Jade’s failed attempts at reaching Gerard at home spurred her on in her mission. The more thought on all Gerard had given up for her, the more she hated herself for losing sight of her future. Letting her father rule her life has been easy, because she had never been in love. Now, she was burning up inside because she had hurt the man she longed for.
Jake was on the phone now, sorting out an appointment with a solicitor, to see how they could go about their divorce. Jade wanted it over with as soon as she could.
Holding her mobile, she called Gerard again. For the third time, she reached his answer phone. Throwing her phone away in disgust, she grabbed her coat and made for the door.
“Jake” she whispered, motioning for his attention. “I am popping to Gerry’s. I can’t get him over the phone. I’ll be two minutes.” Jake nodded in recognition and turned back to the dull hold music he was being polluted with.
Happily, Jade skipped the few blocks to Gerard’s. She was feeling freedom, feeling her own spirit seeping back up. All of this was because of one Scotsman, and she couldn’t wait to tell him. Knocking on his door, she stood on her toes peering through the windows in his door. After a few minutes she knocked again, and crept round to the side window to see if he had his headphones in. The room was dead. Nothing out of place, it was spotless. At that Jade knew he hadn’t been there for a few days.
Suspicion crept over her. Where would he have gone? Did he not want to see her?
Jade sat on the nearest bench, pulling her knees toward her. Poor Gerard. Did he think she didn’t love him? Where would he go?
Suddenly it hit her, anytime something drastic had happened, Gerard had always ended up in one place. Home.
Jade’s feet barely touched the floor as she flew back to the flat and dialled Michelle’s number. Gerard had spoken of home often, but Jade didn’t know the address. If anyone could help her now, it would be Michelle.
Gerard had barely set foot in the place and it felt like he had never left. His mum had kept his bedroom the same as the day he had left. Pictures of him as a teenager stuck to the walls. His favourite posters still in place, his football models on his shelves. Dumping his bag down, he lay on his childhood bed and cuddled the pillow close to him. The house was empty when he had arrived, mainly because he hadn’t warned his mother of his early arrival. Lying on his bed, he wondered what Jade was up to. Had he made the right choice just leaving like this? Cuddling his old teddy bear, he drifted slowly into sleep.
Margaret knew her son was home the minute she entered the house. The bag thrown on her table, and his coat left across the chair was a big giveaway. Her son was never one for tidiness. But there was an uneasy air, he was home and he wasn’t happy.
Finding him curled up in his old bed, caused her heart to beat. She barely saw enough of her son as it was, but when he was hurt, so was she. Grabbing an old blanket, she covered him and kissed his cheek. Returning to the kitchen, she put the kettle on and waited for her son to surface.
Gerard starred and looked about him, unsure of his surroundings. But sniffing the air, he was reassured in his mind that he was home. Rising he looked out of the window. He had slept all day, and stared across the sea to the horizon, watching the sun slowly set. Inside he ached for Jade, and walked to his bag, pulling out his mobile and switching it on.
As he waited to see if he had any message he walked toward the kitchen, he could hear soft music floating from under the door, and his mother’s voice humming along with it. Bursting through the door, he smiled and took the woman in his arms.
“Hello Ma,” Pulling her off his feet, he kissed her cheek.
“Get off me you fool,” Margaret laughed, “You should have let me know you were coming.”
“It was all a bit rushed, I’m sorry.”
Gerard’s mobile went off in his hand; Margaret followed her son’s eyes to the screen and saw the name Jade.
Gerard had mentioned Jade more than once in his daily conversations with his mother. But she had never met the girl, nor spoke to her.
”Where’s Jade then?” she asked deliberately.
As she suspected Gerard’s face set a grim line. Seating himself, he began to tell her mother everything that he had learnt about Jade and that he had been living through. Margaret leaped from her seat and held her son, her heart hammering against her chest. Her poor son was heartbroken and there was nothing she could do.
“I will fix it Ma,” Gerard stood, “I just need to think. I need to go for a walk or something. Leave the key outside for me?”
“As ever,” Margaret laughed, thinking of all the times as a teenagers he had left the key outside under the flower pot, so he wouldn’t wake her as he fell in drunk. Kissing his cheek, she made him put on a coat and watched him walk down towards the beach.
With a cup of tea in hand, Margaret settled herself for a good read, knowing she wouldn’t settle until Gerard returned home. The rain was throwing itself against the window. Margaret was pleased she had made Gerard take a coat along with him. Focusing on her book, she jumped at a sharp knock against the window.
Opening her door cautiously, she found a small woman stood in the doorway, soaked to the bone. Margaret looked around cautiously but her hospitality won her over as she pulled the girl into the warm house, pulling her bag and coat off her.
“What on earth are you doing out in a storm like that? Here let me take your coat”
Margaret took the girl in, a real beauty, Short black hair and green eyes. She seemed almost familiar. It was only when she opened her mouth and a broad American accent came from her lips did Margaret realise she was staring Jade in the face.
Once dried, Jade felt she owed the old lady an apology.
“I’m sorry to invade you like this. I was looking for the Butler residence around here, but must have got lost, and then the rain started. I felt drowned, probably looked it too”.
Margaret looked at her closely, “Why are you looking for Margaret’s house?”
“You know her?” Jades eyes lit up. “Well as eager as I am to meet her, I’m looking for her son!”
“Ahh the actor. Lovely man him, you a fan or something? They don’t take kindly to people hounding their house you know”
“I most certainly am not”. Jade looked outraged. “If you must know, I’m a friend of Gerard’s, I have a… a message for him.”
Margaret smiled, she was in every way like he described. Even now the girl had jumped to her feet, leaving the offered cup of tea. She was staring out the window waiting for the rain to die down.
Margaret sipped her tea, “I don’t think he’s much of an actor myself. Plus he seemed rather stuck up. Not my cup of tea.”
Jade flashed the lady in front of her a look of disgust, “Well it’s clear you don’t have the right teabags. I think you’re very rude,. Gerard is one of the kindest men I have ever met, and while I’m here, I will ask you to keep such remarks to yourself.” Jade turned away, seething inside. “Plus he is a fine actor”
“So am I,” laughed Margaret, “I am sorry, Sweetheart, I couldn’t resist. Sit yourself down. I am Margaret, Gerard’s mother. Nice to meet you”
If Margaret could have framed the look of shock on the girls face she would have placed it upon her mantelpiece.
An hour or so later, Jade had unpacked and was sat chatting away to Margaret like she had known her for months. Now Margaret had dropped her defensive shield, Jade found her fine company., It was clear to see where Gerard got his sense of humour from. It was also evident why Gerard returned here when in doubt. This place was a slice of heaven.
By midnight, Jade could barely keep her eyes open; the long flight added to her mixed emotions had wiped her out. Margaret led her to Gerard’s bedroom and insisted she get some sleep.
“Gerard will wake you when he returns. You know he will.”
Jade looked around Gerard’s bedroom and smiled, snuggling into his bed. She picked up his scent on the pillow and hugged it close falling into a deep sleep.
Gerard returned home around 1am, soaked to his skin. His mum greeted him with a mop, and chased him around, hitting him for soaking her floor.
Laughing he hugged her close. “You always know how to make me smile mum. But why aren’t you in bed? Long gone are the days you need to worry about me.”
”I never stop worrying about you little one.”
Gerard smiled down at his mother. “I think I have sorted my head out now ma.”
“Good. Now get to bed, it will all seem better by the morning. I promise you that.”
Gerard entered his pitch-black bedroom. Pulling off his top and pants, he walked over to the window and flicked on the bedside table. Turning round, he looked at his bed, and saw the sleeping form of Jade. Her legs wrapped around his blankets, she was wearing one of his old t-shirts. Gerard knelt down beside the bed and stared at her, scared to make a noise in case she woke. He was more than happy to watch her sleep. Reaching out his arm, he stroked her face, smiling at how soft her skin was. Looking down at her hand, he noticed her wedding ring wasn’t there, and his heart lifted. Flicking off the bedside light, he climbed into the bed with her. Jade stirred and wrapped her body around his. This was more than essential since they were both in a single bed. Gerard spooned her carefully and kissed her neck. Pulling her toward him, they lay both awake. Neither wanting to speak neither needed to speak.
Gerard awoke to his face being stroked, looking down his eyes locked with Jades. Lifting his hand, he entwined his fingers with hers, and kissed her softly. Tears ran down Jades face and he held her tight. The silence of Scotland was speaking for them. More was worked out in that silent minute then ever could have been screamed out. They needed each other and both finally realised it.
