Chapter 14: Don’t Speak
∞♥♥♥♥∞
The first night, I thought Chris and I had it made. Both babies had slept through the night. By the second night, however, I swear we had to get up every two hours. It was horrible! I didn’t regret getting the twins, but a part of me sure wished I had thought a little bit more about what having twins meant.
The thing that made it all worth while, was a father-daughter moment I witnessed one night, a few days after the twins had arrived.
I woke up in the middle of the night. I don’t know what had woken me, but I was awake. I looked to my side to watch Chris sleep, and saw that he wasn’t there. So, I climbed out of bed, wondering if he had gotten up without me to take care of the babies. I didn’t hear them crying. I couldn’t imagine him taking care of both of them at once. It was hard enough for us to take care of the twins when there were two of us!
I headed to Colin’s room first, and saw that he was fast asleep. I pondered going in and giving him a kiss, but I didn’t want to wake him. Instead, I shut his door as quietly as I could, and headed to Bliss’ room. Her door was part way open, and as I neared it, I could hear Chris quietly singing “Beautiful Dreamer.”
I peered into the room, and saw him feeding her a bottle and gently rocking her in the rocking chair. I stood there for a few moments, enjoying watching him. It was one of the most beautiful sights I’d ever seen. I fell even more love for Chris at that moment.
When he finished the song, he burped her, then carried her to the bed, and ever so gently lay her down in her crib. He covered her tiny frame with the blankets, and just stared down at her for a moment.
I crept into the room, and wrapped my arms around Chris from behind. “You shouldn’t be singing ‘wake unto thee.’ We don’t want her to wake,” I teased, whispering of course.
He looked back at me and smiled. “I just felt like singing that song to her.”
“It was beautiful. You’re beautiful.” I kissed his lips.
He moaned into the kiss.
“Why didn’t you wake me up?” I asked.
“Only Bliss was crying, and you looked so peaceful sleeping. I figured I could handle her.” He grinned. “You can get up the next time only one twin is crying.”
I grinned in return. “Deal.”
We looked at Bliss again, who was sleeping so peacefully.
Chris gently leaned down and kissed her cheek. I did as well once he was done.
Chris glanced at the clock, and then nodded towards the door. “Come on,” he whispered. “It’s after three in the morning. Let’s see if we can salvage some sleep before Colin wakes up.”
I nodded, and followed him out of the room. “Or Bliss wakes up again,” I whispered as he fully shut the door behind us.
“I hear ya,” he said, taking my hand and leading me to the bedroom.
“I love the twins, but it’s weird going to bed too tired to have sex,” I said as we climbed into bed.
He smiled, and playfully backhanded my stomach. “You just wait. One day soon, you’ll be so in the mood that you won’t care how tired you are.”
I grinned. “I don’t doubt it.”

By the time the twins were six months, Isabella has moved. She came over one day to say goodbye to us and the twins. We were surprised. She said that her roommate, Toni, had been offered a job in London, and Toni was going to take it. Toni had invited Isabella to live with her there. Isabella didn’t want to be left alone, so she had looked into employment in London, and found a good-paying job as a secretary there. Isabella told us it would be easier for her to be away from her twins. She wanted to get away from the town that her family and fiance died in. She wanted to make a fresh life for herself. As much as she loved the twins, she told us it would be easier to let them go if she didn’t have to live so close to them.
So, she bid thew twins a tear-filled goodbye, and moved.
Blake told me he was grateful that she was gone, but at the same time, felt a little badly about it. He didn’t want to be a jerk. He just wanted he and I to be the only parents to the twins, so he was relieved she was gone.
I confessed that I felt the same way. I was glad she had moved.
My parents came up to meet the babies. They had cooed over them so much. I knew the twins would be spoiled as soon as my parents had come in with two trash bags full of toys and clothes for the twins. I was happy to see my mother had gotten the twins more Sunday clothes. I loved the idea of dressing the twins up fancy!
None of our American Idol friends (aside from Sanjaya, Shyamali, and Jordin, who had already seen them) had had time to come visit the baby yet. Though LaKisha said she really wanted to, and was trying to work something out in her schedule.
Anyway, the twins were now on solid foods, and currently, Blake was feeding Colin, and I was feeding Bliss in their high chairs.
“You know, baby, you’re going to have to start growing more hair so that I can brush it,” I said to Bliss. I ran a hand over the few wisps of light brown hair that she was finally starting to grow.
Bliss smiled at me, and I couldn’t help but smile back. Her little smile was contagious! My heart had just soared the first time I saw her smiling at me, and it had never grown old. Her first smile had been at three months. Colin smiled shortly afterwards, and it made my heart sore again. Blake and I truly had the most beautiful babies any parent could ask for.
Blake had been ecstatic too, and had made sure the camera was on hand at all times until he had finally gotten a shot of them smiling.
“Would you like me to brush your hair when you have some to brush? Daddy can make it look all pretty like a princess’,” I told her. She smiled again. I knew she couldn’t understand what I was talking about, but it made me happy that I had made her happy anyway.
Three months later, LaKisha was finally able to come down and visit. The twins were crawling now. I had captured them crawling on DVD, and Blake had taken pictures.
“Pretty soon they’ll be walking,” Blake said to me as he snapped picture after picture.
I grinned. “I think it takes almost two years for that. At least, that’s what my mom told me.”
“Well, our babies are smart. They’ll walk before that.” Blake smiled proudly at our babies.
I grinned. “We’ll see.”
Anyway, we were at the airport, looking for LaKisha. We had told her we’d pick her up.
“There she is!” Blake said, pointing over to the terminal, where LaKisha was just coming into view.
We ran over to her, and she grinned brightly at us.
“It’s Cake!” she said, holding out her arms.
We ran to her and hugged her.
“It’s good to see you again, ‘Kisha,” I said.
“Real good,” Blake added.
She squeezed us a little tighter, then let us go. “It’s good to see you guys too. Where are those beautiful babies I’ve heard so much about?”
“They’re with Kristi. She agreed to watch them while we went and got you. They were napping, and we didn’t want to wake them,” Blake explained.
“Well, let’s get my bags, and then we can head on over. I’m so eager to see them!” LaKisha said.
Blake and I nodded, and followed her down to the luggage carousel.
“So, where’s your daughter?” I asked.
“She’s staying with her grandma. I didn’t want her missing school.” LaKisha found her bags, and Blake grabbed them for her.
“Thank you,” she said to him.
“No problem. Now, let’s get home and get you to meet our babies,” he said.
We all grinned at each other, and then headed out of the airport.
I could hardly wait to show off Blake’s and my babies. I felt like a kid at show-and-tell, only this was way better than anything I had ever shown off at show-and-tell!”

When we arrived back home, Kristi was sitting on the couch with a book, glancing over it at the twins, who were crawling around on the floor.
“I hope you don’t mind. They woke from their naps, and didn’t want to go back to sleep,” she explained.
I smiled. “That’s fine.”
“Hey, LaKisha! It’s good to see you again.” She got up, and ran over to LaKisha.
“Hey, Kristi! Long time no see! It’s good seeing you too, honey,” LaKisha said, embracing her.
“How much do we owe you?” I asked, reaching into my pocket for my wallet.
“Please! You don’t owe me a thing. I love watching these two cuties,” Krisit said. She walked over to Colin and Bliss, and kissed their heads. “I’m gonna go now. I’ll see you two later.”
“We’re going out to dinner later. You’re welcome to join us if you want,” Chris old her.
“Thanks, but David and I are having a romantic night in tonight.” She winked at us. David was her husband.
“I got ya,” he said with a wink.
“A little somethin’, somethin’, huh?” I asked, winking at her as well.
She rolled her eyes and laughed, gently pushing me away. “Shut up!”
We all exchanged goodbyes with her, and then Kristi left.
“So these are the two cuties!” LaKisha walked over to Colin, and picked him up first. “Look at you! You’re a mini version of your daddy, Blake.”
“Actually, Blake is Dada, and I’m Daddy. I got the idea from Justin Timberlake. He calls his father Dad, and his stepfather daddy,” Chris explained. “Blake and I figure the twins can call Blake Dada until they are old enough to be embarrassed by it. Then they will call him Dad.”
“That’s cute,” LaKisha said. She kissed Colin’s cheek, and tickled his ribs.
Colin laughed hysterically.
It caused me to laugh too. “I’ve never heard him laugh before,” I told her. It was true. I was so adorable!
Chris grinned. “Me neither.” He picked up Bliss, and made a face. “Someone needs a changing.”
“You found her first. You change her,” I said, glad that Colin didn’t appear to smell.
Chris rolled his eyes, but brought her to her room to change her.
“Don’t be lazy, boy! Go and see if your husband needs any help,” LaKisha scolded.
I saluted her. “Yes, Ma’am,” I joked.
She smiled, and fluffed her hair. “It’s nice to be shown some respect for once.”
I laughed, and headed into the nursery. I smiled when I saw Chris blowing on Bliss’ bare stomach, which caused a loud farting noise. It also caused Bliss to laugh pretty hard.
Chris was smiling the biggest I’ve ever seen him smile. He blew on her stomach again, and she giggled even harder. “Daddy’s gonna get you. Daddy’s gonna get you,” he cooed. He blew on her stomach one more time, and she smiled, laughing gently this time.
“Well someone’s put in a good mood,” I said with a grin as I walked into the room.
He grinned at me. “I wanted to see if she could laugh like Colin, and she can, as you can see.” He took off her diaper, and put it in the diaper pail. Next, he began to gently wipe her.
“At least you can’t be peed on,” I said, still remembering how Colin had peed on me that first night.
He laughed. “Very true.” He tossed the last soiled wipe in the trash, and powdered her bottom. Then he slipped the new diaper on.
“I still think these onesies are corny—cute, but corny.” He snapped the bottom of her onesie over her diaper, and pulled her little pink pants back on. She was waring the girl onesie, as Colin was wearing the boy onesie.
I shrugged. “Well, Sligh bought them for the twins, so why shouldn’t they wear them? I figured now was the perfect time since LaKisha is visiting. This way, she’ll never wonder which is which.”
Chris rolled his eyes. “I don’t think she’d have a problem if they weren’t wearing these.”
I shrugged again.
“Well, you’re all changed and smelling good, beautiful!” Chris picked up Bliss and kissed her cheek.
I stroked Bliss’ almost bald head, and we carried her out of the room, back into the family room.
“Let me see Bliss now,” LaKisha said, handing me Colin, and then taking Bliss from Chris. She looked into Bliss’ eyes. “Wow, you’re breathtakingly beautiful. Nothing at all like your fathers.”
Chris and I both gasped.
“LaKisha! I’ve never heard you be so mean before,” Chris said with mock hurt. He put a hand over his heart.
“I have,” I said. “There was that time she threatened to kick Sanjaya’s butt to Kingdom Come when he told her that her jeans made her look fat. Not that I normally like to stick up for Sanjaya, but you did ask. Then again, he was stupid enough to say anything other than you look skinny.”
LaKisha glared at me. “Watch it, Sucka!”
I rolled my eyes, but grinned.
She smiled too. “I was joking. You two are gorgeous, just like your children.” She gave Colin’s cheek a loud kiss, and then carefully set him down to crawl.
I set Bliss down to crawl with her brother.
“So, have the twins said their first word yet?” LaKisha asked.
I shook my head. “I’ve been trying to get them to say Dada, but no luck so far.”
“And I’ve been trying to get them to say Daddy, but also no such luck,” Chris admitted.
LaKisha smiled. “Well, I’m sure they will talk when they’re ready. I remember when my baby first said momma, it was one of the happiest days of my life. You’ll have your moment soon enough.”
“I hope so,” I said, looking at the twins. I could hardly wait until I heard them speak.
“It’s gonna be Dada,” I said.
Chris shook his head. “Daddy.”
I smirked. “We’ll see about that.”

That night, we took LaKisha out to dinner. She wanted to feed the babies, so we let her. I was glad they were on baby food now. Blake and I still feed them a bottle before bed though. I wanted to get as much time out of bottle feeding the twins as I could. I loved rocking Bliss and feeding her her bottle. I loved how her big green eyes looked deep into mine. She always appeared so trusting. I loved her and Colin more and more with every day that passed.
After dinner, we went back to our place, and put the babies in their swings.
I then fixed us all some chips, dip, and sodas to have while we played cards. There was no door separating our kitchen from the family room—just an empty entranceway and a half divider off to the side—so we could see and hear the twins from the kitchen if they needed us.
“My daughter loves this game,” LaKisha told us as she shuffled the Phase Ten cards. “She’s always saying, ‘Mama, I want to play Phase Ten! Can we, please?’ I play with her of course. I never like to tell her no unless it’s for her own good.”
“You’re a good momma,” I said to her.
Blake nodded his agreement.
She grinned. “Thank you! You’re good dads.”
We played cards then, and LaKisha continued to talk about her daughter. LaKisha had a high opinion herself when it came to her skills as a mother. Several times she referred to herself as “mama”, but I thought it was sweet. I was glad to see she loved her daughter so much, and was such a good mother to her.
In the middle of the game, we took a break so that LaKisha could call her daughter and Blake and I could get the twins ready for bed.
Bliss was starting to cry. I picked her up, and stroked what little hair she had, rocking her gently, and trying to soothe her. She wouldn’t calm down.
“Here. Let me try,” Blake said. He took her from me.
“I don’t think that’s going to help, but be my guest,” I said.
Like magic, as soon as she was in his arms, against his chest, she stopped crying.
Blake smirked at me. “You were saying?”
I pouted, not caring how I looked like Blake at his most childish moment. “She loves you more than she loves me.” I thought back to how she had only stopped crying when he held her that first day she came into this world. There was another time at home that she had only stopped crying once Blake held her. It was all clicking now.
“Ah, baby, she doesn’t love me more than you. I don’t know why she stops crying when I hold her. She loves you though. She never smiles at me the way she smiles at you. She adores you.” Blake kissed my cheek to sooth me.
I kissed Colin, then set him down for a moment. He crawled over to one of his toys and began shaking it in the air. I smiled. Then, I kissed Blake, full on, reaching around Bliss to do so.
He licked his lips. “I love you. You take our daughter. She won’t cry now.”
I did as told, and sure enough, she snuggle into my chest, not crying at all. I kissed the top of her head. “Daddy loves you.”
We brought Bliss to bed first. We tucked her in, and gave her kisses. We turned her night light on and her regular lights off, then, after making sure the baby monitor was on, we quietly shut the door behind us, and headed for Colin’s room.
“It smells like he pooped,” Blake said, crinkling his nose.
I smirked. “It’s your turn to change.”
“All right,” he said. He didn’t even sigh or complain this time. Instead, he took his time cleaning Colin and giving him a clean diaper. He always made sure to put a cloth diaper over top of Colin’s front now, to prevent anymore peeing accidents. He powdered Colin’s bottom once he finished cleaning him, and finally put the clean diaper on. He now knew how to put the diaper on the right way.
As I had done for Bliss, he took Colin’s socks and pants off, but kept his onesie on.
He tucked him into bed, and as I watched, I couldn’t hep but think it was one of the most beautiful sights I’d ever seen—my husband bonding with our son.

Colin didn’t look like he was quite ready to go to sleep yet, so I decided to press one more time. “Say Dada.”
Colin looked up at me with his big brown eyes, but remained silent.
“Say Dada,” I repeated. Still nothing.
Chris watched with amusement. “He’s not ready to talk yet, baby. Trust me, I've tried to get him to talk, and he just won’t.”
I sighed, and looked at Colin again. “Come on, Colin. Say Dada. Please?”
Colin looked up at me, smiled, and then spoke. Only it wasn’t exactly the word I had in mind.
“Mama.”
My mouth dropped open. “Baby boy say what?”

I burst out laughing as Blake’s mouth dropped open. “See! I told you you were the girl in the relationship! Even Colin thinks so! He called you Momma!”
Blake rolled his eyes. “Isabella would be happy. Oh well. At least he said his first word. There is always Bliss.”
“She’s going to say daddy first,” I assured him.
“Anything’s better than momma,” Blake said.
We grinned at each other nonetheless.
“I wish we had that on tape. You have such a cute little voice, baby,” I said to Colin. I stroked his hair.
He smiled up at me, and I kissed one of his cheeks. “Good night, my love.”
Blake followed suit. “Goodnight, my baby.” he kissed Colin’s head.
“Goodnight, mommy,” I teased in a baby voice.
Blake laughed, and gently pushed me. “Shut up.”
I laughed too.
We tucked Colin in, gave him each a kiss more, and then turned his night light and monitor on, and his regular lights off.
“Sweet dreams,” I whispered to Colin as Blake and I left the room, shutting the door quietly behind us.
I stopped Blake in the hallway, and pulled him in for a deep kiss.
He licked his lips once the kiss was broken. “What was that for? Not that I’m complaining.”
I smiled. “For being the best soulmate and husband I could ever ask for.”
He smiled. “Right back at ya, baby.” He kissed me, and then took my hand. “I love you,” he said as we headed back to the living room.
I grinned. “I love you too, Mommy.”
“Okay, now it’s getting old.”
I smirked. “Sorry.”
