It had turned into a dark and stormy night, the black clouds had gathered in, obscuring the moon and casting an eerie haze of darkness across the ground. Colin hurried himself the short distance from his car to the door. It was past ten already and he was exhausted from the long journey back from London.Sliding his ID card at each security door he made his way back to his apartment. Once through the door he threw aside his coat to quickly check his desk for any important mail that had arrived in his absence. Most were nothing of interest and he tossed them across towards the bin in the corner which was when a small plain envelope fell out from underneath. Picking it up from the floor he frowned at the lack of address on the front. Although he was tired, curiosity got the better of him and he tore it open. The crumpled letter inside was scribbled, blotted and hard to read but under the light he could just about make it out.
‘Xxx Best Wishes xxx Take care xxx Lady G.x’ his fingers found the necklace that was coiled in the bottom corner of the envelope. He stopped for a moment, trying to work out the meaning of the whole thing, if there was one. Maybe it was one of Georgiana’s silly attention seeking moments, or maybe there was something more. It didn’t look right; there was something odd about the whole thing. Pacing for a moment he considered going to bed, forgetting about the whole thing and dealing with Georgiana in the morning but for some reason he had a bad feeling, a feeling that she might have done something unbelievably stupid.
He raced up to her room, praying that he was wrong and once outside her door, looked up and down to check that no one was watching and flicked his security card in front of the locking mechanism. The door swung open and the room was in darkness.
Pulling back the sheets to reveal a pile of pillows on each bed he frantically searched the room for a clue to where they had gone. In the corner of the room the carpet was pulled back and a pile of wrapping paper and ripped up rizlas were heaped with pieces of cut up shirt. It was like some sort of puzzling crime scene, definitely not the view of two people who were simply leaving and heading home. He traced through the lipstick kiss on the mirror with his thumb, they were going out for the night, he was pretty sure he was right on that one.
If the girls had managed to somehow get out of the building there was every possibility that they had left the island, but with what he had just seen, there was also the chance that they had simply gone wandering down to the village. Either way he had two choices, pretend he hadn’t seen any of this and go back and wait for the headmaster to deal with the whole situation or go out there and see if he could find them. The second option was not just difficult it was a chance that he would have to take that he could find them before morning. If he did find them he had a few choice words that he was going to say to them both, that was if the headmaster hadn’t found out about the whole thing by then. No girl had ever escaped from the academy at night; he couldn’t imagine the amount of trouble it could cause, especially if they had reached the village.
There was no time to lose, not stopping to even pick up his coat he grabbed his car keys and ran back out to his car. The rain was falling steadily now and he had to take it carefully as he drove down towards the village. How could she have been this stupid, he cursed every rabbit that ran in front of the path, slowing him down.
He hadn’t been to the village often but knew of the pub which was his first stop. The lights were on and music pumped loudly along with shouts and cheers.
“Damn you Georgiana, why do I just know that this is something to do with you?” He sighed, switching off the engine and staring at the door worrying about what he was going to find behind it.
Music pumped like a heartbeat from behind the door, pulsing through his hand as he pushed it open. He stood, glancing around the room for a moment, and suddenly got eye contact with a shocked looking Carlene who sat at a side table with her arm draped around a loudly laughing and very drunk ginger haired man who had his hand in her cleavage. As soon as she saw him come through the door she turned pale and made a hasty effort to remove his hand and pull her shirt together across her chest. Her second hasty effort to escape out to hide in the toilets was scuppered by her tripping over the chair; Colin grabbed her arm as she fell and pulled her to her feet.
“Oh god, I’m really sorry Sir, we didn’t mean to...I mean we kind of did but we were going to come back, it was just a...”
“Shh” He put two fingers to her lips, stopping her frantic explanations. “Where is she?”
Carlene slowly raised her shaky hand and pointed towards the corner of the bar where a throng of men were crowded with their backs to them.
“Ok, I want you to go out to the car park and get into my car, stay there, and do not move!” He let go of her arm and watched her scurry like a frightened mouse to the door. Once he knew she had left, he turned his attention back to the crowd and began making his way over. Pushing between the onlookers he headed towards the front to see Georgiana dancing, alone. Singing along to the track that pumped from the jukebox she was lost in her performance, her hands wandering over her body, up and down. She twisted and turned, the scraps of her shirt had fallen open showing her underwear. He could sense the men surrounding him reaching out to try and grab at her, waving money like she was some kind of paid entertainment. All of a sudden her eyes flickered, noticing him there at the front, just standing there, watching with his arms folded, staring at her. A tiny smirk came across her face as she moved towards him, thrusting her chest forwards, pulling her hands up to pull her skirt to show a glimpse above her panty line. Leaning forwards, face to face and staring into his eyes she sang along with the music, grabbing his shirt collar tightly.
“You say that I’m kinda difficult,
But it’s always someone else’s fault,”
Releasing her grip she held up her little finger in front of his face,
“Got you wrapped around my finger babe,
You can count on me to misbehave... “
He bit back the urge to grab her right there, her sweet perfume still lingered as she danced away towards the wall. Once they had got eye contact again he mouthed the words
“Come here now!”
Georgiana smiled to herself.
“Make me!” She mouthed back, blowing a kiss.
The next time she danced past him he grabbed her by the waist and in one move, swiftly flipped her up over his shoulder and turned to leave. The locals parted, some audible tones of disappointment, Colin pushed them aside angrily whilst trying to keep hold of a kicking and screaming Georgiana.
“Put me down!” She shouted, pummelling her fists on his back as he strode out of the doors to the car park. Opening the door of the car, he half threw her into the passenger seat and slammed the door. Georgiana flew at the handle, pulling and tugging and banging her fist against the window.
“Let me out, let me fucking out of here!”
Carlene sat in the back, watching her friend screaming and kicking her feet against the door, trying desperately to open it. Colin sat back staring straight ahead, waiting until she had become silent.
“If you’re quite finished can I ask what the hell you are doing?” He said quietly, staring ahead and not looking at her.
“Let me out; let me out, why won’t this fucking door open? Argh!”
“Child locked, so I wouldn’t waste your energy!” He replied. “Now are you going to tell me why you are out here and what happened or do I take you both back to the headmaster right now?”
“I wanted one night, one night out and I can’t even have that without you assholes ruining It.!”
“You know the rules; you just broke practically all of them, if there’s not a reason for that then you are taking one pretty big risk doing this, of all the stupid...”
“What do you care?” She shouted suddenly, “Why are you even here? Fuck you!! You left.”
“Yes, I left and then I came back.”
“Marvellous, oh how lovely, had a nice few weeks in your perfect little world, maybe you should have stayed there!” She shouted, kicking angrily at the dashboard.
“What is your problem? “ He asked finally, exasperated at her, “What is your problem?” He repeated, more softly, realising how genuinely upset she was.
“You left me!” She replied in a broken voice,
“I left you a note....it explained everything.”
“No you didn’t, there was no note.”
“I left you a note on my desk explaining that I had gone back to London at short notice to sign some important documents, to clear up some very important legal matters. “
“No, there was nothing. Worthington said that...”
“Worthington! You believed that idiot, oh for Christ’s sake, you know him Georgiana, and you know what he’s like. Why on earth did you believe anything that came out of his mouth? And even worse, you come up with this ridiculous reaction, I really thought we were past all this!”
“I don’t know...” She trailed off, sinking her head into her hands. A lie, why hadn’t she realised, why hadn’t she trusted him. Bursting into tears she scrunched herself up in a ball.
“We hitched a lift with the laundry delivery guy.” Carlene piped up from the background. “We were going to come back before morning. “
“Very ingenious!” Colin replied, leaning back and holding his head.
“Are we going to get into trouble?” She squeaked.
“Not if I can help it. Not that I’m impressed at all with what you have done tonight but I’m going to try my best to get you both back without anyone finding out.”
“Thank you.” Carlene whispered, sitting back in her seat and waiting to see what Georgiana was going to do, she hadn’t a clue what was going on in her friend’s head or why she was acting that way towards one of the staff.
Colin leaned over, pulling the seat belt across Georgiana and clicking it into place. She sat back, brushing her hair out of her eyes and staring at him through black mascara stained eyes.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered. He took her hands in his own and held her tight.
“I’m going to take you back, I’m going to try my best to make sure they don’t find out you ever left. All I want for you to do is calm down, be quiet and trust me.” He stared at her, waiting for her reply. She nodded slowly and took a deep breath, stopping her sobbing. She reached out, touching his hair and playing with it through her fingers, he responded with a kiss, slow, deep and passionate, his fingers gripping into her hair, pulling her towards him. She tasted of cola and wine, her breathing became more rapid and he could feel her arousal rising as she kissed him back deeper, not letting him go.
“Oh my god!”
They both turned around to see a shocked Carlene staring at them from the back seat. “Are you two...are you?” She covered her mouth in disbelief.
“Well that made things a hell of a lot more difficult...” Colin sighed, breaking away from Georgiana and covering his face. “Right, we are going now before things get any worse.” With that he started the engine and reversed rapidly out of the car park and headed out towards the academy. Georgiana looked out of the window, watching the scenery fly past in the darkness. So she had been wrong, she had been stupid, she had lost her trust yet again, but what was the point of any of this if it was all hidden away. She dug her nails into her wrist, stupid, yet again. The car drew into the academy car park and all was in darkness, silent and still. Colin took both their hands and lead them hurriedly to the staff entrance. It was just as quiet inside, nothing but the sound of their footsteps. They had almost reached their room when a voice spoke out behind them, deep and stern.
“And what, pray, would be going on here?”
