Chapter 14
It had been a week since I’d talked to Nick. I was kinda relieved, since I wasn’t sure what I’d do if I saw him. What had happened that night had done something to me. All I kept thinking about was Nick’s lips on my neck. Nick’s eyes staring into mine. The way his voice sounded when he whispered in my ear. I didn’t know what to do. I was driving myself mad trying to analyze what had happened, and of course I hadn’t told Kevin any of it. He would have flipped out if he knew, and I really didn’t need Kevin to blame me for acting stupid, I was doing a great job at that myself.
I was on yet another uneventful patrol. Actually ever since I talked to Nick, it seemed like all the vampires had just disappeared. It was strange really, and I was beginning to wonder if my slaying gig wasn’t pointless since there was never anything to slay. So there I was, walking through the park bored out of my mind. Usually I would have enjoyed the fact that there weren’t any vampires around, but I needed something to take my frustrations out on. I figured since a vampire was the cause of my frustrations, a vampire would be perfect to take them out on. It sucked. It really did. But then again, maybe Nick knew I would be angry about what had happened, and he had told all the vamps to stay far far away from me. No, that couldn’t be it. I mean he had probably told them to stay away from me before all this happened and well, they hadn’t really listened to him. I decided to head to the club where I knew my friends were. I highly doubted I’d come across any vampires in the park.
I found my friends at our usual table and, believe or not, Kevin was there too. He was busy whispering something in Jess’ ear, so he didn’t notice me coming in. AJ got up as soon as he saw me and gave me a hug. Lately he’d been giving me a lot of hugs. It was kinda weird. AJ was the tough guy of the group. Cool, calm and collected. He never used to give out so many hugs, not that I was complaining, ‘cause I’d always had a thing for AJ. I just never told him. So I accepted the hug and went around the table hugging everyone else, except for Kevin and Jess. They were obviously busy. They had hooked up after the date a week ago, and basically they had been inseparable since. When Kevin and I had to train, Jess was there. When we had any kind of slayer business to discuss, Jess was there. And Kevin wouldn’t have it any other way. It was cute really. I hadn’t seen Kevin so laid back ever since I’d met him. But I couldn’t help but worry if it would interfere with his job. I was beginning to sound like the old Kevin. I refused to let that happen. Besides, there was nothing to worry about. There hadn’t been any slayer business since the Nick incident. That’s what I decided to call it. I didn’t want to think of it as anything other than an incident.
“ So…” I asked as I sat down next to Dani, “Have they been like this all night?” I nodded my head toward the lovebirds.
“ Yes!” she said laughing, “It’s starting to get annoying!”
“ I know!” Howie said, “It’s impossible to have a conversation with them!”
I laughed. Kevin still hadn’t noticed I was there, so I dec to to let him know.
“ Yo Kev!” I shouted across the table. Kevin tore his eyes away from Jess’ and looked at me.
“ Angel!” he said, “What are you doing here? I thought you were on patrol!”
“ Relax Kevin!” I laughed, “You sound like you just got caught cheating!” The table erupted in laughter. “There were no vamps, so I decided I deserved a little fun!” I stated.
“ Okay!” Kevin said and then he turned back to Jess. I rolled my eyes and the others laughed at me.
“ Now you know what I mean!” Howie said.
“ Yeah I do!” I laughed. I turned to AJ and said, “Don’t I owe you a dance?”
“ What do you mean?” he asked obviously confused.
“ A couple of months back…I told you we could dance after I went to the bathroom, but then there was an emergency!” I looked at him to see if he remembered.
“ Oh yeah!” he said, finally remembering what I was talking about. “You know…you’re gonna have to give me more that one dance!”
“ How’s that?” I asked.
“ You know…interest and all!” he said looking at me with a strange look in his eyes. Was he flirting with me?
“ Oh okay!” I laughed, deciding to let the strange look go. We stood up and walked out onto the dance-floor.
Our bodies started moving in sync with the thumbing music. Our bodies were soon rubbing against each other and I could tell that the hot and heavy dancing was having a certain effect on AJ. I could help smiling a little when I realized that I was having that effect on him. I mean, I had always found him extremely sexy with his big brown eyes and sculpted body. The fact that his arms were covered in tattoos wasn’t really a turn-off either. I had always had a thing for tattoos, and guys who looked like they could be dangerous but they really weren’t. AJ was that kind of a guy. Someone you wouldn’t get into a barroom brawl with if you only saw him. But once you got to know him, he was really a sweetheart. A huge flirt, but a sweetheart nonetheless. He had a great sense of humor too, a big pln myn my book. A slow song came on and we wrapped our arms around each other, swaying to the music. I closed my eyes and let the music fill my ears. I rested my head on his shoulder and whispered,
“ This is nice.”
I could fell a smile spreading across AJ’s features as he answered me,
“ Yeah.” His raspy voice sent chills down my spine. I loved his voice. I always had. I just never realized how much before that moment. I suddenly felt the urge to look into his eyes. I can’t ain ain why, but I had to look into those eyes. I lifted my head of his shoulder and moved so I could see his eyes. We kept moving to the music as we stared into each other’s eyes. There was a hint of something in his eyes. Something I hadn’t noticed before. The way he looked at me. It was the kind of way you look at people you’re in love with. There’s a certain glow in your eyes when you look at the person you’re in love with. I smiled at him and he smiled back. My heart was beating at an almost inhuman rate. Why was he all of a sudden having that effect on me? It had been years since I’d felt that way around AJ. True, I still had “more than friends”-feelings for him, but I had been suppressing them for so long, I hardly ever noticed them anymore. So why was I al of sudden noticing them again? My eyes drifted down to his lips. I can’t even begin to tell about how many nights I had spent alone thinking about kissing those lips. I licked my lips and looked up into his eyes again. The look had changed. Was that desire I saw? I was sure that if he looked into my eyes, that was what he would see. He did. He saw it. He licked his lips too. His face came closer to mine. I could feel his breath mingling with mine. He was about to kiss me. What I had longed for, for so long, was about to happen. I leaned up toward him to let my lips meet his halfway. His lips brushed softly against mine and my entire body began to tingle. He hadn’t even really kissed me yet, and already my body was behaving like that. He was about to go in for the kill, so to speak, when we were interrupted by a loud crash by the door. I quickly turned around and gasped at what I saw.
