Orlando woke with a start. He looked around the room. Sitting up slowly he realized what had awoken him. His cell phone was set on vibrate and it was vibrating it’s way across the table. Orlando grabbed and flipped it open. “Hello.” He barked.
“Hello, still grouchy?” Kate asked.
“Sleeping.”
“You were sleeping, it’s the middle of the day there.”
“I guess.”
Kate sighed into the phone. This wasn’t what she had expected from Orlando. He hadn’t dated Kellie that long why was he all tore up.
“Look Orli I just wanted to let you know I made it back ok.”
“You’re in Australia already?”
“Yeah, I left after your last call. Hardly any hold ups at the airport.”
Orlando was searching for his watch. He obviously had been asleep longer than he thought.
Kate continued, “Anyways, I just wanted to check on you. See if you’re ok.”
Orlando paused, was he ok? No he’d never be ok again. “I’m fine Kate, just fabulous!” He answered.
“Well that’s good. You’re better off if you ask me.” She said.
“I didn’t Kate.”
“You didn’t what?”
Orlando gritted his teeth. Kate could be pretty dense sometimes.
“Look Orli I think I’m losing you, so I’ll call you later ok?”
“Sure, whatever.”
“Great, talk to you later!”
“Bye.”
“Bye!”
Orlando closed his phone and fell back into the couch. It was mentally exhausting talking to Kate sometimes. Still he had to admit she probably saved him from making a big mistake. It was then his eyes settled on the envelope. He had promised to read the contents, but Johnny hadn’t but a time frame on it. Orlando scooped the envelope up and carried it to his bed room. He pulled out his suitcase from the bottom of the closet and slipped the envelope inside. “I’ll read it, just not anytime soon.” He said. Shoving the suitcase back in he slide the doors to one side. Then he noticed the clothes. On the side Kellie had used hung a light blue silk sun dress. The same one she’d been wearing last night. Orlando pulled it off the hanger. He backed up to the bed and sat down. He stared at the dress and felt the tears start to fall. He brought the dress to his face an inhaled. It smelled like her. A light mixture of lilac and the ocean. Had it all only been last night? Orlando felt like his heart had been broken forever. He laid down still clutching the dress and fell into another fitful sleep.
Jenna heard the lock click and knew Kellie was finally coming out of her room. She glanced at the clock, it was almost noon. Kellie walked out and didn’t seem to notice Jenna. She had taken a shower and slipped into a pair of pyjama pants and a cami. “About time.” Jenna said. She watched Kellie nearly faint.
“Oh my gosh! Jenna what the hell are you doing here?” Kellie was clutching her chest.
“After last night I figured I’d better stay here.” Jenna answered.
Kellie sighed and continued to the kitchen. She opened the fridge and shut it just as quickly. “I need to go shopping.” She said coming back into the living room. Kellie sat on the couch next to Jenna and looked around. “Did you sleep here all night? You could have used the guest room.” She said.
“I wanted to be where I could hear you incase you needed something.” Jenna replied. She stood and stretched. “I can take you shopping if you want to lend me some clean clothes.”
“No, I’ll go later.” Kellie replied. She was still searching the room. “Ok where is it?”
“Where’s what?”
“Jenna don’t play dumb, what’d you do with it?”
“It’s in a safe place. You’re to emotional right now and I don’t want you to do something you’ll regret later.”
“Like what?”
“Throw it away.”
“I wouldn’t do that. I’ll just send it back to him.”
“That’s not a good idea either.”
Kellie glared at Jenna and crossed her arms. Jenna just smiled. “Can I expect you at work on Monday?” She asked.
“Yes, defiantly.” Kellie answered.
“Ok then I’ll leave you alone until then.”
“Thanks.”
Jenna leaned down and hugged Kellie and left. The apartment grew quiet and Kellie was all alone. “This is the way it should be...forever.” She whispered.
“I’m sorry about this, but we’ve filmed as much as we can with out Mr. Gibbs’ character.” Gore Verbinski said. “Kevin McNally has an inner ear infection and the doctors won’t let him fly.”
Orlando looked at Johnny and smiled. “You all get time off until mid September. Then we’ll resume filming.” Gore continued. The cast and crew began to disperse. “Well now what are you going to do with yourself Bloom?” Johnny asked. Orlando was staring at the coast line. “I hear Australia is nice this time of year.” He said.
Kellie literally dove back into work at the fitness center. She picked up teaching extra classes and would have worked seven days a week if Jenna hadn’t threatened to fire her. Kellie started to make more friends through the clientele at the center and got invited to go to clubs. It was at one such club that she ran into Elijah Wood. “Kellie Parks!” Kellie heard her name above the music and spun around to see Elijah standing there. He had a huge smile on his face. “Imagine running into you here! Where’s Orli?” Elijah asked. “Oh, he’s...uh...I don’t know.” Kellie stammered. Elijah noticed her discomfort and realized his error. “I’m sorry I didn’t realize.” He said.
“It’s ok, you didn’t know.” She said.
“Are you here with someone? Can I buy you a drink?”
“Well I came with a few friends, but they seem to have disappeared, so yes!”
“Great! Come over and sit with me.”
Elijah grabbed her hand and lead her across the crowded floor to the VIP section. There he was sharing a table with Dom, Billy and Sean Bean. He quickly introduced Kellie to Sean and ordered a round of drinks. While Kellie was talking to Sean, Elijah quickly notified Dom and Billy about Orlando. Kellie spent the rest of the night drinking and dancing with all of them. Elijah offered her a ride home when the club closed. Kellie was a little tipsy, but accepted gratefully. She gave Elijah her address as he helped her into his car. They talked all the way to her apartment and then Elijah walked her up. “Why don’t you come in?” Kellie asked when they got to her door.
“Sure.” Elijah smiled and followed her in. “Can I get you something?” Kellie asked.
“Water is fine.”
“Great! Make yourself comfortable.” Kellie yelled from the kitchen.
Elijah sat down and looked around the immaculate living room. Kellie’s lap top sat open on the coffee table. He located her remote and turned the TV on. When Kellie came on Elijah had stopped on an entertainment news show. He didn’t know Kellie had entered the room.
“We have exclusive photos of the two eating breakfast at a trendy café.” the newscaster said.
Pictures of Kate and Orlando began to pop up. “Kate Bosworth was rumored to be seeing a local man, but cast him aside when her ex-flame came into town.” A picture of the model Kate had been dating was shown and the anchor continued. “They two have been inseparable, taking romantic walks in the park and checking out local hot spots at night.” Kellie stood frozen staring at the TV. Elijah turned around and saw her standing there. “Kellie! I can change it.” He said reaching for the remote.
“No, don’t!” She shook her head. Kellie sat down next to him as the news cast continued. “Orlando was quoted as saying ‘We’re back together. I’m happier than ever. She’s a great girl.’”It ended there and cut to commercial. Kellie was stunned. Elijah watched as she struggled to control her emotions. “Are you ok?” He finally asked.
“What? Me? Yes, I’m fine. We only dated for a month and a half.” Kellie said. “It’s not like it meant anything.” Kellie took a sip of water. Elijah drank his own water and wondered what he was missing. The last time he talked with Orlando it had sounded like Kellie was anything but a fling.
Elijah didn’t stay long after that. He was confused and wanted to call Orlando. He left promising to call Kellie during the week. He got home as fast as he could. Not caring what the time difference might be he called Orlando. After a couple rings a breathless Orlando answered. “Wood this had better be good!”
“Hey Bloom nice to hear from you too!” Elijah said .
Orlando sighed. “Hey, yeah it’s been awhile.”
“Yeah, you’ll never guess who I hung out with tonight.”
“No probably not.”
“I ran into Kellie Parks and the 310 Lounge tonight!”
There was a pause and Elijah could hear Orlando moving.
“Really? How was she?” He finally asked.
“Great, she hung out with us and I gave her a ride home.”
“Us? Who else was there?”
“Dom, Billy and Bean.”
Orlando suddenly realized that Elijah hadn’t called to tell him about his night out.
“What did she say?”
“Nothing, why do you think I’m calling you?”
“I don’t know, why exactly are you calling me?”
“Well when I took her home I was watching TV and guess who the main story was about on Entertainment News?” Elijah yelled into the phone.
Orlando knew paparazzi had been following Kate and him every where. It was only a matter of time before it was broadcast.
“So what you’re mad because I didn’t tell you I was back with Kate?” Orlando asked.
“No, I don’t care about that. What bothers me is the look on Kellie’s face when someone mentions your name and the way she reacted to the story.”
“She saw it?”
“Hell yeah! What did you expect?”
“Didn’t think about it to be honest and what do you mean how she reacts?”
“She turns white as a sheet and clams up. I must have watched her dance for an hour tonight and not once did she let anyone touch her.” Elijah said. “Sean asked her to dance and she refused. I watched her on the floor and if any guy asked her to dance she practically ran away!”
Elijah was breathing hard and angry. “What did you do to her?”
“Me? It’s more like what did she do to me.” Orlando shouted. “Ask her what happened, ask her about her husband and kids!”
Orlando snapped his cell phone shut. Elijah slammed his down. Tomorrow morning he would ask Kellie.
Kellie tried to ignore the persistent banging. It didn’t go with her dream. She peeked from under her pillow. Someone was knocking on her door. Kellie slid out of bed and padded to the door. She opened it to a grinning Elijah. He held up to espresso’s and a bag. “Breakfast?”
Kellie backed up and let him in. He lead the way to the couch. Kellie flopped down next to him and gratefully excepted the coffee and a bagel. She sipped her drink and watched Elijah. “What’s up?” She finally asked. He looked out the window and sighed. He then turned to face her. “I called Orlando last night after I left here.”
Kellie sat forward and choked on the hot liquid. “You what!” She choked. Kellie sat the drink and food down. She glared at Elijah and moved further away from him. “Will you tell me what happened?” Elijah asked.
“What did he tell you.” Kellie asked.
“Nothing, he told me to ask you, so here I am.”
Kellie sighed, how many times would she have to relive it? Kellie opened her laptop and opened the file. She turned it towards Elijah. “Read. I’m going to take a shower.” Kellie left the room and Elijah began to read.
An hour later He was still reading. Kellie sat on her balcony staring at the ocean. She was hurt and angry. It wasn’t like she expected Orlando to remain single, but to be with Kate again. Kellie had successfully avoided anything remotely Orlando related for the past month. She hadn’t even told Jenna what had happened. She had let Jenna read the files, no sense it keeping that from her. Jenna suspected they had something to do with the break-up but hadn’t pressed for info. Kellie was still contemplating everything when Elijah cleared his throat. She turned to see him looking at her. His expression was sad. He came out and sat down next to her.
“I don’t understand.” He said. “What does it have to do with Orlando?”
“I didn’t tell him, I planned to, but someone beat me to it.”
I can see him being upset that you didn’t tell him, but enough to end everything?”
Kellie shrugged “It didn’t make sense to me either. I can only guess that he only read the negative articles.”
Kellie continued to star across the ocean.
“I printed all the articles out and sent them to Johnny before I left. I hope he gave them to Orlando to read.”
“You never heard from him?” Elijah asked.
“I asked him not to contact me.” Kellie replied quietly.
“We need to find out if he ever read them.” Elijah said.
“No, we don’t. It doesn’t matter.” Kellie stood up and went back into the apartment. Elijah followed her.
“But...” He began.
“No! Don’t you see? He’s moved on and so have I. Just leave it alone.” Kellie said.
Elijah sighed and ran his hands through his hair. He watched Kellie as she moved aimlessly around the apartment.
“Ok. Fine. You’re right.” He said.
“Thank you.” Kellie said.
“No, thank you for sharing this with me and trusting me. I know it wasn’t easy.” Elijah said.
Kellie smiled and blushed. It hadn’t been easy, but there wasn’t any sense keeping it a secret any longer. Kellie shrugged and crossed to room to close her laptop. Elijah watched her. He hadn’t spent a lot of time with her, but he could see the difference. She had been open and happy at the party. Now when she smiled it didn’t reach her eyes. You could sense a sadness there. It pained him to see it. Somehow maybe he could fix it.
