Rebecca put a hand to her mouth to stifle the laughter that was threatening to erupt fully. Boy had they gotten themselves into a blunder. Now the question was just how were they going to get out of it. She laughed softly, leaning over to whisper back to Patrick.
“Wow. Any ideas on what to do?”
“None. Do you have any ideas?”
Rebecca shook her head, still giggling under her breath. Boy could this get sticky. Rebecca glanced over at her brother with a questioning look. He shrugged and then walked over to kneel down between the two, keeping his voice low, smirk never leaving his face.
“Why don’t you guys just play the part? The only people I know here are Marla’s family and ours. It can’t help to have a spot of fun.”
Rebecca laughed a little more. Of course he would suggest such a thing. She wouldn’t mind it too much, but there were a few problems. She didn’t want to lie to her friend, especially after not having talked in so long.
“Pete, she doesn’t have a ring. What kind of proposal would it be without a ring? Certainly not one of mine. It’s going to be all planned out and perfect when I ask.”
“Becca, just use Aiden’s ring. I know you still wear it, or at the very least you carry it with you.”
Rebecca’s laughter died at the mention of that name. Of course she still wore the ring that he had given to her. He had (in his own twisted way) died for her. And that still shook her up. Sometimes she still felt as if she needed to still claim him as hers. Rebecca pulled the ring from her right hand and held it out, as if seeing it for the first time. It seemed like ages ago when Aiden had given her the ring. It had been ages ago, because she had changed so much in those years.
Pete reached out and took the ring, giving it to Patrick. He motioned with his eyes for Patrick to put the ring on her finger. It was a rather funny exchange to be sure. Although it was made even more funny when Rebecca heard giggling coming from behind her. She turned to see Ivy standing behind her, and was a little confused at first, then remembered that Ivy was Pete’s date for the wedding.
“About time, Patrick. I thought you would never propose.”
Rebecca laughed at her friend’s response, although she could easily turn the teasing back on Ivy. She looked down at her hand where Aiden’s ring was on her left hand, which was still in Patrick’s hand. It was a little weird to see, but in some weird fashion, it seemed right. She laughed and shook her head lightly to clear her head again.
“Pete, let’s go dance and let the two newly-engaged have their moment.”
Rebecca just rolled her eyes at her friend, giving her a look that told her she would get it later. She turned her attention back to Patrick as Ivy pulled Pete (rather forcibly) out onto the makeshift dance floor. She bit her bottom lip lightly, not really knowing what to say at the moment.
“I don’t know what’s more awkward, this or a stadium full of screaming fans who want to tackle us and do god only knows what to us.”
“Oh, I don’t think this could be THAT terrible. Although I’m a little worried what Mom might have to say. Perhaps we can explain ... or just let them think what they will. That would certainly be fun. First I should ask, are you okay with this? I mean, just because Pete said we should do this, doesn’t mean we have to. He’s not god, you know.”
Rebecca smiled as Patrick laughed at her last comment. It made her feel good to know that he was at least a little open to the idea, and not just following along with the idea because her brother had suggested it. Because she had noticed sometimes that Pete overshadowed everyone else.
“I’m okay with it. I mean, if you are. I mean, the bride is your friend. I don’t know any of the people here aside from your family. It’s really your choice. So I suppose it’s sorta like a real proposal. It doesn’t really have any weight until the lady makes her decision. So, milady, what is your decision?”
Rebecca giggled (a bit girlishly, she was ashamed to admit) at his dramatics. She really thought he would be great on the stage, if he had a little more confidence and less shyness. She leaned over with a bright smile, stopping just inches from his face.
“I most humbly thank you for your offer. And my answer is ... yes.”
Rebecca smiled as she said this, closing the few inches and kissing him again. Hopefully this time they wouldn’t be interrupted though. But she really didn’t know what caused her to think such a thing. After all, was she falling for her best friend?
