We were standing by the trunk of Kaoru’s car as he unlocked it. Shinya put in the luggage he had carried out. Saika had my purse, and was setting it on the backseat. Die put the last piece of luggage into the trunk. “Suji…”
“You’ve had your say,” Toshiya interrupted. “Now I want mine.”
Kaoru shut the trunk, and helped Kyo grab the redhead by the arms, though not as gently as they had taken me by mine. “We’ll be over there.” They dragged Die across the road, Saika and Shinya following.
I watched them for a few seconds before I glanced up at Toshiya. His behavior had me totally off kilter. I had no idea what to think. “Toshiya-san?” I noticed that he had some new bruises on his face, and his lip had a fresh cut. Automatically I touched his chin to turn his head some. “Oh God, Die did this, didn’t he?”
“Er, yeah, but…”
I winced. “He found out you stayed at my place and I slept… er, with you?”
He tilted his head some. “Kinda, but…”
“I’m so sorry! I’ll explain it all to him, and…”
He caught my shoulders in his hands. “Suji, listen to me! None of that matters.”
I frowned. “No? But…”
“No.” He sighed. “Maybe this was something that was coming for a long time.”
“It was?” What the hell was he talking about? What was something that was coming for a long time? Die beating him up for hiding out at my place? It was the only thing that made sense, but yet it didn’t quite make sense. Shaking my head I tried to dislodge the cobwebs that were so obviously making me stupid at the moment. “Wait, what was?”
“Die and I fighting,” he answered. “Su…”
“But it only happened last night!” I cried. “And he should understand after what happened. I mean…”
Stepping nearer he wet his lips with the tip of his tongue, and took a deep breath. “No, it’s more than that. You see…”
I wasn’t listening now. I was frowning, staring off at nothing in particular. “But maybe if I explain that it hadn’t been your fault. I’m the one who asked to stay with you. You didn’t have to agree. Oh, but he might then say that I should have just gone home with him like he wanted, but I hadn’t known then that I was so… bothered by what had happened, and…”
Anything else I’d been about to say was silenced by his lips on mine. I was dimly aware of a distant wailing, and knew it was Die, but then all thought fled as sensation kicked in. I knew that kiss. That kiss was familiar. Those lips were familiar. I’d kissed those lips before. No! I’d been kissed by those lips before. But… I’d never kissed Toshiya before. I’d know if I… I pulled away, a hand lifting to my lips, touching them in shock.
“Suji…” he entreated, one hand reaching out for me, his voice low and deep.
Shaking my head I backed away. The third kisser. The mystery kisser. That night, the night Die and Shinya had both kissed me so I’d know who I was attracted to and could make a choice between them. That kiss had haunted me. It had invaded my waking moments and my dreams. And now I knew who it had been. Toshiya. The one I’d always loved. The one who had never loved me. The one who had avoided me for years.
“Suji, please, let me explain,” he entreated.
For the first time in my life I hit him. The loud resounding crack from my slap filled the air, and his head snapped sideways. How could he? How could he kiss me that night? Not just kiss me, but touch me! He also touched me! He called me to help him when he was hurt. He slept in my home. He shared a bed with me! My vision blurred, and my chest hurt with the strength of the sobs that were trying to force their way out. With an anguished cry I ran.
Die saw me run towards them, and he broke from the other four who had held him back when he’d tried to rush forward. Seeing Toshiya kiss me had turned him into the bull in the china shop. Now he met me halfway and yanked me near, one hand lifting. “Stay the fuck away, Toshiya,” he threatened in a voice that shook with rage, his hand trembling.
“Suji, let me explain…” Toshiya entreated from a few feet away. “You have to understand why I did what I did.”
I pressed my face deeper into Die’s chest. Right now this was the only safe place. Right now, this was the only sanity left. Right now, I would have gladly cheered him on if he’d been so inclined to kick the shit out of Toshiya.
“You’ve done enough,” Die growled. “Suji and I are leaving. You can tell Mama and Papa we love them, but we’re not coming back.”
What? I pulled back to look at Die. Had this whole situation finally driven him mental? What the hell was he talking about? “What?”
“You and I are getting married, and we’re going to…”
Okay, maybe he’d always been mental. Pulling away I shook my head, unaware I was backing up until I backed right into Toshiya who wrapped his arms around me. “Suji… I love you.”
Sixteen years I’d wanted to hear those words come out of his mouth. Sixteen years. Why? Why couldn’t he have said them years ago? Why couldn’t he have said them when I first came back? Why couldn’t he have said them before Die said them? Why? Why? Why? Desperate I glanced at Shinya. Shinya had never let me down. For God sakes, we’d learned to kiss together!
Shinya rushed forward as a small whimper escaped me. This was too much. This was too fast. This was surreal. But he was solid, and real. He was Shinya, the Shinya I’d grown up with, except this time he was saving me from his brothers. “This is too much for her,” he stated as he caught my hand in his and pulled me away from them.
“He’s right,” Saika moved between me and her brothers, a protective shield. “That’s enough now.”
“She has to…”
“She has to do nothing right now,” Kaoru interrupted Die and held his hands up to keep the other two back. “Let it go for now. You’ve both declared yourselves…”
“I haven’t explained anything yet,” Toshiya argued. “She has to understand why I did it.”
“She will,” Kyo nodded. “But not right now. Look at her! She’s shaking and can’t even look at either of you. Do you really want to push it?”
Kaoru sighed. “We’re taking her in my car.” His gaze dared them to argue.
Die glared at Toshiya. “You just had to fucking push things, didn’t you?”
“Me? You’re the one who was telling her she was going to marry you without giving her a choice!” Toshiya snapped back.
They were leading me to the car. Kyo sighed. “We have a problem though. Taking her home means they’ll just keep trying to get to her.”
“You’re right,” Kaoru nodded. He tapped his fingers on the hood in a rhythmic beat, thinking. “I have an idea.”
…………………
“What the fuck do you mean she’s not coming home?” Die exploded.
Kaoru was calmly serving himself some dinner. “Exactly what I said, she’s not coming home. Suji-chan needs some time to sort things out and come to grips with the fact that Toshiya does love her. The two of you sucker punched her, repeatedly I might add, and she needs to catch her breath.”
“Where is she?” Toshiya asked with a better hold on his temper than his red-headed brother.
“Now why should we tell you?” Kyo snorted. “You’d be over there harassing her…”
“I don’t harass,” Toshiya snapped. “Do I look like Daisuke?”
“Screw you, asshole.” Die then turned on Shinya who had snickered. “And why the fuck aren’t you more upset? Huh?”
Shinya arched an amused brow. “I have no need to be.”
“How the hell is that possible?” Toshiya demanded. “I thought you loved her too?”
“I do. And she loves me too,” Shinya nodded.
Die turned towards Kaoru, eyes wide. “She chose Shin-chan? Is that what he’s trying to insinuate? That she chose the most feminine person in this family? The one who’d probably faint if he ever saw a naked female? The one who wouldn’t know what to do with his dick even if he had colored diagrams? Are you shitting me?”
“Shinya!” Mama gasped.
“Go to hell,” Shinya hissed and left the table.
“You know, more and more I’m starting to like that particular brother of ours,” Kyo chuckled as Die picked yakitori and gyoza out of his hair.
“Kaoru…”
“Don’t even ask,” the eldest shook his head at Toshiya. “She’s safe, and when she’s ready she’ll call me and I’ll go get her.”
“Saika…”
“Saika won’t say anything because she knows it will negate any deals we made about a certain friend of hers,” Kaoru reached for another gyoza. “Die, you have a noodle dangling from your ear.”
