Chapter 14: Memory Lane With Andy
Andy chuckled as she watched Rhea and Angela walk down the aisle with her mom guiding them. She checked her watch and she sighed. They've been at the church for about three hours already.
"How did you convince Lynn to have a church wedding?" Alex asked.
Andy shrugged, "I didn't, she just told me she fell in love with this church and talked to someone. She knows my parents are Catholic so I guess she wanted to incorporate that in the wedding."
The two little girls came up to Andy and gave her a hug. She kissed both their cheeks and told them to go to mom. She stood straight up and smiled watching Trevor walk down the aisle carrying the small pillow that would hold their rings. His eyes lit up seeing Andy. She chuckled when he started to pick up his pace.
"Slow down there buddy. Take it slow, okay?" She said in a gentle tone. He nodded and started to slow down a little. When he reached the altar he gave her a hug. She smiled and kissed the top of his head. She told the three little ones that they did an amazing job and she couldn't wait to see them dressed up.
She turned her eyes towards the end of the aisle as the music began to play softly, she saw Lynn and Tim walking walking down the aisle. Even though this was just the wedding rehearsal Lynn looked beautiful in her eyes. Even in her black t shirt, checkered black and white pants, and small heeled boots. Her blonde hair in a loose ponytail.
She smiled making eye contact with Lynn and she gave her a wink. Her smile grew when she saw Lynn blush like always. One day she would ask about that. When they reached the alter Tim kissed Lynn on her forehead and gave her hand to Andy. He gave Andy a wink and gently pat on her arm.
He took his seat by Cathy and took her hand in hers, "I never thought this day would come." Cathy whispered.
"Who knew someone like Andy would capture our little girl's heart." Tim said putting his arm around her and kissed her temple. They both turned their attention to the couple with smiles.
"Okay, so now Clint's going to make his speech about Andrea. Then, when he's done, Melissa will say somethings about Lynn. Then they will alternate. Andrea will say her little speech about Lynn. Then, Lynn will go. Then, the vows. Let's practice the ring exchange." Susan said.
Andy turned to Ethan just as Lynn turned to David. The two pretended to give them the rings and the two women turned back to each other.
"Good, so we do the vows, place the rings on the fingers. Melissa and Clint do their thing. Then, the kiss, and done. Everyone cheers, Andrea and Lynn start walking down the aisle." Susan said with a smile.
Andy held out her arm and Lynn looped her arm through hers. They smiled at each other and started to walk down the aisle. Once they reached the end they turned and smiled.
"Can't believe this took three hours." Andy whispered putting her arm around Lynn.
"Wait til Saturday, it's going to be even longer." Lynn said kissing her cheek and they started to walk back down the aisle.
"The beach was simple. We just did our own little thing. Wasn't too long. This is a bit much." Andy confessed.
"I know, but this is a way for all of our family and friends to witness it." Lynn told her giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
"I know, I know, I just didn't think it was going to be this big." Andy said with a sigh and they stopped in the middle of the aisle.
"Well I didn't know you knew so many people."
"Honestly didn't know THAT many people either. I just invited those that have been in my life for a long time. Plus my family. Well, the ones that could come." Andy said as she went to one of the pews and sat down.
Lynn really looked at her and knew she was a little stressed out. She let out a small sigh and sat down next to her.
"I didn't want to bring this up, but did you talk with your cousins?"
Andy lifted her head and looked at her, "Yeah, I took them all out for breakfast this morning and told them everything. They're supportive, and there were tears. But they understand. It also helps that one of them has a Masters in Psychology."
"Which one?"
"Rose. She and I are closer than her sisters. Sherry and I are close in age, Krista is the younger one. But Rose and I were always in touch throughout the years. I kept an eye on their brothers while they were in school. They come to Virginia Beach once a year. Or once every two years just to visit with them. We even planned a trip for their brothers to go see them in Seattle the year before I met you." Andy finished with a small chuckle.
Lynn started to slowly run her fingers through Andy's hair and she smiled, "You do so much for your family and they've done so much for you. You do so much for everyone. When was the last time you did anything for yourself?"
"Um, I think going on tour with you. I did it for myself because I always told myself to travel more. When that opportunity came up I knew I had to take it." She leaned back in the pew and looked at everyone talking by the alter. She smiled seeing them smile and just having a good time.
"I knew I had to get away, and I knew I needed a change after Daniel. I thought moving to Georgia was going to be the big change in my life. Turned out it was you." She said looking at her wife.
"Me? Why me?" Lynn asked looking at her confused.
Andy smiled and kissed the back of Lynn's hand, "You're gonna find out at the wedding. Now, come on let's sneak out of here." She said. Without another word she stood up and held Lynn's hand. They took one last look at everyone and thankfully they weren't paying attention.
Lynn giggled as they rushed out of the church. Lynn asked where they were going and Andy just smiled. They reached Andy's truck and she opened the passenger door, "Your chariot awaits." Andy said with a small bow.
Lynn smiled and shook her head. She took Andy's hand and she got into the truck. Andy rushed to the driver side and started up the truck. They put on their seat belts and Andy opened up the visor. She smiled when she pulled out a CD, "Hello old friend." She said with a smile and blew the back of the CD. She put it in the CD player and smiled when the song started to play.
"Where are we going?" Lynn asked as Andy started to drive away from the church.
"You showed me your Boston. Today, I'm showing you my Virginia Beach." Andy said as they came up to the light.
"One of the places does have to wait until tonight after the party. But everything else, I wanna show you where I pretty much grew up. Virginia Beach is a big town, but there's a lot of places not many people know about. My favorite places. Places where I would just go to get away from it all for a while. Also people I want you to meet." Andy said with a smile.
Lynn placed a hand on her leg and smiled, "Always full of surprises."
"I want to surprise you every day."
"You already do."
Just then Andy's phone started to ring. Without thinking Andy gave her phone to Lynn so she could answer it.
"Hello?" Lynn asked into Andy's phone.
"Hey where are you two? Susan is having a panic attack." Ethan said.
"Andy and I are just getting away for a bit. We'll be at dinner." Lynn answered.
Ethan chuckled, "Why am I not surprised. She does this before a big event. She just wants to escape for a bit. I'll let Susan know you two just took a drive and you'll be at dinner."
"Okay, thank you. We'll see you guys soon." Lynn hung up the phone and looked at Andy.
"Let me guess, mom is on a warpath trying to find us."
Lynn let out a soft laugh, "So where to first?"
Andy took her hand in hers and kissed the back of it, "I think it's time to pay a visit to a few people that changed my life."
******************************************************************************
"Thank you." Andy said putting on the visitor's pass and took Lynn's hand in hers.
"This is where you went to high school?" Lynn asked looking around in awe.
Andy chuckled, "This is the new school. We drove passed the old one. On the way back, I'll show my favorite spot on the bleachers. This is actually my first time here. I've only driven passed it and checked out the outside. Gotta say they got some nice digs around here."
They came up to the classroom and smiled when she saw her old math teacher teaching her class. The older blonde woman hadn't changed one bit in her eyes. She knocked on the door and moved out of her old teacher's sight. She heard her tell her students to try and solve the math problem on the board.
Andy and Lynn watched as the door opened and her teacher looked around her eyes widened when she saw Andy. Without a word she wrapped her arms around her and Andy did the same. They stayed like that for a few moments and pulled away from each other.
"Mrs. Smith it's so good to see you again."
"Oh please, you're an adult now call me Rosemary." She said with a smile.
"You'll always be Mrs. Smith to me. This is my wife Lynn. Lynn this is Mrs. Smith my eleventh grade geometry teacher. She never gave up on me." She said with a smile as Lynn held out her hand for Mrs. Smith to shake. Mrs. Smith just smiled and gave Lynn a hug.
When they let go of each other Mrs. Smith smiled, "It's so nice to finally meet you. Why don't you both come in? I'm sure my students would love to ask you some questions. I know some of them are fans of yours. Come on." She said still smiling.
Andy looked at Lynn and she nodded, "Give us a second and we'll be right in."
"Of course." Mrs. Smith walked into her classroom and they heard her say a couple of surprised guests where outside.
"You ready?" Andy asked kissing Lynn's forehead.
"I've played sold out shows, and music festivals. Why am I nervous about high school students?"
Andy chuckled, "No, idea, but just let the words come. We're in this together and we might be doing this with three other classes." Andy took her hand in hers and she was about to lead her into the classroom but Lynn stopped her. Before Andy could ask what was wrong Lynn pulled her close and their lips met.
They pulled away and Lynn sighed, "I just needed a confidence boost." She whispered and rested her head against Andy's.
"I'll give all the confidence you need anytime. Come on let's face this together." Andy smiled and kissed her forehead. She took the lead with Lynn's hand in hers. They walked into the classroom and they heard the students gasp and started to talk in excitement.
Mrs. Smith calmed them down and cleared their throat, "Ladies and gentlemen this is Andrea Hill and her wife Lynn. This may come as a shock to all of you but I taught Andrea when she was a junior at the old high school. Believe or not she was having trouble in my class."
"No way!"
"Unbelievable!"
"Seriously?!"
Andy and Lynn chuckled at the comments. Mrs. Smith and turned her attention back to her students, "I would like your undivided attention for Andrea and Lynn. They will take any of your questions you have so don't be afraid. Since this is during class time, I will not be assigning homework tonight." She said with a smile and the class cheered.
Andy laughed and Mrs. Smith gave her a wink, "Now, class let's quiet down and let them speak. Go ahead and put away your notes and get your questions ready. Andrea, Lynn the floor is yours." She said with a smile, giving them both a gentle squeeze on their arms. She walked over to her desk and sat down.
Andy and Lynn hand in hand stepped forward and Andy spoke first, "Hey everyone. As Mrs. Smith said, I'm Andrea, and this is my wife Lynn. Or I'm actually her wife." She said and the class chuckled.
"We'll take any questions you might have." Andy said with a smile. Almost everyone in the class raised their hands and Lynn smiled. She picked out a young girl with red hair, "How about you first?"
"How did you two meet?" She asked excitedly.
Andy and Lynn chuckled, "Do you want to tell it this time?" Andy asked and Lynn nodded.
Lynn cleared her throat and smiled, " We do meet and greets at all our shows. Just so happened at this show Andrea was there. She met Brian, Alex, and myself. I already knew she was a nervous wreck." The class laughed and when they were quiet again Lynn began to speak.
"So we did our normal little two minute talk, got our picture taken, singed her and her best friend's poster and CD. Then, they were gone. We had this raffle and her best friend won. They go to watch us on stage and to hang out with us on our tour bus. Again, she was nervous, but then she picked up this guitar and started to sing. I was in a trance when I heard her. I couldn't explain it. She had this aurora about her. I could feel the pain in the song and when it was over she broke down."
"Not one of my finest moments." Andy piped in and the class laughed.
"No, it wasn't. Then we found out it was her birthday when the clock hit midnight. We celebrated with cupcakes and had a small cupcake fight. Then, her and I ended up on top of the bus and she pointed out stars. We talked and we just connected. The rest is history." Lynn finished with a smile and gave Andy's hand a small squeeze.
"Okay, who's next?" Andy asked and again everyone raised their hands. She smiled and picked a boy in the back wearing a PVRIS hoodie.
"How about you there sir?" She asked pointing at him.
"A couple of years ago, an article said that you were getting back together with your ex girlfriend. Now another article surfaced saying that you coaxed Lynn into marrying you. How does it make you feel?" He asked.
Andy nodded, "Very good question. I guess the way I can explain it to put in your prospective. You know how rumors get around and it gets around so much, you start believing them?" She asked the class and they all nodded.
"It was kind of like that. The article about me getting back together with an ex girlfriend actually came as a surprise to me. When we found out about it we were actually overseas at the time. Everything my ex girlfriend sent to that magazine was false. The pictures were real, but those pictures were from a long time ago. As for the way it made me feel, I was angry, hurt, upset. It caused a big fight between Lynn and I but we worked through it." Andy smiled and looked at Lynn. Then she turned her attention back to the class.
"As for me coaxing Lynn, I never did. I fell in love with Lynn and asking her to marry me, I surprised myself. We were only together going on ten months and for me that was too soon. But I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I actually thought she was going to say no. With that article coming out I was angry. I mean, there's going to be people out there that will try to discredit you. But always know that you have YOUR truth and that's what matters." Andy finished with a smile.
"Wow." Someone said in awe.
Mrs. Smith stood up and told them they had time for a few more questions before the bell would ring. The hands raised up again and Lynn picked a girl in the middle row, "Go ahead."
"I'm such a huge of you both and I follow you both on social media. But there was this gap for about a year where I didn't see any photos of you two together. A lot of people suspected you broke up. The media was even trying to guess if you were together or not. What happened in that year?" She asked.
"Great question. It was actually because I got an offer to tour with Paramore to be their tour photographer. Then, I was touring with a few other singers, and bands, then back to Paramore. Before I left Lynn and I came to an agreement to not mention anything about our relationship. We wanted to keep it under wraps until I came back." Andy explained.
"We kept in contact with each other and even though we were already married, we decided to have a formal ceremony when Andrea came back. This came as a shock to everyone when we told them. So I took over the wedding planning and Andrea handled the little stuff. Like music, food, and where to have our reception." Lynn said with a smile.
"Okay one more question and I wanna get a picture with you two and the class." Mrs. Smith said and they nodded.
Hands were raised again and Andy picked a boy in the front with blonde hair and a letterman jacket, "Okay, last one."
"How did you both know you were the one for each other?" He asked.
Andy chuckled, "For me it was when Lynn slapped me. We weren't officially together and that's when I knew. Now before you ask why she slapped me. We had a little situation and I ran out. I didn't bring my phone and she was worried. She slapped me out of fear and anger. But that's when I knew I wanted to marry her."
"And Lynn what about you?" The boy asked.
"I think it was when I saw her connecting with my family. Especially with my brother and my dad. Then, with my younger cousins. It was like she was a missing piece of the puzzle that I've been trying to put together for so long. But when we met the first time we just had this connection. Our eyes locked and I knew she was going to be part of my life some how some way. I was scared because of my past relationship. I didn't know if I could open my heart again and then she came into my life and opened me back up." Lynn smiled and kissed Andy's cheek.
The class awed and Mrs. Smith stood up and told them to gather with her students so she could take a picture. The two women walked over to the students and they gathered around them. Once everyone was settled Mrs. Smith snapped a couple of pictures on her cell phone and smiled. Then, the students started to ask for their autographs. The two women smiled and started to sign notebooks, or pieces of paper, anything the students gave them. They took some pictures with them and then the class bell rang.
They got out of their way and stood by Mrs. Smith. They shook all their hands and even gave a few hugs. Once everyone was out Mrs. Smith turned to them, "Thank you two for coming. I'm sure you've made their day. Are you going to be around here for a while?"
Andy nodded, "Yeah, wanted to introduce Lynn to a few more teachers. I had to come to you first. You were the first teacher that didn't give up on me when I was having trouble."
Mrs. Smith blinked back her tears and gave her a hug, "It was so good to see you. Don't be a stranger." She said with a smile and when they let go she hugged Lynn, "It was so nice to meet you. I'm glad you came into her life."
"I'm glad she came into mine." Lynn whispered. They let go of each other and said their byes. The two women walked into the hallway and it was busy with students going to their next class.
"Where to next?" Lynn asked as they started to walk down the halls getting lost in the crowd.
"How about the teacher that told me to pursue writing?" Andy asked with a smile.
"Let's go." Lynn said with a smile and kissed the back of her hand.
***********************************************************************************
"Okay, final stop. " Andy said with a smile stopping in front of the auditorium.
"I'm still trying to get over the fact you were in theatre class. English, History, and P.E. I get, but theatre? Babe, this is so weird." Lynn said with a chuckle.
"Well, you know I have great stage presence?" She asked and Lynn nodded.
"Let me introduce you to the teacher that helped me get over my stage fright." She said as she opened the door and led her in. They walked up the small incline and Andy could hear the deep Southern accent of her teacher. The accent she would never forget. Once they were able to see she smiled seeing an older lady with brown shoulder length hair giving stage directions to her students.
"Okay, now the monk." The lady said and Andy started to quietly laugh.
"Did you do this play?" Lynn asked.
Andy nodded, "When I was in the tenth grade we put on this play four times two days in a row. I played the part of the monk. I had to do this chant and we thought it would be funny if I smacked my head on this board and broke it. So I went out and bought these styrofoam boards. Cut them up, painted them, and used them for the plays. My senior year, I directed. Part of my final project. Come on let's get a closer look." She took Lynn's hand in hers and they quietly walked further in.
Andy directed her to one of the back rows and they sat down to watch the rehearsal. No one knew they were there and her drama teacher stood up shaking her head.
"Callie, you have to be more monotone in your chant. Okay, let's try again." She turned around and saw two people sitting in the back. It was too dark to see so she called out to them.
"Can I help you?" She asked. Andy and Lynn stood up. Lynn took hold of Andy's hand as they walked down the aisle.
"After all these years you still can't find the perfect monk." Andy said with a smile as she saw her former teacher's eyes widen. She rushed up to Andy and gave her a hug.
"I can't believe it's you! Oh my Lord! I haven't seen you since the forensics meet before you moved. It's so good to see you!"
"It's good to see you too Mrs. Evans, but I need to breathe." Andy struggled to get out.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I'm just excited. What are you doing here?" Mrs. Evans asked letting go of Andy but keeping her hands on her arms.
"Just wanted to see my old teachers, and introduce my wife to those that inspired me." She smiled turning to Lynn.
"Mrs. Evans, this is my wife Lynn. Lynn, Mrs. Evans. The teacher that taught me I can command a room with just my presence."
Mrs. Evans smiled and gently touched Lynn's cheeks, "It's so nice to meet you." She said before giving her a hug. The two let go and Mrs. Evans told her students to come off the stage and sit down in the seats. When they all got settled she asked for the house lights to come up and they did.
"Okay everyone we're going to cut today a little short because we have surprise guests. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Andrea Hill and her wife Lynn. I taught Andrea in this very same class for three years. She was the original monk in this play, and she was also the director her senior year for the same play." Mrs. Evans explained.
"You taught Andrea?!" Someone said and Mrs. Evans nodded.
"I sure did. She was also the first co-captain of the very first forensics team. She got a letter and pin for it." Mrs. Evans added.
"You mean to tell she paved the way for the team?" Someone else asked.
"I wouldn't say that. I mean I was just there at every meeting and I didn't know I was a captain until the yearbook came out." Andy told them with a smile.
"Now she's a photographer, an amazing one. As well as a great musician." Lynn added giving Andy's hand gently squeeze.
"Why don't you both take some questions?" Mrs. Evans asked. Andy looked at Lynn and she smiled with a nod.
"Sure, we've been answering them all day. Been loving it so far." Andy said with a smile.
"Okay, everyone let's ask some questions and we'll call it a day." Mrs. Evans said as she took a seat in the front row. Everyone's hands raised and Lynn picked a boy in the second row.
"Go ahead." She said with a smile.
"I love you guys. How did you know you wanted to do what you're doing now?" He asked.
"Good question. For me I always knew I wanted to do something with music. Whether it be a songwriter, singer, or just playing guitar in a band. Photography was just a hobby. I also love to write. I wanted to become a writer. I still write to this day. There's going to be times where you don't know what you want to be when you grow up. When you have a plan sometimes it doesn't turn out the way you wanted it too. I was working in the restaurant business for a long time. Then, I had the opportunity to be the PVRIS tour photographer and I took it. That opened doors to a lot of opportunities." Andy said.
"Lynn?" The boy asked.
"I guess it was when I was younger, I used to steal my brother's guitar and just play around with it. I was in band when I was in high school and I knew I just wanted to do something with it. I was planning on going to art school, but two weeks before I had to leave, I decided to make music. I met Brian and Alex and we just clicked. Then, Justin came along and we created this family that just wanted to make music. Not to make money or get fame, but to just do something that we love and to share it with the world." Lynn told them with a smile.
More hands were raised and Lynn picked a girl in the second row, "How about you?"
"First of all I just wanna say Lynn you have been a role model for me for a long time. I love you!"
Lynn gave her a smile, "Thank you! I love you too! I love all of you!" She said and Andy smiled.
"But my question is for Andrea. Have you thought about going into acting at all? Since you took theatre class when you were in high school?" She asked.
"Honestly I did play with the idea. Spoiler alert your midterm is a two minute monologue." She said with a smile, giving a wink to Mrs. Evans.
"Anyway, I've done music videos where I do have to act out a part. But I'm still me. I'm more of behind the camera kind of person. I love having a vision and bringing it to life. I was actually going to direct my first music video but I ended up getting injured and had to postpone it. But every music video I was in I had some part of directing it in some way." Andy explained.
When they raised their hands Lynn picked a girl that seemed really shy, "Go ahead sweetie." She stood up and her black hair covered half of her face.
Andy smiled thinking she reminded her of herself when she was in high school, "Before you ask a question, can I ask you something?" She asked and the girl nodded. Andy smiled and walked up to her and held out her hand for her to take.
She was hesitant at first and then she took Andy's hand. Andy led her to the steps that led up to the stage and smiled. "Could you dim down the house lights and leave center stage lit up?" She called out and the lights changed. She gave the person a thumbs up and turned her attention back to the young girl.
"Okay, here's my question for you." Andy rested her hands on her knees so she could be eye level with her. She gave her a smile and made eye contact with her.
"Do you feel like no one gets you?" She asked and the girl's eyes widened and she nodded. Lynn looked up at the stage and then found a seat next to Mrs. Evans.
"This girl has been so quiet in my class since the beginning of the year. I can't get her to talk. You two turn up and she has a question for you both. I saw her binder the other day, and there's a print out picture of one Andrea's photos. It's the moon shining down on branches that have no leaves on them. It's so dark, and I get worried about her sometimes." Mrs. Evans told Lynn.
"Andrea has a way with people maybe she can break through to her." Lynn said with a smile.
Back on the stage Andy nodded and kept her smile, "What's your name?"
"Mila," the young girl said in a quiet voice.
"Well, it's nice to meet you Mila. Thank you for answering my questions. Now what can I answer for you?" Andy said standing straight up. Mila started to play with her hands and she took in a deep breath and let it out.
"My question is, were you ever made fun of in school?" She asked quietly. Andy heard some students giggle and even heard some say that she was just so weird.
"Hold that thought Mila, I wanna say something to your classmates." She gave Mila's arm a gentle squeeze and walked towards the class until she was close to the edge of the stage.
"I need all of you to be VERY truthful for me right now." Andy said trying to keep her voice calm.
"How many of you think Mila is weird and different?" Andy saw most of the class raise their hands and she tried to hold back her scoff.
"Okay, what makes her different or weird?" She asked the class.
"She wears black like every day!"
"Her hair is always covering half her face!"
"Even when it's hot out she still wears long sleeves!"
"She listens to depressing music!"
Andy held up her hands, "Okay, okay, okay. I get it. But would you all believe that I used to be like Mila when I was a freshman in high school?"
"I doubt it!" Andy heard someone say and the class laughed But the laughter quickly died down when Andy crossed her arms and her face was expressionless.
"What you all see and judge about Mila is on the outside. You don't know what's going on with her on the inside. Have ANY of you even TRIED to get to know her?" Andy asked and no one answered her question.
Andy started to pace on the stage and Mrs. Evans smiled, "She still knows how to command a room." She whispered and Lynn looked up at Andy with a proud smile.
"When I started high school, I had NO friends. All the friends I had I met overseas. I moved around a lot as a kid. All my friends that I wanted to start high school with I couldn't because I had to move. For six months I didn't have ANY friends. Sure I had the kids in my neighborhood but we didn't have any classes together. I was bullied and made fun of because I was the quiet kid.
I listened to a lot of depressing music, I work black all the time. No one wanted to talk to me. Until one day in my English class I was reading a book and the person behind mentioned the author. She told me that she read the book and offered to lend me the next one. After that we struck up a friendship. All of sudden I slowly started to make friends again because one person, just one, struck up a conversation with me." Andy looked at all the students making sure she looked at each of them in the eye.
"You never know what's going on inside someone's head. Words hurt. They do, trust me I know first hand. High school is hard. Not because of the classes you take, but because there's people around, spreading rumors, knocking down books someone is carrying, or whispering behind someone's back. Just because someone isn't into the mainstream doesn't mean they're different. We're all unique in some way. Also," Andy turned to Mila and held out her hand for her to take.
Mila was hesitant at first, but then slowly started to make her way to Andy. She took her hand and Andy smiled at her. She turned her attention back to the class and cleared her throat.
"Everyone is weird in their own way. Me for example every Sunday morning after I brush my teeth I have to have a glass of orange juice. Don't ask me why. I just do. I've been like that every since I could remember. We all have our little quirks and that's one of mine." Andy turned to Mila and smiled.
She kneeled down on her good knee and took the other girl's hand in hers, "Don't ever be afraid to be different. Don't ever think you have to fit in. Don't ever think you're not good enough. You are who you are. Don't let anyone change you. You know you who are and that's all that matters. One day you might change some one's life, you never know. We all want to change the world, we all want to inspire. One day Mila, you will do just that." Andy said smiling and Mila wrapped her arms around her. Andy hugged her tightly for a few moments and then let her go.
"To answer your question I was made fun of in school. But here I am stronger than ever. You're going to do great things Mila." Andy stood up slowly and turned back to the class.
"All of you are going to do great things. But keep in mind what I said today. I hope today you all learned something. So please be kind to one another and please don't let someone's appearance cause you to judge them." Andy finished and the students erupted in a loud applause and cheers. Andy led Mila off the stage and Mrs. Evans asked for the house lights to be turned back on. Andy and Mila stood in front of Lynn.
Lynn smiled and gave Mila a hug when she let go of her she smiled, "You're beautiful and smart. Don't let anything get to you. Stay after class Andy and I want to give you something." Lynn said and Mila smiled. Mrs. Evans stood up and told all of them to gather on the stage because she wanted to get a picture.
Everyone gathered on the stage and when they were settled Mrs. Evans took out her phone and took a few pictures. When she said she got the right picture she thanked them. Andy and Lynn smiled and thanked the students for their questions and for listening to Andy's speech. Then they all rushed off so they could get autographs.
Andy and Lynn repeated what they had been doing most of their visit and then the final bell rang. The students gathered up their belongings and started to make their way out of the auditorium. Mila stayed behind like they asked her to. Lynn and Andy came up to her giving her an envelope.
"We know it's short notice, but Andrea had this on her like she had a plan." Lynn said as Mila slowly took the envelope.
They watched as she opened it and read what was inside, "This is a wedding invitation." Mila said looking back up at them.
Andy nodded, "Sure is. I had this idea in mind on my way here. I wanted to find a student that I connected with. You can bring whoever you want and we won't hold it against you if you don't want to come. Also," Andy handed her a small piece of paper.
"This is my phone number. Just in case you ever need anyone to talk to. Shoot me a text or call me. If I don't answer leave me a voicemail. I'll get back to you, I promise. I've been in your shoes before. I didn't have anyone to reach out to for a long time. It's hard, but know that you have a friend in me." Andy said.
"And in me. We'll both be there for you anytime." Lynn said with a smile. Mila sniffled and quickly wiped the tears running down her cheeks.
"I didn't think anyone would care." Mila said softly. Mrs. Evans came up to her and put her arm around her shoulders.
"Mila, I care. Andrea and Lynn care. I'm sure your family cares too." Mrs. Evans said in a soft tone.
Mila shook her head, "I'm in a foster home. I never met my real family."
The three women looked at each other then back at Mila. They didn't know what to say until Lynn knelt down and smiled up at Mila, "Sometimes you create a family around you. You may not know who your real family is, but one day you'll have one. Keep your head up, and follow your dreams no matter how small. Believe in yourself, because I believe in you."
Mila hugged Lynn again and Mrs. Evans pulled Andy aside, "I didn't know she was in foster care. I'll be sure to keep an eye on her and make sure she's okay."
Andy nodded, "Thank you. I'm sure she could use someone else to look up to, just like I did when I was in your class."
"It was so good to see you. I'm glad you came in today to talk to my class. I hope what you said left an impression on them."
"I hope so too. It was good to see you again Mrs. Evans. I hope to be around a little more." She gave her former teacher a hug and Mrs. Evans returned it. After a few moments they went back over to Lynn and Mila. The two were taking a picture together. After the picture Mila said she had to catch her bus. Andy and Lynn gave her one more hug and then she was off.
It was time for them to leave and once again Mrs. Evans gave her former student a hug and told her to come visit her soon. She also gave Lynn a hug telling her it was nice to meet her. Once they said their byes, Andy and Lynn held hands as they walked out of the auditorium.
They dodged the students and smiled watching them rush out of the school ready to go home. They were stopped a few times with some students recognizing them. When the hallways were cleared out Andy found a locker and smiled.
"Looks like someone loves PVRIS." Andy said seeing the PVRIS stickers plastered all over it.
"I wonder who's locker this is." Lynn said as she gently touched the locker.
"Come on, let's get out of here. Wanna grab something to eat and I'll take you to our next stop?" Andy asked putting her arm around Lynn's shoulders, pulling her close.
"I'm starving. Dinner feels like a million hours from now."
Andy chuckled as they walked out of the high school. It was nice seeing her former teachers again. A few more stops and then they would have to go to Ynot for their rehearsal dinner.
*********************************************************************************
"So this is your old high school?" Lynn asked wiping her mouth with a napkin.
Andy nodded crumbling up her wrapper and putting in the bag, "Sure is. This spot is where I would come to when I was having a hard time with life. Sometimes I would walk the track just to think."
"Is this the same spot you and Vicki would talk?" Lynn asked.
Andy shook her head. She turned and pointed a few rows up, "Right up there is where Vicki and I talked for hours. She thought that was my spot, but it wasn't. It was right here. In the middle, the center of everything." Andy turned back to Lynn and smiled.
"I'm glad you're showing me this side of you." Lynn said gently touching Andy's cheek.
"Like I said, you showed me your Boston. I wanted to show you my Virginia Beach. You know, I realized when I was in Vermont for a while, I was only three hours away from Boston."
"How long ago was this?"
"Hmmmm, around two thousand thirteen, I think? Maybe fourteen. If I had known that Warped Tour came through Connecticut, I would have gone and saw you and the guys. But I had no idea at the time." Andy told her with a smile.
"You would have to get past Alexa at that point." Lynn said with a chuckle.
Andy smiled and took a sip of her drink. She looked around as the gentle breeze came through. She spent so many days after school just sitting on these bleachers to just think about her next move. Or just to sit and think about life. She never would have guessed she would be here with the woman she's going to spend the rest of her life with.
Going down memory with Lynn was something she didn't know she needed. She hoped one day she would be able to do this with her children. One day show them where she grew up, where Lynn grew up. There was one place she still had yet to go back to. She just couldn't bring herself to do it for a long time. She turned to Lynn and took her hand in hers.
"I just had a thought." Andy said really looking at Lynn.
"What's that?" Lynn asked turning to her.
"There's one other place that holds a special meaning to me, I just couldn't bring myself to go back because of all the memories. It was just painful. But I feel like with you coming with me I'll be able to face this place again. So how would you feel about a second honeymoon, before the next part of our life starts?" Andy asked.
"What did you have in mind?" Lynn asked with a smile.
"I want to take you to Okinawa. I spent the best years of my life there, and I want to share it with you. Sure, some of the memories are painful because that's where I met my best friends, but I also had an amazing time there. It's the one place where I wished I was able to stay longer. But I couldn't. So what do you say? One last big adventure before we fully settle down." Andy asked looking at Lynn with hopeful eyes.
Lynn smiled and put another hand on top of theirs and smiled, "I would love to. I've been to Tokyo, but never Okinawa. It's something new and exciting. I would love to see some more of the life you had before me."
Andy smiled and leaned in. Their lips met tenderly and then they pulled away from each other. Lynn was about to say something when someone called up to them. They looked and saw a security guard telling them that they had to get going. He was about to lock the gate. Andy took a closer look and smiled.
"Mr. Nease?! Is that you?!" Andy called out to him.
"Who wants to know?!" He called back.
Andy looked at Lynn with a big smile. They gathered up their things and Andy rushed down the bleachers with Lynn close behind. They threw away their trash in a nearby trash can and came closer to the security guard.
Andy smiled when she saw his smile, "As I live and breathe!" He said rushing up to her and gave her a tight hug. They pulled away from each other and he gently touched her cheek.
"Little Miss Andrea all grown up!" The older man said with a smile.
"I thought you retired after I graduated."
He laughed and shook his head, "I did, but I didn't know what to do with myself so I asked for my job back."
"Always the workaholic. Mr. Nease, this is my wife Lynn." Andy said putting her hand gently on Lynn's back. Mr. Nease smiled and kissed the back of Lynn's hand.
"Never thought I would see the day Andrea Hill would settle down. It's so wonderful to meet you!." He said with a smile and let go of Lynn's hand.
"What brings you around these parts?" He asked as they slowly started to walk towards the gate.
"Was in town. Went to see the new high school. Introduced Lynn to some of my favorite teachers. Got to talk to their students. Just wanted to show her some of my old stomping grounds." Andy told him with a smile.
"I'll never forget the day I saw you sitting there. Feels as if it was just yesterday. Found you talking to yourself." He said giving a gentle pat on Andy's back.
"How are you doing? Really?" He asked looking at her with a concerned look.
"I'm doing well. I still have my bad days, but it gets better. Slowly, but it does get better." Andy answered giving him a reassuring smile.
"Still having nightmares?" He asked.
"You know about her nightmares? How long have they been going on?" Lynn asked and the three of them stopped on the track.
"I found out about them around her sophomore year. Noticed she was really tired one day when I stepped into her English class. Her head was down and she wasn't paying attention. I found it rather odd since English was her favorite subject. Anyway, after school I found her on the bleachers. Just sat in silence for about an hour or two and she opened up about them. Suggested she see someone, but she wanted to figure it out all on her own. So let me ask you again, how are your nightmares?" He finished.
Andy shrugged, "I get them still. But not every night. They come and go. Ethan and Lynn have been a big help calming me down. Choked Ethan a few times, but he doesn't panic which is good."
"Still the same situations?" He asked.
Andy nodded, "Yeah, can't save those I love no matter how hard I try. Each time is different, but I can't seem to save them."
Mr. Nease nodded, "When was the last bad one?"
Andy thought for a moment, "How bad are we talking?" She asked.
"Did you stop breathing?" Mr. Nease asked crossing his arms.
"I think when I was on tour with Paramore the first time. It was in the middle of the tour and Zac woke me up. I saw him, Taylor, and Hayley looking at me with worried looks. That's when they told me that I wasn't breathing. I guess I must have fell out of my bunk, or something. I had a small one back in Boston when I found out I was getting time off. Nothing too crazy with that one." Andy explained.
Mr. Nease looked at Lynn and gave her a warm smile, "She's a handful. Are you sure you want to spend the rest of your life with her?" He joked.
Lynn gave out a soft laugh and took Andy's hand in hers, "She's been real with me from the very start. There's still some things she hasn't talk to me about and that's okay. We have the rest of our lives to get to know each other even more. She surprises me every day, and I couldn't imagine myself with anyone else."
He gently touched her arm and gave it a gentle squeeze, "I think you're the breath of fresh air she always talked about over the years. As much as I want to keep catching up, I do have to get this gate closed so I can call it a day. Andrea it was really great seeing you." He smiled giving her a tight hug.
"And Ms. Lynn, it was an honor meeting you. Make sure she stays in line. If she ever steps out, come find me and I'll set her right. She always said once she's married divorce is not an option." He too gave her a tight hug.
The two waved bye to him and they made their way to Andy's truck. She opened the door for Lynn and helped her inside. Once Lynn was settled she closed the door and took one last look at Mr. Nease. She smiled as she watched him close the gate to the track and then went around the truck to the driver side. She got in and they put on their seat belts. She started the truck up and slowly started to pull out of the parking lot.
She let out a sigh and leaned back in her seat. She felt Lynn's hand on her thigh and she smiled. She took her hand in hers and kissed the back of it. Andy drove onto the main road and the two sat in comfortable silence. The music from the CD playing softly. Andy thought about the times she traveled down this road. So many memories and so many experiences along the way. She was so happy she was able to share this with Lynn. She couldn't wait to share more.
**********************************************************************************
"So where did she whisk off to this time?" Angel asked Lynn with a smile.
Lynn returned her smile and looked over at Andy. She was talking with her old co workers laughing and joking around with them. Seeing Andy smile and laugh was all she wanted. Just Andy to be carefree. A loud commotion came from them and Andy fell out of her seat laughing so hard. Clint shook his head and started to call them all assholes.
Lynn shook her head and turned back to Angel, "She showed me her hometown. Well, according to her she spent most of her life here. I met some of her teachers, we talked to some students. Showed me the house she grew up in. Her first apartment, places she goes to when she needed a get away. She said she has one more place to show me, but it would have to wait until later tonight."
"My sister, always the romantic." Wendy said coming up to them and sitting down next to Lynn.
"Just a few more days. Are you nervous?" Angel asked.
Lynn shook her head, "No, I mean we did it already. Only this time it will be in front of our family and friends. No big deal. Same thing all over again with a few changes."
"YOU ASSHOLE!" Andy yelled and started to laugh really hard.
Wendy shook her head, "I swear every time they get together, they're always roasting each other. Glad mom and dad took the kids home an hour ago.
"It's like the old days all over again." Juliet said coming towards them.
"I swear when Andy, Clint, and Brandon would close it was like they weren't getting anything done. But some how some way they would be done before us." Wendy said shaking her head watching her sister interact with her friends.
Alex, Justin, and Brian came up to them and shook their heads. They each took a seat and smiled.
"Where are your cousins? Like all of them?" Alex asked.
"They wanted to do some sightseeing. Get to know each other and exchange Andy stories. Plus I think Sherry and Rose got them all tickets to see a play." Wendy explained.
"Look at them, it's like she never left." Juliet said with a smile as they watched the group.
"Bro, I had to kick you off that station for three fucking weeks 'cause you couldn't handle it. You come back from another store thinking you were hot shit and you DROWNED so bad. Then, you couldn't handle the other two stations when Trey and I took over." Andy laughed patting Ethan on the back.
"Oh, shut up! You and you're tight shirts! 'Oh look at me I'm Andy, I can carry two mats at once. Look at my big ass muscles.'" Ethan said standing up flexing like he was in a body builder show.
"Or how about the time I smacked the plastic wrap away from you 'cause you wouldn't talk to me." Clint said shaking his head.
"Okay, first of all, I was getting hit hard on every station. Second of all we JUST had a meeting about being aware and helping each other out. You can Chino were goofing around on your phones not caring." Andy said pointing her finger at him.
"Okay, okay, okay. But I have gotten better. After that night I realized I should have been a better manager that night." Clint said with a smile.
"But NO ONE will ever forget...." Ethan started to say and they all looked at each other.
"MARANRIA ANDY!" They all yelled.
"FUCK YOU GUYS!" Andy yelled back and they all started to laugh again.
When they all calmed down Cody put his hand on her shoulder and smiled, "I sure do miss you with us. I always loved working with you. I had this sense of relief when I would see you on the schedule and I would be working the same day." Everyone nodded their heads in agreement.
"At first I thought you weren't gonna be able to hack it. Then, one day you come in and just blew us all away. It was like you did this one eighty and showed us just how amazing you are." Michael said giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
"When we found out you were leaving, I was so upset. I couldn't focus on work for about a week. You and I started at the same time and we had that newbie bond. It's just not the same without you here." Trey said with a sad smile.
"I'll never forget the day I started everyone was telling me not to piss you off. I thought it was a joke and then I saw you yell at someone. Told myself I wouldn't do it. Then, one night during a crazy rush, you yelled at me. I couldn't believe it. It was one of the scariest moments of my life." Brandon said smiling, then taking a sip of his drink.
"Can you just come back for a few weeks? This new prep guy, and new line cook can't handle it. It's been four months and they still have no clue what they're doing." Brendan said shaking his head.
Andy chuckled, "You guys became my family. Sure I have brothers now, but y'all are my brothers, and forever will be. This place is like a second home. To all of us. Like Antony said, we spend more time with each other than we do our own families-"
"And that's the truth."
They all turned to see a smiling Antony standing by the door of the back room. They all smiled and stood up. He shook their hands and he came up to Andy and put his hands on her shoulders.
"You became a part of our lives for five years. You gave five years of your life to us. But you will always be with us no matter where you go. We are all proud of you. I am proud of you. You came a long way and you surprised us time and time again. Once you're part of the Ynot family, you're always part of the Ynot family." He pulled her in for a hug and she returned it.
When they pulled away from each other, she saw her Uncle Chris walk into the room. He had a smile on his face and he stood next to Antony.
"I thought you left." Andy said with a confused look.
"Not really. Antony and I have been talking the last few days and we have something we would like to discuss with you. Just the three of us." Chris said with a twinkle in his eye.
"Can you guys give us a few minutes? Clear everyone out. There's some things we would like to talk to Andy about in private." Antony said and the others nodded.
Ethan walked over to where Lynn and everyone else was and told them they had to clear the room. They asked why but Ethan just shook his head. They followed him out and he closed the door behind them. He watched for a moment as he saw the three of them sit in one of the booths.
He turned his back and joined the others. All of them asking what was going on. Again he just shook his head. Clint and Michael put some tables together so they could all sit together. Once everything was sorted they all sat down and noticed no one was at the head of the table.
"Seriously? Why do we always do this?" Alex asked shaking his head smiling.
"What? Saving the head of the table for Andy?" Brian asked and he nodded.
"You know one of these days someone is gonna sit there and it's gonna be so weird. Should someone try it?" Angel asked and everyone looked at each other. Ethan stood up and went to the head of the table. He took a seat and they all looked at him.
"This seems weird doesn't it?" He asked.
Everyone nodded their heads and all agreed. He laughed standing up and took his seat next to Alex. Then he looked around the table and smiled.
"So this is the entire wedding party. Well, minus Brittany, and we have some of Andy's old co workers here. That's the only difference." David said with a smile.
"Any word about Taylor? I know Melissa has been working on the situation." Michael asked.
"I heard from her today. Taylor wants to settle this out of court, but we all know Andy isn't going to have that. I mean this magazine is so full of shit. I can't believe Taylor said that when Andy was away from Lynn for a year it was because she needed time to think." Brian said with a scoff.
"Andy didn't want to leave. She really didn't, but I told her she couldn't pass this up, and it would open a lot of doors for her." Lynn said and everyone looked at her surprised.
"What do you mean she didn't want to leave?" Justin asked.
Lynn was just about to explain everything, but they heard voices coming from the back room. They all turned and saw the three standing there and they shook hands. They walked over the group and stood in front of them.
"Okay guys Chris and I are heading out. We'll see you Saturday." Antony said with a smile. With one more hand shake with Andy they both left. Andy rubbed her face in her hands and let out a long sigh.
She took the seat at the head of the table and Alex mentioned that everything seemed right. They all chuckled and then turned to Andy waiting for her to tell them what had just happened.
"What's going on?" Lynn asked taking her hand in hers. Andy shook her head not knowing what to say at first. She took a moment to collect her thoughts and looked around at everyone.
"Well, a few days ago I brought up this idea for my Uncle and for Antony to combine their styles of food. I guess they were talking since then. Turns out they wanna give it a trial run." Andy started to explain.
"That's great!" Michael said.
"When are they going to start?" Cody asked.
"Are they going to build it here?" Clint asked.
Andy held up her hand and they quieted down, "Turns out they want to open one out of state. Just to see what kind of crowd it would bring in."
"How far out of state?" Wendy asked.
"Boston." Andy told them.
"That's awesome! So are you going to be going there when it opens up?" Justin asked.
"More than likely. They said they wanted to give Lynn and I a wedding present." Andy said giving Lynn's hand a gentle squeeze.
"Like what? Putting your 'Andy Mac' on the menu?" Brandon asked and they chuckled.
"Well that, and they want Lynn and I to be owners."
