Hayley did go to volunteer that day. She didn’t go straight home to do her homework though.
Instead she met with Rake at the coffee shop. He had begged for help with what he called a “plan of action”. It was almost time for his “date” with the English girl. Hayley and Rake sat together at one of the tables, sipping coffee and munching on cookies.
“So what do you think I should do?”
“I think you should be yourself, hon. I don’t think you’re going to impress her by dressing different or acting different. But she likes smart guys, and you’ve got that going for you.”
“Yeah,” Rake laughed. They were comfortably quiet for a few minutes. Rake reached over and touched Hayley’s face.
“You’re a good friend, do you know that?”
“I try.” They smiled at each other softly.
“What the hell are you doing, Hayley Jillian?” Mige’s voice made them both jump. Hayley looked at her boyfriend.
“I’m drinking coffee.”
“Here? Alone?”
“I’ll have you know that I’m not alone! I’m here with Rake.” She pointed to the boy who smiled weakly.
“Hey, Mige.”
“What the fuck, man? I thought we were friends! And here you are with my girl. This looks like a date.” Mige’s face turned red.
“It’s not a date. We’re here in broad day light where anyone could see us.” The girl struggled to keep her voice at an indoor level.
“Don’t you give me that. I saw him touching your face.”
“Oh, so clearly I must be having an affair because someone was touching my face. Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense.” Hayley snorted. Mige looked at her and reached under his shirt.
“Fine,” he undid a clasp and threw a silver chain onto the table. Dangling from it had been a small silver ring with a red stone in it. A favorite of Hayley’s. Her eyes welled with tears as she snatched it.
“Fine then, Mige. Just go if you don’t trust me.”
“You aren’t giving me much of a reason to, are you?” he roared. She said nothing, only sank back into her seat. Mige gave one final withering glare to Rake and walked out. As soon as the door closed behind him, Hayley did what any proper girl does.
She put her head down and cried.

Ville was walking, not entirely sure where he was going. The night had fallen, bitter and unmerciful. He shoved his hands in his pockets and bent his head, feeling the wind rip through his hair.
He continued on his lonely walk. Anytime he slowed down, he could feel the thoughts start to bubble in his brain. Why had he left? Did Bam like him at all? Did that kiss mean anything? Was he just an experiment for a boy who didn’t know what he wanted?
Just who was to blame here?
Somehow, he ended up where he always did when he was upset. Right in front of Hayley’s house.
Her mother’s car was gone. She was probably working late or something. Ville ran up to the front door. Before he could even lift his hand to knock, Hayley opened the door. He saw the red, swollen eyes and the way her lower lip was trembling.
Hayley took in the troubled look in his green eyes, and the way his whole body seemed to be weighed down. She opened her arms just as he opened his. They fell together, holding one another.
Somehow, Hayley drew them inside, still wrapped together. The door closed, and their sobs echoed through the empty house. Fingers tangled in hair, stroking, petting. And words of comfort were whimpered and sobbed out.
Then there were the declarations of love that they
always gave one another.
“Oh, Ville, I would die without you, I just know it.” Hayley cried.
“I couldn’t live without you.” Ville swore, holding his friend tighter.
When they had cried themselves out, they pulled apart and laughed. Hayley reached for the box of tissues and wiped at her friend’s face, gently and lovingly. He did the same for her.
They made their way to the couch. Ville noticed his friend was wearing her fuzzy pajama pants and ratty old hoodie. She’d gotten in their freshman year. It was too worn and tattered now to wear out of the house, but it made her feel better when she was sad.
He stretched out and put his head in her lap.
“So, you wanna go first?” he asked. She nodded miserably.
“Mige broke up with me.”
“Oh my God! I’m so sorry. Why?” Ville was shocked. They were the best couple.
“Because I was out at the coffee shop with Rake trying to help him figure out what to do on a date with Arabella. And Rake touched my face. Mige saw and jumped to conclusions. Next thing I know, he’s throwing my ring on the table and walking out. He’s also not friends with Rake anymore.” It was enough to make the tears well
in her eyes again.
“That’s not like Mige.” Ville frowned. Hayley could only shake her head.
“I know. What about you? Why are you crying?” she pushed his hair back from his face.
“Bam,”
“What did he do?” Hayley’s eyes narrowed. Ville chuckled.
“You’d be more threatening if your nose wasn’t running. He just… I don’t know, Hayley. I don’t know if he’s really ready to be in a relationship. I don’t even know if he’s gay.
And if he is gay, he’s certainly not out of the closet yet. I can’t be someone’s dirty little secret. I just can’t. Is that wrong of me?” his big green eyes glistened with his misery.
“This is my fault, Ville.” She sighed.
“No it’s not. What do you mean?” Ville was confused.
“I wanted you and Bam to get together. And Mige told me to stay out of it, so I got Rake to help me.” The confession came pouring out of her mouth. She looked at her friend.
“And if I hadn’t have done that, you and Bam probably wouldn’t have gotten into a fight. I’m sorry. I am so sorry. You have every reason to hate me now.”
“Hayley,” Ville’s voice was soft, comforting. “I’m not mad at you. Yeah, you meddled where you probably should have, but I think he and I both needed that push that you gave us.”
“Are you sure you’re not mad?” she sounded like a small child. Ville nodded and pushed himself up. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the top of her head.
“Oh, Ville, what am I going to do?” Hayley whimpered. He could only shake his head.
“If I knew, I’d tell you, kulta.”
