A couple of weeks later only a few days before Louisa was due to fly home to Australia. Josh joined her at her house in Long Island for a couple of days of R and R. Winter had well and truly set in and piles of dust coloured snow lay on the side of the road and a bone chilling ache was hanging in the air. Despite the foul weather Louisa still insisted on walking Mocha her puppy to keep the working dog mutt from going stir crazy. The young puppy wrapped in a warm doggy rug bounced along at the end of her leash sniffing every fence post and yapping at every dog they passed along the way.

‘I’m so glad I’m heading home for Christmas New York Winters are feral!’ Louisa complained zipping up her jacket collar higher ‘I so cannot wait for the summer weather back home’

‘So you can wear a bikini?’ Josh joked lacing his fingers through hers.

‘Yeah sure so I can wear a bikini’ Louisa said dryly squeezing his hand ‘I’ll even have Leisl take a pic of me in one so I can text it to you and prove that I wore one’

‘Good that’ll be your caller I.D picture then’ Josh said with a laugh ‘but maybe not I don’t know if I’d be able to control myself if you rang me while I was in public’

‘I daresay you’d manage’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘d’you want to stay for longer than a couple of days? I go back home in a week and I want to spend a bit more time with you. You’ve been so busy the last few weeks it’s a miracle we’ve been able to get together for dinner’

‘If you’ll have me’ Josh said ‘but I’ll have to go back to Manhattan and get some more clothes I’ve only got what I’m wearing a couple of changes and my dress suit I don’t wear that unless I have to go to a fancy show or function’

‘I suppose I can wait for you to come back’ Louisa said with a coy smile ‘after last night....especially’

Josh dropped a chaste kiss on her lips.
‘I know you think you weren’t any good but you were’ he said.

‘But I have no idea what I’m doing!’ Louisa said.

‘But you’re learning’ Josh said ‘and you took my suggestions and put them into effect. You’ve made me come more than once. You can keep not knowing what you’re doing because it’s working for me’

Louisa went bright red.
‘You’re making me blush’ she said avoiding his gaze.

‘Might do more than that when we get back from walking Mocha’ he whispered in her ear ‘we can warm up in an unconventional way if you like’

‘You violin players have the libido of a wild brumby stallion’ Louisa said dryly giving him a playful elbow ‘how long has it been for you if you want to ‘help me warm up’ in your words?’

‘You violin players? I should remind you girl you are one of the club’ Josh said ‘until after the tree lighting it was before the tour for me before things with Lisa and I went to hell in a hand basket’ Josh said ‘I didn’t want to push things with you in that way’

‘Well that explains your exuberance in the bedroom then’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘or is that your usual style?’

‘No not usually I’m not usually so ‘energetic’ as you put it’ Josh said ‘I usually take my time sorry if I’ve been rushing’

Louisa squeezed his hand.
‘You haven’t been J it’s been perfect each time’ She said ‘you’re very considerate in the bedroom you’re more concerned with how I feel than how you feel. Every man on earth should be like that. I’m just glad the man I lost my virginity to is like that and doesn’t just roll over and go to sleep’

‘That’s not going to happen unless you totally and utterly exhaust me’ Josh said with a grin ‘that might happen come the more you pick up. I have a sneaking suspicion you’re not just passionate about the violin’

Louisa giggled.
‘You’re a naughty naughty boy Joshua Bell’ she said giving him a playful elbow in the ribs ‘now stop distracting me I need to walk my dog’

Two hours later Louisa and Josh returned from walking Mocha frozen to the bone and their teeth chattering.

‘Gaaah I will never get used to American winters even if I live here for the rest of my life!’ Louisa complained as she hung up her jacket in the entrance hall.

‘They’re worse back home’ Josh said hanging his jacket next to hers ‘last year Mom and Rachel’s horses were snowed into his stables and it took us seven hours to get them out. It doesn’t often get that bad here’

Louisa kicked off her shoes then turned and made her way into the lounge room where she added more wood and kindling to the dwindling fire.

Ah that’s better’ she said with a sigh sitting on the lamb’s wool rug as the fire roared to life ‘join me?’

Josh sat down next to her and wiggled his own toes in the sudden warmth.
‘There are so many things that could be said about sitting on a lambs wool rug in front of a roaring fire you know’ he said with a barely there grin.

‘Oh how many things?’ Louisa said untucking her shirt and slowly pulling it off to reveal a lacy pink and black lace bra holding up her breasts.

Josh’s eyes widened.
‘Well lacy pink and black lingerie for a start’ he said leaning over and kissing her hungrily on the lips.

Louisa got up on her knees and scooted closer to him.
‘Anything else?’ she whispered combing her fingers through his hair.

‘Many things that would take far too long for me to list’ Josh murmured placing a kiss between her breasts ‘you’re beautiful you really are you know, this is one Christmas I’m not really looking forward to’

‘Hmm and why’s that?’

Josh reached around her torso and unsnapped her bra strap with an expert flick of his wrist.
‘Because you’re going to be on the other side of the world’ he murmured as the scrap of lace fell way ‘d’you want to go away somewhere for a few days after you get back? I hear the Italian Riviera is warm this time of year’

‘J I’ve only got two and a half weeks off for the Christmas break and I’ll have to go back to work pretty much straight after I get back from Australia’ Louisa breathed as he sucked one of her nipples into his mouth and teased it into a rock hard peak ‘there’s not going to be enough time to go anywhere and if we’re going to the Riviera I want to go for at least a week’

‘Damn’ he cussed tucking his fingers under the waist of her trousers and sliding them over her hips ‘but you’ll come with me as soon as you can get away?’

Louisa momentarily sat down and shimmied out of her trousers before getting up on her knees again.
‘Of course’ she whispered kissing him hungrily ‘mightn’t be for a while yet though, I’ve only been in this job a little over two months’

‘So I’ll have to be content with seeing you on weekends then?’ Josh said in disappointment.

Louisa squeaked when she felt Josh slip two fingers into her warmth.
‘F-for the moment’ she moaned as his thumb found her clit and began circling it ‘oh you shit Josh this is not fair!’

‘What isn’t?’ Josh said in amusement hooking his fingers sharply and applying more pressure to her nub.

Louisa fell forward on his shoulders.

Louisa giggled.
‘I think I like this need for dominance in the bedroom side of you Mr Bell’ she said as he rested a hand on her rounded hips and kissed her hungrily ‘d’you do handcuffs?’

‘Nuh uh not that far’ Josh murmured trailing the calloused left finger tips down her abdomen and to the juncture of her thighs and legs where he gently pushed them apart ‘I think you’ll find I’m a very passive aggressive person’

Josh got up and quickly divested himself of all his remaining clothes then settled in between Louisa’s legs. He immediately noticed her shaking.

‘Hey what’s up?’ he asked his voice heavy with concern.

‘Nothing I just know what you’re about to do and how it’s going to make me feel and I can’t wait’ Louisa breathed.

‘You like me making you squirm huh?’ Josh said.

Oh you bet’ Louise breathed jumping slightly as he latched onto her core ‘god the two weeks of Christmas are going to be hell on earth missing out on this’

‘You don’t have to’ Josh murmured kissing her hungrily ‘you did that when we woke up this morning’

‘But it was half arsed!” Louisa complained ‘I still don’t know what I’m doing!’

‘Honey you did fine’ Josh said propping his head up on one hand and resting a hand on her hip ‘you made me swear in Italian. No one’s made me do that before’

Louisa giggled.
‘I must be learning’ she whispered sitting up and leaning down to kiss him.

‘You are’ Josh said as she circled one of his nipples with the tip of her tongue ‘Ah!’

‘Like that huh?’ Louisa said with a giggle nipping the nipple again.

Josh just jerked again. Louisa pushed him down on his back and straddled his legs before leaning down and kissing him hard on the lips.

‘Hmm soft soft’ Josh murmured trailing his hands down her sides and letting them come to rest on her rounded hips ‘no need to go so hard so early’

‘I’m crap’ Louisa muttered immediately softening her kiss.

‘No you’re not you’re just inexperienced’ Josh murmured massaging her backside and returning her kiss with eager enthusiasm ‘Jesus you’re a stubborn woman aren’t you? You refuse to believe you’re learning. Were you this much of a pain in the ass at college?’

‘You bet’ he said ‘I’m discovering things about myself I didn’t know since meeting you, you know’

‘Oh and what would they be?’ Louisa whispered kissing his neck.

That would be telling’ Josh murmured as she gripped his length again and tickled the head with her nails ‘fuck that tickles!’

‘Am I teasing you Mr Bell? Louisa said lustfully in his ear pushing him back so he was forced to lean on the foot of the sofa.

‘Now wasn’t that worth going slow for?’ Josh puffed his muscular chest heaving.

‘Hmm it was’ Louisa murmured kissing him languidly ‘thank you for showing me how you like it J’

‘That’s alright sweetheart you do those things for the one you love don’t you?’ Josh murmured resting his forehead against hers.

Louisa suddenly jerked back her eyes wide. She then got off him in a hurry grabbed her closed and ran up the stairs. Josh grabbed his pants pulled them back on and took off after her dread filling his stomach.

‘Louie?’ he called at the top of the stairs ‘hon where are you?’

The sound of the shower turning on filtered through the master bedroom. Josh made his way through to the spacious room and knocked on the ensuite door.

‘GO AWAY!' Louisa bellowed.

Josh knocked again.

‘Fuck off!’

Josh got angry then.
‘Why the hell should I?’ he yelled back ‘I think I deserve to know why after making love to the most gorgeous woman in the universe she ran off on me!’

‘You don’t make love to a woman unless you LOVE HER!’ Louisa screeched.

‘How do you know I don’t love you?’ Josh bellowed ‘Jesus Christ woman!’

‘You don’t love me no man ever has!’ Louisa yelled ‘the one I thought did cheat on me with my BEST FRIEND!’

‘I’M NOT GOING TO DO THAT!’ Josh yelled ‘I’m not adulterous like that son of a bitch!’

‘How do I know that?’

‘I’ll give you the damn cell numbers for every one of my ex girlfriends and you can ask them!’ Josh bellowed ‘I never have cheated on a woman and I never would!’

‘We’ve only been together for three months!’

‘SO WHAT?’ Josh yelled ‘what the hell has that got to do with the price of damn eggs? I know what I feel Louisa and I’m to going to fucking apologise!’

‘DON’T FUCKING CALL ME LOUISA!’

‘Fuck you then! You need to sort out your priorities Lou ring me when you know what the hell they are!’

Josh thumped away from the ensuite door then instantly grabbed his belongings and his Strad before heading downstairs and re-dressing. He then left the house slamming the door behind him before getting into his Porsche and roaring off back across the East River to Manhattan a mixture of rage, hurt and disbelief coursing through him.

Several times on the journey back into Manhattan Josh’s Blackberry rang with Louisa’s caller I.D flashing up but he decided not to answer. He arrived back at Gramercy Park slamming the breaks on and parking diagonally before getting out and stumping up to his apartment and slamming the door.

‘GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!’ He bellowed kicking out at the nearest thing (Which just happened to be the kitchen trash can) in frustration ‘WOMEN!’

Swearing at the rubbish he had just strewn around the kitchen floor just made his way upstairs to his bedroom where he grumpily stowed the Strad in its vault in the depths of his walk in robe then put his belongings away. He then stripped off and drowned himself under a scalding hot shower.

After he’d calmed down Josh towelled off and re-dressed before heading into the kitchen to clean up the mess he’d made. After he’d wiped up the last of his mess his Blackberry once again began ringing this time with the bright happy tone of ‘Rockin’ Robin’ a tone he had assigned for Rachel’s number. With a groan he made his way into the bedroom and picked the phone up answering with a falsely cheery ‘City morgue you stab ‘em we slab ‘em’

‘Oh don’t try and be cheerful big brother I know you’re not’ Rachel said an edge to her voice ‘what the hell happened?’

‘Nothing just got out of the shower actually’ Josh said ‘why?’

‘Because I’ve just had Louisa on the phone. In tears and miserable as fuck blubbering she’s been trying to get you on your cell for the last hour and a half. She said you two had a blazing argument. She wouldn’t say what it was about but she wanted me to see if you were alright. She’s worried you’d gone and done something stupid’

‘Well she shouldn’t I’m fine’ Josh said testily.

‘Oh don’t pull that bullshit with me Joshua David Bell I’m not stupid’ Rachel said ‘you’re not fine, she’s not fine. Something happened between you two and I want to know what the hell it was about’

‘How about it’s none of your goddamned business?’ Josh snapped.

‘Hey don’t pull that attitude with me Josh I’m only trying to help’ Rachel snapped ‘well I’m trying to find out what the hell happened first I can’t help til I know what happened’

‘Well I don’t feel like talking’ Josh said testily pulling the Blackberry away from his ear and throwing it onto the bench. He then started banging about his kitchen preparing dinner.

Across the East River Louisa was feeling miserable. Mocha nosed her with a whine and Cookie her cat sat himself down in her lap staring her out intently.

‘Well you two can’t help!’ she said with a croak,

Mocha whined.

Louisa picked up the house phone on the side table and quickly dialled her Mum back home. It rang several times then picked up.
‘H-hello?’ a sleepy voice said.

‘M-mum?’ Louisa croaked ‘It’s Lou’

‘Honey what’s wrong?’ Jennifer Riminton asked in concern ‘you don’t sound happy hon’

‘I’m miserable Mum!’ Louisa cried absentmindedly scratching Cookie’s head.

‘What’s happened bub? You haven’t been fired have you?’

‘No work’s fine Mum brilliant in fact’ Louisa said coughing slightly.

‘Well that only leaves your love life’ Jennifer said sympathetically ‘what’s up honey?’

‘Josh and I had a blazing row’ Louisa said with a sniff.

‘Define blazing’

‘He left skid marks on the driveway and road outside the house from the tyres of his Porsche’ Louisa said with a sniff ‘and I’ve been trying to ring him but he’s ignoring me it’s gone to voice mail five times. I rang one of his sisters to see if she could check he’s alright’

‘And is he alright?’

‘I don’t know yet I rang you as soon as I hung up from her’

‘Honey you need to tell me what happened’ Jennifer said softly ‘I can’t even begin to help if I don’t have half an idea of what happened between you two’

Louisa took a deep shuddering breath
‘It started a couple of weeks ago’ she began ‘you know how Josh was invited to perform at the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas Tree lighting with Yo Yo Ma and Josh Groban?’

‘Yeah go on’

Well we came back here to my place afterwards and well we-we-‘

‘Honey I’m not going to laugh at you’ Jennifer said.

‘We made love Mum’ Louisa said in almost a whisper.

‘Oh I see’ Jennifer said ‘but I don’t understand....’

‘It was my first time Mum!’

‘What-Oooohhhhhh’ Jennifer said ‘he didn’t hurt you did he?’

‘No Mum he didn’t in fact the whole night was totally the opposite’ Louisa said ‘J was so incredibly patient and gentle with me Mum it was out of this world. I’m not going to go into great detail but we did it three times we that night and he made me peak each time....several times’

‘Good so he was gentle with you’ Jennifer said ‘that’s what you want for your first time. So what happened after that? You said that was a couple of weeks ago’

‘Well the two weeks since have been out of this world’ Louisa went on with a sniff ‘we’ve not been able to be together every day because he’s been lecturing at the Conservatorium or I’ve been working at the clinic but when we have met up it’s been sweet and wondering and beyond caring’

‘So you’re with a gorgeous older man who clearly cares for you and makes love like a porn star’ Jennifer said in amusement’ I know you’re hurting honey but from this side of the fence there doesn’t seem to be much to complain about’

Louisa couldn’t help but laugh.
‘I haven’t finished yet’ she said with a watery chuckle.

‘Sorry for interrupting hon go on’

‘Well he came over last night to spend the last few days with me before I come back home for the Christmas hols’ Louisa went on ‘last night we went to dinner at Valentinos a posh Italian joint on the upper west side of Manhattan then came home to watch a DVD. The today he came with me when I walked Mocha and afterwards when we got back and warmed up we had sex on the lounge room floor in front of the fire. I still have no idea what I’m doing so he took his time with me half an hour Mum then right afterwards he said he loved me’

‘Oh’ Jennifer said ‘and that’s a bad thing?’

‘Mum it scared the living shit out of me!’ Louisa yelped ‘no one has said they loved me since Chris and I found him fucking Marie on the day we were going to get married! I don’t want that happening to me ever again!’

‘Honey how do you know it will?’ Jennifer said ‘I’m not downplaying what happened to you all those years ago. In fact I can understand it crushed you but you have to open your heart if you want to find true love again darling’

‘But Josh could be playing with me Mum and if he is I don’t think I could handle it!’

‘Honey you’ve told me how things ended between him and his ex and I’m guessing from that he wouldn’t say he loved you unless he well and truly meant it’ Jennifer said ‘did he actually say ‘I Love You’?

‘No after we’d had sex I thanked him for being so patient and teaching me how he likes it and his exact words were ‘That’s alright sweetheart you do those things for the one you love don’t you?’ It was then I pushed him away and ran up the stairs and into the ensuite. That was an hour and a half ago. He screeched off in the Porsche’

‘So lemme guess you screamed at Josh for saying he loved you but you didn’t tell him why so he got pissed off and roared off back to Manhattan’ Jennifer said.

‘Yeah that sounds about right’ Louisa said sheepishly.

‘Oh Louisa Anne Riminton no wonder he belted back across the bridge to Manhattan if you didn’t explain to him why you were mad at him!’ Jennifer exclaimed in exasperation ‘he’s done what I would’ve expected him to. No one likes to be yelled at if they don’t know what they’ve done wrong honey! No wonder he didn’t answer his mobile when you’ve rung him he’s hurt!’

‘I’ve fucked up Mum haven’t I?’ Louisa wailed.

‘Yeah you have honey but I can see why’ Jennifer said sympathetically ‘you’re scared to let yourself go emotionally after what Chris and Marie did to you. I don’t blame you I’m sure no one would. But as I said before sweetheart you have to take the risk and open your heart if you want to find true love again. You’ll grow into a very lonely old woman if you don’t let someone in’

‘But I’m scared Mum!’

‘I know you are honey but give Josh a chance huh? So he loves you is that such a big scary thing? You’re a beautiful woman sweetheart and clearly he thinks so to. He wouldn’t have taken his time in the bedroom with you if he didn’t’

‘Aw I dunno Mum’

‘Please honey take a little risk it won’t kill you’ Jennifer said ‘I haven’t said anything to you up til this point because it’s not really my place but since you’ve been with Josh you’ve changed. You’re happy, cheerful more upbeat. He’s brought out the best in you hon and I want to one day thank him personally for it’

‘I’m going to hate swallowing my pride like this’ Louisa grumbled.

Jennifer laughed.
‘Swallowing your pride is something you’ve always had issues with honey’ she said in amusement ‘right from when you were a little girl admitting you’d stuffed up was excruciating for you’

‘Oh ha ha Mum very funny’ Louisa said dryly ‘well I better go and start making up I might have to go to Manhattan now’

‘One question hon’

‘Hmm?’

‘D’you love him?’

‘I don’t know Mum really I don’t’ Louisa said as Mocha leapt up onto the sofa and put her head on her leg ‘it’s not lust it’s definitely more than that. I think about Josh all the time. I’m always flicking through the pictures of him on my iPhone and my ringtone for him is a recording of him playing Ave Maria. And we’re not intimate every time we’re together. Several times we’ve just lain on the couch and watched a movie or I’ve spent time at his apartment watching him compose or practice. You know he’s set me up with a viola teacher at the Conservatorium and is paying for my lessons? That would cost a fortune! I went nuts at him when he said he was paying for it but he wouldn’t take no for an answer’

‘Honey do you want my honest opinion?’

‘Yeah’

‘You didn’t intentionally muck thinks up sweetheart and when you and Josh have calmed down and you explain this to him he’ll understand’ Jennifer said ‘if he loves you as much as I think he does he’ll understand’

‘I hope so Mum I really do’ Louisa said absentmindedly scratching Mocha’s ears ‘god you should see me I have Mocha her head on my knee diving me the puppy dog eyes look and Cookie sitting right on my lap purring like a two stroke lawnmower’

‘Ah animals know when you’re feeling miserable hon they’re there to make you feel better’ Jennifer said ‘they’ll follow you around like a bad smell til they’re sure you’re feeling better’

‘Yeah probably’ Louisa said ‘thanks for the chat Mum I know it’s six in the morning over there. I hope I didn’t wake Dad up’

‘Oh god no hon that man would sleep through a nuclear holocaust’ Jennifer said dryly.

Louisa giggled.
‘I miss you guys’ she said.

‘We miss you too hon’ Jennifer said ‘but five days time and you’ll be back home. We’ve already got your room ready’

‘Great stuff’ Louisa said finally cracking a smile ‘well I better go Mum I’ll be in touch alright? Tell Dad I say Hi’

‘Will do sweetheart see you Friday okay?’

‘Yep see you then Mum’
