“Why did you agree to stay for dinner with him, Naida?” Naida was laying on the couch in the guest house with an arm over her head and a hand on her stomach. She wanted a moment to think, but obviously Lucy wasn’t going to give her that. “What possessed you to agree to remain anywhere in his vicinity? Do you still want him that bad?”
Naida heard the heavy thump as Lucy hit the back wall, but didn’t move from her spot on the couch. She heard Josh move to Lucy, listening to him speak quietly to her, thinking she wouldn’t hear him. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you, Lucy. There were a lot of emotions on her face when your father spoke of her time with him, and longing was not one of them.”
He was smart, Naida would give him that. She sat up and sighed. “Have you forgotten why we’re here, Lucy? We’re not here to stroke your father’s ego. We’re not here for you to get your revenge through him silently by siding with one of his neutral leaders. We’re here to stop Anthony Iero before he gets too strong. I can’t do that without you, so please, chill the fuck out.”
Lucy glared at Naida, but Naida didn’t pay any attention to the ice dragon as she walked into the bathroom, slamming the door. She stood staring at her reflection in the mirror for a moment, seeing the beautiful creature she had become and wondering if she could handle all the things that were bound to go wrong tonight.
She sighed as she heard a knock on the door, opening it to reveal Jeremy’s worried face. “Are you okay, baby?”
“I’m fine. I just needed a moment. What’s up?”
“The demons are here to escort us to dinner. Lucy is arguing with one of them about seating arrangements. I tried to get her to shut up, but she won’t listen to me. Spencer sent me to get you while him and Hayley dealt with it as best they can.
Naida sighed and walked out of the bathroom, walking toward the shouting. “I have to stay with Queen Naida at all times, I will not be put at the servant’s table.”
“Yes, you will, Lucy.” Naida let the anger fill her voice as she walked into the room. “We are guests here, you have no right to make request. Who are you?”
She turned to the demon Lucy had been arguing with and he bowed low. “Tomulus, your majesty. I was sent by my great king to see that you and your people arrived safely into our castle.”
Naida nodded. “Lead the way.” She glared at Lucy as she followed the demon out of the guest house, getting a quick hug from Spencer first. She had needed it. She liked Lucy because of her ability to be tough and outspoken in any situation, but today was not a day for her to undermine Naida’s power.

The first thing Naida noticed as she walked into the large dining room with Jeremy was the tall dark haired man sitting with Satan. They were talking animatedly until Naida walked into the room. They grew silent and Satan gestured to the seat beside him, opposite the dark man.
“Naida, you look a well rested.”
“I am, Lucifer, thank you.”
“Queen Naida of the mermaids, I would like you to meet Anthony Iero. He is one of my highest ranking dragon generals.”
Naida didn’t show any sign that she knew the name as she took Anthony’s hand, allowing him to kiss it gently. “It is a pleasure, your highness. I was just talking about you with Satan here. Seems you have two sides to you.”
“We all have two sides to ourselves, Anthony, mine just have a tendency to take turns.” Naida took her seat and stared at the man, feeling not at all subtle, she spoke before thinking about it. “I have heard rumors that you are planning on leaving Hell to pursue Earth.”
Anthony looked shocked for a moment, but recovered quickly. “I had planned on it, yes. Is that why you are down here, Naida? To stop me?”
“My first reason was to speak with Lucifer about being his neutral equal, but my other reason was to speak with you, yes. What would it take to at least get enough time for us to get an adequate amount of time to get us an army that at least has a small chance against you? I know that, with Lucifer as your master, you have a rather large army.” Naida was proud of how well she spoke without shaking or killing him on the spot, but killing one of Lucifer’s men in front of him and in his territory would not be good for her.
“He has his own army, Naida. I do not support his decision to try for Earth. But he can be forced to at least give more time to give Earth a chance. From what he has told me, I had assumed that he had informed your people months ago that he was coming. Has he not?” Satan was glaring at Anthony like he would melt him with a thought, and Naida had no doubt that he could.
“He has informed us of no such plans. We were informed from outside sources.”
“Is this true, Anthony?”
“Yes, master. I had forgotten to let them know.” Anthony looked as if he would kill Naida where she sat, but she was not phased, having had worse looks from scarier people.
“Then you must give her people time to gather their forces. That is not a request.” Satan turned to the food in front of him, but his words were solid and uncompromising.
“I ask for eight months.” Naida looked down at the meat in front of her and frowned as she fought to eat a little of it without seeming too upset that it was charred black.
“Four.”
"Seven.”
“Five.”
“Six and I will not go down on that one, Anthony.” Naida looked up at him, knowing that she would have gotten no more than four even if she had started at a year.
“You will settle on six, Anthony.” Satan spoke through a mouthful of food.
“Six then. My people will remain down here and continue our training while you get your miniscule armies together.”
“Fine.” Naida looked at the servant’s table on the other side of the room and the nod Spencer gave her, letting her know she did well. “Lucifer, I am sorry to say that we cannot stay much beyond dinner. If we only have six months, we must begin at once.”
“I understand, Naida.”
Dinner went slowly with little conversation, most of it between Naida and Lucifer. When it was all done, she excused her people and made her way back to the hole which had brought them down. She followed Jeremy, Spencer, and Hayley up the hole, having Lucy and Josh coming up behind her.
As soon as they were clean of the filth, she took the elevator up to Bill’s office, bursting through the door without announcement. “Start making phone calls, Billy. We have six months before Anthony shows up to get an adequate army together to meet him on the battlefield in Contract Valley.”
“What? You got us extra time?” Bill seemed shocked that Naida was back so soon, as did Frank and Alex who had been having some kind of meeting with him. “How?”
“Friends in high places. Please, don’t ask what you’re thinking. I don’t have the nerve left in me to tell that story again.” Naida felt exhausted. She needed to sleep for a few days and get her thoughts together before she collapsed. “I have to go sleep now. Just make the phone calls. Please.”
“I will, Nay. Take care of yourself.” Bill turned to the rolodex on his desk and started to flip through it, picking up the phone.
Naida nodded and started back toward elevator, meeting Rick on the way. “Naida, you’re back so soon.”
“I got us six months to get an army together, Daddy. It was the best I could do.” Naida felt the tears come to her eyes and couldn’t stop them as he wrapped his arms around her. “It was horrible. I can’t do that again.”
“Shh, it’s alright, love. You’ve given us more time than we need to get people here and start training them in hard combat. Go downstairs and rest. You’re going to need it.” He kissed her gently and she nodded, moving to the elevators.
She made it down to her cavern without collapsing, until Jeremy came out of the bathroom from getting the sulfur smell off his skin. He ran to her and wrapped his arms around her as she collapsed. “I’m sorry, Jeremy, so sorry. I should have told you. I didn’t mean for it to be such a shock for you.”
“It is okay, Naida. I’m not mad. You explained it to me. You had no choice. I didn’t leave, did I?” Jeremy moved her to the bed and started to help her take off the guarders as she continued to cry. “Let’s get the sulfur smell off you and then we’ll go to sleep, okay?”
Naida nodded as Jeremy picked her up to carry her into the bathroom. She didn’t know what she would have done today without him. But, later, as she crawled under the cool sheets with his arms wrapped around her, she was glad she had found him.
