"I'm turning my back on this life for as long as I can,
Someone make me star 'cause I sure as hell can't be a man…
I'm too fragile and clever you know
And this universe just leaves me cold
I'm just hanging around here, I'm longing for someone to hold
Whoever told you that these were the days of our lives?
The sweet boys they crumble, and the wicked ones rise and survive
And they're running our lives, yes they're running our lives
You always knew didn’t you mother?
I’m a stranger in this world…"
Darren’s sweet voice was warbling through the house. Daniel heard it from the living room and now it had approached Daniel. Darren was probably watching him now, right behind him.
Daniel didn’t dare to turn his head and face Darren… This surely wasn’t one of THEIR new songs, was it?
“What is this?” Daniel asked, his back to Darren. He was busy with something in the kitchen, so busy he had no time to look at his lover.
“Oh, Danny… Your back speaks to me… this is just something I heard on the radio the other day!”
“Well it’s a beautiful melody,” Daniel commented.
“It is, yes, it is a musical,” Darren answered and walked out of the kitchen slightly annoyed, shouting over his shoulder, “we gotta get going!”
Few hours and a boring torturing session of questions and answers later they both walked out of a TV station. Elena quietly followed them, even being behind them she somehow managed to guide them to meet a small crowd outside on the street.
Some girls smiled shy smiles and reached their hands to give Darren things to sign.
He smiled shyly back and signed a few CDs and a few ph.
.
Daniel’s eyes were fixed on Darren’s lean body and how his body language spoke while he was interacting with the crowd and was rather shocked when a young blond touched his shoulder gently and gave him a picture… He looked at the blond, then at the picture… It was one of those pictures… Daniel didn’t quite register anything until he felt a pen being shoved into his hand... Elena quietly leaned to whisper in his ear, “just sign it and give it back.”
Daniel looked over at Darren who was cordially smiling and signing more CDs and photos. Just at that moment Darren turned his head to look at him and winked playfully. Daniel chuckled in return and wrote on the pic, “Daniel Jones, Savage Garden”.
He gave the pic back to the blond girl who smiled at him and putting her hand on his shoulder smacked a quick kiss on his cheek. Daniel looked helplessly over at Darren. Then at Elena. Darren ignored him. Elena was at least sympathetic and patted his shoulder, raising her voice so everyone would hear her, “guys, everyone, thank you, everyone, but Darren and Daniel really need to get going now!”
She quickly pushed them both through the crowd and into a car waiting for them.
They all sighed with relief when the driver started the engine and the car moved. Elena turned at them from the front seat and smiled.
“Surprised you’ve got quite a following?” she asked.
“How in the world did they know we’re gonna be there?” Daniel asked. Truly surprised.
“Well, the word of mouth, Danny!” she was beaming.
Darren reached his hand and took Daniel’s hand in his. “What’s the matter, Danny?”
Daniel turned to look Darren in the face. He was also beaming. Have they all gone mad?
“I just….” Dl stl started but Elena interrupted him.
“You were on the radio yesterday, mentioned it to a DJ, the DJ mentioned it on the air later, some fans heard it, called some other fans…”
Daniel’s face flushed. He turned to look away from them. He was staring through the window at people on the street and trying to comprehend the idea of complete strangers calling each other and talking about HIM, Daniel Jones.
“You’ve got quite a decent fanclub. People are in touch these days much more than they used to be. On the internet,” Elena continued, “They share information, they hear something and they spread the news, they are a real solid community!”
Daniel felt the flush on his cheeks burning. They discussed him on the Internet. He could just picture a chatroom… People chatting…
“Danny?” Darren squeezed his hand.
“Yes,” Daniel finally turned back to them both and found them staring at him questioningly.
“Is there anything wrong?” Darren asked.
“Well let’s just leave Danny to get used to it,” Elena said.
“Used to being loved, well he certainly doesn’t need getting used to that!” Darren playfully squeezed his hand again and giggled.
Daniel wondered since when Elena was such a confidant for him. He actually managed a smile and said, “Well love is love and then there’s… well then there are complete strangers!”
“You’ll just have to learn to live with it, as these people are those we need very much!” Elena said, turning back in her seat and leaving the two of them alone, well at least “sort of” alone.
“What do you think, Danny?” Darren asked, their hands still pressed together.
“What about?” Daniel involuntary leaned in and kissed Darren’s cheek. He shook all the wrong feelings off his shoulder. He was in fact proud of his little diva.
“Well… We could… for some rehearsals…” Darren looked at him, sensing his confusion, and explained, “well for the rehearsals for the first live shows, we could invite some fans!”
“Darren!” Daniel exclaimed, all the “wrong” feelings from before returning to him, “how do you imagine THAT happening?”
“Well we need to rehearse the few upcoming weeks and…”
“Yes, Darren, we need to rehearse! Even we don’t know yet if we can even play with those musicians! How many times have we performed live anywhere anyway? Once to friends? Once in a pub? How do you imagine this?” Daniel was gettingryngry and knew he needs to control it… he felt Elena inhaling deeply and holding her breath. However he continued with what he was going to say, ren?ren? Do you … Do you want them to see you storming off the set crying?”
“That won’t happen!” Darren exclaimed rather passionately.
“And how do you know what will happen,” Daniel screamed back at him, “be real for one second!”
They both fell si. El. Elena didn’t turn around. The argument was hanging in the air.
“Is that a no then?” Darren asked finally.
“Yes, Darren. NO. It is not going to happen!” Daniel was relieved it was over. He leaned his head against the window. His hand was still in Darren’s. He prayed he didn’t hurt him. But there was no way he would have let it happen.
Elena sat in silence. She knew whose ambitions will drive them to the top. Now she knew whose decisions will be most sensible ones. And probably the final ones, too.
“Drop you off where, boys,” she asked in a while.
“Home,” Daniel said.
“Home, me too,” Darren said avoiding to look at Daniel.
Darren was dropped off first. He didn’t say anything. He didn’t kiss Daniel goodbye. Didn’t slam the door, either. He just left.
Daniel immersed deeper into the seat and prayed Elena would not start talking now.
15 silent minutes later they stopped in front of Daniel’s house. The house he used to share with Darren. Is that his refugee now for every time they have a fight?
“You alright, Daniel?” Elena asked.
“Yes, thank you, I am more than fine!” Darren answered and smiled at her, “I am fine, thanks for some support today!”
“You both are not really used to coping with fame, but you do take it more into the right direction than Darren is…”
“He loves it, and I don’t think I ever will!” Daniel sighed.
“The point is not to love it. Tointoint is to learn to manage it to a degree it let’s being managed. A little control here and there. No one should actually love it,” Elena smiled, “and believe me, you have seen nothing yet!”
Daniel got out of the car and looked it drive off.
He didn’t have time to let her last words to sink in as he noticed something that made his blood go cold. People in front of his house. Almost right on his doorstep.
He wished he could do something to avoid it, but then again, he was at home. It was his home. He didn’t have anywhere to go.
He inhaled. Exhaled. People had noticed him already so it was too late anyway.
He approached them slowly and already noticed the same blond he saw outside the studio. Some other people from there. How the hell did they got there so fast? Daniel remembered they drove to Darren’s place first. Then it occurred to him they probably didn’t know Darren lives somewhere else. That was his escape.
He walked past them as quick as ouldould, not looking at anyone. All girls, he quickly noted. They did keep a little respectful distance, so he didn’t have to fight his way through… He shouted over his shoulder before unlocking his front door, “for God’s sake, Darren doesn’t live here!”
He closed the door behind him and threw the keys on the floor. He picked up the phone and slumped down on the sofa. He was going to call Darren. Then he looked at the phone and his both hands fell into his lap. He will regret it later. He will regret whatever he could say to him now.
The phone rang.
“Danny…” Darren was crying, “please, Danny…”
Daniel couldn’t believe it. Of course, pointless exercise of pretending to go home. Each to their own home. He knew Darren couldn’t even stay alone for long enough to take a shower.
