Coloring your own hair was one thing, Die thought to himself. Helping color someone else’s was an entirely different matter. At the moment, Kyo was perched in the bathroom, on the bathtub, waiting until it was time to rinse his hair clean. A towel was around the boy’s shoulders to make sure that everything stayed clean, but Die had already made a mess. He was wearing a good bit of that dye Kyo was using; smears of it ran up his forearms where the gloves he wore ended. Kyo’s ears and one of his cheeks had pink stained on them from where his hair had rebelled and touched the skin.
The air smelled like chemicals and Die had resorted to opening the windows to let in fresh air from outside. It was rainy outdoors, though, so the air was beginning to smell like chemical rain. Checking the time, he went back to the bathroom, carrying the packet of conditioner that was to be used after the dye was rinsed. “Do you want to rinse your hair, or should I do it?” Die asked, tugging the detachable shower head from its holder.
Nodding, Kyo pulled his shirt off and towel off his shoulders before leaning forward and bowing his head over the tub to have his hair rinsed. Die had finally convinced him to get the hair dye that morning, so here he was, with the color ready to come off his hair. It was dark, so he knew it would be darker than Die’s own red hair.
They had spent a good deal of time deliberating on what color to buy for the boy. Die swore that they loitered in the hair care aisle for at least thirty minutes, comparing this shade to that one. The one Kyo settled on seemed as though it would suit the boy well, though. Turning on the water, Die switched on the shower head. He directed the stream over Kyo’s head, making the first of the dye rush down into the basin of the tub in dark red rivulets. With his free hand, he rubbed the boy’s hair and urged the dye to wash out better, all the while spraying the strands with the water.
After a few minutes, the water finally began running clear. “Hold still,” Die said, turning off the water and placing the sprayer down. He retrieved a towel and wrapped it around Kyo’s hair so that it could suck the excess moisture from the boy’s hair before they applied the conditioner.
Die opened the packet and removed the towel, squirting the conditioner into his palm. Deftly, he worked it into Kyo’s newly-dyed hair, making sure to coat the strands evenly. “Okay,” he said, working the last bit in, “We have to wait for a few minutes.” Die peeled the gloves from his hands and placed them in the trash bin. “Any ideas for dinner tonight?” It was maybe a little early to be asking, but by the time they got Kyo’s hair in order and everything cleaned up, it would be close to time to start.
“Hm… Not really. Maybe we can go to the store and find something there?” It was all Kyo could come up with at the moment. He really didn’t care what they had for dinner, in all honesty. The boy was giddy about his hair that he couldn’t focus on anything but that. Kicking his feet slightly, he swished around the remaining water that was lying in the bottom of the tub.
“I guess,” Die said, going silent for a moment. “I think it’s time to rinse you,” he decided, guessing about how long it had been after a few minutes or so. The process of rinsing Kyo’s hair went quicker that time around and Die handed the boy his towel when they were through. “Here, towel it off and then go hit it with the blow dryer. I want to see how it looks.”
“Okay.” Kyo smiled and practically skipped to the bed room, grabbing the blow dryer on the way, and toweled off his hair. Flicking on the hairdryer, he used his brush and started blow drying it. It was soon dry and its full color showing. Kyo didn’t want to look at it before Die, so he avoided mirrors and went into the living room where Die was and cleared his throat to get his attention. “Well? How’s it look?”
Die turned around, resting his arm on the back of the couch so that he could look at Kyo. He felt his eyes widen slightly and he laughed a little, feeling surprised. “I think it is redder than the box said it would be, but I like it,” Die added in defense. They had been aiming for a deeper color, but Kyo’s hair was very vibrantly red. In a way, though, it looked very cute on the boy. It suited him somehow, maybe even better than his blond color. Die was on the fence about that, but it was aside from the point.
“Thanks.” He smiled brightly up at Die and hopped into his lap. Planting a kiss on his cheek, Kyo smiled and nuzzled up to him. “I’m glad you like it then.” If he was with his parents, they would have killed him for doing this. They were still very leery of his blond hair. “Thanks for letting me do this.”
“As long as you’re happy,” Die said. He placed one hand on Kyo’s leg and the other on the boy’s arm, rubbing his bicep idly. He shifted his fingers upward and moved a strand of hair into its proper place, letting the digits roam to the nape of Kyo’s neck so he could toy with the baby hair nestled there.
“I am, really.” Leaning up to give Die a kiss on the lips, he lingered there before pulling away and smiling up at the other read head. “So… can we go out to eat instead of getting something here?” It was worth a shot to ask, so he gave it a go.
“Yeah, just hop up and let me get my keys and wallet,” Die said, gently easing Kyo from his lap. Kyo complied and Die got up and went back to the bedroom, snatching up his keys from the dresser and stuffing his wallet into his back pocket. Kyo was leaning against the couch, waiting for him when he went back into the living room.
“Come on,” Die said gently, grabbing an umbrella from the holder by the door after flipping the porch light on. “Take this for a minute.” He handed it to Kyo to hold until he locked the door, ushering the boy outside. From his peripheral vision as he locked the door, he saw something dart onto the porch. “What the hell was that?” Die asked, turning around. He hoped it wasn’t a raccoon or some other wild animal—the redhead didn’t exactly want the local wildlife using his front porch as a motel.
On closer inspection, he saw that it wasn’t a raccoon, it was a cat. A wet, skittish-looking cat seeking refuge from the bad weather. It wasn’t exactly a pretty animal. It had dark fur, but was splotched with white and orange in places, making it seem like a patchwork quilt. But it seemed so damned sad and he felt badly for it. Kyo made a noise of adoration from his other side, and Die knew what was happening before a word was even uttered… Kyo wanted that nappy-looking cat.
“Die… It’s scared and wet…” Kyo gave Die the umbrella back before kneeling down to the cat. He reached his hand out, letting the cat sniff his hand before it rubbed up against it. Giving a small smile, he watched it move around and found that it was a female cat. She looked rather big, too big to be a stray. “I think something’s wrong with it… she’s pretty big for a stray.”
That was an alarm for Die, a major red flag. Crouching down, Die cautiously reached out and stroked along the cat’s spine. His fingers ran along the animal’s side and found it swollen and tense, exactly what he had been dreading. Groaning softly, Die spoke, “Damn it, Kyo, she’s so pregnant, she’s about to pop.” And he knew exactly what would come of this—they would take it inside and take care of her.
“We can’t leave her out here, the kittens will die.” Kyo looked up at Die with a pleading look, feeling the female cat rubbing up against his leg and bumping against his and Die’s hand. “Can we keep her, Die? She needs a home for her kittens…”
“We have to,” Die said, frowning slightly, standing up and moving to unlock the door. Kyo had scooped the cat up in his arms and was standing behind him. He opened the door and let the boy enter before going back in for himself. “Here, I’ll find a box or something,” Die said, glancing at the creature all snuggled up in Kyo’s arms.
Holding the cat gently, he scratched her chest and chin, hearing her purr loudly at the attention. He smiled at her, trying to think of a name for the cat. When Die returned with a box and a few towels lining it for comfort and for when the kittens were born. After Die set it down, Kyo placed her carefully into the box, watching as she shifted around before getting comfortable and lying down. “Is it okay if we stay here instead?” Kyo asked as he looked up at Die from the floor, his hand caressing the female cat’s head softly.
“You can,” Die said, picking his keys back up. “I’m going to get the cat some things and I guess a few groceries,” he added after a moment’s thought. The evening was certainly not going as planned, but he just had to go with things as they happened. “I’ll be back.”
Nodding, Kyo turned his attention to the cat as she licked at her fur. He smiled down at her and continued thinking of different names. “Hm… Mayu. I think that’s what I’ll name you.” Kyo smiled more and scratched her ears, earning a happy meow mixed with a purr as if it was saying it liked the name. The boy laughed softly and stood from the floor, moving to the bathroom to get a towel before moving back to Mayu. Pulling her into his lap, he started to dry her off.
Die hurried through the store and checked out. Precariously, he held the umbrella over himself and loaded the purchases into the backseat of the car.
Climbing in the front seat, he shook the umbrella as dry as possible before placing it in the passenger side’s floor board. He drove home in silence, listening to the rain. When he arrived home, he made the same mad dash to stay dry as he had in the store’s parking lot.
Hearing Die pull in, Kyo put Mayu back in her box before standing and going to the front door. Opening it, he aided the other in getting the groceries into the house and to the kitchen. Mayu watched them, but she didn’t move from her spot in the box, only lying down on her side. Kyo helped Die put the things away, finding a place to put the cat food, litter box, and extra litter. “I figured out a name for her.” He spoke up, moving to hug Die and rubbing his back slightly.
“What’s her name?” Die questioned, indulging the boy’s enthusiasm. He put his arms around Kyo and held the boy in place for a moment, looking down at him. He still couldn’t get over the boy’s new hair color. The red looked cute, though. He still held on to that notion.
“Mayu. She seemed to like it too.” Kyo nuzzled up to Die and patted his back. “Let’s get something to eat now; I’m starting to get hungry now.” He moved to pull out the food Die had gotten for them and sat them on the counter before taking his seat at the table. Letting his hand settle on his stomach, he could feel the slight rise there. His stomach was getting slightly bigger now as he was heading close to the end of his second month. It was hard to believe that two months had already come and gone.
“How do you feel about TV dinners?” Die asked, frowning. Their plans were thrown off and that seemed like the quickest route to take. The microwave would most likely be their salvation tonight. Die suspected that sentiment very greatly.
“Perfect. It’s just the thing on a rainy night like this. We could watch some movies while we eat too.” Kyo nodded and rested his elbow against the table and turned his body to watch Die prepare the microwaveable dinner. He sighed, loving the way he felt at peace and comfortable living with Die instead of the always tense and unsteady atmosphere of his parent’s home.
