Mikey crouched down behind the sign for the park in the center of the community panting heavily. Autumn and Frank collapsed to the ground, relying on the bushes and the concrete block to shield them from sight.
Frank had some nasty scrapes on his face from running through bushes and Autumn was limping slightly, thanks to her late, but unlamented boss. Mikey had a couple of sluggishly bleeding cuts from landing on the broken glass outside of the patio during their jump from Autumn’s window.
They were all breathing hard and crying. Bob was gone. They hadn’t seen Frankie get him, but they all knew he was gone. It was just a feeling.
Mikey’s phone rang, startling them all. Autumn stifled a scream in her arm.
He fumbled it open and answered whit a whispered, “Hello?”
“Mikey! You’re all right! Are Frankie and Autumn still with you?” Gerard’s voice was nearly hysterical and he was breathing heavily.
“Yeah but-” Mikey was cut off.
“Listen to me. I need you to meet me back at the house. I know how to make it stop! Come back to the house.” He said, out of breath. Mikey could hear his brother’s feet pounding the pavement, “All of you!”
“Bob’s gone. He got-”
“Died Mikey. He got died.” Gerard said abruptly, “I know. I need you and Frankie and Autumn to come back to the house okay? We’re the only one’s who can stop it!”
“What? All-” Mikey didn’t finish the sentence when he realized he was speaking to no one. He slid his phone back in his pocket and turned to his friends, “Gee said we had to go back to the house. He knows how to stop it!”
“Are you fucking nuts? You want us to go back to the house? Why don’t we just go stand in the street and hang, ‘Please Spear Me’ signs around our necks?” Frank spat.
“Gee said he knows how to stop it. Do you have a better plan?” Autumn retorted.
Frank shook his head.
“Well then let’s go.” Mikey helped them off the ground and they took off for the house, sacrificing speed for stealth as they slipped from shrub to shrub and in between people’s hedges, hiding behind cars and every available cover they could find, all the time listening for the sound of wooden footsteps and looking for signs of Frankie coming after them. It was a tense journey and it took them twice as long to get back as it did to run through their whole neighborhood.
They got to the house ready to drop from a heart attack, they were so wired.
Autumn looked around behind her to see if Frank was following her and her heart nearly gave out as Gerard burst from the bushes across the street.
“Holy fucking shit!” she gasped, grasping her chest.
Mikey and Frank both turned, expecting the worst.
Mikey’s face collapsed in relief and he ran to his brother, “God Gee! You’re alright!” he embraced him.
“How do we get rid of him?” Frank asked, panicking at being so exposed. He shepherded them into the back yard, “Come on Gee, how the fuck do we make it fucking end?”
Gerard stumbled a little as his exhausted legs gave out and he sat heavily on a patio chair, “We have to sacrifice more blood to him and then we all have to say, ‘Eu emito-lhe para tras a seu estado dormir.’” He shook his head. Later he would be amazed that he remembered that, “I don’t know what the fuck it means, but it’s supposed to make hi turn back into a doll and then we can bury hi somewhere deep in the ground where no one is ever going to fucking find him.”
“That’s it?” Mikey laughed, “That’s fucking all we’ve got to do?” he wiped so blood off of his shoulder and threw it on the ground, “Fuck!” he screamed and grabbed the sides of his head.
Autumn looked around nervously, afraid that Frankie might have heard him yell.
“So how do we get him to come here so we can throw some more blood on him?” Frank asked, leaning against the wall of the house.
“I really don’t think we’re going to have to wait that long for him to come get us.” Gerard said defeated. He still couldn’t believe that Ryan was dead. He’d finally found someone he wanted to spend the rest of his life with and he’d been taken away. It was only slightly overshadowed by the grief that absolutely choked him when he thought about losing Ray. One of his very best friends. His second brother.
“Gee!” Autumn hissed, shaking him from his thoughts.
He looked where she was pointing and watched as Frankie walked slowly and menacingly toward them, spear raised.
“Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit!” Frank said backing up. His sneakers crunching over glass.
“Now Frankie! For Christ’s sake!” Gerard yelled and grabbed him, along with a piece of glass from the floor. He cut open his hand and slashed Frank’s as well.
Autumn too the hint and cut her own palm. Mikey squeezed more blood from his existing cuts and the four of them advanced toward the Vengeance Demon with their bloody hands outstretched.
Frankie stopped moving. He looked at them curiously, black eyes blinking slowly.
The blinking scared Frank more than the spear that was now resting at his side. Why does a wooden statue need to blink?
Each of them pressed a palm to the demon and drew back. Four prints in blood decorated the wooden chest.
“Okay,” Gerard said slowly, not wanting to aggravate the demon, “Now say it.”
“Eu emito-lhe para tras a seu estado dormir.” The recited carefully, in wavering voices. Or at least most of the did.
Mikey left out the first word.
The Vengeance Demon frowned at him.
They screamed as the large spear arced downward, straight into Mikey’s shoulder.
“Mikey!” Autumn and Gerard screamed at the same time, running to him. They caught him as he fell to the floor and lowered him gently.
Frank let out an unmanly shriek as Frankie started to advance on him, “Guys! Why isn’t he stopping?” he ran around the patio furniture.
“I fucked it up.” Mikey coughed, blood leaking from his mouth and flooding from his neck, “Again.” He said weakly, “We’ve got to say it again.”
Autumn couldn’t see through her tears. She pressed her hands to the wound in Mikey’s shoulder, “Oh god, call an ambulance!”
“No time. Gonna get Frankie.” Mikey insisted, “Say it again.”
“Frankie! Say it again!” Gerard yelled as the short man dodged another swipe with the spear.
“Alright!” he said, falling back on his butt, staring up at the massive chunk of wood that wanted to end him.
They repeated the words for the last time, this time all of them getting it correct.
~*~*~*~*~
Frank sat up in bed abruptly with a small gasp, looking around. It had been a while since he’d had that dream. He looked down at Autumn when she made a noise at his jostling and turned over, mumbling something softly. Gerard put his arms around her and she settled back into sleep.
Frank thought back on the last year. They'd burried four friends and no one understood what had happened. They didn't believe them, but a lack of evidence and the fact that the three survivors stubbornly stuck to the story forced the police to drop all charges and move the file to the cold cases. Someday, he hoped it would end up in the FBI's X Files and some Mulder and Scully copies would investigate.
A few months after the funerals, Frank Gerard and Autumn had boutght a house in Upland, near The Village. They had started sleeping in the same bed for comfort. It was the only way any of them could get any sleep because they were the only one's who knew, who understood why the movie Trilogy of Terror made them cry, they were all that each had left in the world. They had started sleeping together for the same reasons. Frank and Gerard were the only men that Autumn knew would never hurt her now that Mikey was gone, Gerard, wanted to be as close as possible to the only real family he had left, and Frank wanted to do whatever he could to make them happy. After all they had been through, they were each other's worlds.
“Bad dream?” Gerard asked softly, startling Frank out of his thoughts.
Frank nodded, “Yeah. It’s alright.” He slid to the edge of the mattress and lit a cigarette.
Gerard released Autumn and went to sit next to him. He put an arm around the short man’s shoulders, squeezing lightly, “You wanna talk about it?” he took a drag from the cigarette Frank offered him.
Frank shook his head, “Nah.” All the sessions with a therapist convinced him that talking about it was not going to help.
Gerard knew what Frank was thinking as his own therapist had given up on him and politely asked him to come back when he wanted help with his delusions.
The smell of cigarettes and the low murmur of voices woke Autumn. She sat up, “What are you guys doing up so early?” she pulled on a shirt and kissed Frank gently before lighting her own cigarette.
“Frankie had a nightmare.” Gerard said before kissing her lightly as well.
“Anything I can do?” she asked, leaning her head on his shoulder.
He grinned and took her hand, guiding it to his lap and wrapping her slender fingers around his morning hard on.
Autumn rolled her eyes and handed her cigarette to Gerard before leaning over and kissing Frank before she climbed into his lap.
Gerard barely had time to stub out her cigarette and his in the ashtray next to the bed before he felt Frank’s fingers twine in his hair and yank him over to them.
