he did to her felt too good.
Then, as suddenly as it all had begun, it just stopped. Karen looked down at him, her hands still on his shoulders, holding on for dear life. Her breath was coming in gasps, and her heart was pounding so hard, she could hear it in her ears. Mike met her gaze, a look of concern clear on his features.
"Wh... what?" Karen asked in a breathy voice.
There was a pause before Mike reached up and pushed the hair in front of her face behind her ear, "Why are you doing this, all of a sudden? Why the sudden change of heart?" He looked away from her, "I doubt my words had that much of an effect on you."
She too was hesitant before answering, "Honestly, I don't really know. It just feels... right to me. Like this should be happening right now."
"But what about Or--"
"Shh..." Karen covered his mouth with her fingertips, "I think you might be right. As much as it would be amazing to have him in my life, I'm just not cut out for that kind of lifestyle. I'm the low-key music store owner, after all." She smiled at him.
Mike didn't know what to say in response. Part of him wanted to trust in her honesty, but the other half of him was still unsure. Whatever the case, he knew that he still loved her with all his heart. That was truly all he could give her. In place of saying something cheesy, he gently took her hand and kissed her wrist before resting her palm against his neck. He smiled up at her in the darkness and she returned his smile before bending down to kiss him sweetly on the lips.
It was then that he went right back to business. Mike's arms wrapped around her waist and he flipped them so Karen's back was on the couch, and he was on top. He kissed down her body starting from her collarbone and ending around her hipbone, where he bit into her flesh. As she moaned again, he inched her pajama pants off her legs. Karen was suddenly exposed underneath him, but she hardly noticed. He was quick to get the remainder of his clothes off as well, socks and all, before he went to get her bra off. When she was finally naked before him, he sat back and drank in the view.
Libido took over after only a split second of gazing, and he was kissing her on the mouth again, stroking her hair and positioning himself. With one hand, he gripped her hipbone, holding her down to the couch as he readied himself. One last look into her eyes and he was plunging into her warmth. Karen cried out, not used to the feel of someone inside her. It was red-hot and cool at the same time. She shuddered as he pulled out a little and then back in. How was this so much better than Orlando?
There wasn't much time to think of the actor. Mike hardly let her rest long. He took one nipple into his mouth and began to play with it with his tongue, making circles around it before sucking gently. Suddenly, she wasn't just moaning anymore, but gripping at his arms, his hair, his shoulders as he thrust into her again and again. His mouth moved to the top of her ribcage, and he left her a mark there before he kissed her again. Karen put her hands on either side of his face and held him there as she kissed him more, urgent to feel anything he would give her.
Their eyes connected and they shared the same thought, 'There's no one else in the whole wide planet but this person in front of me.'
Then Karen thought, 'Why hadn't I noticed before?'
And Mike wanted to shout, 'I knew she would notice eventually.'

Weeks flew by like they had to be at an important business meeting in five minutes. Karen could be found frequently on the roof of her building, smoking a cigarette from time to time. Some nights, she would go out and play her sax on the streets of the city. But she almost always came home to a boy waiting for her in her apartment. He almost always brought her flowers, which brought a smile to her face, and they were working on bringing in new furniture for her so she wouldn't have to sleep on the couch anymore.
Eve was released from the hospital and doing fine at home, but it was Karen's turn to take care of her, and she did a fabulous job at it. She told her best friend about what had happened with Mike and how things felt so different now that she was looking at it with clear eyes. The blonde smiled, all-knowing, and merely patted Karen's shoulder gently, reassuring her that what she felt was real. She was happy for her dark-haired best friend, and expressed it openly, telling her to go for it.
But there was still the matter of everyone's favorite british actor. He was the reason she was stressing and disappearing into the streets of the city at night. Even Laina, who had started working at the shop almost every day after school, noticed something was up with the store owner. Attempts to get the juicy details from her lips were useless.
Soon enough, he would come back from being abroad, and he would find out about Mike. He called every few days to keep in touch with Karen, but Orlando was so busy that they hardly spoke for more than ten minutes here and there. He was always interested in hearing about Karen's shop and how Eve was doing. The actor hardly asked about anything else, not that he had time to. When she would ask him how work was, he was hesitant to talk about the movie, unsure if she would understand what was going on in his world.
One day she got a package from Orlando. In it were all the movies he had starred in on DVD, and then a coin from his newest film. It looked like a pirate medallion, and she made a face at it. Did he think her a pirate? Well, whatever he was thinking, it earned a place on her shelf with all her other knick-knacks. The DVDs would rest on her coffee table for a night or so before she noticed them again in their sleek plastic wrapping.
Instead of watching them that night, she went up to the roof to check out the skies. It hadn't snowed since he left the city for another city across the ocean, and the days were slowly getting warmer. Most of the snow on the rooftop was melted away, except in the corners were the sun just couldn't reach. Tonight, she swung her legs over the edge of the building and sat there gazing at the almost full moon. Blue eyes closed, and Karen wondered distantly what to do about the actor.
"Surprised you're not smoking." A voice made her jump, but someone steadied her from behind to keep her from falling. "Whoa! Didn't think my appearance would make you want to kill yourself that badly."
Karen tilted her head up to find Orlando there, like the devil himself. She blinked in his general direction, unsure of how to react to his sudden arrival on her roof. The owner turned slowly so that she was straddling the roof instead of dangling off the edge. The actor sat himself in front of her, but not before kissing her gently on the cheek. He lingered for a moment before sitting.
"I thought I'd find you up here." His brilliant smile gleamed in the moonlight, but Karen was calm and hardly showed off what she was thinking, "How are you?" Orlando finished.
"I'm fine. Kinda confused as to what you're doing here though." She chuckled and pushed back some of her hair.
His hand covered her own to stop it from moving through her hair completely, "I needed to see you. Isn't that reason enough?"
But when he leaned in, she dodged his face, "Why?" Karen's eyes flashed suspicion, "You could have any girl, Orli. Why did it have to be me?"
Her questions had Orlando stiffly sitting upright again. Shock was clear across his features as he tried to find the words, "You're... special. Even I could see that. And after everything you'd been through..."
She finished his thought, "You figured you would try to fix me." He didn't get to respond, "And that's why this won't work." Pause, "Well, it's not the only reason."
Suddenly, Orlando was on the defensive, "Where is this coming from? What are you trying to tell me, Karen?" He raked a hand through his dark curls, "Am I bad person because I want to help you?"
"I don't need your help." She said plainly. "That's what you don't understand. You've been gone for weeks now, almost months, and I've been fine without you. Don't you see that?" She shook her head, still looking at him, but with some sort of sympathy on her face, "You tried to make yourself so important in my life, but you weren't there when it happened and you weren't there to pick up the pieces. I've been fixing myself all along, and I don't need you."
Eyes wide, the actor couldn't find the words to fix what he had done. He sighed, and pushed himself up from his sitting position. He walked away from her towards the other end of the roof. The moon was excellent at showing him the way out of there, but he turned back at the last second to look at her. She was facing away from him, but he could see her profile in the light, and she was looking up into the sky. He turned to see Orion up in her line of vision, and he chuckled.
Karen turned to look at him. He saluted her, "I hope he treats you well then."
The musician finally smiled at her friend. "Me too." She whispered back.
And then Orlando left, heartbroken, but sure he'd be in Karen's life forever, even if he'd be far away for most of it.
- - -[Yaaaaar!]- - -
It turned out that Orlando's new movie was a hit. Tons of people went to see it, even Karen. She was never really into movies, but had enjoyed seeing her friend on the screen. He was talented, and certainly worth the ten dollars and fifty cents for admission. She left the theatre with a smile and her hand intwined with Mike's. They had really made it official since Orlando left, and she was going to meet his parents tomorrow.
Eve was finally done healing up and was back in the full swing of things. She had gone back to work and started taking care of Karen again like it used to be. Only this time, the blonde had plenty of help from Mike in that area. Even Greg was around to give his sage advice when the time came for it. He ended up helping Laina a lot in her lessons, and even taught her some rocking moves to use with her new bass. The young girl had developed an innocent crush on the med student. It was just something that Karen could tease her with.
By the time the next Black Week rode around, Karen was so caught up living life that she hardly noticed it. But she didn't just have Mike to thank for that. Orlando was still her very dear friend, and he kept her life, and her shop, extremely busy after his movie premiered.
So, although she didn't get the amazingly talented, hottest, sexiest, most wanted teenage heart-throb as a lover, she found something better. Something that could make her life complete.
