A few minutes later, we were walking up to the door of a place called “Sugar,” located in the heart of downtown. Our hotel was only a few blocks away, and I could see its big red letters when we exited the limo. As we approached the door, a large man greeted us and let us pass through the velvet rope he was holding in his huge hands. Gerard excused himself and went to the restroom while the rest of us took a seat at the neon illuminated bar. I made it a point to sit next to Mikey so I might be able to speak to him without anyone hearing me. We all ordered drinks and I took out my cigarettes and lit one. I looked at Mikey’s profile as he fumbled with the cocktail napkin on the bar in front of him. His features were very similar to his brother’s, only more chiseled and refined. He happened to glance over at me and I took that chance to speak.
“Mikey? What’s wrong?” He quickly averted his gaze from my prying eyes. “You know why Frank’s acting weird, don’t you?” He looked very uncomfortable. Finally though, he spoke to me.
“Yeah I do.” He looked over at me and raised his left eyebrow.
“What is it? Why has he suddenly started giving me looks of hatred? He was really sweet to me before.” The bartender sat our drinks down and Mikey took a long swig from his. He was stalling on purpose. I wasn’t going to let him do it long.
“Does he really not want me around? Is that it?” Mikey shook his head and frowned.
“Then what? I feel like he resents me.”
“He does. But not for the reasons you think.” I was very confused at this point. What else could he resent me for?
“Please just tell me.” Mikey sighed and glanced around the room.
“Because he likes you.” I wrinkled my nose in massive confusion.
“He resents me because he likes me?” It didn’t make any sense to me.
“Come on Jordyn. It’s obvious to all of us that you and Gerard have a thing going. Frank is just jealous.” The reality of what Mikey said jumped up and slapped me in the face.
“But…I thought he had a wife. His ring…Bob said…”
“Bob doesn’t know what he’s talking about. She filed for divorce last week. No one knows that but me. He told me the day it happened.” Everything made perfect sense. But then again it didn’t. I couldn’t fathom someone getting served with divorce papers one week and the next wanting to be with someone new. Not unless they had had problems with their spouse for a long period of time and wasn’t in love with them anymore. Mikey seemed to be reading my mind.
“They’d been having problems for a while and she got tired of him being gone all the time. He went home a couple weeks ago and caught her with someone else.” I suddenly felt really horrible for Frank. That must have been awful. I knew firsthand what it felt like. I’d gone through it two days earlier. I suddenly felt compelled to talk to Frank, to hug him and say how sorry I was and how much I knew how he felt. It probably wouldn’t do much good, but I wanted to nonetheless. I felt a warm hand brush across my back. Gerard took the seat on my left and kissed my cheek gently.
“Diet Coke please,” he said, holding up his hand as the bartender nodded, acknowledging his request. “What did I miss?” I shook my head as I took a much needed sip from my SoCo and lime.
“Nothing. We just got our drinks.” I couldn’t think of anything better to say. “You aren’t drinking?” Out of the corner of my eye I watched Mikey down the rest of his drink in one swallow and then order another. I didn’t understand why he was so upset if Frank was the one who liked me. Maybe he just had trouble keeping such big secrets from everyone.
“I don’t anymore,” Gerard said, taking his soda from the bartender and sipping it through the straw.
“Oh. Well that’s a good thing, right?” Gerard raised an eyebrow and halfway smiled sympathetically.
“Not all the time. Sometimes I miss it. But it’s the best thing I ever did.” He took out a pack of cigarettes and lit up. “Now only if I could quit this.” I snickered and nodded in agreement.
“Me too. I want to quit but I know I’m not ready. Especially not right now in my life.” I briefly thought about Adam, but forced the intruding images away. A few minutes later, the DJ decided to get sappy on everyone and play a slow love song.
“Would you dance with me?” Gerard asked, looking at me with an intense stare. I smiled when I saw his eyes, so soft and longing. I nodded silently and stood up, taking his outstretched hand. We walked to the dance floor and he pulled me close into him. He took my right hand in his left and slinked his other one around my waist. I rested my chin on the top of my left hand, which was on top of his right shoulder. I closed my eyes when he leaned his right cheek on my head and quietly hummed along to the music. I felt so safe with him. He smelled so sexy, and the feel of his velvet jacket was somehow erotic to me. I felt his head move away from mine and I looked up into his eyes. He smiled down at me and looked between my stare and lips. I smiled, a feeling of pure happiness welling up in my belly. He leaned into me and I watched his eyes close before his lips brushed gently against mine. My eyes instinctively fluttered shut as we shared a romantic, enthralling kiss. As we parted, Gerard’s lips spread into a satisfied smile.
“You’re so beautiful.” He looked longingly into my eyes, and all I could do was smile. I didn’t want to be anywhere else in the world at that moment but there in his warm embrace. He leaned his head against mine again and closed his eyes, holding me tighter against him. When the music changed to an upbeat techno dance song, a flutter of sadness crossed my heart. Gerard stepped back from me and took my hand as we walked back to the bar and sat down. I had two more drinks as we all shared light conversation. The guys joked and laughed with each other and I was introduced to each of their personalities more as I sat and listened to them. Gerard was extremely funny; very animated and bright as he talked. Mikey was more reserved, and only seemed to speak when spoken to. But I guessed it was because of the Frank situation because I’d seen him be a lot louder since I’d been there with the guys. Bob was a little quiet too, but was very funny and seemed to like to laugh a lot. Ray was sort of talkative and would get really excited when he talked sometimes. I had so much fun listening and laughing with them, I didn’t realize how the time had slipped away. I looked at my cell phone. Gerard noticed this and turned his attention to me.
“Are you ready to go?” I looked up at him and smiled.
“No, I was just checking the time. If you guys are ready though, going back is fine with me.” They all looked at each other and shrugged, silently deciding to leave.
“We have to check in anyway when we get back,” Ray said, pulling out some cash and waving down the bartender. He paid for all our drinks and we left to go back to the limo.
“Thank you Ray,” I said, smiling at him as I walked down the sidewalk next to him. Gerard was on my other side, holding fast to my left hand.
“You’re welcome Jordyn.” Ray smiled sweetly.
“Oh thank you Ray-Ray.” Bob came up on Ray’s right side and mocked him as he made smooching noises and pretended to kiss him. He pushed Bob off of him and we all laughed at their antics.
“Get off me you pervert!” Bob doubled over with laughter and slapped his knees. We came to the limo and Ray opened the door for us all. Gerard and I snuggled up close on the seat and I rested my head on his left shoulder. Bob lay his head over on Mikey’s shoulder, mocking me. I didn’t care. I knew he was just messing around, trying to make us laugh. Mikey frowned at Bob and pushed his shoulder up sharply, thumping Bob’s head hard. Bob lifted his head back up and gave Mikey a mean scowl. A slight hint of a smile crept across Mikey’s lips and I was glad to see it after his gloomy demeanor all night. We arrived at the hotel and the limo drove into the parking deck and let us out right next to the bus. Ray went straight inside, apparently to see how Frank was doing. Bob and Mikey tried to beat each other inside and tripped over each others’ legs trying to get up the steps. They fell on their asses on either side of them and erupted into hearty laughter. Gerard and I went up the steps between them, shaking our heads and laughing at their silliness. Ray was standing in front of the bunks, quietly talking to Frank, who was still lying down.
“You want to get your things and meet me in the lobby?” Gerard asked as we stopped in the middle of the living room.
“Sure. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” He nodded and winked at me as he went to register our rooms. I headed back to the bedroom to gather my things. As I walked past Ray, I glanced over to lock eyes with Frank’s. They were red and bloodshot, like he’d been crying. His lashes were thick with wetness. My heart lurched in my chest as his gaze held a look of mortal pain. I knew that look well. I’d been shrouded in it for two days. I continued into the bedroom and put my things back into my duffle. When I came back out, Ray was gone. I walked past the bunks again and a hand reached out and touched my right shoulder. I looked up to see Frank.
“Hey,” he said his voice hoarse and grainy.
“Hey Frank. Are you okay?” I had a sincere look of concern on my face.
“No.” A sympathetic frown overtook my lips. I put my bag down and reached up to hold his hand.
“What’s wrong?” I hoped he would talk to me. He sniffed and wiped an eye with his palm.
“My wife is divorcing me.” Even though I already knew this I felt the shock all over again seeing Frank’s eyes and hearing him actually say it.
“Oh, honey. I’m so sorry.” I frowned and turned the corners of my mouth down empathetically.
“Thanks,” he mumbled, sounding like his nose was stopped up from his earlier crying. I cupped his cheek and smiled at him sweetly. A fresh tear began to fall, but I swept it away with my thumb. He sniffled and sighed, trying to hold his crying in.
“I know what you’re feeling. And I understand why you don’t want me here. You feel like you’re living through it twice as much seeing Adam and me fighting. Am I right?” He closed his eyes and nodded, sniffing again.
“But I don’t really want you to leave. I’m sorry if I came across that way.” I smiled at his apology. He curled his right arm up under his head.
“Don’t worry about it. I thought you hated me for some reason, but I know better now. I’m not upset.” He nodded and wiped at his eyes again.
“There really isn’t anything I can say to make you feel any better. And I’m sure you know that time is the only thing that can heal you.”
“Yeah. I know. I’ll get through this. It’s just going to be hard.” I nodded, knowing exactly what he was talking about.
“Well, maybe we can heal together. What do you say?” I saw a fleeting glimpse of a smile rake across his full lips as he nodded and blinked.
“Come on. Why don’t you go up to your room and sleep on a real bed tonight. It’ll make you feel better.”
“Okay. I’ll be up in a little bit.” I nodded and smiled one last time, patting his hand before grabbing my duffle and stepping away.
“Jordyn?” His voice had a hint of urgency in it. I turned to see him poke his head out of his bunk and look at me.
“Thank you.” I smiled and nodded.
“You’re welcome, Frank.” I turned and exited the bus, taking a nearby elevator to meet Gerard in the main lobby.
