Die paused long enough to check the departure board. There was a US flight leaving soon. Cursing, he hurried down the terminal, looking for the gate. The airport was busy, and he was getting frustrated when he saw her. She was sitting alone in a row, her bags at her feet, her head bowed. About to shout to her he saw that Toshiya was across the room, and didn’t want his brother’s attention by caught by calling out to her. Just as he made that decision he watched Toshiya turn, and halt.
“Fuck,” he hissed low, and started to walk forward. He had to get to her before Toshiya. Screw it! His brother had already seen her. “Suji!” he shouted as he rushed forward.
……………
Toshiya had seen four girls he’d thought to be Suji-chan, but when he touched their shoulders and they looked at him he apologized with much bowing and continued his search. He’d tried calling her again, but she wasn’t answering. He’d even tried calling Saika, but Kyo had answered that phone. So, the elder brothers were on their way, with a ticked off Saika in the backseat cursing at them. He had to find Suji before they got there. He had to find her before Die did. He had to talk to her, to explain everything. She had to understand why he’d done what he had.
About ready to stand there and start screaming her name until they a) kicked him out or b) she ran to him to shut him up before they kicked him out he turned and saw her. Eyes on her only he hadn’t known how close Die was to finding her until he heard his brother shout to her. With a curse he started to run forward.
…………………
“I can’t believe you and I share DNA,” Saika growled to her twin who sat beside her in the backseat. Arms crossed tightly over her chest she wouldn’t look at any of them. “You betrayed me.”
“I can’t betray you for something I didn’t even know,” he impatiently retorted. “You never confided in me.”
“Because you’d tell the others,” she shot at him. “You’re supposed to be my twin, but you side with the guys. We shared an egg, and you abandon me when I need you most.”
Shinya rolled his eyes, and snorted.
“Do you really want little Suji-chan to leave like this?” Kaoru asked, glancing into the rearview mirror at her reflection.
“A better question would be if you’d like to live with Die after she runs out on him,” Kyo amended.
“Ooh, good one,” Kaoru nodded.
Saika sat forward. “The two of you amaze me.”
“Why, thank you,” Kyo grinned, knowing it would only annoy her more.
“It wasn’t a compliment,” she growled.
“Saika, things are more screwed up than you think so the whole Toru thing will wait until later,” Kaoru told her.
“You’re not going anywhere near him,” she snarled. “This time I really mean it! Or so help me, Kami-sama…”
“Look…” Kyo started to tell her.
“No, you look!” Saika interrupted. “I’m fed up with all of you interfering in my personal life. How the hell am I ever supposed to get married and have kids with the five of you scaring off every man I look at?”
“You’re our baby sister, we’re supposed to scare them all off, don’t you know?” Kyo rolled his eyes.
“Tell you what. Bring him home,” Kaoru suddenly interrupted before her fist made contact with the side of Kyo’s head.
Shinya was startled enough to blurt out, “What?”
“Bring him home to meet the family,” Kaoru repeated. “If you’re extremely serious about this guy then let us meet him.”
“No scare tactics?” she asked, suspicious of this turn of events.
“Can’t promise that,” Kyo honestly told her. “You have to understand that we care for you, and as womanizing bastards ourselves we recognize it in others and try to protect you from that. You should be honored we spent so many years studying womanizing so we could make sure you never suffer from it.”
Saika rolled her eyes, sitting back and crossing her arms over her chest again. “Please.” After a moment she sighed heavily. “Why are we rushing to find Suji before Die? So they fight over the whole Toshiya thing, so what? It’s been going on forever like that. Why is this time so different?”
“She wasn’t there,” Shinya reminded the other two in a soft voice.
“Wasn’t where? What’s going on?” she asked as her interest was piqued by that comment.
“Toshiya loves her,” Kaoru blurted.
Saika laughed, but no one else was so she stopped, frowning. “No, he doesn’t. Die even said so. And he spent years avoiding her so how can that be…”
“He did it because he knew Die loved her. He did it for Die. He was the third kisser that night,” Kyo told her. “Toshiya and Die went at it this morning. They’re both looking for her. If Die finds her he wants to take her away and never come back. If Toshiya finds her he’s going to finally declare himself. Now do you get how screwed this is?”
Jaw hanging slack she sat speechless for a moment, blinking in shock. Finally she looked at Shinya. “Wait, I thought you loved her too?”
“As family,” he softly told her. “It’s why we never kept our pact. I think she knows it too. I realized it this morning when all hell broke loose and I wasn’t jealous.”
Saika nodded. “That’s probably the only thing in this whole mess that makes sense.”
“No shit,” Kaoru sighed.
Kyo hung up the cell with a curse. “She’s still not answering even calls from Saika’s cell.”
“That’s cuz when she did it wasn’t me, but Totchi.” She frowned. “Now it makes sense the way he acted when he wanted to know where she is.” A gasp suddenly tore out of her. “Oh man, this is going to destroy her! All these years she loved him, and then thought he couldn’t stand her…”
“He realized he loved her years after he already knew Die did so in his mind it was too late,” Shinya shook his head. “That takes guts. Giving up the girl you love for your brother? If Die did win her love he’d have to spend forever watching them together. I don’t think I could do that.”
“Die wouldn’t really take her away forever, would he?” Saika asked, frowning over that thought. “I mean, our family is really close.”
“I don’t know,” Kaoru shook his head. “I think he would because for years he knew he had to fight her love for Totchi, and that was when he thought Totchi didn’t love her back. Now he knows different it’s a whole new story. Even if she chose him he’d always wonder, when she’s around him, and it could destroy what they have.”
“But even if he took her away he’d have to wonder if she really did love him.” Shinya was scowling as he stared out the window beside him. “If she regretted it or…”
“Oh man,” Saika blinked, shocked. “Maybe… Maybe Suji never should have come back.” Inside she felt horrible for saying it. “How did things get so screwed up? Why couldn’t it have just been like it used to?”
No one replied. No one had answers.
…………………………
The shout startled me. I looked around, confused. That had sounded like… “Die!” I gasped, seeing him hurriedly weave through crowds. How the hell had he found me? What the hell was I going to say to him when he reached me? I knew I couldn’t run and hide. I had my luggage with me. It would take minutes just trying to gather it all up, and running with all of it was out of the question. He’d catch me in seconds so why even try?
Rising slowly, I braced myself for the confrontation. Okay, whatever happened I had to be strong. I couldn’t let him sway me. It would be unfair to him. I realized that when I lay beside Toshiya who had simply held me all night to keep the nightmares away. He hadn’t had to do it, but he did. And it had made me remember the love I felt for him.
What I didn’t expect was someone grabbing my arm from my other side. Startled I half-turned. “Toshiya-san!” I gasped, stunned. What the hell was he doing here? How had he known to… He must have forced Saika to tell him after tricking me with her cell phone.
“Suji-chan, I…”
“Don’t listen to him!” Die shouted. He put on a burst of speed and finally reached up, grabbing my other arm in his hand.
Toshiya glared at him. “Back off, Daisuke.”
“No, you back off,” Die growled, using his other hand to shove his brother away. That made Toshiya pull me with him, and I hissed when both men tightened their holds on my arms. “You’re hurting her so let go,” he snapped.
“Why don’t you just screw off,” Toshiya snapped back, stepping forward threateningly.
Die stepped forward as well, both of them now nearly toe to toe, and scowling dangerously at each other. I tried to back away, but neither of them was letting go so I couldn’t get far. This had to be because Die had found out that Toshiya had stayed at my place, and I’d slept with him last night. It had to be. Die had been so worried about me last night. All the more reason I couldn’t go on hurting him like this. It wasn’t fair to him. And I’d been an idiot to think I could get over my feelings for Toshiya so easily. Even despite the strong attraction I had for Die.
“Please, let me go,” I softly told them. “You’re both hurting me!” I cried, hoping that would work, though it wasn’t far from the truth. Neither wanted to let go, and I was afraid they were going to start yanking me back and forth in a tug-o’-war that I wanted no part of. It took another moment where they intensely glowered at each other and mumbled accusations, but I was let go.
The intercom crackled, and the flight to America announced. Both men stiffened. “Suji…” Die was about to reach for my arm again, but pulled his hand back. “Don’t go. You know you feel something for me. Stop denying it.”
“You’re grasping at straws,” Toshiya cut in. “Suji-chan, you have to listen to me…”
Die pushed forward so I had to back up a step and let him get between Toshiya and me or get knocked back. “He’s been avoiding you for years so why listen to him now. Suji, marry me. We can buy a nice little house somewhere and have a family of our own!”
My jaw dropped, and I stared up at him. Marry him! Was he serious? He’d been talking about how he loved me and was committed to me, but… marry him! Before I could even ponder that further, Toshiya shoved Die away and caught me by the shoulders. “Look at me!” he urgently commanded. When I did, out of reflex, he stared into my eyes. “Suji, I…”
“Suji-chan! There you are!”
Still stunned by Toshiya’s odd behavior, I blinked in confusion as I saw the others nearing in a rush. Kaoru calmly extricated me from his younger brothers, and pulled me back with him and Kyo. “Suji-chan, you’re not really going to run away and leave us to put up with those two baka, are you?” Kyo asked with a smile.
Even more confused now I just stared at him. “What?”
Final call for the flight. Everyone stared at me. I sighed. “I never bought the ticket,” I whispered. I hadn’t. I was still debating about it when all this confusion had started.
Saika came forward and hugged me tight. “It’s okay. Let’s go home.”
“No,” Die hurriedly interrupted. “Suji and I are…”
“Goddamn it, I deserve the chance of talking to her!” Toshiya snarled, all patience lost, and startling me so bad that all I could do was stare at him, speechless. What was up with him?
“No!” shouted Die in anger, reaching for me.
Kaoru and Kyo got between him and me. “Totchi’s right,” Kyo announced.
“Like fuck he is!” the redhead snarled. “He gave up all rights to…”
Kaoru sighed in frustration. “Don’t make me kick your ass and drag you out of here unconscious.”
Shinya stepped forward, taking some of my luggage. “How ‘bout we do this somewhere else before we all get thrown out by security?”
“Good idea,” Kyo nodded. “You guys get the luggage.” They each gently took one of my arms in their hands and led me through the airport.
“Kaoru-san? Kyo-san? What’s going on?” It was all I could ask. I was feeling so lost and defeated that I had no idea what to think or say or do. My mind was whirring with thoughts and images, and I felt almost dizzy because of it. I was actually thankful they were guiding me out because right now I didn’t think I could walk on my own.
