Hey guys, I hope you didn't get all messed up about the last chapter. This one is a rather short one as I didn't have that much time, but thought I shouldn't leave you hanging there for too long. ;-)
Chapter Fourteen
Katie walked down a long white corridor. Where was she and how did she get here?
She heard voices far away and tried to find them, but she could see nobody. Suddenly she became aware of the fact that something was different. What was it?
There was a feeling of loss inside of her, but she couldn’t recall what had happened. She walked towards the light at the end of the tunnel, slowly but steadily. And then she saw the figure of her sister appear just at the entrance. “Come on, Katie. Hurry!”
She quickly walked towards her sister, but hesitated just a few feet away from her. Suddenly it all made sense to her. The long white dress she was wearing, the long tunnel and the light…”Am I dead?” she whispered, her voice hoarse.
Anna laughed. “You wish! Come on, hurry up, you’re just nervous. I promise it’s gonna be fine!”
Katie followed her sister through the door and walked over grass. The sun was high up and shone brightly – in fact everything was so bright; Katie could hardly open her eyes. She only saw black silhouettes of men – all of them turning around to face her.
She made out Orlando’s silhouette, but he was turned away. She could hear his voice, but she couldn’t make out the words and the voice was slowly fading away. She quickly moved towards him. Someone grabbed her arm and lead her through the crowd. Just as she was behind Orlando, little black dots began to dance around in her sight. She took a deep breath and prepared to say something at the moment when Orlando turned around. She saw his face, saw his amazing smile and it literally took her breath away. Her chest tightened, the black dots closed in around her. She felt her fingers and lips tingle, someone grabbed her, tried to steady her, but her knees gave in and she felt herself sink to the floor unable to prevent it. Then darkness closed in around her.

Orlando raced up the stairs; the lift had taken too long. He hurried down the corridor and finally met two persons he knew: Anna and – Jamie. Anna rushed up to meet him. She fell into his arms, tears were in her eyes. Orlando hugged her. He was confused. His whole body ached, he was aware of every muscle in his body, but his brain didn’t seem to work at all.
Over Anna’s head he gazed at Jamie, a questioning look on his face. Jamie understood and walked up to him. His eyes showed concern, he looked tired and weary.
“The doctors are with her now. You better wait for them to come out and explain everything. We hardly know anything at all.”
Orlando just nodded and pulled Anna closer. She hid her face at his neck; her body was shivering – as was Orlando’s. A few minutes later she gained control again. She pulled away from him and left for the lady’s room. Orlando sat down beside Jamie. The two men were silent, but one could feel the tension between them. Every thought in Orlando’s mind raced around Katie. He was dying to see her.
Jamie desperately tried to think of something to say. Something that would comfort his old friend – and eventually himself. He had seen Katie for a few minutes, but had been unable to actually speak to her. She had only whispered Orlando’s name. It had felt like someone had stabbed him from behind. To see Katie like this, her face battered, her eyes closed in pains he couldn’t even imagine, her belly vibrating, as if the little life inside of it was fighting to live and all this blood. The doctors were shouting at each other and shoved him aside. He had called out her name, but all she whispered had been his.
Was he supposed to tell him?
Jamie knew that the child had been born, but nobody knew if he was going to survive and be alright again – and nobody knew about Katie. What could he say to comfort Orlando?
Painfully as it was already, the waiting made it worse. Jamie knew exactly was Orlando was going through – what it felt like to lose somebody you loved. But he wasn’t going to lose Katie. Nobody could her away from them. Jamie suddenly became furious; he felt all the rage that had ever been inside of him rise up into his face. His heart was beating in his head, his hands were shaking and his teeth were gritted together. He noticed a faint movement at his side and glanced at Orlando. It was as if he was looking into a mirror. He saw the same rage and the same suppressed panic in those eyes that he felt in his heart.
Orlando’s lips curled up slightly when he saw himself in Jamie’s eyes and suddenly he felt exceedingly grateful to have him here.
Anna returned from the bathroom and sat down between the men. She looked tired; her eyes were swollen and red. She sank down weakly and both men took her hands into theirs. She smiled at that and in that position they stayed until the doctors walked up to them.
All three of them rose, but were asked to sit down again. Orlando felt like fainting. He could heat the blood rushing through his veins and was aware of every single heartbeat. “God, I never asked much of you – just don’t take them away from me…” he pleaded silently.
Suddenly the doctor addressed him in particular. Orlando hadn’t been able to listen so far and now only nodded in answer to the question of who the father was.
“Well, we had to have an emergency surgery to save the boy’s life – but it is still critical, very critical. We have to keep him alive artificially Your son has suffered severe injuries,” the doctor spoke slowly, obviously aware of Orlando’s trouble to follow his words. “Mr. Bloom, I have to be honest with you. I don’t think your son is going to make it through the night.” He paused.
Orlando swallowed. Everything around him started to turn faster and fast, but he had to get a grip. He looked up to face the doctor. “What ‘bout her?” He had put all his strength into those three words, but they had only come out as a whisper.
“I am sure Ms. Stratford will be alright. She has some minor injuries, but the loss of her child…,” he paused again. Orlando swallowed. ‘The loss of her child…’
It was his child, too.
Once again he braced himself to face the doctor. “Can I…” his voice trailed off. No matter how young he was, he didn’t want his son to be alone on his birthday.
The doctor nodded and gestured for the nurse who had waited nearby. But Orlando hesitated.
“Well, if you wish to see Ms. Stratford, you can follow me. We will probably not keep her in intensive care all night, but for now it is necessary. Just a precaution.” He added when he saw the puzzled looks on their faces.
Orlando felt the nurse’s hand on his arm, but didn’t move. He was torn apart between the desperate need to see Katie, to hear her voice, her laughter, only a faint glimpse of her smile – something that would assure him that this was only a horrible nightmare. But on the other hand there was the feeling of duty to his son, a father’s duty not to leave his child alone when in need. Anna, sensing what he felt, gently pushed him towards the nurse and he followed her hesitantly.
Curiosity took hold of him. What did his son look like? He would have to remember well to be able to tell his mother about it afterwards. Would he have his brown eyes or Katie’s green diamonds?
His hands started shaking again when he entered the room. Machines were beeping everywhere. He sat down on the chair the nurse had provided for him. His finger gently stroked the baby’s head. It felt so soft under his touch – so vulnerable.
“I would have protected you – you know,” he whispered, “I would have been the best father I could. I swear!” He felt the pressure of tears behind his eyes and didn’t do anything to stop them, but only continued speaking to his son.
“We had it all planned out, you know, you were gonna be a real smartass, and one day we’d send you off to Cambridge or Oxford – or maybe somewhere abroad. I can see your mom clearly waving after you. She’s wonderful – the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. You would have liked her. I wish I had a picture or something to show you – so you’d know for whom to watch out over there. Well she’s the one with those magical green eyes and the wonderful laughter. You surely won’t miss her. She’ll find you – don’t worry – and until then I promise you I take care of her. You just stay there and wait for us and we’ll come to join you some time. I’ll make sure she’s alright. I promise you…”
He started sobbing now.
At this moment the baby turned his head a tiny bit. He opened his eyes and looked at Orlando, the stunning green of them piercing through him, before the machines went into a long monotonous beep.
