AN: Ero, I agree with you about fathers. I went to high school with a boy who said about his children; "They're my sperm, but they're not my kids." I wanted to punch him in the face. Haha, I'd wear cologne like that just because bookstores make me happy. When I got shopping, I usually buy books. This has been commented on by my friends at the mall. "We don't want to go in the bookstore, Taima." "Okay, you can go somewhere else. You know where to find me." "...Dammit. Don't you need clothes?" "Books first!" I'm actually kinda scared to take my typewriter to school with me because I'm afraid people will think I'm being a real asshole and showing off that I'm a writer. I'm not, I just like the clack-y sound the keys make! I have NOT found Breakfast at Tiffany's yet. :( I think I might just have one of my friends rent it for me so I can actually watch it. (Also, you're not a stalker, and I will keep that in mind for when the agent comes up again!) Thanks to Pluska for the review!
I shivered quietly in the front seat. Wordlessly, Johnny reached over and turned on the heater. I didn’t bother to say thank you. We started off driving.
“How long have you played guitar?”
“Couple years. Since high school.” I shrugged. “I don’t really want to be a nanny or a dog walker. I want to be a musician. It’s hard though, and my room mate was tired of paying full rent, so it was either walk dogs or, you know, live in a cardboard box.”
“I hear those are drafty this time of year.” Johnny smiled at me as we pulled up to a red light. I gave him a small one in return. The silence was going to crush me if I didn’t find a way to break it.
“Johnny, what are you going to do about the kids? You can’t keep lying to them.” I knew I shouldn’t have brought it up, but I couldn’t keep sitting there and not saying anything. It was really bugging me. Johnny ran his hand through his hair.
“I don’t know, Charity.”
“You could try telling them the truth.” I suggested with a raised eyebrow. This wasn’t exactly rocket science or anything.
“It’s too late for that. They’re going to know that I lied to them. And then they’ll hate me forever.” He looked completely heartbroken at the thought. Okay, now I couldn’t help but feel just a little bit sorry for him. I wasn’t a parent, but I didn’t think I’d be able to stand it if my kid’s hated me.
“They love you, Johnny. You’re one of the best father’s that I’ve ever seen. They aren’t going to hate you forever, or even close to forever.”
“You really think that?” he sounded hopeful.
“I know that.” I reached over and took his free hand and squeezed it. “Please believe me.”
“Come home with me tonight, Charity.” He said suddenly. I dropped his hand and stared at him.
**
Johnny regretted the words the moment they came out of his mouth. He didn’t mean them the way they sounded, didn’t want her to think he was trying to pick her up.
Wait, was he? Was he trying to pick the nanny up? He had to admit that he’d been so lonely lately, and she was the first woman who didn’t shriek as soon as she saw him besides Lily-Rose.
“I… I don’t know if that’s such a good idea, Johnny.” She said slowly.
“It’s a great idea! Come on, Charity, please? Please come home with me, just for tonight?”
“Okay.” Charity swallowed. “Just for tonight though. And no funny business. I mean it.” She pointed a stern finger at him.
Well, he was pretty sure he knew what she meant when she said ‘funny business’. That didn’t mean he couldn’t get up to some other shenanigans. He steered them towards his house.
“Wait in the car while I pay the baby sitter.”
“Already trying to replace me, I see.” She joked. He just went in the house and paid the girl who had been asleep on his couch. Sleepily, she wandered out of his house and down to the cab waiting at the end of the driveway.
“What are you doing?” Johnny asked. Charity had ducked down below the dashboard of the car when the young woman walked by.
“Hiding?”
“From what?”
“The zombies. You never know when they might attack!” she sat up and straightened her hair.
“Well, the window was left down. I don’t know how much help hiding would be. Come on.” He opened her door and helped her out onto the ground.
“My guitar.” She turned around as he laced their fingers together.
“It’s all right. You won’t need it.” He promised. They crept into the house together. Johnny sat her on the couch, where she sat primly as he scuttled off to get them a drink.
“I don’t ever drink alcohol, Johnny.” Charity said when he came back with two wine glasses.
“Well, maybe you should start.” He wriggled it at her. With a sigh of defeat, the girl took it and sipped. Johnny sat next to her. Neither one of them spoke for a few moments.
“I don’t understand why you’re interested in me. You could have any woman in the world you want.”
“I know that.” Johnny reached over and took her glass. He put them both on the coffee table and stretched out on the couch. Charity made to get up, but he stopped her by putting his feet in her lap.
He gestured for him to lay with him. She hesitated for just a second before stretching out on top of him. Johnny wrapped his arms around her waist. He was instantly impressed with how comfortable the situation was.
“I really shouldn’t be here doing this.” She sounded guilty.
“I shouldn’t have put the idea into your head.” Johnny replied. Her head was resting in the crook of his neck. He turned his head and buried his face in her hair. She smelled like coffee beans of the shop she had been playing at, and something sharp and sweet that Johnny loved. One hand reached up and cupped the back of her hand, the tips of his fingers lightly massaging her scalp.
“You hardly even know me.” Her voice was getting slowly, deeper. Charity sounded significantly less guilty that time.
“I know everything about you I need to.” Johnny was trying to be as soothing and gentle as he could. He kissed the side of her head. She burrowed a little deeper into him, and the silence fell again. He let one hand rub a circle in the middle of her back, and could feel her breathing start to go deep and steady.
She was sound asleep against him. Their hearts were beating in sync, and Johnny felt his eyes start to droop shut. Charity stirred and turned her head, her lips brushing against his neck in her sleep. He sighed.
This was going to be weird in the morning.
