Frank’s POV.
After crying in the shower, I dried myself off and got dressed, thoughts still swirling around in my head like crazy. I still felt like a piece of shit, for falling for Gerard. I knew nothing could ever happen between us, but that was alright. I deserved to look and never touch.
When I walked back downstairs Mikey and Gerard were sitting in the living room, Mikey rubbing Gerard’s back and talking quietly to him. I cleared my throat to let them know I was there, and Mikey looked up and gave me a small smile. He motioned for me to walk over, so I did. He got up from where he was sitting next to Gerard and walked over to me, and as he reached me he leaned in towards me.
“Please don’t break his heart, and give him time, what he has to say is important.” He whispered and I scrunched my face up in confusion at his words, but I nodded anyway. Mikey patted my shoulder and threw Gerard a last look before disappearing up the stairs.
It was obvious Gerard wanted to talk to me about something, but I had no clue about what. I stood there awkwardly for a few seconds, since Gerard didn’t move or make a sound. Finally I sat down by his side on the couch, leaving some distance between us.
Narrator’s POV.
Gerard was trying very hard not to cry. He was biting the inside of his cheeks not to cry. He wanted to tell Frank without bawling like a child, but he didn’t know if he could make it. Gerard had seen movies about this, about how it was supposed to be, but Gerard knew movies weren’t real.
After 5 minutes of the both of them sitting in silence Frank decided to say something.
“Gerard, is there anything you want to say?” He asked slowly, unsure of if he should say anything at all or if he should just wait for Gerard to speak. Gerard took a few deep breaths, but realised he wouldn’t be able to stop his tears so he gave up.
He let out a quiet sob as he pushed some of his long hair behind his ears. He let his hands rest in his lap. He clenched them into tight fists. He released them. He bit his nails. He pushed some more hair from his face. He let his hands rest in his lap. He started fidgeting with a thread on his hoodie.
Gerard was nervous.
For Gerard, mostly everything was a challenge. Getting dressed was a challenge, because sometimes he couldn’t get his clothes on right away and that made him angry. Cleaning his room was a challenge, because sometimes his things fell over and that made him angry. Mostly everything was a challenge, because when things didn’t go the way they were supposed to, Gerard got angry.
He didn’t like that about himself, because it scared him. He didn’t want to do this wrong, telling Frank how he felt, because he didn’t want to get angry and scream. He was already very disappointed with the fact that he couldn’t stop the tears that were already pouring from his eyes.
And he was disappointed with the fact that he still hadn’t answered Frank’s question. Luckily enough Frank got the hint and waited for Gerard to take his time before he could start.
Once again Gerard’s hands pushed some hair out of his face, but now he had made his mind up. He had to say it, but he had to say it smoothly. Gerard had no idea how to do that, since Gerard had never had to say anything like it. But he decided to try.
“I’m in love with you.”
‘Oh no,’ Gerard thought, ‘I am such an idiot.’ He cursed himself. He was supposed to do it smoothly, slowly, just like he had seen in the movies. But as usual Gerard’s mouth didn’t listen to his brain.
As Gerard’s insides were fighting about what he had just let slip, Frank’s face went from one of confusion to one of shock. Of all the things Gerard could’ve said, Frank was not expecting that. And he was definitely not expecting Gerard to just plain out saying it like that. Frank had had a few people say that to him, but never before had someone just blurted it out like that.
Frank knew he should say something, but what? He was still so confused, he didn’t understand, his head seemed like it was about to explode.
“What?” He simply said, something that didn’t exactly make Gerard feel better. But again Gerard couldn’t stop the words that his mouth wanted to say.
“I like you as more then a friend, sorry.” Gerard mumbled, tears still leaking, and he knew there was no stopping them now. Finally Frank grasped the situation.
Gerard liked him as more then a friend. Gerard was in love with him.
It took Frank another 10 seconds to let it sink in properly.
“Please don’t be sorry.” Frank whimpered as he started crying as well.
When Gerard saw Frank’s tears he started crying louder, because he thought for sure he had ruined their friendship. Gerard buried his face in his hands and wept, silently cursing himself for being born.
Frank scooted a bit closer to Gerard and leaned his head on Gerard’s shoulder slowly.
“Please don’t be sorry, and don’t cry, because I can’t stop crying if you’re crying.” Frank sobbed and wrapped his arms around the older boy’s shoulders.
“I can’t stop.” Gerard choked out, fighting very hard to make his voice loud enough to be heard.
“I like you too Gerard, as much more then a friend!” Frank said between sobs as he buried his face in the crook of Gerard’s neck. At his words Gerard stopped crying for a few seconds and lowered his hands from his face and stared at Frank.
“What?” He asked, blinking rapidly to try and comprehend what was happening. Frank lifted his face from Gerard’s neck and stared Gerard straight in his eyes.
“I’m in love with you too Gerard.”
They embraced each other, both boys still crying. They clung to each other like there was no tomorrow, the both of them still sobbing loudly.
For the first time in Gerard’s life, he had heard someone say “I’m in love with you.” to him, and he couldn’t think. He couldn’t understand, he couldn’t do anything but hold Frank as close as possible. Gerard had always thought he’d be alone, never would anyone like him for who he was.
But there he sat, in the arms of a friend, a friend who did like him just the way he was. With Asbergers, with mood swings, and with childish behaviour. It was too good to be true, and Gerard had never been happier.
Never before had Frank felt the way he did, never before had anyone meant as much as Gerard did. None of Frank’s old boyfriends could ever compare to Gerard, because Gerard was precisely what Frank needed. In every way.
