A/N: Thank you guys so much! This chapter is the first in which I start adding more characters based on friends / readers / reviewbies / etc. The character of Beth is taken from my actual friend Beth ... so I sorta don't own her. :) Sort of a filler chapter to add a little more meat to the story. My plot bunnies are back it seems so thus I have ideas going in and out, so perhaps I'll get the updates going faster again. *hugs*

“Becca, I have a date with him! The guy I told you about that I’ve been chatting with, remember? He’s going to be home for a few weeks. And I have an actual date with him!”
Rebecca smiled at her lab partner’s excited news. Beth had been telling her about chatting with a guy she had met on a chat room about a band, and she was genuinely happy for her friend. After all, she had been friends with Beth for a few years, and lab partners for most of the science classes at school.
“That’s great Beth! What’s his name again? I don’t mean to sound like I haven’t been following your conversations about your mystery man, you just know how I am.”
She smiled at her friend’s laughter as they worked on the latest lab for the class. They were both good at the class, so most often, they simply chatted while doing the work. It certainly made the labs more entertaining, as she was never much of a science person.
“His name is Bill. He’s a native here, he just has to travel with his job. He keeps saying its something with music, but doesn’t really go into too much detail, just that he works with a few small bands that are out on tour.”
“Cool! Maybe he’ll introduce you to these bands and you can have your own taste of the fame. You’ll have to call me and tell me all about the date. Promise?”
“Of course. But I’m not too sure a famous guy would be my type. I love to look at them and joke around, but seriously, I’m not too sure. But it’s still great gossipy jokes.”
Rebecca laughed and nodded, the two had spent a great deal of time together, one of their favorite pastimes being joking around about what famous person they would marry. It was a bit schoolgirl-ish, but still a load of fun.
“Oh my god, Becca! When did that happen?”
Rebecca turned her attention back to Beth as she almost yelled in the middle of the lab, earning them both scowls from the professor. She saw what had caught her friend’s attention and almost dropped the beaker she was holding. She was still wearing the ring on her left hand.
“Blast it! I just forgot to change it back. Looooong story, Bethy, quite funny of course. But I’m not engaged. I’m not even sure I’m dating anyone. It’s really complicated.”
“I have the time. After all, the lab sheet says we get to watch the beaker for fifteen minutes and record the reactions. So that gives you at least fifteen minutes. Any longer than that and you’ll just have to forgo your normal trip to the library for a little while longer.”
Rebecca laughed and shrugged, propping her elbows up on the counter to watch the beaker. She knew that Beth would get a good laugh out of the story, as she had been another person who seemed to tease her relentlessly about Patrick. So a story that involved them getting engaged at her friend’s wedding would certainly be just the sort of thing that Beth would get a kick out of.
“Well, remember how I mentioned I had a wedding to go to, my friend Marla’s? Well, I told you that Patrick was my date, right? No comments, Bethy, that’s not all. ... At the reception, I was talking to Marla, and she asked who Patrick was, he was standing right there, you know? So he just randomly introduces himself, and says that we’re dating.”
Rebecca smiled as Beth laughed, an “I told you so” look on her face. She shook her head and held her hand up to keep Beth from saying anything.
“That’s not all. Well there was a moment where we were sitting and such, and apparently it looked like a proposal. So everyone thought we were engaged. On a whim, we decided to just go along with it. You know me, never could resist a good joke. Thus the ring on the left hand. It’s an old one of mine that I wear all the time anyways, so we just used it. So I must have forgotten to fix it this morning.”
“Or you didn’t want to change it.”
Rebecca frowned, confused as to what Beth had meant by that. Was she suggesting that she actually wanted to have the engagement joke be real? That would be ... odd.
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing. Only that perhaps you really like Patrick as more than just a friend.”
Rebecca was silent for a moment, not knowing how to respond to that. But luckily, she was saved when the stopwatch went off, telling them that it was time to clean up after the lab.
“Clean up time. So, where are we meeting for the lab write-up? Your house or mine? I would be more inclined to yours. Petey is having some sort of conference group meeting sort of thing. Thus it’s going to be a lot of his friends over for most of the week. And from what I’ve gathered, it’s a bunch of guys that I haven’t met yet, so I don’t even know what they’re like.”
“Well, I would say we could meet at mine, but Mom is doing some sort of remodeling thing to practically the entire house. So it would be like working in a construction area. We might have to brave the strange band guys that your brother has over.”
Rebecca laughed lightly at how crazy both their houses were going to be. She knew that personally, she could easily drown out any noise that her brother’s friends might make. After all, she had gotten accustomed to it over the years living with him. She shrugged as she put away the last of the beakers after cleaning it out in the sink.
“If you can ignore the noises from the guys, you’re welcome to come over. Female company might be very appreciated in a house overwhelmed with testosterone.”
“Sounds like I’m performing some grand deed of charity. It’s just a lab write-up. Unless you want to throw in a movie, I’m up for that.”
“Good. Female company and a movie! Sounds like a great idea. We might even raid the kitchen for ice cream and stake out the den. That would be a great surprise. A group of guys being shoved out by us two.”
“Ooh! That does sound like fun. So, what time should I pop by? I’m free tomorrow.”
“That sounds fine. I should be home by five or six at the latest. Petey’s dragging me to meetings with some CEO’s after class tomorrow about the video thing. But afterwards, I’m free. And we can grab the den before the guys show up. How about that?”
“Great. So I’ll see you tomorrow then. And I’ll call you tonight to let you know about the ‘mystery man’ date.”
Rebecca laughed as she parted ways with Beth after they had finished the lab. At least now she would have company to fight off the insanity that Pete’s friends were sure to induce.
