She hadn't spoken to the brunette in a week, not that she had been counting or anything; but despite the fact that they had two classes together, one of which they say next to each other and were lab partners in they hadn't spoken since that first day of school. Carrie was beginning to think she'd offended the Texan when she questioned her about how she'd been acting towards her that day when she had been kind to her days before school had started. In Carrie's defense, she had reasoned that since the shorter girl had been quiet and a bit defensive toward her, she had every right to ask Kelly if she had done something to upset her. Of course she was also certain that it didn't help her case any by mentioning the rumors she'd been fed about her fellow classmate at lunch that day. But now here she was at the video store, Kelly unaware of her presence. Carrie shyly observed the Texan from behind a rack of movies while the brunette stared intently at a magazine from behind the front counter.
"You find anything yet, Care?" Carrie snapped out of her thoughts and turned quickly to face her father, sending the rack of videos toppling over behind her. If Kelly hadn't noticed her before she definitely had now. Oh god, major embarrassment. Not only am I completely incapable of walking on my own two feet, I'm here on a Friday night with my Father. Lame.
"Need help finding anything?" When Carrie turned to face the owner of the voice chiming in from behind her she was met by one grinning Texas native who was definitely fighting the urge to laugh at her.
Carrie could feel her cheeks burning with embarrassment. "Um...no. We...I'm sorry. I'll clean this up." She motioned to her mess with her hands.
A small chuckle escaped Kelly's mouth. "Yeah, quite a little mess you've made here. You're super coordinated," She teased, "How exactly did you make it on your cheerleading squad?"
The Oklahoman frowned slightly as her dad piped in from beside her, "That's something her mother and I still wonder about." Her father and Kelly shared a laugh at her expense.
"Haha," She laughed sarcastically, lowering herself closer to the floor so she could reach the movies scattered across it.
Kelly smiled warmly at her, "Really, don't worry about it. This happens all the time." Kelly knelt down as well and began to help the Oklahoman lift the rack up off the floor.
"Thanks." She mumbled quietly with a smile.
Kelly held her smile. "Don't mention it."
"Oh, hey," Her father exclaimed from behind her, "It's the biker girl."
Kelly nodded and glanced up at Stephen from the floor. "Yeah, one of my many exciting jobs."
Carrie raised an eyebrow at the other girl. "You have more than one job?" She paused, the obvious dawning on her. "Obviously you do, stupid question."
Kelly's gaze shifted back to Carrie. "Well only two now. This and I help out at the Zoo. Sadly I'm no longer the biker, aka pizza girl."
"No? What happened?"
Kelly continued to smile at the blonde. "That bike happened." She snorted, "So I quit that sucker." The three shared a hearty laugh.
Once their laughter died down Stephen placed a hand on his daughters shoulder as she rose to her feet. "You should invite her to the party, Care Bear."
"Oh, I...my parents are throwing a labor day Barbeque and inviting the entire neighborhood. I don't know, partly their attempt at making sure I'm not sucked into the anti-social vacuum. So they do what they know best...meddle." Carrie let out a breath of air and chuckled, "I'm rambling. Anyways, I know it's short notice and all being as the party is actually tomorrow but would you like to come? We have a pool and there will be food and stuff." She could tell the other girl was contemplating it and decided she would add, "You can bring your one friend."
"No need to explain which one friend." She joked, "I know the one." Carrie could tell that even though the girl was treating her response as a joke, there was hurt beneath her answer.
"Tell ya what," Carrie began, "You think about it some more," she paused again and reached out in front of her and pulled a pen that was tucked behind Kelly's ear and took the girls palm into her own hand and scribbled her number in it, "then give me a call or something and let me know. Don't feel bad if you decide not to come."
Kelly nodded and let her hand fall back at her side.
"No, forget that; feel bad if you decide not to come." Stephen said playfully. "You turned down pizza last time, we won't take no for an answer this time." He finished just as teasingly as he nudged Carrie with his shoulder.
"Right." Carrie said, trying to sound assertive.
Kelly laughed at the father and daughter. "I'll let y'all know. Anyhow, I should get back to work. You try not to knock anymore of my racks over, Blondezilla."
Carrie rolled her eyes at the other girl. "Get back to work my butt," She teased, "Have fun with those crossword puzzles and horoscopes." She handed the girl back her pen and watched her walk back over to her spot behind the counter.
As she watched Kelly walk away she could have sworn she heard her mutter something about the nickname her father had called her in front of the brunette not too long ago, but she wasn't certain.
"She is such a sweet girl."
Carrie turned towards her father as he spoke and smiled at him with a nod in response. Yeah, she agreed, the Texan was very sweet. She just wondered if she'd see this side more often or if the other version of Kelly would return once they were back in school.
