"I feel the pull of your heart,
I taste the sparks on your tongue,
I see angels and devils
And God when you come
On, hold on."

Kelly stood with her arms crossed as she watched Carrie's sound check from the side of the stage. The large white curtain she had used for several tours was blocking the stage from view of any paparazzi or early comers for the show. She let her eyes travel over Carrie's figure, loving how amazing she looked in a simple pair of jogging pants and a shirt. She smiled as an arm rested lightly on her shoulders. "Hey guys," she greeted Kate, wrapping a loose arm around her waist in return and linking her other arm through her musical director's as he stood on the other side of her while the three of them watched from the side of the stage. "Check my girl out," she beamed proudly, nodding towards Carrie who was nearing the end of her sound check.
"She's pretty amazing, KC," Jason nodded in agreement.
"I know," Kelly shrugged playfully, turning to look up at Kate. "Where's Ashley?"
"Staying as far from the stage as possible during Carrie's sound check," she grinned.
"Why?"
"Because she's afraid that if Carrie sees her, she'll use it as another reason to believe that Ashley loves her."
Kelly laughed loudly, resting her head on her keyboardist's shoulder, "What would I do without all of y'all's crazy asses."
"Well, unfortunately for you, you're stuck with us, so it looks like you'll never get to find out," Jason replied.
Kelly pulled the two of them closer to her sides, "I love you guys."
"Ditto," Jason smiled as Kate kissed the top of her head.
Kelly smiled in appreciation as she looked at her musical director, "Why don't you go round up the rest of the guys for sound check? And let them know that even though the duets are last, we're gonna run through them first since Carrie is already out here."
"Sounds good," Jason gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze before walking off to locate the missing band members.
"So...how's it going?" Kelly asked, keeping her voice light.
Kate gave a light laugh, "I'm doing good."
"You sure?" Kelly looked up at her worriedly.
"Yes," Kate replied, squeezing her gently. "It still sucks, yes, especially today since it's the first time that she won't be there when I look to the side during an actual show, but...it's getting easier."
"Well, you know what you need to do then?"
"What?"
"Just don't turn to the side."
Kate gave a soft snort as she shook her head.
"I mean it," Kelly poked her side, making her smile. "Just look to the front at me. You know I'm gonna screw up the lyrics at one point, and you know how much that makes you laugh, so focus on that...focus on the guys, they know how hard this is on you, so you can bet they're going to be doing everything they can to keep you entertained so you won't think about it...focus on the audience because lord knows they love you, and they freak out just as much when you wave to them as they do when I wave at them."
Kate nodded.
Kelly allowed her to pull her closer, and she wrapped her free arm around her stomach, locking her hands on the taller girl's hips, "It's gonna be ok, you know?"
"I know...what do you think the fans are gonna say?"
"When?"
"When they realize Jill is no longer with the band."
Kelly's face fell for a moment.
"Didn't think that far ahead?"
"Of course not," she gave a short laugh. "But I mean, I've had people leave the band for various reason--some good, some bad--but I've never once explained to the fans why. That's not really in the 'need to know' realm for them. Let them think what they want."
Kate nodded, "You know, I'd be so lost without you right now."
"You wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for me," Kelly reminded.
"Details," Kate waved her off.
Kelly laughed as she turned back to the stage.
"She really is amazing, Kelly," Kate smiled. "You have no idea how happy I am for you...how happy I am for the both of you that it worked out for y'all because it is so rare for that to actually happen."
"Dude, ok, Care already made me cry once today, are y'all like teaming up on me now or something?" Kelly sniffed back the tears she felt forming.
Kate giggled as she gave her shoulders another squeeze, "Focus back on your girl and how hot you think she is right now."
"Am I that obvious?"
"Absolutely," Kate nodded with a laugh.

Kelly knocked on Carrie's dressing room door after she had finished her own sound check, hoping to catch the country singer before her hair and makeup team were in there, so she could wish her good luck before the show.
"Who is it?" Carrie called from inside
"What do you mean who is it?" Kelly smiled. "Shouldn't you know it's me, just by my amazing knock?"
"Kell, get your ass in here," Carrie laughed.
Kelly's smile turned into a grin as she opened the door. "I always you knew you wanted me for just my..." her voice trailed off when she caught sight of her. The taller blonde was facing away from her, wearing only a pair of black, lace underwear with the bra to match and black, strappy heels, nothing else.
"What?" Carrie turned to find a hungry look in Kelly's eyes. She smiled, walking towards the Texan as Kelly locked the door. "I was getting dressed," she motioned to the outfit laid out on the chair.
Kelly nodded, reaching out for her, "I say go out like that."
Carrie felt herself blushing as Kelly's eyes took her in eagerly, "So you're ok with thousands of people seeing me like this?"
Kelly frowned as her hands smoothed over Carrie's hips.
"I didn't think so," Carrie smiled as she stepped closer.
"Well, how about you just wait to put on clothes until after I leave," Kelly suggested.
"I think I like that idea," Carrie nodded, feeling one of Kelly's hands snaking up her back. She raised an eyebrow.
"You may still have on far too much clothing..."
"Oh really?" Carrie swallowed hard as Kelly unhooked the back of her bra. "Don't forget I have to be onstage in twenty minutes..."
"No problem," Kelly's heart raced as she slowly slid the straps of Carrie's bra down her arms before removing it all together. Her hands smoothed up her stomach. She watched Carrie's eyes close softly in pleasure as her hands continued their journey upward, and she ducked her head down, her lips immediately attaching to the country singer's neck.
Carrie wrapped her arms around Kelly's back, pulling her close, sighing in satisfaction of the feeling of their bodies pressing against each other as Kelly's lips explored her neck heatedly before making their way to her mouth. Their tongues collided, and she immediately gripped at Kelly's shirt, trying to pull it off, but Kelly wouldn't break the kiss to allow her too, so she had to settle for her hands moving blindly under the material.
Kelly finally pulled away enough, and Carrie quickly tugged off the thin t-shirt as Kelly turned them around, pinning her to the dressing room wall. Her hands slid up Carrie's sides as she kissed her way back down her neck to her chest, her blood forcing it's way hotly through her veins as Carrie's fingers tangled in her hair, pulling her closer to her. She tugged with her teeth, earning a slight whimper, and she soothed her lips over the sore spot before doing the same to the other side.
Carrie searched in vein for something to hold on to with her other hand as Kelly started to kiss her way down her stomach. She felt a soft hand in between her thighs, sliding downward until it hooked her right knee, lifting her leg. She braced her heel against the arm of the sofa as Kelly kissed her knee, slowly making her way all the way back up her thigh.
Kelly kissed over the thin piece of material, hearing Carrie's breath catch. She sucked in, tugging softly with her teeth, getting a warm moan in reply. She started to kiss her way back up Carrie's body, and her hand slipped inside the singer's underwear, replacing her mouth.
"Kell..." Carrie breathed shakily, her head falling back against the wall. She felt a full pair of lips on her own again, and she let herself go, wrapping her arms back around Kelly, letting the Texan guide her to wherever she wanted to go.
Kelly moved her hand knowingly. Her eyes opened as she tugged on Carrie's bottom lip, wanting to watch the blonde's reaction, wanting to make sure she was feeling what she wanted her to feel. She closed her eyes again, and kissed her firmly, her pulse rushing even faster from the look of ecstasy on Carrie's face. She groaned in reaction to the feeling Carrie's nails sliding roughly down her back.
"Baby," Carrie whispered against her lips, her entire body on fire.
Kelly nodded, moving her hand slightly faster, feeling Carrie tensing up against her. She wrapped her free arm around her, helping to hold her up as Carrie gripped onto her shoulders. She held her close, her lips trembling slightly at the feeling of the other girl's body's reaction to her touch. With one more loud moan and a skin-tearing grip on her shoulders, she felt Carrie melt against her. She quickly helped her remove her leg from the sofa, carefully placing her foot back on the ground before she wrapped both arms around her.
Carrie hugged her tightly, her face buried against her neck as she breathed heavily.
"Guess I couldn't wait until tonight..." Kelly laughed hoarsely.
"Can't say I'm complaining," Carrie replied after a moment, her voice feeling thick in her throat.
Kelly smiled, leaving a line of soft kisses along her shoulder before kissing her temple gently.
"Mm..." was all Carrie could manage as she rubbed Kelly's back appreciatively.
Kelly giggled, pulling back "I love you too."
"You are way too good to me," Carrie decided, smiling softly as Kelly helped her with her bra.
"Please...I get back way better than I give."
"Well, then I guess I have a lot to live up to tonight."
Kelly slipped her t-shirt back on before pressing their lips back together, "I'm looking forward to it."
Carrie brushed her hand across the idol's cheek before leaving one more kiss on her lips.
"I better get going, or you're never gonna be ready in time," Kelly grinned as she moved towards the door.
"Kell..." Carrie reached out and grabbed her arm, halting her.
"Yea?" Kelly pushed her sunglasses down over her face.
"I love you," Carrie smiled widely.
Kelly brought her hand up to her lips and kissed it softly before winking at her and exiting the trailer.
Carrie let out a deep breath as she let herself fall back onto the sofa in bliss.

I feel so far from where I've been."

"There you go," Ashley smiled, backing away from Kelly, mascara in hand. "All done."
"Thanks," Kelly nodded, moving from the makeup chair before Ashley could change her mind. She curled up on the corner of the sofa, her eyes scanning across the various members of her band that had all gathered in her dressing room. Carrie was already on stage, but she felt that her band needed her more than Carrie did at that moment. She smiled as Cory tried to convince Kate to try one of his concoctions.
She had given the boys a lecture beforehand, telling them to make sure to keep Kate occupied so she wouldn't focus too much on the fact that Jill wasn't there with them. During soundcheck she had also decided to move Kate's mic stand up next to Cory's, that way she wouldn't be standing awkwardly by herself, and she'd also have someone next to her. Einar had spoken up at rehearsals, suggesting that he could take a shot at singing backup as well, and Kelly had been presently surprised by his voice and immediately assigned him the lower harmonies.
She had known all along that they were going to be ok as a band. It wasn't the first time that they had changed personnel, and she wasn't naive enough not to know that it wouldn't be the last time either. On an individual level, though, this time was harder than all the others. She hadn't been nearly as close with the previous band members she had lost as she had been with Jill. She also hadn't had to watch one of her closest friends fighting to stay afloat because of the change in their lineup.
Kelly shook her head slightly, coming out of her thoughts at the feeling of someone sitting next to her. She smiled, wrapping an arm around Kate as the tall blonde rested her head on her shoulder.
"Ashley finally finished making you look like you didn't just have a quickie in your girlfriend's dressing room?" Kate asked teasingly.
"Shut up," Kelly laughed, wrapping her other arm around her as well.
"Everything ok?"
"Just thinking," she shook her head.
"About?"
"How amazing of a band I have, and how lucky I am to have been blessed with y'all."
"What else?"
"Fishing for compliments?"
"No," Kate smiled softly. "You just seem like you have a lot on your mind."
"I'm just really happy to have you here," Kelly admitted. "Your friendship seriously means so much to me, and I just want you to know that I don't take you being here and being my friend for granted. I know how much you've given up because of me, and I promise I'll find a way to repay you somehow."
"Hush," Kate instructed, hitting her arm lightly. "This is why you aren't normally allowed time to think--you get these crazy ideas like needing to repay me."
"Kate--"
"Shut it, I'm talking."
Kelly closed her mouth.
"You don't have to do a single thing to repay me. You are my friend. You mean the world to me. I know that I did the right thing. If anything, I'm the one that needs to repay you for all that you've done for me but lord knows I can work off that debt until the day I die, and it still wouldn't be enough, so," she raised her voice a little as Kelly made to speak. "So, instead of this nonsense about paying each other back how about we just call it even."
Kelly snorted.
"Helping each other out, and being there for each other is what friends do, Kelly," Kate noted, her voice turning gentle. "The fact that we do these things without expecting to get paid back for them is what makes us true friends."
She chewed on the corner of her lip.
"You know I'm right. You're just too damn stubborn to admit it."
"Maybe," Kelly finally gave in.
"I'll take that," Kate nodded with a giggle.

"Ash..." Kelly whined as Ashley started to touch up her make up as they waited backstage. She had gotten her band ready in time to catch the last half of Carrie's show from the soundboard, and she'd loved getting to see all of their reactions to her girl's performance. "I haven't even set foot on stage yet. You're acting like this is televised or something."
"It is televised," Ashley reminded.
"Did I know this?"
"Yes," Ashley laughed, tossing the blush back into her makeup bag. "You just tend to forget the details."
"I think you're lying."
"That you knew or that it's on tv?"
"That it's on tv."
"You just don't want to put on any more makeup."
"Oh look," Kelly's ears perked up at the sound of Carrie telling the crowd thank you and to have a great afternoon. She turned away from Ashley as she pulled out a tube of lip gloss. "Come on guys. Time to pray."
"You're so full of shit," Ashley replied.
"For praying?" Kelly asked innocently.
Ashley narrowed her eyes.
"And it's God for the win," Kelly smiled as she took her two guitarists' hands and formed a circle. "Lord, thank you for giving us this opportunity and please allow us to use our gifts that you have blessed us with to the best of our abilities in order to provide a great show for all the amazing people that have come out to support this cause. Please help us to raise enough money and enough awareness in order to help find a cure so that one day there will no longer be a need for events such as this one. In your name we pray."
There was a collective 'amen', and Kelly smiled as the sound of the familiar guitar riffs of "You Shook Me All Night Long" filled the park. She bounced on her toes, as they all went around doing their good luck hand shakes and fist bumps. She felt a pair of arms wrap around her from behind, and she turned around to find Carrie grinning at her.
"Hey," Kelly greeted, giving her a warm hug. "You were amazing."
"Just wanted to wish y'all luck before you go out," she replied, smiling as the band voiced their approval of her set. "I can't wait to join y'all out there, but until then, y'all kick butt, ok?"
"Yes ma'am," was the group response.
"I raised them well," Kelly smiled at Carrie's soft laugh.
"They're amazing, Kell," Carrie lowered her voice. "Like seriously, I was so blown away by them for the rehearsals for the duet. I mean, I love my band to death, but I'm so glad we're using yours because there's no way mine could've pulled off what yours has in such a short amount of time."
"I'd offer to let you borrow them, but I'm a bit selfish when it comes to my band."
"Understandably so," Carrie smiled, pulling her into another hug. "Love you."
"Love you too," Kelly whispered, kissing her cheek as she pulled back.
Carrie gave her arm a gentle squeeze before she walked to meet up with some of her own band who were going to watch the show from the soundboard.
"Everybody ready?" Kelly asked, reaching out to take Kate's hand in her own.
"Hell to the yea," Einar nodded.
"Alright then, let's go kick some ass," Kelly laughed, giving Kate's hand a reassuring squeeze before hurrying to take her spot on stage.

"Everybody sing,
Like it's the last song you will ever sing.
Everybody live,
Like it's the last day you will ever see."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carrie smiled broadly from where she stood at the sound booth, watching Kelly perform. She glanced to the side when a movement caught her eye, and her anger started to rise at the sight of the tall singer that was walking around backstage. "I'll be right back," she informed the sound technician before quietly following in the direction the singer had went in. She frowned when she found him talking to Jason.
"Carrie," Jason grinned, waving her over. "Look who showed up--you remember Graham, don't you?"
"How could I forget?" Carrie replied, her jaw muscles twitching.
"He just wanted to come congratulate Kelly, and you of course, on the success of y'alls campaign."
"Oh yea?" Carrie turned to Graham. "Well, that's very thoughtful of you."
Graham nodded in reply, looking around the backstage area.
"In case you're completely deaf, she's on stage," Carrie pointed out. "Speaking of people's whereabouts, where's your wife?"
"Back at home," he replied cooly.
"Taking care of your child, I suppose? I mean, I am remembering right, aren't I? You do have a baby with the woman, don't you? It's not just some silly vows keeping you two together, but your own flesh and blood, right?"
Jason looked back and forth between the pair of them confusedly as Graham narrowed his eyes at the country singer.
"Question, Graham," Carrie smiled sweetly. "Does your wife even know that you're here?"
"Of course she knows I'm in Nashville," he answered quickly.
"Not in Nashville...here, at Kelly's concert."
"Look, I don't know what your problem is," he began as he took a step towards her.
"Whoa," Jason moved in front of Carrie protectively. "Graham, maybe you should leave..."
"But I haven't seen Kelly yet," he reminded.
"Get used to it," Carrie replied from over Jason's shoulder. "Because if I have anything to say about it--which I do--you will never be seeing her ever again."
"We'll see," Graham smirked before turning and walking away.
Jason spun around to face Carrie, "Care to explain?"
"It's not my place to," Carrie sighed. "But can you just trust me when I say that he is not who you think he is, and that he is a very bad guy that has no business being around Kelly?"
Jason nodded, sensing the honesty in her voice, "You ok?"
"Yea," Carrie ran a hand through her hair, taking a deep breath. "Just a little too much excitement for one day."
Jason chuckled as he wrapped an arm around her, leading her back to the sound booth where they could both watch Kelly perform.
"Hi," Kelly grinned, bouncing on her toes as she joined Carrie backstage after her set.
"You were great," Carrie replied, biting the corner of her lip.
"You so want to kiss me," Kelly lowered her voice.
"Am I that obvious?" she smiled.
"I've come to know that look in your eye...I mean, I should by now, it's there all the time..."
Carrie laughed, pulling her into a hug.
"Ok, no time for that," Ashley fussed, breaking the two of them apart. She held out a shiny, blue vest, helping Kelly slip it on.
"What's that?" Carrie asked curiously.
"Costume change," Kelly replied, proudly.
Carrie shook her head.
"You want to kiss me..."
"I love you," Carrie nodded, reaching up to cradle her face quickly.
"I love you too," Kelly's smile softened.
"Ok, ok, I love you, you love me, we're a great big family, now get your asses back on stage," Ashley instructed.
Kelly laughed, holding onto Carrie's hand tightly as Ashley pushed them towards the stairs, "By the way that yellow dress..."
"Yea?" Carrie turned to her as she found her mark behind the curtain that had been lowered again.
"Way hotter than I imagined."
Carrie licked her lips subconsciously as she watched the Texan walk away to the other side of the stage.
++++++++++
Carrie swallowed hard as Kelly turned to look at her, her voice pouring out warmly. The shorter singer's eyes were dancing, and she was forced to take a deep breath. She quickly raised her microphone, nearly missing her cue as she got lost in her eyes, even though there was several feet of space between the two of them. She turned back to the crowd, forcing herself to focus on the ending of the song, doing everything she could to keep her mind from wandering back to her dressing room and what had happened in there earlier that day. She let out a sigh of relief as the song ended. She only had to make it through one more without thoroughly embarrassing herself, and she'd be scot-free.
"Ok y'all," Kelly smiled at the crowd. "We have one more song for y'all today, but before we get to it, Carrie and I both want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts for coming out today and supporting such an amazing cause. All of the kids that you are helping are so amazing and will cherish this gift you have given them for the rest of their lives."
Carrie smiled proudly as Kelly continued to praise the audience. She always had been rather eloquent at times like these.
"Ok, folks, so here's the last song we got for y'all, but first please give it up one more time for my band," Kelly pointed to the musicians behind her. The crowd cheered, and Carrie fought down a blush as Kelly winked at her from across the stage as the drums started in on the final song.
++++++++++
Kelly's heart was racing. She was standing inches from Carrie, facing her as they held out the last note of the song, and her body felt as if it were on fire. She nodded as Carrie raised a slight eyebrow, and they finished the note together, smiling as the band continued to riff off the end of the song. She took Carrie's hand, squeezing it firmly as they turned back to the crowd, bowing. They each waved with their free hand, and Kelly felt Carrie squeeze her hand back just as firmly. She continued to wave, watching as the curtain lowered for the final time. She felt Carrie's grip on her hand start to lessen, until she finally pulled away altogether once the bottom of the curtain hit the floor. "Care?" Kelly turned to her to find her swaying on the spot. "Carrie?" she questioned worriedly, noting the paleness of her face. "Care, are you ok?" Kelly reached out quickly as Carrie's eyes rolled back. She caught her in her arms, sinking to the ground with her. "Care?" her voice shook as she looked down at the other girl confusedly. She could feel herself being surrounded, numerous questions thrown at her as her heart pounded. She lowered her ear to Carrie's lips, feeling a sour taste rising in the back of her throat, "Oh my God...somebody call an ambulance!"
