Chapter 15: A Very Eventful Birthday
∞♥♥♥♥∞
LaKisha had found it funny when we told her about Colin’s first word. I know she is where he had even gotten the word “mama” from. She referred to herself so much as “mama” that Colin must have heard her, and therefore said it as his first word. I just hoped Bliss didn’t have that word drilled into her head as well. Ah, man! Why couldn't he have called Chris mama instead? It just had to be me. Now I knew Chris was never going to let that go. I would forever be the woman of our relationship.
Anyway, Colin said mama for LaKisha, and she thought it was the sweetest thing. Then again, she thought everything the babies did was sweet. She had even brought them two little stuffed bunnies. They were small little rag doll type things that the twins could easily hold. Colin’s had a blue shirt on, and Bliss’ had a pink shirt. Bliss’ also had little pink bows on the ears. Chris and I couldn’t help smiling when we saw the huge smiles the twins got on their faces when taking the bunnies from LaKisha.
“I think they’re a hit,” I told her as I watched Colin suck on one of his bunny’s ears while Bliss happily shook hers.
LaKisha grinned. “My daughter loved small stuffed animals as a baby, so I knew these two would too.”
“Well, they love it,” Chris said, grinning even huger when Bliss began to giggle.
I placed my arm around him and rested my head on his shoulder. Watching him watch out children, looking so happy, was something that would never get old.

The time just seemed to fly. It was now the twins’ first birthday. I could hardly believe it had been a year since Blake and I held our babies for the first time. It seems like just yesterday, I was looking into their eyes, thinking how tiny and precious they were. They were still precious, but now they were slightly bigger. Not by much, but you cold tell they were definitely growing. They loved to crawl all over the place, and would grab anything in sight. They sure kept Blake and I on our toes. I was glad they were sleeping through the night by now. I remembered that first month. I thought for sure I was going to die from exhaustion. Even with Blake helping me, it was exhausting getting up what felt like every two hours.
Anyway, I woke up that morning with Blake practically on top of me. I smirked. I was used to it by now. That boy tossed and turned more than anyone I know.
I gently shook him awake. “Baby, it’s time to wake up. We have to get the twins ready.”
Blake didn’t move.
I sighed, and shook him again. He could be such a pain to wake up. He was such a late owl, yet, he loved to sleep in until noon if he could. Since we had the twins, noon was most definitely not an option. He knew that, but it didn’t stop me from having to fight to get him awake every morning.
“Blakey, come on. The twins are going to wake up soon. It’s their birthday, you know.” I smiled.
He opened one eye. “One year old.”
I nodded. “Yes, Sir! Can you believe it? It seems like only yesterday we were holding them for the first time.”
Blake yawned, then sat up.
I stretched, glad to have his weight off of me, as much as I loved to hold him at night.
“I’m surprised they’re not crying already. It’s ten in the morning,” Blake said, looking at the clock. Usually, the twins had us up by eight.
“Yeah, well, maybe now that they are a year old, they like to sleep in a little longer,” I said.
Suddenly, we could hear Bliss’ cries coming from her room.
Blake smirked, and patted my shoulder. “You spoke too soon.”
I kissed him, then climbed out of bed. I already had my pajama bottoms on, but I threw a T-shirt on as well.
Blake climbed out and put a T-shirt of his own on. He had been wearing his boxers. Nighttime was the only time he wore boxers—except for the times he chose to sleep naked of course.
“It’s my turn for Bliss, and yours for Colin,” I announced.
Blake nodded.
We didn’t like to play favoritism, so we would take turns on which baby we got ready. I had gotten Colin ready the day before, and Blake had gotten Bliss ready.
I headed into Bliss’ room, just as Colin started to cry. I was surprised he hadn’t work up earlier. His sister was crying so loudly.
When I got into the room, I picked her up, and gently rocked her in my arms. “Baby, what’s wrong? Don’t cry, sweetie. Daddy’s here now. Happy Birthday! I’m gonna change you and get you dressed then you can have breakfast. Dada and I bought you a whole bunch of presents for your birthday!”
She was still crying, though her screams had toned down just a bit.
I lay her down on the changing table and changed her. She was soaked, and had pooped as well. I figured a clean diaper would make her feel much better. However, even when she was clean, she didn’t stop crying. Nor did she stop crying when I put on the special birthday dress I had just bought her. She looked adorable in it. It was white with a pink and white striped band around the waist. The straps were pink and white striped as well, and it had a little pink birthday cake on the chest. I put lacy pink socks on her feet, and had white dress shoes for when we went out. I had a pink headband with a bow on it for her hair. She had a little coating of light brown hair by now. It was finally starting to grow, and I enjoyed brushing it with a super soft bristle brush. Still, by the time she was dressed, she still wasn’t done crying.
I worried that she was sick, so I felt her forehead, and was horrified to feel how warm she was. I quickly brought her to the bathroom, and took out the baby thermometer. It was ear thermometer, so I put it in her ear, and waited for the results. When it beeped, I looked. She had a very high temperature.
“Blake, come here. Quick!” I yelled. I had tears in my eyes. I was so scared.
Blake came rushing in with Colin in his arms. Had I not been so worried about Bliss, I would have smiled at how cute Colin looked. He had a little plaid suit on, and Blake had slicked his hair back.
“Bliss has a fever. I’m going to take her to the doctors,” I said.
“What?” Blake walked over to Bliss and felt her forehead. “Oh no. Do you need me to call Dr. Rinecliff for you?”
“I’ll do it. Can you take her please?” I asked, trying not to cry. Neither of the twins had ever been sick before. I was so worried.
Blake nodded. “Sure.” He took Bliss from me, and then I headed to the phone. I silently prayed that everything would be all right.

I was worried about Bliss, but not too worried. I knew that babies got sick all the time. Still, I was a little worried—just not as concerned as Chris was. I put the twins in their highchairs, and then went about making their baby cereal for them. They both loved their cereal with bananas, so I made sure to put those on as well.
I was glad that Bliss had finally stopped crying.
Finally, I fed the twins, multitasking, by feeding them at the same time. Thank God for two hands, right?
Except, I noticed that Bliss wasn’t eating as good as she usually did.
Chris got off the phone. “The doctor said I can bring her in right now.”
“Eat, baby, please?” I said to Bliss. I turned to Chris. “She won’t eat.”
“I’m definitely taking her in now.” Chris took Bliss out of her highchair, and held her close, gently rocking her.
“I’ll go with you,” I offered.
Chris shook his head. “No. You stay here with Colin. There’s no use dragging him out. He doesn’t appear to be sick.” He nodded at Colin, who was hungrily eating his cereal with no reserve.
I panicked. “Chris, I can’t take care of him by myself! I’ve always had you to help me!”
Chris headed to Bliss’ room for something. “You’ll do fine. I don’t want to drag Colin out. We won’t be gone long, I promise.” He came out a moment later.
I saw that Bliss now had white dress shoes on. I took it those were what he had gone back into her room for. He took out her little pink coat from the closet and put it on her, then he gave me a quick kiss on the lips. “We’ll be back.”
“But Chris…”
Chris didn’t hear my protests. He had already left the house.
I sighed. I looked back at Colin, and fed him the last bite of cereal. “Well, baby, it’s just you and me for a while.”
Colin smiled at me. “Mama!”
I smacked my forehead, and Colin laughed hysterically.
Aye-Yi-Yi…

“Bliss?”
I looked up, and smiled with relief as I saw the nurse standing in the doorway and smiling at us.
“The doctor is ready to see you,” the nurse said.
I carried Bliss into the examining room. She was still whimpering a little, and it broke my heart. I could stand to have her be in any kind of pain. I knew she must be if she was burning up and crying.
“What’s wrong with this beautiful little girl?” the nurse asked, using a baby voice, for she was bent down to smile at Bliss.
“She has a fever. She doesn’t have an appetite, and she is crying a lot,” I answered.
The nurse took out an underarm thermometer, and pressed it under Bliss’ right arm.
Bliss cried a little, so I stroked her hair to calm her.
“We just have to see how high your temperature is so that we can make you all better,” the nurse soothed her. “This is such a pretty dress!”
I smiled. “It’s her birthday today. She’s one year old.”
The nurse gasped. “One year old? Lucky you. Are you’re daddies going to give you presents today?” the nurse asked Bliss.
Bliss stopped crying, and smiled.
The nurse and I smiled too.
The thermometer beeped, and the nurse took it out and looked at it. “My, that is high. Well, Dr. Rinecliff will be in in just a moment. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Her symptoms are mild. I see a lot of babies come in here with the same symptoms. It’s usually something small like a minor case of the flu or an ear infection.”
I nodded. “All right. Thank you.”
The nurse turned to Bliss, and gently stroked her hair. “Get well soon, Bliss. Happy birthday! No one wants to be sick on their birthday, huh? The doctor will give you something to make you feel better.”
She said goodbye to me, and then left.
I sighed, and gently rocked Bliss in my arms. She was starting to whimper again. I prayed to God she would be all right. I didn’t know what I’d do if she wasn’t.

After I had fed and changed Colin, I wasn’t sure what to do with him. I decided to let him crawl around on the floor and play with his toys while I worked on some new music. I was thinking about putting a new album. Nothing was set in stone yet, but I was writing songs for it. Chris was writing too. I think we both wanted to get into our music again. We knew we’d have to work around our babies’ schedules, but I knew we could work something out. Even if we just toured small clubs or whatever. It was just a thought for the time being though.
Anyway, I grabbed my pen and my notebook that I wrote my music in, then sat down on the couch with my guitar and began to strum along, pausing once in a while to write down the notes.
I was lost in the music, for the next time I looked at my watch, I realized a half hour had passed.
“Wow,” I said. “Are you doing okay, Colin?” I looked down at the floor, and saw that Colin was nowhere in sight. I panicked a little. “Colin?” I set my guitar, paper, and pen aside, and got up, searching the family room. “Colin? You’re scaring Dada. Where are you?” I headed into all the rooms, my heart racing harder and harder with every room he wasn’t in. Finally, I got to Colin’s room, and my heart settled. He was there, sitting on the floor surrounded by some white powdery stuff. Wait, what? I rushed over to him, and found that he must have crawled over to the low table that Chris and I kept the diaper changing supplies on, and gotten into the baby powder. We didn’t like to keep the supplies on the changing table itself because it made it too crowded. “Colin, what did you do?”
Colin had powder all over his little hands and face. There was also a ton of it all over the floor. Thank God we had hardwood floors.
Colin looked up at me, his brown eyes filling with tears. His bottom lip started to tremble, and I knew what that meant.
“Oh no,” I said.
Sure enough, Colin burst into tears.
I sighed, and picked him up. “Baby, don’t cry. Dada’s not mad at you. It’s my own fault for not watching you better. You were just bored, right?” I kissed the top of his head, glad that that creepy dent was now grown in. I sat down with him in his rocker, and began to rock him. Colin calmed down a little.
“Do you want to hear the new song Daddy and I wrote for you?” I asked. We had written him and Bliss a song to commemorate their first birthday. We had written them a song on the day they were born as well, and planned on writing them a new song with each new year of their lives. We had been waiting for a special moment to sing it today, obviously when Chris and Bliss were here too, but I figured a practice time now wouldn’t hurt anyone. “I don’t have my guitar right now, but I can sing a pretty good a cappella,” I said. I knew Colin couldn’t understand what I was saying, but at least it seemed to be calming him down. “It’s called, ‘Our happiness.’” I began so softly sing the song.

“So, is it serious?” I asked with worry when Dr. Rinecliff finished her examination.
Dr. Rinecliff smiled. “She’s going to be just fine. She has a mild ear infection. I already gave her some ibuprofen to reduce the fever. If her fever still doesn’t go down, you can give her another. Make sure it’s at least six hours from now though. As for her ears, I’m prescribing her with some ear drops. The infection is only in her right ear. Make sure you give her two drops in the morning, and two drops at night, starting tonight before she goes to bed. The infection should clear up in about a week.” Dr. Rinecliff wrote down the script, and then tore it off her tablet, and handed it to me.
“Thank you,” I said, taking it from her. “Do I need to keep her away from Colin?”
Dr. Rinecliff smiled. “No need to do that. Ear infections aren’t contagious.” She winked at me.
“Okay. I just wanted to be sure,” I said.
“As every good parent would,” she assured me. “Also, Bliss might be fussy because she is getting her teeth in. She’s a little late at getting teeth, but it’s not entirely uncommon. Does Colin have any teeth yet?”
I shook my head. “No, ma’am. Not that I noticed anyway.”
“Well, I’m sure he’ll begin teething soon. You two might want to give them some teething rings. Babies like it best when you freeze the teething rings. The cold helps sooth the sore area,” Dr. Rinecliff explained.
I nodded. “Thank you. Blake and I have some. We just never got to use them yet.”
“They’re for the babies, not you and your husband,” she joked.
I laughed, and snapped my fingers. “Darn!”
“Well, you have a good birthday, Bliss. The best you can, considering the circumstances.” Dr. Rinecliff kissed the top of Bliss’ head.
Bliss smiled.
“Such a cute baby,” Dr. Rinecliff stated as she gently stroked Bliss’ cheek.
“Well, thank you for all you’ve done,” I said, shaking the doctor’s hand.
“Anytime. Don’t mention it. I’m just happy to make this baby girl feel better.” She gave Bliss’ cheek one last stoke, then nodded and smiled at me. “See you at the twins’ next checkup.”
I smiled, and nodded back. “See you,” I said, giving her a little wave.
I left the office and paid the bill at the front desk.
“Come on, baby girl! Let’s go get you medicine,” I then said to Bliss.
Bliss smiled at me, and I felt a whole lot better.

Colin seemed to be getting tired. So was I, actually.
“Well, let’s get you washed up, then you can take a nap with Dada.” I brought Colin over to the bathroom sink, and used a washcloth to wash the powder off his face and hands. Then, I set him in his playpen, while I cleaned the powder off the floor.
Finally, I walked back into the room, and saw that Colin was sitting up, looking at me with his big brown eyes.
“Do you want to nap with Dada?” I picked him up and lay down on the couch with him. I let him lie down on my chest. He closed his little eyes, and grabbed one of my fingers.
I smiled, and stroked his head with my free hand. Then, I closed my eyes, and let sleep take over me.
B∞C
I got Bliss’ ear drops from the pharmacy, and then headed home.
“Are you hungry? You didn’t eat anything for breakfast.” I felt Bliss’ forehead. I grinned. “At least you’re a lot cooler now.”
I opened the door, and walked into the room. I shut the door behind me, and smiled at the sight I saw. Blake was sleeping on his back on the couch, and Colin was sleeping on his chest. Colin had the index finger of Blake’s right hand clenched tightly in his little left hand.
I had to get a picture. I set Bliss in the playpen, and then grabbed my camera. I took a couple shots of Blake and Colin, thinking how perfect the pictures would be for the scrapbook.
Next, I went to make lunch for everyone. We would go out for dinner tonight. Right now, I knew the twins needed their lunch and a good nap. Then, maybe I could take a nap with my husband by my side. I sighed, content.

I was glad to hear that all Bliss had was an ear infection. Since it was the middle of May (the sixteenth to be exact), and since it was Seattle, we didn’t have to worry about bundling Bliss up too much. We went to Chuck E. Cheese’s for dinner later that evening.
My parents, Jordin, Sanjaya, Shyamali, Kristi, Ethan, Cisco, and KJ all joined us. I wished the others could be there, like the rest of our top ten friends and Chris’ parents, but they lived so far away. Chris and I planned on taking the twins to Virginia in the summer though to visit with their other grandparents.
Anyway, we had dinner, (we broke the twins’ pizza into very small bites), and then let them open their gifts. Bliss got a ton of dresses, sun bonnets, and stuffed animals. Pretty soon we were going to run out of room in her room for stuffed animals. I swear she had a stuffed animal for every kind of animal there was. She also got dolls, as well as toys to rattle and shake. She got a new teething ring shaped as a crown, which couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I was starting to wonder if the twins would ever get teeth. It was about time! I had looked in Colin’s mouth upon hearing that Bliss was getting her first teeth, and sure enough, he was cutting a couple teeth in the front. Just the very tips were poking through, and it was only noticeable if you looked closely.
Colin got a lot of cute clothes, stuffed animals, and toy cars that were to big to put in his mouth. One was even a remote control car. He also got little rattling toys to play with. He got a turtle shaped teething ring. I didn’t even know they made teething rings in shapes! It was cute.
“Do you two want to go play on the jungle gym before we have the cake?” I asked Colin and Bliss.
Both twins smiled.
Chris and I smiled too.
“Well, before you do anything, you’re going to have to wash those messy faces and hands off!” Jordin said, grinning at the twins.
Chris laughed. “That might help, huh?”
He took a napkin and cleaned Bliss off while I cleaned Colin off.
“You boys have fun! And girl,” Cisco winked at Bliss on that last add.
“Can I play too?” Sanjaya asked, getting out of his chair.
“Uh, sure?” I said, a little amused that a grown boy wanted to play in the jungle gym.
“Yes!” Sanjaya kicked off his shoes, and then ran ahead of us to the jungle gym tunnels. He climbed right in.
“Babies must play,” Shyamali quipped.
Jordin hid her laughter behind her hand.
Chris and I slipped out of our own shoes, and took the twins’ shoes off, then we went over to the tunnels.
I let Colin in first, and followed behind him, letting him lead the way. He seemed to be enjoying the tunnels already. He had never been in anything like that before. I knew both him and Bliss would love it, for they loved to crawl. I figured crawling in tunnels was even more fun for them.
Bliss was behind me, and Chris was behind her.
Colin raced ahead. Man, he could crawl fast!
“Colin, come back to dada! You’re too fast, silly!”
Colin just giggled at my plea.
He got to a section that had a clear plastic window. He crawled in and pounded his hands on the window. I smiled, and came up behind him. I took Colin’s had and waved with him when we saw our friends and family. They smiled up at us and waved back.
Chris and Bliss came in with us then, and waved and smiled as well.
Then, Colin climbed back into the tunnels, and headed for the slide.
“Do you want to slide, baby?” I asked him.
“Slide!” Colin said, clapping his hands together.
I looked back at Chris, who looked equally as surprised. “So I’m not the only one who heard that?” I asked.
Chris grinned, and shook his head. “No, I heard it. You better listen to the boy. He wants to slide!”
So, we did. I put Colin on my lap, and held him tight. “You ready?” I asked.
“Slide!” Colin said again.
So, I pushed off, and we rushed down the slide. Colin laughed hysterically the whole way down.
When we got down, I stepped aside, and held him. “Did you like your first slide?” I asked.
“Slide!” Colin said again, clapping his hands and laughing.
I grinned. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
“I got a picture!” Jordin said, holding up her camera.
I smiled. I hadn't even seen her there. “Thanks.”
I could hardly wait to see the picture.
B∞C
I slid down with Bliss after Blake had slid down with Colin. Like her brother, Bliss had laughed hard on the way down.
Jordin flashed a picture of us coming down, and I was grateful to her for that. It was going to be one awesome baby book, knew.
“Daddy,” Bliss suddenly said, smiling up at me.
“What did you say?” I asked.
“Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!” Bliss laughed, and clapped her hands together again.
I looked at Blake, who was grinning at me.
“Congratulations,” he said, “Daddy instead of Dada. I have yet to hear Dada.”
I grinned. “You’ll hear it soon. I promise!” I was sure Colin would pick it up, now that he could say a word like slide.
The rest of our time at Chuck E. Cheese’s had been fun. I got a ton of pictures of the twins with cake smeared all over their faces and hands. It was the cutest thing I’d ever seen.
Blake’s parents watched them while the rest of us had a ski ball tournament. Cisco won, and would not stop bragging. How obnoxious. Ah well. He was a good guy.
Later, when the twins, Blake, and I arrived home, Blake and I put them in their playpen, and we sang to them the new song we had written for them. They both smiled, and seemed to love it. I was so proud!
We then got the twins ready for bed, and I made sure to put Bliss’ ear drops in. I took her temperature again, and was so glad her fever was gone.
By the time we were done, and the twins were sleeping soundly in their rooms, I was so satisfied.
“It was a really good day today, aside from Bliss’ sickness scare.” I told Blake as I stripped down to my boxer briefs in our bedroom, and put my dirty clothes in the hamper.
I turned around to face Blake, and saw that he had put all his clothes in the hamper. “You’re right. It was a good day. Care to celebrate it?”
I grinned. “It’s been a while.”
“Far too long, baby.” He walked over to me, took me in his arms, and kissed me passionately.
I moaned into the kiss.
“These have to go,” Blake said, tugging at my boxer briefs.
I slid them off wordlessly.
He then backed me to the bed, and soon, he was lying down on top of me on the bed.
I closed my eyes, and let him do as he pleased. Yes, this day was definitely a very good day.
