“Roxy! Sit!” Ville yelled weakly. He was reclining on the couch because he didn’t have the energy to do anything but lay there next to Frank.
Roxy was the only one who still had the energy to pace back and forth. She looked at the two men collapsed on the couch and gasped. She’d been so worried about Jade she hadn’t noticed that they were both an ashy grey and could barley move, “Oh, look at you!” she ran up to Ville and presented her wrist, encouraging him to bite down.
He looked up at her gratefully and sank his fangs into her, drinking her blood. Not much, just enough to return some color to his cheeks and enable him to get off the couch. He wiped his lips delicately, “Thank you Darling.” He stood up, “I’m going to take a shower, and then I’m going to go eat.”
“Okay.” Roxy said, hugging him before giving Frank her arm as well.
Ville went up into the bathroom and threw his pants in the trash before getting into the shower. He sighed, resting his head against the tiles, remembering the look on Davey’s face. A mixture of horror, disbelief and revulsion.
Tears joined the pink tinged water running down his face.
He got out of the shower and dried himself off, wrapping the towel around his waist before going into his room. The prospect of pulling on clothes and going out to actively hunting a person seemed too daunting a task so he crawled under the covers and buried himself in pillows, falling asleep.
Ville woke abruptly hours after the sun had set knowing he wasn’t alone in the bed. He turned over, half hoping to find Davey, but he wasn’t exactly disappointed to find Roxy curled next to him, with tear tracks running down her face and her big brown eyes bloodshot and puffy.
“Hello love.” He wrapped his arms around her, knowing that if she was coming to him for support, she was nearer to the breaking point than he imagined.
She sniffed, “I can’t be alone right now.”
“I know. It’s going to be okay.”
“Davey called.”
He pulled back a little and looked into her eyes, “And?”
“They don’t know. He’s not dead but no one can say how long it’s going to stay that way. His brother is coming down.” She buried her face in his shoulder, “I don’t know what I’m going to do if he dies.”
Ville squeezed her, not knowing what to say.
“I know what you were talking about now. I love him so much, if he dies, I don’t think I’d make it.”
Ville understood all too well how she was feeling. Just like he did after Bam died, “Sweetheart, let’s not think of the worst case scenario right now. He’s still alive and every minute he stays that way gets him one closer to totally better.”
“He knows Ville. He knows about you and me and Frankie, and he doesn’t care.” She started crying again.
They both turned at a knock on the door.
“Yes?” Ville said by way of permission to enter.
Davey poked his head in, looking pale and wan underneath the dried streaks of blood and hospital gown they’d given him to replace his shirt, “I don’t want to intrude.” He’d come home after Smith Puget had kicked him out of the hospital, telling him to get some sleep because he was going to take the next few shifts. Voices coming from the bedroom made him pause for a second before knocking. He didn’t think about anything other than the fact that he wanted to be held by the man he loved. Apparently, he wasn’t the only one.
And to anyone else at any other time, the sight of his lover in bed with someone else wearing only a towel, would have caused some problems.
“I was just leaving.” Roxy sniffed and moved to stand.
Ville pulled her back down, “You’re not going to be by yourself honey.” But he shoved over so there was enough room on his other side for Davey, “I think there’s some things the three of us need to talk about anyway.”
“As long as you’re talking, can you ask Davey if I should be getting out of dodge?” Frank called from his room.
Ville chuckled tiredly, “Frankie, come here.”
He popped his head over Davey’s shoulder, “I don’t want to bug, but I figure after everything, it would be a nice gesture to give me a head start.”
Davey looked back at him, “Frankie, I’m not going to do anything. Right now all I want to do is sleep.” At these words he kicked off his shoes and crawled into bed next to Ville, snuggling into his side, “We can talk when we’ve all had some sleep.”
Roxy held her arms out to Frank and he climbed in bed as well and they all slept, even Roxy.
Ville woke up with Davey and Frank still in his bed, both men curled around him. He lifted his head and saw Roxy curled in a chair on the balcony, weeping softly.
Gently, he untangled himself from Frank and Davey, pulling on pants, he joined her, “Don’t cry my love.” He whispered, putting his arms around her.
She sobbed into his arm, “His brother just called. His heart stopped twice last night and they say he’s probably not going to make it.”
He held her tighter and rocked a little, “But he’s still alive now. That’s all you should be thinking about.”
They both looked over at the door as it opened and Frank came out, lighting a cigarette, “So yesterday sucked.”
Roxy laughed without humor, “That would be a gross understatement.”
Ville sat back and lit his own cigarette, “That son of a bitch is still out there too.”
“He couldn’t have gotten far. He was too badly wounded.” Davey yawned, taking the last unoccupied chair on the deck. He’d washed off most of the blood from his face and arms, and he’d pulled on a shirt.
“Smith called.” Roxy said quietly, “It doesn’t look good.”
Davey nodded and wiped at the tears that spilled down his cheeks, “Thanks.”
Roxy had stopped trying to wipe away her tears. They ran freely down her face, the entire neckline of her Agent Orange shirt was soaked.
“So all three of you then?” Davey said suddenly, looking at Ville.
Ville looked away and nodded, “I didn’t want to lie, but then you told me who you were and-” he stopped, hitting his cigarette with more attention than the task warranted.
“What’s you’re real name?”
“Ville Valo.” He whispered.
Davey’s first thought was that it was beautiful, fitting of the man he loved. It certainly fit better than Ralph. He inhaled, “How old are you?”
“Seventy five.”
“And you?” he looked at Frank.
“Hmm,” he thought back, “Fifty eight.”
“Five hundred and sixty.” Roxy said before Davey could ask.
Davey’s jaw dropped. He’d never met a vampire so old. The ones he’d killed in the past had all been relatively young -around Ville and Frank’s age- and inexperienced, “Oh.” Was all he could manage to say.
“God you’re old.” Frank said, throwing his cigarette butt in the planter he was sitting next to, not missing the glare Roxy gave him since she was the one who usually cleaned.
“Exceptionally.” She agreed before turning to Davey, “So are you going to tell your shadowy ‘They’ about us?”
Davey shook his head, “No. I never even told them about you Frankie.” He hung his head, “I’m so confused right now. None of you have tried to rip my throat out, or make me your evil spawn, and you’ve been really cool to me, even knowing that my mission in life is to kill you.” He sighed and looked up, “How long did you know?”
“Since you told me you’re name is Merchand.” Ville said.
He laughed tiredly, “Well fuck. Let’s just leave it at I’m not going to kill you or tell the others about you, ever.”
Ville wanted to ask him what that meant between the two of them, but he thought it would have to wait until they were alone.
“We’ve got to find Pete.” Roxy said, “So I can kill him.”
“I’m going to kill him.” Davey said, looking at Roxy, “Jade’s been my best friend for most of my life. I’m killing Pete.”
She nodded reluctantly. Davey could have the last blow fine, but she was going to skin him first and tie knots in all his nerve endings. She stood, “Well I’m going to go to the hospital.”
Frank stood as well, “I’ll go with you.”
“Be careful.” Ville said as they left, receiving a tight smile from Roxy and a wink from Frank. He shook his head, “Nothing fazes that kid.”
Davey gave a halfhearted answer because his mind was really on weather or not Ville, God what a beautiful name, still wanted him.
“What do we do now?” Ville asked quietly, looking deep into Davey’s eyes.
Davey stared back, “I don’t know.”
“Now that everything’s out in the open, and you know what I am,” Ville looked away, “what are we?”
Davey stood and went to Ville, sitting in his lap, wrapping his arms around him, “Ville,” he said slowly, rolling the name on his tongue like a good tea, “I love you. That hasn’t changed.”
Ville laid his head on Davey’s chest, “Say that again?”
“Ville, I love you.” He kissed the top of his head.
“I love you too Davey.” That was as far as Ville wanted to think as he tipped his face up to get a proper kiss from Davey. Davey was more than happy to oblige, kissing Ville long and deep.
They made love right there on the balcony, slowly, taking their time now that all their secrets had been purged and they truly felt that they knew the other person.
“Ville.” Was the single word Davey sighed as he orgasmed with his lover close on his heels and Ville almost wept from happiness.
Pete was absolutely livid. ‘How dare they keep me from my Davey?’ he tore out a good sized chunk of the passenger seat of his car and slammed his hands against the already cracked steering wheel. ‘Those meddling vampires were going to die! All of them. Even if I have to wait decades, fuck it centuries if I have to.’ He stared his car and pulled out of the church parking lot he’d been in and headed for the nearest motel, trying to formulate another plan.
As he was settling into his room, it came to him.
“Ville,” Davey said, softly, “I’m going to go to the hospital. Will you come with me?”
They were lying in Ville’s bed basking in the afterglow of another lovemaking session, enjoying what felt like the calm before the storm.
“Of course my love.” Ville said, sitting up.
“You know,” Davey said thoughtfully as he pulled on his jeans, “I think if Jade dies, I’m not going to kill Pete.” At Ville’s shocked look he grinned with absolutely no mirth, “I’m going to send him back to the base let our researchers have him.”
Ville shivered, “What do they do?” he asked reluctantly.
“They test different myths about vampires.” He said simply and tied his shoes, “Ready?”
Jade was a sad sight in his narrow hospital bed. Underneath his tan, he was pale, his eyes were sunken and shadowed, his cheeks hollow. A massive bandage covered his entire shoulder. Wires ran from him to ominously beeping machines, his breathing was shallow and rattled in his chest.
A bleary eyed Smith greeted Davey at the door, “Hey Dave.”
Davey hugged Jade’s brother, “Hi Smith. How’s he doing?”
Smith shrugged and gestured to the bed where Roxy was sitting, clutching one long fingered, terribly limp hand in her own, whispering to him.
A tear leaked from Davey’s unlined eye and he reached behind him to lock his fingers with Ville’s, “Smith, this is Ville.”
“Hi.” Smith said distractedly as he looked over his should when one of the machines stuttered.
“Hello.” Ville said, watching Roxy sadly.
They went in the room and sat down around the bed, Davey taking Jade’s other hand in his free one, trying not to think about how still his friend was, “Where’d Frankie go?”
“Starbuck’s.” Roxy said quietly, “He said that we all need some real coffee because the hospital shit was going to make us insane and maybe the smell would wake Jade up.”
Davey smiled in spite of himself, “He might be right. Although he probably should have gotten a bagel. Jade’s a fiend for them.”
Smith smiled sadly, remembering all the times the band would get on the bus to discover Jade had eaten all the bagels, again. He laid his head down on his tattooed arms and his shoulders shook as he wept silently.
Roxy picked up the thread of her monologue to Jade and effectively shut out everyone else.
Ville put his arms around Davey and allowed the younger man to rest his head on his shoulder. He looked up as Frank walked in, trying to hide the drink carrier from Starbuck’s and the rich aroma of overpriced coffee filled the room.
He handed cups to Roxy and Smith and looked apologetically at Davey and Ville, “Sorry. Didn’t know you’d be here when I got back.” He sat in a chair by Jade’s feet and sipped his own drink.
“It’s alright.” Ville moved so he and Davey were more comfortable.
The room was silent except for Roxy’s whispering and the steady beeping of the machines reassuring them all that Jade was still alive.
A nurse kicked everyone but Smith out when visiting hours were over. Roxy, Ville, Davey and Frank went home not being able to think of anywhere else to go.
As they walked up to the door, something hard hit Frank in the back of the head.
“What the fuck?” he turned along with the rest of the group to see what happened and they all saw Pete run away down the street.
Ville and Frank took off after him. Roxy paused long enough to throw her car keys at Davey and say, “Take the car!” before following the guys on foot after Pete.
Davey wasted no time in peeling out after them.
