"And you take your time,
And you stand in line.
Well you'll get what's yours,
I got mine."

"I forgot dressing," Kelly said flatly as she stared down at her salad.
"You can have mine," Kate replied as she sat next to her, handing her the packet of dressing she had grabbed in the hospital's cafeteria check out line.
"But now you don't have any," Kelly pointed out, still staring down at the salad.
"I already ate," Kate admitted. "I just told you I was hungry because Ashley told me to, in order to get you to eat something. She's busy distracting Alyssa right now so you'll have a moment of peace."
"Where are all the guys?" Kelly asked, finally looking around the quiet cafeteria.
"Jay sent them home and promised he'll keep them informed. It's been a long day," Kate explained. "They were exhausted."
"What about Carrie's band? I haven't seen any of them."
"They probably gave up on trying to get into the hospital and went home too."
"They couldn't get in?"
"No," Kate shook her head. "They got stuck behind the paparazzi and everything trying to get out of the park, so by the time they got here, the police were already outside the hospital, keeping anybody that wasn't family from entering."
Kelly stabbed at a tomato in her salad.
"Please eat," Kate urged. "Ashley will chew me out if you don't."
"There's something I still don't understand."
"What's that?"
"How did the paramedics get to the concert so quickly?"
Kate gave a soft smile, "Because of you and your retardedly large heart."
"Carrie's the one with the heart problems," Kelly shook her head, resting her chin on her hand.
"No, Kelly, I was just...you bought out the first couple of rows of tickets and gave them to the children in the hospital that were strong enough to be outside, remember?"
Kelly nodded.
"Well, when you have that many sick children, you have to take certain precautions. There were a couple ambulances there for the concert just in case, and a couple more on standby. That's what I meant when I said they were there because of you. You do realize that by you being your normal incredibly sweet self, you probably saved Carrie's life, right? I mean, everybody knows the quicker someone gets treatment, the more their chances of survival go up."
"Kate..." Kelly shook her head, leaning towards her.
"It's ok," Kate replied, wrapping an arm around her as the shorter singer rested against her shoulder. "I'm sorry. I suck at this trying to make you feel better thing."
"Yea, you do," Kelly agreed.
Kate laughed lightly, giving her a gentle squeeze, "Well, fine, no more playing nice, then. You need to eat something...now."
"I'm not hungry."
"Does this look like a caring face to you?"
Kelly pulled back enough to be able to look at her, "Yes."
Kate's heart tore, "KC..."
"I'm sorry," Kelly shook her head again, sitting up straight. "I'm being a butt. I don't know what's wrong with me."
"KC, you have the right to be a butt. The girl you love is laying unconscious in the hospital right now."
Kelly winced.
"I really do suck at this making you feel better thing, huh?"
"Very much so."
Kate gave a short laugh as she picked up Kelly's fork and placed it back in the Texan's hand, "Eat."
Kelly finally relented, taking a bite of salad.
"Uh-oh."
"Kate, I know you suck at this, but saying uh-oh inside of a hospital really, really doesn't help the make Kelly feel better campaign," Kelly noted as she took another bite.
"Kelly..." Kelly tensed at the sound of her Carrie's sister's voice. She looked up to find her standing on the other side of the small table. "Can we talk?"
"I, um, I'm supposed to be eating right now," Kelly replied, motioning to the salad before her.
"Please?" Shanna looked at her hopefully.
"Fine," Kelly relented.
Shanna nodded, sitting down across from her. Her gaze moved to Kate, "Do you mind--"
"Shanna, this is Kate. I don't know if you two have met, but Kate chose to stand by your sister and I over her best friend in the entire world, so anything you have to say to me, you can say in front of her."
"Kelly, it's ok," Kate whispered. "I can go."
"Please stay," Kelly's voice softened as she turned to her.
Kate nodded, rubbing her arm reassuringly.
"She's not awake yet," Shanna informed.
"Have you gotten to see her?" Kelly asked. "Oh wait, of course you have...you're family."
"Kelly," Shanna looked at her apologetically.
"Or, I mean, even if you were her friend, I'm sure you would have gotten to see her. Her family seems nice enough. I'm sure they'd let her friends visit."
"Kelly, look..."
"But not if you're her girlfriend, right? I mean, you may love her more than anything in the world, but if you're her girlfriend, you don't have a chance in hell, right?"
"Kelly, I'm sorry," Shanna finally blurted out.
"Well, that makes me feel better. I mean, I can't see Carrie or talk to her or hold her hand or do any of the things the doctor said I should in order to comfort her, but your apology makes me feel so much better," Kelly replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
"I didn't know what else to do. I panicked."
"You had no right," Kelly's voice raised.
"Kell..." Kate soothed.
Kelly sighed, "You had no right. You gave Carrie your word. You had no right to tell anyone."
"I'm sorry, ok, I'm sorry? It just sort of came out," Shanna tried to explain.
"How does something like that just come out? What were you on the flight here, and were just like I think I want an extra bag of peanuts, oh, and by the way Mom and Dad, your daughter that we're rushing to go see in the hospital is screwing that girl that was on stage with her?"
"They needed to know."
"How? How is it something they needed to know?"
"I don't know."
"Was I posing some kind of threat to Care?"
"No."
"Then how is it something they needed to know?"
"I don't know."
"Then why the hell did you think it was up to you to tell your family something that you swore you wouldn't? I mean, forget about me and the fact that I'm sick to my stomach right now, knowing that Carrie is in the same building as I am, and I can't get anywhere near her...what about Care? How upset do you think she'll be when she finds out that you told them?"
"I--"
"She just had surgery," Kelly's eyes turned icy. "Do you think that is something she needs right now? Do you think her being upset and stressed out over this is going to help her heal any faster?"
"I...I didn't think about that."
"You didn't think, period," Kelly spat. "And what about all the paparazzi outside, huh? Your family is obviously very much against this idea. What's to say they won't let something slip to one of the reporters?"
"They would never do that."
"Really? Why? Because you trust them?"
"Yes," Shanna replied quickly.
"Just like Carrie trusted you?"
Shanna's mouth opened, but nothing came out.
"Right," Kelly nodded, standing. "Thank you. Just when I thought this nightmare of a day couldn't get any worse, you pull this. Thank you very much."
"Wait, KC," Kate gathered up her tray for her as the idol walked away. "You need to eat."
Kelly stopped, turning around to face her.
"Please?"
Kelly nodded, relaxing some as she reached out for the taller girl and Kate wrapped her free arm around her, "Come on, I'll just eat it in the waiting room."
