When Zac Met Jack
Everyone had arrived at Adam’s house in Manhattan on Thursday. They decided to make it a four-day weekend. Everyone had been there, from John Travolta with his wife Kelly Preston and their two children, a son and daughter, Jett and Ella.
James Marsden was there with his wife, Lisa Linde and their two children, Jack twelve, and Mary ten and a half. Christopher was there with his wife, as was Queen Latifah with her husband, a fellow rap singer and director.
Michelle attended looking fabulous for a woman of sixty. Her husband was with her, David E. Kelley and their adopted daughter Claudia who was eighteen (I am just guessing here, I have no idea) and their son John, fourteen.
Adam, John, Christopher and James had taken one look at Jack in the flesh and had been in awe. They saw Zac, a miniature version of Zac. It shined out him, no wonder Nikki had gone out of her way to hide him from the rest of the world, but Zac in particular.
Nikki had explained why she had done it. Zac explained how much he regrets what had happened and how he felt about Vanessa and their eight-year farce of a marriage.
Nikki explained she had done it to punish Zac for what he did to her, only ended up hurting him worse than he had her. Of course, Jack got hurt because he missed out on having Zac in his life.
Zac and Nikki both flushed brightly and avoided eye contact with each other and everybody else’s looks of knowing, as they admit they had always been in love with each other and always would be. Yes, they were going to try to make a go of having a relationship together.
Michelle and Queen Latifah had given her and Zac a good reprimanding, but said they understood perfectly why she had done it. There was nothing like a woman scorned, hell hath no fury on a woman scorned. Of course, Zac is a man and was quite young at the time. It was understandable and a given.
James and the rest of the men took a real shine to Jack, Jason and Ryan. Nikki was glad the older men had taken to her son’s. Michelle and Latifah found them adorable and claimed Nikki was incredibly lucky to have such beautiful little boys.
The women found Layla and Michelle the sweetest little girls. They told Zac, that just because he found his wife a lot less then desirable, their less then wanted marriage was not a complete waste, as he now had two beautiful daughters and that was worth so much.
The women marvelled at Brittany’s four and a half month baby bump, while the guys gave Curtis sly looks and patted him on the back. Everyone practically melted at the sight of two and a half month old Stephen and Sheldon Kelley.
The women laughed and exchanged experiences and congratulated Amanda. Amanda enjoyed talking with Michelle and Nikki, discussing the joys and woes of pregnancy and labour.
Elijah received the customary pat on the back from the men, congratulating him on his son’s. The happy couple were assured that they would all be definitely attending the wedding on New Year’s Day.
It was on the Friday, their first full day at Adams house, that Jack, Layla and Michelle finally came to blows, at least verbally. Zac let out moan, as his daughter’s screeched blue bloody murder at Jack and burst into tears, as the boy continued to glare at them hatefully.
Nikki cringed at the sound of it; it was piercing and sounded genuinely pissed. And she had never seen such a look of genuine hatred on her son’s face up until that moment. The look was very reminiscent of the look she had been on the receiving end of, after Zac had found out and confronted her over Jack.
Nikki let out a groan and exclaimed, “Jackson Zachary Efron, what did you do to your sisters?” Everyone took note of the stern and motherly tone in her voice and the stern glower on her face and her hands placed firmly on her hips.
And much to everyone’s surprise Jack turned around to face her and Zac and slowly walked up to her and complained, “But mum, they started wounding me up over how they had dad all to themselves and I didn’t. And then Layla said he preferred her and her sister over me, saying I should just leave their dad alone.”
He glowered and spat, “Like come on, would you rather I told them what I think, or would you like me do what I really wanted to do. Uncle Elijah, he always told me to never hit a girl. Well, I really would like to slap both of them.”
He continued to glower as he told them what he said, “I told them that I was older and they were jealous, all because they weren’t always going to be having all of dad’s attention on them. They didn’t like that. It isn’t fare; they’re jealous and immature, Mum.”
He added in pure hatred, “They’ve always had him, I didn’t. It’s my turn and I’m taking it, they can go and squeal and play with their stupid pink and ugly Barbie's for all I care.”
Everyone was standing around to see what Zac and Nikki would do. They all instantly noticed the pissed expression that had suddenly covered both of their faces.
Nikki turned sharply on her heel and shot Zac a look of death. For such a small woman, Nikki couldn’t half be intimidating. Nikki spat at him, “That is just lovely, just god damn lovely, Zac.”
She growled “What the hell has that bitch ex-wife of yours been telling her daughter’s. How else would they know that Jack has had no contact with you, or that you didn’t know he was your son?”
She hissed coldly, as her less than stellar feelings for the other woman were dripping in venom and was there in full view. “You need to tell her to keep her gob shut, or at least sprout crap like that around when her daughters can’t hear it.”
She commented in disgusted venom, “I won’t tolerate her stupid jealousy. How dare she taint her daughters with such vile and cruel jealousy?”
She remarked sternly, with more than a little frustration. “I was expecting Jack and your daughters to be jealous of each other. It is natural and a given. Young children tend to feel this with the loss of attention and the attention is being shared between them and new and younger siblings. Jack was the same for a short time after Jason and Ryan were first born.”
She concluded, “But what Jack said his sisters said to him, was more than just jealousy. They are far too young to think of such things on their own, at least not without the first hand influences from a parent or another adult. Like Corbin, Vanessa’s new fiancé for example.”
Zac growled, “This is Corbin and Vanessa’s fault. Vanessa always had a spiteful and vindictive streak. Sadly, that streak has been passed onto Layla and Michelle in a much more immature degree. Unfortunately it will only turn more spiteful and crueller the older they get.”
He added, before walking over to his daughters, “I’m finally going to have this out with Vanessa. Corbin he’s a bad influence on my daughters, as they were never this cruel or prone to this kind of jealousy, not until I was no longer living with them and their mother.”
He went on, his anger evident, “She is jealous, all because I’ve started seeing you. She has always been jealous of you Nikki. She’s always known that deep down it were always you I wanted and never her.”
He added in disgust, “And the only reason she wanted to invite you to that farce that she called a wedding, was to rub it in your face, that she had supposedly won and to stake her claim over me, like the possessive and vindictive bitch she is.”
He concluded, “I was hurt, but at the same time glad that neither you, Elijah, Amanda, Brittany, nor the rest of the Hairspray cast attended.” Nikki nodded at him, understanding where he was coming from. She wasn’t necessarily pissed at Zac, as it wasn’t actually his fault, well not entirely anyhow.
Nikki crouched down and cuddled her son to her, as she saw the angry and hurt tears that were streaming down his face. Zac saw this and felt his gut clench at the sight of it. Vanessa was seriously going to pay for the damage she had caused. Sure, the girls had dished it out, but it was under her influence.
Nikki looked up to see the pained look of anger on his face. She knew that anger was not directed her or Jack, but at Vanessa. She said, “Go and sort your daughters out Zac, I’ll deal with Jack.”
Zac reluctantly nodded and turned on his heel with one last look of pained longing at his son and the woman he loved. Layla and Michelle looked up when they saw their father walking towards them, he looked angry and they knew why.
Layla admitted that perhaps she and Michelle had done too far. It was just that they had heard their mother talking with Corbin. And on top of that, Jack looked so much like their father, that it was more than a small shock to the system.
Zac took each of his daughter’s by the hand, one on either side of him and all but marched them out of the room. John exchanged a look with Christopher and James. Adam couldn’t believe how much had changed and the younger stars of Hairspray had grown so much, Zac and Nikki especially.
Once Zac had led his daughters into the other room, he closed the door and turned to face them. Both girls went to protest, but stopped dead at the raised hand in warning for them to be silent. And the stern glance their father shot them, they knew that look. It had never been turned on them before, only their mother, which instantly told both sisters that they were in serious trouble.
Zac begun by asking Layla, “Layla, what exactly did you overhear your mother and Corbin talking about?” Layla replied, looking nervous. She bit her lower lip and said, “Mum was telling Corbin that Nikki had kept Jack away from you and was now only letting you know about him to get back at her and rub it in her face, that you weren’t completely faithful to her.”
Michelle added, “And that you were going to end up giving Jack all the attention and forget about me and Layla. That’s why we did and said what we did to Jack. Is it true, will you really only love Jack and forget about me and Layla?”
Zac felt his blood boil suddenly with a blinding rage. How dare she, Nikki was right, Vanessa had tainted the girls with her lies and cruel jealousy. He didn’t want that for his daughters. He didn’t want them to be cruel, twisted, and manipulative like their mother, who was only out to gain what she could and use it to her advantage regardless of who she stomped on to do it.
Zac kneeled down in front of his daughters and took one of their small hands each in his own much larger hands. He sighed and told them, “Your mother is wrong, very, very wrong. I love you both dearly, but I also feel the same about Jack. “
He added quickly, when he saw their eyes widen in alarm. “Listen, I don’t love the three of you any more or less, I love all three of you just the same. And of course, you two had me all to yourselves growing up, Jack sadly never had that.”
He added, “It is his turn now. He and I need to get to know each other. All the special firsts I shared with you two, I never had that with your brother. Do you think you could find it in yourselves to share my attention and affections with your brother?”
Layla had tears in her bright blue eyes as she asked, “But why didn’t he have what we had with you” Michelle asked, “And why do we have different mums?”
Zac looked thoughtful for a moment, before he smiled at his daughters. He asked, “Would it be ok if I allowed Nikki and your brother to come in. Nikki will help me explain everything to you?”
Layla asked, “She won’t be angry with us, will she?” Zac shook his head and replied, “No. She’s angry, but it’s your mother she’s angry at, not you and your sister, I promise.” Layla and Michelle nodded and agreed to Nikki and Jack coming in.
Ten minutes later, with a little persuading from Zac and Nikki, Jack entered the room in front of his mother. He completely ignored his sisters and stood by the window on the far side of the room. Zac and Nikki cringed at this, while Layla and Michelle looked like he had slapped them like he had said he had wanted to.
Nikki smiled at the girls gently; she would not judge them by their mother’s antics, or because of their looks, as they couldn’t help genetics. You couldn’t choose your parents that were just the way it was.
Zac explained to Nikki, that Layla and Michelle had a few questions. Nikki smirked at him, accusing him of being too chicken to do it on his own. Zac had shot back, that maybe he wouldn’t have that problem if the entire situation between he, Vanessa and her wasn’t so fucked up. Nikki had refused to dignify what he had said with answer, in less start another raging argument.
Nikki started to explain. “The reason as to why your father hadn’t met your older brother until recently and didn’t know they were related, because your father hurt me. So I thought I was in a way punishing your father for hurting me.”
Michelle asked, “What did he do wrong, did he slap you or tease you?” Nikki chuckled and replied, “No he didn’t. Your father hurt my heart, when he said and did some mean things that grownups sometimes do to each other without meaning or wanting to.”
Layla asked, “Do you forgive him now?” Nikki chuckled; they were so adorable and inquisitive, which was a sure trait from their father. Zac in Nikki’s opinion should have been a lawyer or a police officer, with his ability to interrogate you until you buckled under the onslaught of questioning.
“Yes, I forgive him, as I ended up hurting him to, because I didn’t let him see or know Jack belonged to him.” She added, “Your father said you were also wondering why you and Jack have different mothers. Well, that easy enough to explain.”
She went on after a brief pause. “Your father was intimate with me, like all mums and dads are. I ended up pregnant with your brother and because he is Jack’s father, means Jack is your brother.” She added, “Just like you came along when your father was intimate with your mother.”
She continued, “Just like Jack is related to Jason and Ryan, they are his brother’s because I’m his mother and I’m also their mother. But like you and Jack share the same father, Jack, Jason and Ryan don’t. Jason and Ryan have a different father, just like you have a different mother then Jack.”
She finally asked, “Do you understand what I’m telling you?” Layla replied, “Yeah, I think so. You’re saying Jack is mine and Michelle’s brother, because his dad is our dad and we can still be related even if we don’t have the same mum.” Nikki nodded, “Exactly.”
Michelle added, “Yeah I get it too. Jack wouldn’t be related to us if our dad wasn’t his dad as well.” Zac nodded, “That’s right. Now do you both understand that Jack won’t be replacing either one of you, just like Jason and Ryan never replaced Jack with his mother?”
He added, “I have enough love to go around, I don’t have a favourite one of you that I favour over the other you are all equal. I love you all the same, you are all my children.”
Layla and Michelle nodded, saying they understood that Jack wasn’t trying to take their dad away from them, that they would only have to share like they did with their toys.
Layla asked, “But why did mum and Corbin say what they did then?” Zac replied, “Because your mum doesn’t like that I don’t love her anymore and don’t want to be with her anymore. Plus your mother was being intimate with Corbin when she shouldn’t have been.”
Nikki added, “You know how your parents and grandparents are always telling you to share with each other. And your dad asked you if you are willing to share his love and affections with Jack” Layla and Michelle nodded.
Nikki went on at their nods. “Well, it’s ok to share that kind of love with other family members. But it is wrong to share the kind of love that I and your dad share, or your grandparents share. share the kind of love that brought Jack and you into the world. That love is a special kind that is only meant to be shared between grownups.”
Michelle said, “So mum was bad and mean to dad, by sharing her love with Corbin.” Layla added “Yeah, because Corbin started visiting mum when me and Michelle were three. She used to tell us to go and play in our room with our toys or she’d turn up the TV for us.”
Michelle added, “Then they would make these loud noises. Mum always told us to stay where we were and not come in the room, no matter what we heard, as it didn’t concern us, that we were too young to understand.”
Nikki gasped and shot a look of revulsion in Zac’s direction. She cringed, as she placed a hand over her mouth at the seething expression on his face. She did not pity Vanessa when Zac went and dropped the girls off on Sunday night. The shit was going to hit the fan.
