Chapter 14
It was an amazingly beautiful day; the sky was clear and the air was crisp from autumn setting in. The sun was delightfully gentle and the breeze inoffensive. Adrienne found herself seated a small, circular table with Hae and Soo. Adrienne drew in a deep breath as she relished in the invigoratingly cool air that caressed her face. Every meal should be eaten outside in this kind of weather. She loved the cold. It was the one thing she never got in Florida and for that she was sorely disappointed. Though she figured she would be singing a different tune when it winder finally comes she will have to trudge through two feet of snow in order to get anywhere.
Soo fidgeted impatently in her seat. Something about Adrienne had changed after the party. Soo herself had seen Yoochun run out to the garden, but after that she had no clue what happened. Changmin declined to inform her, and Yoochun and Adrienne had both been pretty tight lipped about the whole ordeal. It couldn’t have been bad since Adrienne had been glowing for the past three days.
“Min, please!” Soo whined as she bobbed up and down. “What happened!? We are both dying here!”
Hae glanced up from her noodle bowl, “Speak for yourself, I’m eating, not dying. But I guess I might be a bit curious about what happened. The whole situation had catastrophic potential. Though both Changmin and Yoochun are unscathed and alive, so I imagine it wasn’t too horrible.” She finished and then slurped the noodles from her chopsticks. Who was she kidding? She was about to explode from impatience.
Adrienne rolled her eyes as she took a sip of her green tea. When Soo and Hae had both called her up within a ten minute time period and asked her out for lunch she had figured that something was up. She had stayed quiet about the whole thing after Ha-Jung had started sniffing around and making insinuations. She didn’t want to give him a reason to give her more grief, since he seemed to find plenty on his own. Apparently Yoochun and Changmin had also kept everything to themselves.
She leisurely picked up her chopsticks and at an agonizingly slow speed picked up a piece of golden fried pork. Bringing the slice listlessly to her lips, she finally took a small nibble. She shot a glance at her two friends who appeared to be ready to bust.
“Oh fine! What do you want to know?” She sighed, setting her chopsticks back onto the delicately painted ceramic rest. A small squeal of excitement escaped Soo’s lips, “Oh, everything, every detail!” she exclaimed as she frantically began shaking Adrienne’s hand up and down. Adrienne smirked as she saw Hae lean in expectantly. That girl wasn’t fooling anyone, she so wanted to know.
Adrienne removed her hand from Soo's and rested her chin on her palm, “Um well, Changmin took me out to the garden to get me away from the tension,” she took a small bite of rice, “We just talked for a few minutes and then he offered me a dance, so I figured, “Hey, it’s a party, why not.” So we danced, and he threw me into this elegant dip–he’s a great dancer by the way- and that’s when Yoochun saw us.”
Hae let out a low whistled, “Oh man, I bet he wasn’t happy…” Adrienne nodded as she took another sip of tea, “Yeah that is probably an understatement. Anyway, so he stormed over being all alpha-male like. He actually shoved Changmin if you can believe it. I separated the two and Changmin left. Then Yoochun and I exchanged a few…not so nice words, and then he...uh grabbed me and um…kissed…me.” She finally trailed off in a whisper before jamming a large piece of pork in her mouth.
The distinct sound of chopsticks clattering against ceramic rang through Adrienne's ears. She slowly chewed her food as Hae and Soo continued to gap at her in what seemed to be stunning disbelief.
"He what?!" in unison, of course.
"Oh don't make me repeated it!" She shot back as she slightly flailed her hands in the air, most likely in embarrassment. Soo snapped her mouth shut, slightly rubbed her fingers over her lips in thought and then spoke again, "I'm sorry if we seem so shocked, well we are, but that just sounds so...un-Yoochun..." Hae nodded in agreement as she tried to find a new pair of chopsticks. Adrienne paused, "Everyone, i.e. you two and Changmin, has been saying that he's been acting unlike his usual self lately. What is his usual self like then?" Adrienne asked, slightly perturbed.
After accosting the poor innocent waiter, Hae had retrieved her sticks, and after victoriously digging into her food, she replied, "Well, for one, he isn't compulsory. He is always very calculated and well...boring, if you must know. Sure he is gorgeous and sickeningly affectionate...at least with his girlfriend d'jour, but no girl has ever dated him for more than a few months before getting completely fed up with his obsessive compulsively structured life. I was warned many times from different girls not to date him. You know...unless you like the deliberated kind of life. It’s a shame too, since he is the kind of guy that falls hard every time."
"But you came along," she interjected, and then quickly waved her hands when she saw Adrienne’s visage had developed a rather unpleasant glare. "No no no, that's a good thing! Dear lord the boy needed to be shaken up! Yunho had tried taking him to a few clubs to try to get him to loosen up a little but he wouldn't have it. He would find a nice dark corner, have a drink and just people watch. Yunho eventually got so frustrated that he gave up."
Adrienne swirled her soup slowly as she took it all in. He never seemed to be like that with her? She silently prayed that he wasn't suffering from some sort of dual personality disorder brought on by years of self-suppression; Hae jumped in,
"So was it good?" she inquired, grinning mischievously.
"What?" Adrienne started, obviously thrown by the question.
"Oh come on! Tell us! We'll do whatever you want!"
Adrienne smirked, "You know...I have been eyeing this really cute pair of shoes..."
Yoochun was sprawled ungracefully on Changmin's modern crimson couch. He knew he shouldn't, it was rude, but he was too enveloped in his own assiduous thoughts to be concerned with civilities. He felt so...odd. He had been so out of character lately, definitely far from his comfort zone, which he loved dearly. Was it so wrong to like structure? His memory ran through the events of the party, and running particularly slowly over the scenes in the garden. What had gotten in to him!? He didn't know what had compelled him; fear...pride maybe. Something. He sighed, closing his eyes and rubbing the bridge of his nose. He couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen. He and Adrienne had had a great rest of the evening, but they hadn't spoken since. He didn't know what to think.
"Headache?"
He opened his eyes to cast a half-lidded glance at Changmin, who was holding a tray with an array of different dishes. When Changmin had called him asking him to come over for lunch, he figured that something was up. What he didn't know is that Changmin had invited Yunho, Jae-joong and Junsu also. He figured that the three had decided that they had waited long enough to find out what was going on. He also figured that Changmin knew this, and invited Yoochun so that Changmin, himself, didn't have to bear the brunt of the assault.
Traitor...
"Slightly, probably just hunger," Yoochun finally replied as he righted himself on the couch. He lowered himself the floor cushion, rubbed his hands together slightly and picked up his sticks. The lunch looked delicious...too much so.
"This isn't poisoned is it? You guys aren't that upset with me are you?"
Jae-joong stopped abruptly and began scrutinizing his shrimp. Junsu also began to fish through his bowl of kimchee to make sure there wasn't anything that wasn't supposed to be there.
"No...my mom made this huge dinner last night and these are just the leftovers. I swear...it's safe." Yoochun glared slightly, "Kinda seems like a bribe to me..."
Changmin fidgeted, "Ok! I thought it might ease you into a more amiable state...then you would do all the talking...technically it's none of my business! I just happened to be a witness!" He gushed as he quickly lowered his face to his rice bowl and began shoveling feverishly.
Yoochun groaned, "Why do you guys want to know so badly?! Aren't the girls the ones who are supposed to be all gossip-hungry?!" The boys exchanged looks and then shook their heads.
"Look," Jae-joong started, "We've all noticed a change in you, and then with what when down at the party; Changmin only knows, and we haven't been able to beat it out of him yet..."
"Hey!" He retorted, "I only saw a few minutes of it..." he rubbed his arm gingerly, "You know that I bruise easily...so mean..."
Yunho rolled his eyes, "Suck it up! If you would have told us, I wouldn't have had to use force...and a few minutes of what exactly, is what we want to know."
"Sorry about...well you know..." Yoochun expressed to Changmin. Changmin just nodded, "It's fine...emotions...the make you do crazy things." There were a few moments of silence. The boys began eating peacefully...and then.
"WHAT ARE YOU APPOLGIZING FOR?! PLEEEAAASSSEEEEEEEEE"
"Waaa! Hey, let go! Ouch! Hey! Stop that! Don't rip this sweater, it's new!!"
Junsu, finally becoming overcome with anxiety, nearly turned over the table as he lunged for Yoochun. By grabbing Yoochun but his pale blue sweater, he successfully tackled him to the ground. He supposed that the other guys took this as their cue to join in. In the end, Junsu was lying across his chest, Yunho had his arms pinned at his sides, Jae-joong was sitting on his legs, and Changmin just stared in awe.
"Thanks for the help, Changmin..." he grunted from underneath the pile.
"Consider us even."
"So are you going to tells or do we have to resort to drastic measures?"
"This isn't drastic?" He squeaked nervously.
Junsu began poking Yoochun in the side.
"Haha..hey! stop that!," he managed through fits of giggles, "Fine! FINE! No tickling! Just get off me for the love of..."
The boys removed themselves and returned to their prospective cushions. Yoochun tugged at his sweater to straighten it and then ran his fingers through his mussed hair.
"Ok, so you all saw me storm out there, and that's when I saw Min and Changminnie over here dancing; he had in her in the elegant dip- he's a good dancer it seems...how did you get that good?- anyway, so I rush over and shoved Changmin, thus the apology, and the Min stepped between us. Changmin left. Um..then... Min and I argued; she was going to leave! It was the only thing I could do!"
The others looked a bit startled, possibly thinking of worse scenarios than what actually happened.
"What did you do exactly? She isn't hurt is she?!" Jae-joong asked, sounding alarmed.
"No...No! Of course not! Sheesh... well I...umm" he blushed and put his hands in his face. "Ikshumphurmesn"
"What?! Get your face out of your hands!"
"I KISSED HER OK?! Are you happy now?!" He yelled before shoving his beet red face into a pillow.
Unison clattering rang through the living room.
"You....Yoochun...did what?"
"Don't make me repeat myself..."
Yunho cleared his throat, "Well, when I told you to go after her I had no idea...ow!" He winced as he rubbed his shoulder where Yoochun just punched him.
“No wonder you two looked so giddy when you came back in....” Junsu said as he pieced everything together in his mind, “So…does this mean you guys are an item?”
Yoochun shrugged his already drooping shoulders, “Hell if I know, she hasn’t talked to me in three days.” He grumbed has he picked at his lunch.
“Have you called her?” Jae-joong asked, giving him a slightly disapproving stare.
“Aahhh….in short, no”
The rest of the group expended a loud groan.
“Why not?!,” Yunho returned a punch to Yoochun’s shoulder. Yoochun shrugged again.
The all looked at him expectantly.
“Sorry, I have no reason for you,” he finally finished.
“Oh well you know if you really aren’t that interested, I wouldn’t mind asking her out,” Changmin threw out there casually. Yoochun shot him a dirty look, “Do you value your life, or do you just like to piss me off?”
“Yes and yes.”
Yoochun growled and threw himself dramatically to the floor. He was so confused! He had never been put in a position like this before. He’d never been so afraid to call a girl in his life. He wasn’t sure why really, possibly because he was afraid of royally screwing things up beyond repair like he almost did at the party.
Yunho suddenly clapped his hands together and grinned, “I have a great plan…”
