Interlude Five:
"One for the One-Night Stand"

3:00am
The smoke swirled out off the balcony before the wind off the Gulf of Mexico caught it and swept it away.
Taking another drag, Orlando inhaled deeply, thinking of how good he'd been about smoking up until this trip. The cigarette he'd bummed off of Faye in the club the night they'd met had been his first in nearly two and half years. He had just been looking for something to say.
He'd seen her with her friends earlier that night. Every so often when he was sure Elijah wasn't paying attention, he'd watch her for a moment or two. Hair swept up into a lazy pony-tail, revealing a long, almost fragile looking, neck. Her face had delicate features... beautiful when she smiled which wasn't often he'd noticed. At times, she'd looked like she was in the last place on earth she wanted to be. But at others... she'd be laughing with her friends and he'd curse the insistent thumping base in the club, wishing he could hear her.
Later that night, he and Lij had braved the Spring Break hourde, leaving the VIP section to hang out by the bar. They'd been drinking and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Orlando, himself, was still able to remain relativly anonymous most of the time, but he and Elijah standing next to each other in a room full of college kids made that damn near impossible. When a near hysterical brunette and reluctant blonde approached Elijah, he'd recognized them immediately. He'd been hanging back by bar trying to go unnoticed when he saw Faye, who, like him, seemed to be trying to separate herself from the craziness. She looked... bored, uninterested... and a pretty drunk.
Now, it wasn't uncommon for a girl to play it cool upon meeting Orlando Bloom- to pretend she wasn't aware of his celebrity. It seemed that as many girls thought this was the way to snag a famous boyfriend as there were who tried to do it with constant fawning and ego stroking. But this girl, in her worn jeans and too-big-for-her-tiny-body T-shirt ("Welcome to New Jersey- Now Leave")... sticking out like a sore thumb in the ocean of scantily clad college girls... he knew she wasn't just acting aloof.
He wanted to talk to her but for the first time in a long time he didn't know what to say. He hesitated, mind blank. So when she ordered a drink, he bought it for her. Something to say. A way to start. Random chatting, bum a cigarette... and then Elijah had set her friend, the hysterical brunette, on him. After a moment of reveling in Orlando's discomfort with the fawning female, Elijah was pulling him away, thinking he was doing him a favor no doubt. He'd wished he had asked her where she was staying, for how long, but it all seemed kinda ridiculous.
He thought she was the kind of girl that, if he'd met her in a bar in LA, he'd buy her a drink, maybe ask her out but... College girl, on Spring Break, t-shirt declaring her from New Jersey... it just seemed kinda pointless.
It didn't make him want her less, of course. He'd wanted her from the moment he laid eyes on her that night. He just wasn't really one for the one-night stand.
But then... later that same night, there she was. She was just there on the balcony next to his. And he couldn't help himself.
Now, glancing over at the balcony where he'd seen her that night, curled up on a lounge chair hugging a cell phone, he couldn't quite believe that at that moment she was in his bed. He felt like he was running on some kind of autopilot. If he'd taken a moment anytime in the past two days to just think, she would probably not be sleeping in his hotel room at that moment. He really didn't like one-night stands. He liked her. What he had gotten to know of that night, he liked her. And he was damn well beside himself thinking about what had happened in his room when they got back to it.
Flicking the spent cigarette off the balcony, idly hoping it didn't hit anyone below, he slipping back inside the room and back into bed. She was still asleep but unconsciously wrapped herself around him as soon as he brushed the hair back from her head. He welcomed her against his body, winding his arms around her tightly, hating that she'd probably leave as soon as she woke.
This wasn't at all like him and he really didn't want to think about whether or not this was like her. But he didn't think it was. He wasn't sure why, but he'd be willing to swear this wasn't a regular thing for her. The thought made him feel a little better about the situation.
When she began to stir, he looked down at her face. Her big eyes were sleepy but watching him intently. She seemed unsure but made no move to disentangle herself from his arms. He realized that she didn't want to leave any more than he wanted her too. She thought he'd expect her to go and she didn't want to. He knew what was going on in her head as well as if she'd said the words aloud. For a split second, the thought irked him. He shouldn't be able to read her like that after one night. He pushed the thought away. It was too disturbing to him to waste any time on it.
"When do you leave?" Her voice was gravelly from sleep but it was a sound he thought he could definitely get used to hearing in his bed. Once again the troubling thought was brushed away in favor of reality.
"Sunday night. Late. You?"
"Saturday afternoon," she answered, glancing over at the clock on the nightstand. 3:23am. "So tomorrow."
His next words were out of his mouth before his brain even knew what was happening. "Stay with me till then?"
She didn't answer right away and he could have sworn she was holding her breath. It gave him a moment to think about what he'd just said. Why was he delaying the inevitable? In 36 hours, she'd leave and they'd never see each other again.
When she answered a soft, almost timid, "okay," he decided he'd just have to jump off that bridge when he came to it and immediately rolled her beneath him. Pondering his own insanity would have to wait.
