'Soooooo then, why do you all look so tense? We're landing soon and you gotta be happy to get off this plane!' Chirped Joey from his seat between Paul and Jen, looking around at the other members of Hellbound.
'No one's told him about Japan then' said Jade from her seat in the aisle behind.
‘Tell me what? Is it going to be like on The Simpson's when Godzilla grabs the plane? Is it? Is he real? Can we see him? Tell me!' Joked Joey, carrying on like a hyperactive 5 year old.
'Shut up and I'll tell you!' exclaimed Jo, before explaining. 'Well here it is; our biggest fan base is in Japan, and they tend to get a little..... Excited shall we say, when we tour' said Jo.
'So excited we have to travel under armed guard. People have threatened to kidnap us before and some of them just get too close for comfort, grabbing you and trying to literally take a piece of you. I lost five bracelets and two clumps of hair before they figured out we might need security' said Jess, wincing at the memory of almost being hauled past rescue into a crowd of crazed fans.
'No way!' Paul and Joey remarked at the exact same time.
'Way!' the girls all replied together laughing. When they landed and began to take the walk from the plane to the gate the noise from inside the airport got louder, and louder and louder. At the end of the walkway from the plane four police men with guns dressed in black were waiting for them.
'Hiro, nice to see again mate' said Jade, giving one of the police a little hug. He had looked after them the last time they visited Japan. Upon sight of her the few hundred fans packed into the airport screamed their heads off.
'Great to be working with you again Jade, follow me, you know the drill' replied Hiro in his crystal clear perfect English, smiling and taking the lead as he walked into a large clear plastic tunnel that lead them to the airports main floor and exit. Either side of the space age designed tunnel were literally hundreds of Hellbound fans, screaming at the tops of their voices as the girls came into view, banging on the tunnel sides and taking pictures of their idols. The noise was deafening, it was like something from The Beatles days.
'Do you reckon we'll get this much fuss one day?' Corey asked Jim as they emerged from the walkway into the tunnel.
'Looks like we already might have' said Jim, pointing to a group of twentysomething girls all wearing Slipknot t shirts. They made the guys' day by lifting their shirts when they walked past. Let's just say these particular young ladies were no fans of bras.
'Hahahaha wow!' said Jim and Corey at the same time, laughing and waving at the girls. Their arrival in Japan was memorable if nothing else. As they neared the end of the tunnel, where only barriers and security guards would keep the fans at bay Jade suddenly started to feel very nervous, and slowed her pace right down at the screaming from the fans grew so loud she could hardly hear herself think, but knew instantly she was starting to panic. She didn’t like large crowds one bit. Just as she was hovering and not wanting to go forward she felt an arm hook around her waist and turned to see Jim by her side.
‘No one’s going to hurt you while there are four men with guns flanking you, or me at your side for that matter’ he said, gently pushing her forward. Jade gave him a small smile and continued to walk, feeling a little more secure for having an arm around her at that time. She leaned in to his embrace and adjusted her aviator sunglasses over her eyes as they walked into the main airport building, returning the gesture and putting her arm around him, tucking her thumb into one of the belt hoops of his black jeans.
‘And he says she ain’t his girlfriend’ remarked Joey as he and Shaun walked behind them.
‘I just hope for all our sakes she really isn’t’ muttered Shaun as he scratched his beard.
‘Why do you have such a big problem with her dude? Have you actually even sat down and just talked to the girl? She’s lovely’ said Joey with a shrug. He couldn’t figure out for the life of him why Shaun was so ‘anti Jade’.
‘I won’t talk about this here Joey’ was all Shaun said in way of reply as he held up his hand, striding on ahead to catch up with Mick. Joey rolled his eyes and sighed, he hated it when people didn’t get on. Especially when there was no reason for it too. He wasn’t the only one to wonder why Shaun didn’t like Jade so much, he was friendly enough with all the other girls so why not her too? It was something that had been loosely bothering the lady herself too, who even though always liked to make new friends wasn’t too fussed about making enemies; except when she couldn’t see reason for it.
The snide comments here and there and general frosty atmosphere around him whenever she was near had been just enough for her to ignore up until they had arrived in Japan, but after storming out of an interview with a woman who wouldn’t know the word ‘respect’ if it hit her in the face Jade found out Shaun could be a whole lot worse. Coming into the huge single dressing room at the back of that nights shows venue and finding him alone in the corner quietly reading Jade could feel the temperature in the room drop a few degrees. That frosty atmosphere was back.
‘Who the fuck does she think she is exactly? Talking to me like I’m some kind of idiot slut groupie’ she mumbled to herself under her breath, not thinking Shaun could hear her.
‘Maybe if you didn’t act like one, they wouldn’t speak to you like one’ he said, his eyes not leaving the pages of his book.
‘What did you just say?’ she snapped, whirling round on one foot and fixing him with an icy glare that should have been trademarked to her.
‘You heard me Jade’ he replied, this time looking at her for long enough to convey the feeling of distaste through his facial expression.
‘So sleeping with just one guy, for the last six months makes me a slutty groupie does it Shaun? Really? Because if I was that much of a whore, why would I have settled with one when I could have made a play for all fucking nine of you?’ said Jade acridly. On that one he had to admit he was stumped, so changed tactics.
‘It’s not just that, you have a vile attitude that I think you are displaying quite nicely right now’ replied Shaun, this time shutting his book completely and looking her square in the eye. Jade knew when someone was trying to make her bite, she was a smart girl so played it cool.
‘Okay Shaun, so what the hell has that got to do with anything? You appear to be the kind of man who likes to answer a question with another statement entirely’ said Jade.
‘If you think that then I’d suggest you are judging me unfairly, since you don’t know me for shit’ spat Shaun. Jade nodded, and then took a breath.
‘Just like you don’t know shit about me. You haven’t even so much as even wanted to take the time to sit down and get to know me, so what you are judging me on I sure as hell don’t know, but it works both ways doesn’t it?’ she replied, softening her tone. He really couldn’t argue with that. It appeared his band mates were right; she was very intelligent.
‘Sit’ he said plainly, toeing a chair in her direction and opening himself a coke, offering her one which she accepted gratefully. His manner was still belligerent, but the atmosphere certainly less icy than it had been before.
‘So, my first question is........... Where does all the attitude come from? Why do you have to make yourself so hard to work with? C’mon Jade I know we have only just started out in this game but if you keep acting like a bitch in interviews people are going to get the same impression I did. And if that’s untrue to your character then it’s unfair that people should see you that way, but you give them very little to make them think of you otherwise’ said Shaun. Jade took a big gulp of her coke and burped behind her hand, excusing herself before answering.
‘Shaun, you are right when you say you have only started out, which means you don’t know the way the media turn things around, misquote you, write general shit because of something they said that pissed you off. Pretty soon you will though, and when it happens take yourself out of your shoes and imagine for one second you are a 25 year old girl. Then maybe you will know where the attitude comes from. Even though we as a band are all credible and respected musicians, in a lot of people eyes, including those of the press, we are just women.
And because we are just women they think it’s that much easier to sit and pick us apart, nose into who we may or may not be dating, ask us much more below the belt questions than they would a guy. Take the interview Jo and Mick did together recently. He got all the technical questions and she got all the bullshit ones, and by Mick’s own admission she is much more of an accomplished guitarist than he is. Now do you understand where I’m coming from? I ain’t a monster Shaun, just a woman who is tired of people throwing her gender in her face every five damn minutes’ said Jade, taking a big breath at the end of her mammoth explanation. Shaun sat and digested her comments for a few moments before replying.
‘Well’ he started, nodding and scratching his chin. ‘It would seem that I was wrong, something I can admit to. You know, the way you just put it, I didn’t consider any of that for one second. I thought your temper was something you used in way of getting more publicity for yourself’ he said.
‘My music does that just nicely’ she replied, a small smile curling her lips. He surprised her by smiling back.
‘Jade, I apologise for the way I have acted towards you. From what you just said you do seem like the kind of person who I should credit rather than pour scorn on. So, tell me more about what makes you tick then. I think it’s only fair I get to know you a little better; then judge you’ said Shaun with a small rumble of laughter. So he and Jade sat for an hour and talked, and surprisingly found they both had a lot in common. Strong family values, abundant self confidence and the limitless ambition to achieve the very best they could were just three of them.
‘Well I can’t deny I’ve enjoyed this talk but still, there is something about you that concerns me’ said Shaun, flicking at the ring pull on his can of coke.
‘Jim. Yeah I know’ she replied. ‘Listen Shaun, we talked about it and neither of us wants a relationship, what we have is a perfect set up for the both of us and just because other people wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. Judging me by who I take to bed is something else I won’t tolerate from anyone, no matter how much I know deep down you are looking out for your friend. But he does know what he’s doing, trust his intuition’ replied Jade as she tied her hair up in a high ponytail.
‘Just be careful, set ups like this that have all the simplicity in the world to begin with can often get messy. And I ain’t just saying it for him; I’d hate to see either of you ending up sour from it’ said Shaun as he rose from his seat, patted her on the shoulder as he paused by her side, then left the room only to duck back in again moments later.
‘Oh and Jade?’ he said.
‘Yeah’ she replied, turning to face him in her seat.
‘It was good to talk to you. I’ll look forward to a next time too’ he said, smiling and leaving. What he had said had ironed out a problem, and their little battle had now had the white flag raised on it. But what he had said in turn had suddenly made her think ‘what if one of us does end up hurt?’ It was something she really hadn’t considered since she didn’t have any romantic feelings towards Jim, only sexual ones. But now she worried that maybe it wasn’t her own feelings she should be worrying about. Getting up out of her seat and walking towards a line of mirrors around the dressing room Jade removed the scarf from her severely bitten and bruised neck and looked at herself in the reflection. She then pulled up her top and looked at the scratches down her side inflicted by him, then at the black bruise atop her left breast, also left by him.
‘If he really cared, he wouldn’t do that to you. Like he said, you’re just his toy, and that’s all he is to you too’ she thought to herself before covering the various marks and heading out of the room in search of her band.
