Carrie smiled as the door opened to reveal Kelly's bare back as she pulled on a shirt while walking back to her room, a sight Carrie had finally become accustomed to after picking her up for school for a good couple of weeks.
Carrie stopped in the kitchen on the way to the back to pour a glass of orange juice to bring to the Texan.
Kelly smiled as Carrie walked in her room, "Thank you."
Carrie shrugged as she handed her the drink, "Another long night?"
"Ugh," she sighed. "Freaking stood next to monkey crap all day yesterday until like ten. Why does a zoo stay open until ten? Especially on a school night?"
"Why would you stand next to monkey poo all day?"
"That's where I'm stationed."
"You work at the zoo too?"
"Yep, and I don't recommend it if you're looking for a job."
"Thanks for the warning," Carrie laughed, watching as Kelly rushed to the bathroom to brush her teeth. Unfortunately the small puppy had been claimed a few days earlier, so now Carrie had no one to play with while the Texan got ready.
"So there's a show this weekend," Kelly commented, returning to the room.
Carrie covered her eyes as was part of the routine they had settled in while Kelly got dressed, "A show?"
"Yea, the Toadies. You heard of them?"
"Um, no, are they a band or something?"
Carrie felt Kelly's hand on her arm, pulling her hand away from her eyes so she could look at her as if she were crazy while she tugged down the t-shirt she had slipped on.
"I take that as a yes," Carrie smiled.
"Wow, you are so in for a treat," Kelly grinned, placing Carrie's hand back over her eyes as she changed into a pair of jeans.

"Kelly," Stacey smiled, catching up with her in the hall.
"Hey," Kelly nodded.
"So, you working this weekend?"
"Yep."
"Even Saturday night?"
"No, actually, for once I have off," she replied, putting her books in her locker.
"Good, because we're having this amazing party--"
"Sorry, can't," Kelly cut it. "I already made plans. Maybe next time?" she offered, starting to walk away, but Stacey was right beside her.
"What about the new girl?"
"Carrie," Kelly reminded. "How long do you have to be here before you aren't new anymore?"
"Yea, her. You know if she has any plans this weekend?"
"Um, you should ask her yourself, but yea, she's coming with us."
"Oh," Stacey frowned.
Kelly sighed, knowing she would regret asking, "What?"
"Nothing, it's just that, well, Kelly, you know I think you're great."
Kelly gave her a sarcastic look. The girl didn't think she was great; it was merely the fact that Kelly was probably the only person to stand up to her that had her trying so hard.
"But some of the people you hang out with," she shook her head. "I just don't understand it."
Kelly's eyes narrowed as she stopped in the middle of the hall, "It's not for you to understand."
Stacey put up her hands in surrender, "Ok, what I'm saying is, you could easily be the most popular girl in this school if you would only hang out with the right people, you know?"
"Ever think that I don't care about being the most popular girl in the school?" Kelly asked. "I mean seriously, if that was my life's goal, then God save me, please."
Stacey looked at her as if she were crazy.
Kelly's eyes turned up to the sky as she shook her head in defeat. The girl would never understand.
"You know, that's fine for you. The whole outsider, wrong side of the tracks thing totally works for you," Stacey said. "But not for a girl like Carrie. Under the right supervision, she has the potential to be a big force at this school, and don't you think it's a little inconsiderate of you to be holding her back."
"Holding her back from what?"
"From greatness."
"Since when is whether or not your liked by a bunch of airheads that in ten years won't be anything but a bunch of trailer housewives a measure of greatness?"
Stacey's voice hardened, "Look, I know you think you're all high and mighty and above me and everything, but I could ruin you so fast."
Kelly raised an eyebrow. Could she even hear herself?
"Why is it so important that Carrie hangs out with y'all anyway?" Kelly asked curiously.
"I just want what's best for the girl."
"Two minutes ago you couldn't even remember her name."
Stacey forced out a laugh.
Kelly shook her head, "I'm not stopping Carrie from hanging out with y'all. She's a big girl. She can pick her own friends."
"Exactly," a soft but sure voice said from behind her.
Kelly turned to find the slightly taller girl standing there.
"And you know," Carrie smiled, linking her arm through Kelly's. "I'm pretty dang happy with my choice."
Kelly smiled, catching her eye before turning back to Stacey, sticking her tongue out.
"Whatever," Stacey muttered, turning and walking away.
Carrie laughed as she led the two of them to her locker, "What is that girl's problem? I feel like this is West Side Story or something."
"I know, I think we're all gonna meet out back after school and have a rumble," Kelly replied, making her laugh even more.
"What?" Carrie asked, feeling the Texan's eyes on her as she traded her books from her morning classes for the ones for her afternoon classes.
"Nothing," she shook her head. "I'm just trying to figure out why she's after you like this."
Carrie cocked an eyebrow.
"I mean, apart from the obvious," Kelly said, motioning to the way she looked.
Carrie blushed.
"And I'm not saying you're like some complete asshole either. It's quite the opposite, but she doesn't know that," Kelly thought aloud. "But even if she did, it still makes no sense, because usually her type of friend is someone who bows down to her every move but is a complete bitch to everybody else. I just don't get it," she shrugged.
"It's no big deal," Carrie assured her as they started walking down the hall.
"It's just that I've never seen her this adamant about someone."
"You mean, besides you?"
Kelly shook her head, "She doesn't want me as one of her hoe posse. She just wants to prove that she can control me like she does all of her little minions."

"Is she still looking over here?" Kelly asked, taking a bite out of her hamburger.
Ashley looked past her from the other side of the table in the cafeteria to where Stacey and her friends were seated, "Laser beams in your back."
Kelly rolled her eyes.
"I need more ketchup," Carrie frowned, eyeing her hamburger.
Kelly laughed, tossing her the small packet of ketchup she hadn't used.
"Maybe she has a girl crush on her," Mary smirked, nodding towards Carrie.
Carrie choked on her burger, "Huh?"
"Or maybe she's jealous cause she's moving in on her other girl crush," Ashley replied, nodding towards Kelly.
"I'm straight," Carrie said quickly.
Kelly laughed, "We know, hun. A girl crush doesn't mean anything. It's perfectly innocent."
"Other than the fact that she's obsessed with Kelly," Ashley smiled, moving out the way as Kelly threw a fry at her.
Lyndsey eyed Kelly and Carrie carefully before looking over at Stacey, "You know, maybe she's scared."
"Not this again," Kelly groaned.
"Go on," Mary urged.
"Well, we all know that she's afraid that Kelly will one day wake up and take over the school, right?"
"Seriously?" Kelly asked. "Must we encourage her?"
"It's funny," Ashley replied. "She's crazy."
"Yea, but the one thing keeping her sane is what?" Lyndsey asked.
"The fact that Kelly hangs out with us," Mary smiled.
"Exactly."
"Two points," Mary cheered as Ashley gave her a high-five.
"So, let's say I'm gonna humor y'all," Kelly sighed. "Why would that keep her sane?"
"Because she thinks as long as you're hanging out with them, then you don't have much of a chance," Carrie replied thoughtfully, but quickly covered her mouth. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for that to come out like it sounded. It's just from the way she was talking earlier--"
But Ashley held up a hand to stop her, "It's ok. You're totally right. And stop being so afraid to speak up child."
Carrie smiled shyly, and Kelly elbowed her playfully, making her giggle softly.
"But then you throw her into the mix," Lyndsey said, motioning to Carrie. "I mean, she's like the all-american cheerleading homecoming queen--"
"I am not a cheerleader," Carrie interrupted.
"No, but you look like it."
"She does not," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"The ribbons?" Mary pointed out.
"True," Kelly nodded.
"So you think that with Carrie hanging out with Kelly, Stacey's afraid that she really will take over," Ashley smiled.
"Can y'all hear yourselves?" Kelly asked, taking a sip of her chocolate milk. "This is ridiculous."
"We don't think this," Mary reminded. "They do."
