"It's really good to hear your voice saying my name,
It sounds so sweet.
Coming from the lips of an angel,
Hearing those words it makes me weak."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Doctor," Kelly hurried after him. "Doctor wait. Excuse me," she attempted to wipe the tears from her eyes as she reached out to stop him.
The young doctor sighed, finally turning around to face her, "I'm sorry, but I can't release any information."
"You don't understand," Kelly shook her head. "Carrie...she's...I..."
"I can only give out information to family members," the doctor explained.
"I'm her sister," Kelly replied quickly.
The doctor's face softened at the desperation in her voice. He gave her an apologetic look, "I know who you are."
"Please..." Kelly could feel her eyes watering again. "She means everything to me. You've got to give me something."
The doctor relented as he stepped closer, lowering his voice, "She needs to have surgery on her heart, but we have to wait until she stabilizes a bit more."
"H-how long?"
"That depends on her, really. It can be a few minutes, or a few hours, maybe even a couple days."
"But...can't you do anything now? If you wait...what if you wait too long?"
"Don't worry," the doctor instructed gently. "We are monitoring her very closely. If things start to get worse, we will operate immediately."
"Then why don't you operate now?"
"If we operate when her body isn't stable, then we run the risk of her body not being able to handle the surgery."
Kelly ran a shaky hand through her hair, "I know you said it depends on her, but...how long do you think until she's ready?"
"An hour or two would be my estimate."
"And is she up? Is she awake?"
The doctor looked around nervously, "I can't--"
"Can I see her?"
"I really am sorry," the doctor shook his head.
"But her family isn't here," Kelly pointed out. "And if you're right, and she's ready for surgery in a couple of hours, then they still won't be here yet. They live in an entirely other state. She needs someone in there with her. She's got to be scared."
The doctor glanced back at Carrie's hospital room.
"What if...what if that was your sister? What if your little sister was stuck far away from the rest of your family, and was preparing to go into major surgery. Wouldn't you feel better knowing that she had a friend with her to comfort her instead of having to go through it all alone?"
The doctor took a deep breath, lowering his voice even more, "Listen carefully, ok? If I let you in there you have to promise me not to get her overly excited, alright? Talk to her. Tell her everything's going to be ok...she really is scared, so just keep her calm, ok?"
"Ok," Kelly nodded quickly, willing to agree to anything if it meant that she would be able to see Carrie.
"Ok," the doctor turned, making his way back to the room. "Just give me one moment."
"What's going on?" Jake asked as the doctor walked back into the hospital room.
"He's going to let me see her," Kelly bit her bottom lip, her stomach turning nervously.
"Tell her we're all here for her, will you?"
"Definitely," Kelly replied as the doctor walked back out of the room.
"It's a private room, which I'm sure you already knew," the doctor began. "The curtains on the windows are closed. Leave them that way because there are already a pack of paparazzi outside, waiting to get a glimpse of what's going on. Also, there is a red button on the wall just above her bed. She is hooked up to several monitors to let us know if something goes wrong, but just in case, or if she needs anything, just press the red button, ok?"
"Ok," Kelly swallowed the lump that was rising in her throat. She didn't want to break down in front of Carrie and risk upsetting her.
"Ok," the doctor held the door open for her.
Kelly walked in slowly, hearing the door shut softly behind her. She paused at the foot of Carrie's bed, her knees shaking as her eyes passed over the country singer.
Carrie was laying motionless in the hospital bed, her eyes lightly closed. The wires that decorated her skin were all attached to various machines which kept track of her vitals.
Slowly, she watched as Carrie's eyes started to open. She let out the breath she didn't know she was holding as Carrie shifted on the bed, groaning. "C-Care?"
Carrie's eyes groggily turned to her, "Kelly."
"Oh, thank God..."
"Are the nurses still here?"
"No, why?" Kelly asked worriedly. "Are you ok? Do you need something?"
Carrie shook her head, "Just...you...I just need you."
Kelly's vision was immediately blurred by the tears filling her eyes. "Care," she sighed, hurrying to her side, sliding onto the bed with her. "Baby..." she cradled her face gently, leaving soft kisses across her cheeks and forehead. "They...they said you need surgery. They said something's wrong with your heart, but I know your heart. I've listened to it every night, and it is so strong and so beautiful. I know you're going to be ok. As soon as your body stabilizes, they're going to take you into surgery, and you'll be good as new, ok?"
"I'm so sorry," Carrie whispered. "I lied."
"Don't worry about that right now," Kelly replied as she looked into her eyes. "Right now you've just got to relax and stay calm so they can get you into surgery. They'll be plenty of time after for me to kick your ass for lying to me, ok?"
She gave a quiet laugh, "Ok."
"Is there anything you need? Can I get you anything? The doc said all I have to do is press the red button. It's kinda like room service, you know?"
"Kell..."
"Yea?"
"The only thing I want...is for you to lay with me...I just need to feel you next to me..."
"I don't know if I can do that," Kelly admitted, noticing Carrie trying to reach up and kiss her forehead. She immediately lowered her head to keep her from straining.
"Why not?" Carrie asked, leaving another kiss on each of the Texan's eyelids.
"Because if I just lay with you, then I have to stop, and if I stop right now, I am going to break down, and I can't break down in front of you because I promised the doctor I would keep you calm."
"Baby..."
"Care, please don't," Kelly shook her head, using every ounce of strength she had to not let the tears in her eyes fall.
"I love you."
"I'm scared," Kelly whispered, their foreheads resting together. "I know I'm not supposed to admit that because you're scared too, and I need to be strong for you right now, but I am so scared. I love you way too much. If I lost you, I don't know what I'd do...I wouldn't survive. I can't, not without you..."
"I'm not going anywhere," Carrie assured, wrapping her arms around the shorter singer, feeling her hot tears against her neck as she carefully fell next to her. "It's ok...I promise I won't leave you....everything's going to be ok..."
"I can't resist,
Before you go tell me this:
Was it worth it,
Was she worth this?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kelly's eyes shot open at the sound of someone entering the hospital room.
"I didn't mean to wake you," the doctor apologized softly as he walked over to the machines next to the bed.
"I wasn't sleeping," Kelly shook her head, moving to untangle herself from Carrie. "I was just...I mean...she's...I can explain..."
"Shh..." the doctor motioned. "You did great."
"I--"
"Relax," he stated a little more firmly. "Carrie's ok. She's peaceful, and all signs seem to say that she's ready for surgery."
"Are you sure?" Kelly asked nervously. "I mean, you're completely sure right? You don't need to double check, right?"
"I'm completely sure," the doctor smiled gently. "You did great."
Kelly's eyes quickly turned back to Carrie as the sleeping blonde started to stir. "Hey," she greeted carefully.
"Hi," Carrie smiled tiredly as she pulled Kelly's arm tighter across her stomach.
"We're gonna start prepping you for surgery, ok, Carrie?" the doctor stepped closer to the bed.
"Is Kelly coming too?"
"No," he chuckled. "Kelly isn't coming too."
"But she'll be here when I'm done, right?"
Kelly looked at the doctor hopefully.
"Well...when you get out of surgery you will be moved to a different room than this one, but I'll find out what your new room number will be and let her know, ok?"
"Ok," Carrie nodded in satisfaction, her eyes closing again.
"Is she ok?" Kelly questioned.
"Some of the medication she's on right now is making her brain a little fuzzy," the doctor explained.
Kelly nodded, "Can, um...do you think I could wait in her new room for her?"
"It will be a while until she's done, wouldn't you be more comfortable in the waiting room with your friends?"
"I can't deal with them right now," Kelly admitted. "They'd ask questions, and I...I don't have any answers, and I just...please?"
"Sure," the doctor allowed. "How about I give you two a minute alone before we take her to surgery?"
"Yea?"
"Don't take long though," he warned.
Kelly nodded, watching as he exited the room. She turned back to Carrie, stroking her cheek softly.
"Kell..."
"Hey baby," Kelly smiled as Carrie's eyes started to open once more. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I need a really big nap," she pouted.
"Yea," Kelly smoothed a hand across her hair. "The doctor said the medicine will make you feel funny."
"The doctor was in here?"
"Yea, he just walked out. They're about to take you to surgery."
Carrie nodded.
"Are you scared?"
"Yes," her voice came out in a whisper.
"It's ok," Kelly assured. "You're going to be ok. The doctor seems really great. He's gonna take good care of you, ok?"
"What if something happens to me?"
"It won't," Kelly replied, wiping the tears that were forming in the country singer's eyes.
"But what if it does? Who's gonna take care of you?"
"You are because nothing is going to happen to you, got that?" Kelly held her face in her hands, forcing her to look her in the eye. "Do you understand me? Nothing is going to happen to you. I won't let it."
"Kell, you can't--"
"I won't let it."
Carrie nodded, sniffing.
"Ok then," Kelly swallowed hard. "I promised the doctor I wouldn't take long, so how about you give me a kiss like we both know you want to so we can get this show on the road."
Carrie giggled, kissing her softly. She went to kiss her again, but Kelly pulled back.
"Un-uh, nope."
"What?"
"You don't get the rest of that kiss until you wake up from surgery."
"You're gonna be mean to me while I'm about to go into heart surgery?" Carrie asked in disbelief.
"Tough love," Kelly replied simply, watching as Carrie's eyelids began to grow heavy. "Ok, Care," she kissed her forehead lightly. "Fight like hell, baby."
"I will," she found Kelly's hand, giving it a faint squeeze.
"I love you."
"I love you too," Carrie smiled as Kelly climbed off of the bed.
Kelly returned it before making her way out of the hospital room.
"How she's doing?" the doctor asked curiously.
"You...you're good at what you do, right?"
"I'm great at what I do," he assured, patting her shoulder softly before moving to open the door.
"Doctor," Kelly stopped him, eyeing Jake carefully who was still poised outside of Carrie's hospital room. "About what you saw...well...Care and I...I mean, she and I are just...it's not...she just..."
"It's ok," the doctor replied.
"I don't think you understand," Kelly shook her head.
"It's ok," he repeated. "Carrie's my patient. I'm her doctor. Any personal information of hers is kept strictly confidential. So whether or not I understand is of little importance because whatever it was that I did see isn't ever going to go any further than that door right there."
Kelly let out a deep breath.
"Now you see that nurse over there?" he pointed to an older brunette, waiting patiently several feet away.
Kelly nodded.
"Her name is Beth, and she's going to take you to Carrie's new room now, ok?"
"Ok...thank you, doctor...really."
"I'm just doing my job," he nodded, before motioning to another nurse that was standing by the one he had pointed out and made his way inside Carrie's room.

Kelly sat curled up in the chair, her chin resting on her knees as she stared at the clock on the wall. The second hand ticked off the minutes, and the minute hand ticked off the hours, and she still wasn't sure how much time had passed because she couldn't get her eyes to focus enough to be able to actually read what the clock was saying. Instead, she spent all her energy on keeping her mind completely blank. That was the only way she could keep from thinking of Carrie, and that was the only thing keeping her from breaking down in fear, because the more time she spent focusing on nothing, the harder it became to actually focus on nothing, and the harder it became to focus on nothing, she knew the more time had past, and for some reason too much time passing scared her. Nothing good ever came out of too much time passing. No news was never good news.
"Kelly..."
She jumped from the chair, her heart feeling as if it were beating a hundred miles an hour, "Doctor...you scared me..."
"I'm sorry," he apologized, closing the door behind him.
"How is she? Is she ok? Is everything alright?" Kelly stepped towards him as the initial surprise wore off.
"She's ok," he nodded, carefully. "Unfortunately, I can't tell you much. Carrie wasn't lucid enough for us to ask if it were ok...you're not her family," he looked at her apologetically.
"I understand," Kelly replied. "What can you tell me, though?"
"Well...like I said, she's ok, but unfortunately, it wasn't an easy surgery. Things were worse off than they should've ever been allowed to get, but she did great through it all. And I will be having a talk with her doctor about this."
"Me too," Kelly nodded.
He smiled.
"So...when do I get to see her? Are they bringing her in?"
"They're gonna be bringing her in any minute now."
"Is she awake?"
"No, and it will be a while before she is. She's weak right now, and her body just went through a tough surgery so it needs to rest and repair itself."
"Is there anything I can do to help?" Kelly chewed on the corner of her lip nervously.
"Just make her comfortable. Bring your chair close to her bed to sit by her. Talk to her."
"I'm guessing I can't--"
"No getting on the bed," he replied firmly.
"I promise," Kelly quickly held up a hand.
"And here she comes," the doctor nodded as the hospital room door opened.
Kelly reminded herself to breath as the nurses rolled Carrie into the room, adjusting all of her new monitors.
"Go on," the doctor nudged her gently. "Go sit with her. The more calm and relaxed she is, the quicker her body will start to repair itself."
Kelly nodded, slowly walking back to her chair. She pulled it along the floor until she was right alongside Carrie's bed. She watched the taller blonde's chest rise and fall as she slid her fingers slowly across her palm to her wrist. "Oh thank God," Kelly's eyes welled up when she felt Carrie's pulse beneath her fingertips, and she laid her forehead on the mattress as she held onto her hand tightly.

"How is she doing?" Kelly asked the nurse that was filling in new numbers on Carrie's chart.
"She's doing good," the nurse nodded.
"That's what you said the last two times you were here," Kelly replied, "But she still hasn't even moved. Shouldn't she have at least moved by now?"
"It's only been a couple of hours," the nurse replied.
"How much longer?"
"I don't know."
"Well, can't you get somebody in here that knows?" Kelly asked, feeling what little patience she had left ebbing away. "I mean, where's the doctor, anyway? I haven't seen him since they brought her in here. Shouldn't he be doing something?"
"That doctor was a surgeon. His job was the surgery. He's finished his job."
"So that's it? He just throws her aside like a piece of unwanted food?"
"He has a lot of other patients he has to deal with. Miss Underwood isn't his only one."
"Well she should be," Kelly replied, catching herself as her voice raised. She looked at Carrie before continuing carefully, "Can you please tell the doctor that I need to speak with him? Please?"
"I'll see what I can do," the nurse said stiffly before walking out of the room.
"Wench," Kelly muttered, kissing Carrie's hand softly.
++++++++++
"Doctor," Kelly rose as the familiar face entered the room. "Thank you."
"Well, I was just on my way over here when a rather disgruntled nurse stopped me to chew me out about some crazy girl in one of my rooms."
Kelly frowned, "Well, if she would know what the hell she was doing--"
The doctor raised a hand, halting her, "It's ok. You're tired and stressed, I understand, and unfortunately, I have some bad news."
"Bad news?" she felt her knees go weak.
"Yes, Carrie's family has arrived."
"Oh."
"They're her family..."
"Oh..." Kelly sunk back into her seat. "They want to see her, huh?"
"She can't have more than two visitors at a time right now, and as her family they do have first right to her."
"But...but she's not even awake yet," Kelly pointed out.
"I'm sorry," the doctor shook his head. "I promise to let her know when she wakes up that you stayed as long as you could."
"And that it's your fault that I wasn't there when she woke up?"
"And that it is my fault that you weren't here when she woke up," he offered a smile.
"Ok," Kelly nodded, standing back up. She took Carrie's hand gently, "I'll see you as soon as they let me."
"I don't see why they wouldn't give you time to her," the doctor assured as they walked out of the room.

Kelly walked into the waiting room beside the doctor. She froze as several people rose from their chairs, her older sister being one of them. Her eyes moved from her sister over to what had to have been Carrie's family. She recognized Shanna; the other girl must have been Carrie's other sister since she looked like a perfect mix between Shanna and Carrie as well as between Carrie's parents who were also standing there with them. Her stomach turned at their hard glares, and with Shanna's look of guilt, she suddenly had the sinking sensation that they had a very good reason as to not allow Kelly to have time with Carrie.
Kelly turned back to her own sister as the doctor walked towards Carrie's family, and she could feel her body trembling at the gaze staring back at her. She knew. Her sister knew. Kelly didn't know how she knew, but she knew that she did, and she suddenly felt an urge to run back to Carrie's room and lock herself in there, that way nobody could prevent her from spending time with the other girl. Instead, however, she found herself slowly moving towards her sister until she was right in front of her, feeling rather small in her presence.
Her sister opened her mouth to speak, but Kelly quickly drew a breath, her voice coming out much higher and much shakier than she was used to.
"I know," she said, not looking her in the eye as her own eyes burned behind her lashes. "Alyssa, I know. I know you have a million things to say to me right now. I know you want to yell and scream and lecture, and I know you're probably disgusted with me, and I know you may hate me. I know that, but please...please can you just not...not right now. Please just wait until later because right now I am really hurting, and I'm scared, and I really, really need my big sister right now."
Alyssa reached out, wrapping both of her arms around the shorter Texan, and pulled her to her in a hug.
"Thank you," Kelly choked out through her tears as she buried her face in her sister's shirt.
