Chapter 13
When the four of them returned, Ann’s brother and his wife had just arrived. “Teague, Jillian, this is Gerry,” Ann said. “Gerry this is my brother and sister-in-law.”
“Nice to meet you both,” Gerry said shaking their hands.
“Oh yeah,” Ann added, “this is Brendan, Lynn’s boyfriend. Brendan, Teague and Jillian. I hope you two brought nice clothes cause we are going to the Chimney tonight for dinner.”
“Great,” Teague said, “Aren’t grandma and grandpa coming with us?”
“Yeah. They should be here around four even though I told them to get here at five.” Teague and Ann laughed at this, leaving the rest of them to wonder why.
After everyone had taken their showers, Lynn and Ann and Jillian took over the bathroom in order to “primp.” This left Brendan watching TV and Gerry talking to Teague.
“So Gerry,” Teague began, “what do you do for a living?”
“I am an actor.”
“Have I seen you in anything?”
“I was in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and I played Nikki Sixx in ‘The Dirt,’ that movie about Mötley Crüe.”
“I don’t think I saw either of those. How old are you?”
“Why?”
“You just look older.”
“36.”
“You know my sister is 22? You are old enough to be her father.”
“I did know that and why are you asking me so many question?”
“First, my father isn’t going to and second I made the mistake of not asking questions when she was dating Adam.”
“I heard about him. He is kinda the reason we met.”
“How?”
“I was at the pub when Ann performed her song for the first time. From what I hear, she got her record deal that night.”
“Cute. But let me just warn you, if you hurt her in anyway, I will find you and it will not be pretty.”
“Whoa, no worries.”
“I just had to get that out of the way.” Teague heard Brendan chuckling. “Same goes for you. I think of Lynn as a sister. I am watching both of you,” he said as he made the “I am watching you” hand gesture. (You know, the one from “Meet the Parents.”)
Just then, the girls walked into the living room. And Teague and Gerry stood up, Ann said, “I hope my big bro wan being nice to you Ger.” Gerry, who was behind Teague, shook his head no. “Teague,” she said as she smacked her brother, “what did you say to him?”
“Nothing.” He turned and the hand gesture again.
“Just then Mike and Charline arrived home. On their way home, they stopped at Ann’s grandparents house to pick them up. “Gerry, Brendan, this is my grandma Genie and my grandpa Gene. Grandma, grandpa, this is Gerry, my boyfriend, and this is Brendan, Lynn’s boyfriend.”
Everyone shook hands and said hello. “Gerry,” Genie said, “I noticed that you have an accent. Where are you from?”
“Scotland,” he replied. “I was born in Glasgow, but I grew up in a small town about an hour west called Paisley.”
“I went there some years ago. It is a beautiful country.”
“I try to go back as much as my job lets me.”
“What job is that?”
“I am an actor.”
“Really? My favorite actor is Scottish, Sean Connery.” Everyone laughed when Gerry did his horrible Connery impression. “He was the best Bond; sexy then and sexy even now.”
“Grandma!” Ann exclaimed.
“You are one to talk,” Charline said with a laugh. “You know you think he’s cute.”
“Ann,” Gerry said, trying to look hurt, “I though I was the only Scottish man you fancied?”
“Shut up,” Ann said smacking him on the arm.
Dinner was fairly uneventful until Ann’s grandma started talking about her conspiracies theory. Both Brendan and Gerry were amazed that anyone, let alone an American who was involved with the war effort, could believe that the Holocaust didn’t happen the way everyone was taught.
“You see Gerry and Brendan,” Genie began, “based on Jewish documentation, only a little less than 800,000 Jews dies in the so called concentration camps.”
“Only 800,000? That still seems like a lot,” Lynn said. “You say it like their deaths didn’t matter.”
“Well, in the grand scheme of things, they don’t. Many more Americans dies in the war.”
“Yeah, but they weren’t gasses, burned, and starved.”
“Neither were the Jews.”
The look on Lynn’s face was one of horror and disbelief. “How do you figure that?”
“When the Red Cross went into Dachau, they saw that the Jews were given money to buy thing, allowed to go to school. True they didn’t have the amount of food they should have, but the Germans didn’t have much to give.”
“That’s because the Nazi’s set it up that way so that everyone would think that the Jews were being treated well.”
“Change the subject,” Ann mouthed to her mother.
After Charline changed the subject, to mood at the table changed. The food was good, but expensive. At the Glass Chimney they didn’t even put the prices on the menu. Gerry looked around and noticed that everyone was ordering coffee and dessert. “Please excuse me,” he said as he stood up.
“Where you going?” Ann asked.
“Restroom,” he replied kissing her on the cheek. As he walked towards the bathroom, he stopped the waitress. “I’d like to take care of the bill please.”
“Okay,” she said with a confused smile. “Wait here, I will be right back.”
As he waited Gerry thought, ‘I don’t even want to know how much this is going to be.’
“Here you are sir,” the waitress said as she handed Gerry the check.
Gerry looked at it and was amazed. He reluctantly gave her his credit card. When she returned, Gerry gave her $150 as a cash tip and said, “You did a great job, have a nice night,” before returning to the table.
A little while later, Charline asked the waitress for the bill. She leaned in and whispered, “He has already taken care of it,” motioning towards Gerry.
“Gerry, you didn’t have to do that,” Charline said.
“It was my pleasure,” he said with a smile.
When everyone was walking towards the cars, Mike took Gerry aside. “I just want to say thank you for dinner.”
“Really it was no problem,” Gerry replied.
When they were driving home, Ann leaned over to Gerry. “Do I even want to know how much dinner was?”
“No and even if you did, I would tell you. It would be ungentlemanly of me.”
“It was that bad? Lynn, do you see why I love this man?”
“Actually, I do. Every time you two kiss, it makes me want to throw up,” Lynn said fighting back a smile.
