"I'm in way too deep again,
I've forgotten how to swim.
I can't tell which way is up or down,
Save me before I drown."

"So..."
"So..." Kelly mocked innocently into the phone.
"You want to tell me why I got a text from Ashley at three in the morning saying that you are hopeless?"
"Well, first off, she didn't realize you were in L.A., even though I told her so, so she didn't factor in the time difference from New York, and she says she's sorry about that."
"I bet," Carrie laughed softly.
"And I fell."
"You fell?" Carrie smiled at the sound of a pout in her voice.
"Yea, and it hurt."
"Aw, what happened?"
"I tripped on the sidewalk."
"Were you trying to drink your tea and walk at the same time again?"
"Maybe..."
"Kell..." Carrie giggled.
"Don't laugh, it hurt," Kelly felt her pout deepened.
"Ok, ok, I'm sorry. How bad is it?"
"My knee's all banged up. That's why Ashley texted you. She was pissed because I was supposed to be wearing this short dress thingy for the morning show this morning."
"I bet you were happy."
"Can't say I was all that disappointed," she smiled.
Carrie laughed, "Well, you looked amazing in those jeans, so tell Ashley she had nothing to fuss about."
"You watched?"
"You ask that every day. Of course I watched. You're my girl. "
Kelly's smile grew, "Yea, well, good. You'd better watch...or else."
"Or else what?"
"I don't know. I'd threaten no sex, but that'd be just as hard on me as it would be on you."
"True. You couldn't survive without it."
Kelly laughed.
"So, honestly, how's the knee?"
"Pretty ugly," Kelly nodded, looking down at her leg. "There's already a nasty looking bruise."
"It's not swollen or anything, though? Do you think you should have a doctor look at it?"
"No, no, it's not that bad. Hurt my pride worse than anything else."
"What pride?" Carrie teased.
"Hey, be nice, I'm hurt, remember?"
"I'm sorry. I'll be nice. So how are things with the label? Have they sent you any songs today?"
"No, I'm still waiting. I think they're backing off a little since I decided to promote this album."
"Yea, but you don't really want them to back off...not time wise at least, right?"
"Yea, but it is nice to not have to listen to their nagging."
"Very true. What about Kate? Any luck with that?"
"No, and I'm seriously thinking of tying her down and threatening her in order to make her talk."
"Why? What happened?"
"Well, I was getting ready in my dressing room this morning, and she came in, and I seriously thought that she was about to finally talk, you know? But Ashley was in there, and Kate kinda seemed to second guess herself, so instead she just hung out with us for a little bit. Then Jay came in, and naturally he got all excited because Kate was there so he went stand beside her and put his arm around her and kissed her cheek, and I swear, Care, it honestly looked like Kate was about to cry when he did that. And then she just made up some excuse about needing to change her shoes or something and hurried out."
"I don't know what to tell you," Carrie admitted.
"I love the girl, I do, but I swear, it's really starting to make me kinda angry. I mean, Jay really seems to like her a lot, and it's just like she could care less."
"You know Kate way better than I do. Would she do something like that?"
"No, that's just it, and that's the only thing keeping me from getting pissed at her and going off," Kelly stretched out on the hotel room bed with a sigh. They had rented a few rooms to give everyone a chance to take a nap and get a little rest since they'd been going non stop for five days now. Squeezing two months worth of promo into a week and a half seemed like a fun idea at first, but not so much once it was put into effect.
"You sound like you could use a break."
"I'm ok."
"Not even a little relaxing?"
Kelly bit her lip as her mind wondered off to the night before when Carrie had called after a long day of meetings in L.A. with record executives, and she offered to help relax the country girl. She drew in a sharp breath as she straightened her leg.
"You ok?"
"Yea, just my knee. So...what are you doing?"
"Wishing I were over there so I could kiss it and make it better."
"Oh yea?" Kelly felt her heart start to speed up as Carrie's voice softened to a whisper in her ear.
"Yea...I'd place soft kisses all the way around it, and then slowly start to kiss my way up your thigh..."
Kelly licked her lips in anticipation, her hand resting on her stomach while Carrie continued to explain exactly what she would be doing to her if she would've been there with her. Her eyes closed as she thought about just how great Carrie's lips felt against her skin. They shot open again at the sound of someone knocking on her door. "You've gotta be shitting me," she groaned.
"What's wrong?" Carrie asked, confused.
"Someone's here," Kelly sighed, climbing off the bed and walking to the door. She looked through the peep hole. "It's Kate."
"You know, this isn't the first time she's interrupted our alone time phone festivities, maybe we should start charging a fee or something. Time is money, people."
Kelly laughed softly as she opened the door. "Hey."
"Hey..." Kate shifted nervously, her eyes an aching red. "Oh...I'm sorry...I-I didn't know you were busy. I'll come back later."
"No, it's ok," Kelly replied quickly, waving her in.
"No, I just...sorry...is that Carrie? Tell her I'm really sorry for interrupting..."
"No, seriously, it's ok. Come in."
"No, it's nothing. I just wanted to talk, but it's no big deal, it can wait..."
"Tell her that she sure as hell better talk or else I'll kick her butt for interrupting me and my happy time," Carrie instructed through the phone.
"Carrie says it's ok," Kelly assured. "So come in...please."
Kate allowed Kelly to tug her into the room, closing the door behind them.
"I'll talk to you later, ok Care?" Kelly led the way further into the hotel room.
"Ok, good luck with her," Carrie nodded.
"Love you."
"Love you too. Call me after your thing tonight?"
"Deal," Kelly agreed, sitting back on her bed. "Bye Care."
"Bye baby...take care of your knee."
"I will," Kelly promised before hanging up the phone after one more goodbye. She watched as Kate stood before her, wringing her hands. "So..."
"I really am sorry for interrupting," Kate repeated.
"It's ok," Kelly insisted.
She chewed on her bottom lip.
"Come see, girlie," Kelly motioned her over. She reached out as Kate walked to her side of the bed and pulled her down onto her lap. Her brows furrowed as she got comfortable, "Have you lost weight?"
"A little," she nodded.
"You and Carrie, man...y'all suck."
Kate laughed softly.
"So what's going on?" Kelly asked gently, feeling her starting to relax a little. "What's gotten you so upset?"
"I need to tell you something, and you're probably going to get really mad."
"I doubt it, but ok, what do you need to tell me?"
"I just broke up with Jason..."
"Was it something he did? Was he being a jerk about y'alls lack of make out time again? I can totally tell him off for you if you want," Kelly offered, feeling any anger that had started to form with the girl earlier quickly washing away at the sight of how lost the other blonde looked at that moment.
Kate shook her head, "No, no, he was really sweet."
"Then what happened?"
"I don't have feelings for him."
"Ok, well, that's ok," Kelly nodded, rubbing her arm comfortingly. "You can't help that...was there something in particular that made you change your mind?"
Kate's bottom lip trembled slightly as tears started to form in her eyes.
"Hey..." Kelly soothed, reaching up to brush them away. "It's ok. I'm not mad, I promise. You know you can tell me anything."
"I-I never liked him in the first place," Kate admitted softly.
Kelly's head tilted, "I don't...I don't understand...if you never liked him, why would you agree to go out with him?"
Kate started to cry harder.
Kelly brushed those tears away as well, "Come on now, it's ok. Shh..."
"I'm so sorry."
"It's ok," Kelly repeated.
"No it's not, you're mad. You probably hate me now."
"Kate...hey...Kate, look at me..." she took her chin gently, making the backup singer look at her. "Look at me, ok? I'm not mad, I promise, and I could never hate you."
"How can you not be mad? He's your brother."
"I'm upset," Kelly allowed. "But I'm not mad. I'm just...I'm a little confused, and seriously worried about you."
Kate's eyes shone as more tears formed.
Kelly's heart tore at seeing her friend so upset. "Kate, I know you--you are such a good person, and you're so sweet and caring--you would never do something like this unless you had a really good reason, so what's been going on with you?"
"I just..." she sniffed, trying to fight back the tears. "I was afraid."
"Of what?" Kelly rubbed her back.
"Jill left. She just left, and I...she was my best friend. You're supposed to need your best friend, and she just left without a second thought. And I was just afraid...I mean, Ashley's your best friend, and Carrie's your girlfriend, and Jason's your brother, but I'm just a back up singer, you know? I was just...I was afraid...if Jill left me when she was supposed to be my best friend what was gonna keep you...I'm just a backup singer...so when Jason asked me out I saw it as a way to kinda find a place, you know? A more permanent place, and I know it was wrong, and I know it wasn't fair to Jason, and I'm so, so sorry. You're my closest friend besides Jill, and I...I was afraid of losing you too."
"Sweetie..." Kelly pulled Kate into a tight hug as she started to cry harder again. "I wish you had told me that's how you felt."
"I know. I should've," she pulled back a little. "But you just have so much going on right now. I didn't want to bother you with this."
"This?" Kelly raised her eyebrows. "This--the way you feel--that's so important to me. I would never consider you coming talk to me about that bothering me, no matter how busy or hectic my life is at the time, ok?"
Kate nodded, wiping the tears from her eyes.
"And let me tell you something, that business about you just being a backup singer? That's so far away from the truth, it's ridiculous, ok? And I never want to hear you talking like that again, I mean it. You mean so much to me, and if you don't know that, then I'm the one that should be apologizing because I haven't been as good of a friend as I ought to have been. I mean, out of all my friends...out of every single one of them, you're my number two. And the only reason Ashley is my number one is because I've known her longer...and she can beat me up, so..."
Kate laughed softly.
Kelly smiled, pulling her back to her in another hug, "I love you so much, ok? Never forget that, and never let anybody make you think otherwise, ok?"
"Ok," she nodded against her neck.
"Good," Kelly nodded as well. "Now the good thing about all this is, I was right, and I totally get to tell everybody 'I told you so'."
"Right about what?"
"You and Jason making a weird couple. I could tell it just wasn't right."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because you're my friend," Kelly reminded. "And more than anything, I want you to be happy, especially with all the stuff you've been going through because of me. So, if being with Jason was what made you happy, then I was going to let y'all be no matter how weird it was."
"It felt like I was kissing my brother," Kate confided.
"That's totally what I said!" Kelly exclaimed excitedly. "I knew I was right."
Kate laughed before taking a deep breath.
"Feel better now?"
"A lot," she nodded.
"Good," Kelly nodded.
Kate smiled, "Thanks for this."
"No problem," Kelly squeezed her gently, kissing the top of her head. "Silly girl..."
Kate laughed softly, shaking her head as she pulled back.
"Feel like staying and watching a movie with me?"
"No, it's ok. You should call Carrie back."
"It's safer to wait till tonight. She tends to be rather grumpy after being cut short, so it's best to let her cool off a little."
"Cut short?" Kate asked, moving off her lap to sit beside her.
Kelly chuckled as she turned on the tv.
"Oh...I seriously have the worst timing ever with you two...I'm really sorry."
"It's ok," Kelly assured, patting her knee. "I'm glad you finally decided to talk. I've missed my buddy."
Kate smiled.
"But if you interrupt tonight, I may actually let Care kick your ass because KC needs a little happy time, too."
"Happy time?" Kate giggled.
"Her words, not mine," Kelly laughed, smiling at the thought of how Carrie was probably pouting cutely back in L.A. She made a mental note to make sure to really make it up to her.

"I only want to see
If you're ok when I'm not around.
Asking if you love me,
I love the way you make it sound."

"Soon," Kelly assured with a smile.
"How soon?" Carrie asked, stretching out on her bed.
"Three days."
"You'll be here in three days, or you're done in three days?"
"I'll be there in three days."
"Here?"
"Yep."
"Right beside me?"
"Right beside you."
"Clothes or no clothes?"
Kelly giggled, "What do you think?"
"Just making sure we're on the same page," Carrie smiled. "So how was your day?"
"It was good. I'm almost to the point where I'm ready to call it a day."
"Which any normal person would've called it two days ago."
"I'm a workaholic."
"Yea, but that's ok, three more days and you'll be my little workaholic."
"Was that supposed to be some type of innuendo?"
"Be nice. It's late, and sexy doesn't come to me naturally."
"Oh please, you're the sexiest person I know."
"Yea?"
"Yea, well, I mean, except for maybe Einar..."
Carrie laughed, picturing the bald bass player, "Well, duh...how could I possibly compete with that?"
"So how about you? How was your day?"
"Totally lazy."
"No fair," Kelly pouted.
"I know, I wish you could've been here. Oh, hey, don't forget that as soon as you get back we need to start rehearsals for the concert."
"That's coming up?"
"Yes, Saturday."
"As in this Saturday?"
"Yes, as in this Saturday," Carrie laughed softly.
"And today is..."
"Sunday," she answered for her.
"And I get back Wednesday, so we have two days rehearsal?"
"Well, there's not much we need to rehearse," Carrie pointed out. "Y'all have been rehearsing off and on the past month, and my guys know all the songs I'm doing. All we really need to rehearse is the couple of songs we're gonna do together."
"We should probably pick the songs we're gonna do together."
"That might help."
"How is this set up, anyway? I'm going first, right?"
"No, I am. You're going last."
"Really? I thought you'd go last since it's in Nashville."
"No, we agreed you should go last. Your show's more energetic and stuff. It'd be a bit anticlimactic for you to open all jumping around and everything, and then for me to get up there with all my ballads."
"It would not."
"Would too."
"Who's we?"
"The board at the hospital that is in charge of the concert."
"You met with them?"
"Yep, and we all agreed that you should go last. It'll be me, you, then a couple of duets together."
"I didn't get to meet with them."
"I know. It was on your schedule before all the promo came up. We tried conference calling you but you were in interviews all day. Are you upset that I met with them without you?"
"No, no that's fine. I just didn't realize this thing was big enough to need it's own board."
"How big did you think it was gonna be?" Carrie asked curiously.
"I don't know...like a little showcase."
"Kell...you do know that this is an outside concert, right?"
"Um..."
"That thousands and thousands of people will be there?"
"Uh..."
"That it sold out in minutes, so they added more seats, and those sold out even faster?""
"Well..."
"And that it's gonna be televised?"
"It is?"
"Kell," Carrie laughed. "Do you just not ask questions ever?"
"Not really, no, I rather just show up and sing. Less stress that way."
"I should try that."
"You should, it's nice...oh, I got a couple songs from the record company today."
"Oh yea? How are they?"
"They're ok. Not bad but not great."
"You plan on making them great?"
"I plan on trying. Just because I agreed to use their songs, doesn't mean I'm just gonna roll over. I already gave copies to the guys and Kate to see what they could do with them. Do you want one?"
"No, that's ok. I'll wait to you record it. I don't care about some demo singer singing it."
"No," Kelly laughed softly. "I meant, if I send you a copy for you to listen to, will you let me know your ideas on it?"
"You want my ideas?" Carrie asked, unable to hide the surprise in her voice.
"Well yea, you have the country thing going on, and that's totally different than any of the guys in the band, and different's always welcome."
"Well, yea, then of course I'll listen to them for you. Just email them to me, and I'll tell you what I think when you get back."
"Thanks, Care."
"Yea, no, my pleasure, seriously. Thanks for asking."
Kelly smiled, "So how's Ace doing? Not missing me too much, I hope."
Carrie laughed, scratching the dog's ears as he curled up on her legs, "He's definitely enjoying getting me all to himself."
"So greedy, I swear..."
"But you know...I'm missing you..."
"I miss you too, Care," Kelly replied, unable to hide the emotion in her voice.
"Three more days?"
"Three more days, and I'm all yours."
"I can't wait."
"Me either," Kelly agreed, looking up at a knock on her dressing room door.
Einar poked his head in.
"Speaking of the sexy devil," Kelly laughed softly. "What's up Einar?"
"Everybody's ready to go," he grinned at his new nickname.
"Ok, I'll be there in a sec," Kelly nodded, watching as he closed the door. "Well, time for me to go. We're all going out to dinner together. I think Halbert said his wife and kids are gonna meet up with us too."
"Well, that sounds fun."
"Yea, he has the cutest little family."
"So...talk to you soon?"
"Yea. Why don't you give me a call when you get out the studio tomorrow morning? I should be up by then."
"Sure, sounds good. Y'all have fun at dinner."
"Alright, bye Care. Love you."
"Love you too," Carrie smiled.
"Get some sleep. You sound tired for someone who didn't do anything today."
"Hey, it was hard work not doing anything," she protested.
Kelly giggled, "I bet..."
"Night baby," Carrie laughed softly.
"Bye Care," Kelly replied before hanging up the phone. She tossed it into her purse as she walked out of the dressing room, wondering if there was anyway possible to cram in the remaining promo so she could get home sooner.
