Chapter 15
The next evening Darren was very silent, reticent. All he did was look at me sadly. I didn't know what had come over him, but the distance pained me. We took a shower by turns, silently ate our supper and silently went to bed. Darren fell asleep quickly, but I could not sleep for a long time. I listened to his calm breathing and thought. I don't know how to build mutual relations with Darren further. I understand that I want not only the help from Darren, but also a real relationship. A relationship where we talk, we have a meaningful friendship, mean conversation, friendship, a closeness and sex. Sex. That was the problem. All of Darren's dealing with people had meant sex. A rigid fuck in which he received not only physical pleasure, but also pain. In his own way Darren was a masochist. Not by nature though. Darren had just become accustomed to it. Everyone whom Darren met caused him pain and he had learned to live with it. Had learned to receive pleasure from it. I wanted to change that. But how? How could I show him that Darren was not just an object of desire, but also a person who meant something to me? I was irritated with myself for all my roughness, I would learn to control my emotions around him. Again I saw Darren's eyes, full of sadness, humility and love. Yes, maybe Darren likes me, but in what way? How could I be sure all of that was changed to love? How could I achieve the unification of his body and his soul?
With those thoughts I fell asleep.
I don't know how long I slept, but something awakened me. I lifted my head from the pillow and listened. A strange sound. A sound coming from the corridor. Of someone knocking on doors. I rose from the bed and went to the door, opening it slightly. What I saw forced me to instantly jump back and close the door. They searched for us. On the silhouettes looming in the distant end of the corridor, I saw the men who had been searching for us. In view of the neon signboard that threw pale light in the window, I grabbed my clothes and got dressed quickly. Thank God my job had taught me to dress in seconds as they do in the Army. I approached Darren's bed I shook his shoulder.
"Huh?" Darren looked at me with sleep in his eyes.
"Get dressed, quickly. We must leave," I said firmly. "Take only what is necessary."
"They... They found us? " Darren asked with horror in his voice, jumping from the bed.
"Yes, but we still have time to leave unnoticed." I calmed him. I took the gun from the table. "Take all the money and hide it under your clothes."
Again I approached to the door and opened it slightly. The gangsters had advanced closer to us, busy with the other hotel patrons who were angry at being awaken so early.
"I'm ready." I heard Darren's silent whisper. He had completely dressed. The top of his shirt was opened slightly. His shirt was tucked into his pants, and I could see the bulge of the money envelope as he pulled his jacket on. He'd done it all in less than three minutes. I was proud of him.
"Now you will leave from here and go directly to the fire ladder. It's behind a window on the right side of the corridor. Be as silent as possible, open the window and go down."
"And you?"
I involuntarily shuddered at his soft touch on my shoulder.
"I shall come after you," I said. "And…" I faltered. "No matter what happens, if I do not appear in two minutes, you should run as far as possible from here."
"And you?" Despair filled Darren's voice.
"Do you hear me?" I seized Darren by the shoulders and looked into his eyes. "No matter what happens... Go!"
I opened the door wider and Darren slipped by me. While he quickly went down the corridor, I watched the gangsters. Thank God they hadn't noticed Darren, busy as they were with the other irate patrons.
I heard a slight squeak from the window frame, but nothing more. Then I left the room, closing the door quietly behind myself. I quickly moved to the window. When I reached it, I looked around. Luck was amazingly with us. We were still unnoticed. I climbed through the window, and onto the ladder. Then I closed the window behind myself. I didn't want the gangsters to guess that we had managed to lose pursuit through the window.
Then I moved down the ladder, seized Darren by the hand, and we ran along the dark alley. Finally we stopped by a fence to catch our breath. My still-healing leg protested loudly, but I pushed the pain away. We needed to find shelter. Preferably in another part of the city.
We passed some homes, then hailed a taxi. All during the ride we were silent. I looked at Darren's face and saw that he barely restrained his anxiety, biting his lower lip. I lightly patted his shoulder and winked "Hey. It's OK" Darren weakly smiled before he turned to stare out the window.
The taxi driver didn't ask questions, just drove until we neared an abandoned part of the city. Then he refused to go further. We got out and I paid the driver. Then we walked along the empty street. We had no place to go. I knew perfectly well that in this part of the city, there were no hotels or places where we could spend the night. But this area was full of old, uninhabited houses. Good enough for what we needed. In one of these houses we could easily hide until other arrangements could be made. Time to leave this city, I knew. It had become too dangerous. In the morning I would call Mr. Hudson and order two tickets. The islands were nice and safe this time of year.
Do you have a passport for traveling abroad?" I turned to Darren.
"What?" Darren shuddered from my voice.
"Do you have a visa or a passport?" I asked again.
"No," Darren said, his head bowed in shame. "I was never considered worthy of such a document. Easier to control a whore if they can't travel far."
"Well, you'll have one soon…" I looked around. "Listen, I don't know why, but I liked that house. Let's see if we can get in and get settled for the rest of the night. Tomorrow is necessarily going to be a difficult day. We'll need to be well rested."
"Maybe…" Darren said in a small voice. "I-um… I guess you'll leave the city now, won't you?"
"Yes, I will. But we are leaving, Darren. Hudson will provide the necessary papers for you to come with me," I promised him and took his hand. "We're not just going to leave the city, we'll leave the country."
"We? Do-do you really mean that, Daniel? Or are you just going to trade me off when it suits you?"
"Darren, please don't be afraid. There won't be any problems with it. Hudson will make the arrangements for us." I put a hand to his face and Darren unconsciously leaned into the caress. "No, I won't trade you off. Trust me when I say that. Where do you want to go? The Bahamas? Fiji? The Caribbean?"
"I don't know," answered Darren. "Do I really have a choice?"
I sighed, not knowing how to explain. How can I cheer Darren? I wondered. The poor lad is completely disheartened. Already he's lost hope of anything better in life.
We came to the front door of the house. I tried it, but it didn't budge. Perhaps it was locked, or something was pushed up against it from the other side. I saw a broken window and approached it.
I waved Darren over. "I'll lift you. See if you can squeeze through that window and open the door."
I put my hands on his waist and lifted him up. One day, he'd be too heavy for me to do that, but right now it was good that he was so slight. With little effort, Darren climbed through the window and jumped down. I heard the rumble of his steps echo through the empty house. Then I heard the sound of a heavy bolt and one instant later the door was opened. I went inside and looked round. The stairway to the second floor had nearly collapsed, but it was still possible to climb it. Cautiously, trying to not stumble, I stepped on the first couple of steps, then reached out to Darren. "Take my hand and follow me."
Darren's palm was cold and wet. I felt an easy shiver and clasped his hand more strongly. "Be careful. Try to not fall."
We made it to the second floor and entered one of the rooms. Old things, dust, but it seemed safe enough. To my pleasure, there was an iron bed in a corner of the room. It was covered with old newspapers.
At least we have a place to stay the night. I turned to Darren. "Here is our bride-bed."
Darren grinned sadly.
"Sorry. Stupid joke." I said and sat on the bed. "Do you mind if we sleep on this bed together?" I asked Darren. "If you want, we can change off. First you can sleep, and before dawn I could?"
"No need for that. I think, it will be much warmer to lie together." Darren shivered from the cold. I had not noticed before, but he was dressed in his worn work clothes. His thin leather jacket did not keep away the autumn cold. It would be necessary to buy him some warmer clothes. Unless they went to the balmy islands. I am ready to buy him the world if only he could be happy. I thought. It was easy to imagine him smiling in the sun, on some private beach, while my hands worshipped his body.
"You won't mind if I lie on the edge? It will be easier for my injured hand." I invited Darren to sit.
"Sure. Why not?" Darren answered and sat down beside me. "I remember, in the shelter, we frequently had to lay with each other in bed to get warm.
"I promise you, that it will be the last cold night in your life." I put my hand on Darren's shoulder.
"You promise?" He clearly didn't believe me, but he wanted to.
"I promise. Now, let's get some sleep." I clapped Darren on the shoulder and we settled. I felt the springs which stuck out from the bed. I lay down and shifted to a more comfortable spot. Darren lay nearby, his warmth inviting. I embraced him with my healthy hand and pressed him tightly to myself, trying to get warm.
"Is this OK for you?" I asked.
"Uh huh," Darren nodded and put his head on my shoulder. He kept silent for a bit, then raised his head. "I'm sorry about your girl."
I shuddered involuntarily and forced myself to relax. "It's okay. All in the past. Try to sleep."
