Title:
Ms Self Destruct
Author: TrentReznorsSin
Disclaimer: Trent unfortunately doesn’t belong to me *sobs* (do you really think I’d be sat at my PC if I owned him?? Lol) but Erin and some other people you won’t recognise belong to moi. I’m a poor uni student so don’t sue, I’m not making anything out of this!
Summary: Set during the Self Destruct Tour 94/95. Trent’s decision to ask his best friend Erin to come along for the tour has made them both ask the question ‘are we just friends?’
Feedback: Yes please, no flames though, they make me cry
Author's note: This is the first NIN fiction I’ve written in years, so I might be a bit rusty.

Chapter Twelve: Right Now I’m So In Love With You
Erin woke up the next morning, her body delightfully sore after repeatedly ‘making up for lost time’. Leaning her cheek on her hand, she looked over at the sleeping figure next to her. Stretched out on his back, dark hair in a messy halo on the pillow, Trent had one arm tucked under his head while the other rested on his chest, rising and falling with his breathing.
Moving closer, she looked down at her best friend turned lover’s sleeping face. A warm feeling spread through her body as she brushed a dark lock from his face. Too often had he said that he didn’t like his appearance; that his nose was too big and his lips too thin, but he was perfect in her eyes. Smoothing one finger along a dark eyebrow, she moved her fingers down to trace his jaw and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. Pulling away, she saw him shift slightly before raising the hand that was on his chest to cover his eyes for a moment.
Smiling to herself, she slid out of bed and wrapped one of the complimentary robes around herself. Walking over to the window, she opened the curtains just enough for the light to fall right on Trent’s face. Taking the hand off his eyes, he opened and promptly closed them again.
“Gah! Jesus…” With that he pulled the sheet over his head to block out the light. After a moment, he lowered it and looked over at her. “What was that for?”
“You’ve forgotten haven’t you?” She walked back to the bed and sat down next to his stretched out figure. “We have a sound check to go to. Its nearly eleven…the rest of the band have probably pronounced you missing by now.” Rubbing an eye with the palm of his hand, Trent sat up against the headboard.
“I doubt it.” He replied, leaning over and lowering the robe over her shoulder so he could press a kiss in the crook of her neck. “But you’re right, we have a sound check to go to.” Replacing the robe, he got up out of bed and started pulling on his top and boxers. Once finished, he placed a quick kiss on her lips before walking to the door.
“So you wrote Closer about me?” He stopped and looked over his shoulder with a smile.
“Closer, Purest Feeling, Sanctified, Eraser…they were all about you Erin. They’re my twisted love songs.” Opening the door, he walked a few more steps before turning around again. “I’ll see you there, I’ve got a few things I need to sort out.”
“Okay.” Sighing as the door closed behind him, Erin got up and started walking around the room, digging through her clothes. Even after just one night together, the room now seemed cold and empty.
She had a feeling the sound check and the subsequent show later that evening was going to be quite different after events from the night before.
* * *
The rest of the band were waiting for her as she walked in.
“Hey guys, sorry I’m late.”
“No problem…”
“What song shall we start on?” Danny asked as she brushed by them to get to her guitar. While the others decided on a song, Chris walked over to Erin and crouched down next to her.
“Well?” She looked up at him, a frown creasing her forehead.
“Well what?”
“Has it finally happened? Have you guys finally got all this ‘we-can’t-cuz-we’re-friends’ crap out of the way and just done it?"
“How the hell do you know that?!” She hissed back at him, careful not to let the others hear. Chris smiled.
“I’ve known you for ages and Trent even longer. It's been obvious for years you guys have wanted each other and the subtle changes in the way you guys act around each other gave it away for me. That and Trent wasn’t in his room when I knocked this morning…”
“…Fair enough. Do the others know?”
“No but they won’t be surprised when they find out. Believe me, they’ll be happy.”
“Are you two done chatting?” Trent asked, leaning on the microphone.
“Yes we are.” Erin said, picking up her instrument and walking over to her usual spot.
* * *
“He knows.” She said, her voice echoing around the now empty venue. The rest of the band and crew had gone, leaving the two alone.
“Who?” Trent shifted his eyes from the ceiling to her.
“Chris. He said he figured it out, said we’re acting slightly differently around each other.”
“Does it bother you? That he knows?” Came the reply. Erin thought about this for a moment as she felt a hand come up and brush her hair away from her neck.
“It doesn’t bother me that he knows, it wouldn’t bother me if the rest of the band knew. It’s the thought of when everyone else finds out that gets me.” Leaning back in the chair, she sighed. “Does it bother you?” Trent thought for a moment before shaking his head.
“I’ve made some of the most important decisions in my life by not giving a damn what anyone else’s opinion is. The same goes with us being together.” Putting an arm around her, Trent kissed his lover’s temple before resting his head against hers. “I don’t give a fuck what people think, and neither should you. It never bothered you back in ’84.”
“I guess you’re right.” He was right. It never bothered her what people thought when she became friends with him and consequently lost other friends. The two looked over at the large stage, knowing that in a matter of hours they would be on it.
Things would never be the same again.
