Ch 15
Carrie had long ago given up her façade of listening to Mark’s voice as he blathered on about what she and everyone else needed to do during the rest of the studio time for the day. It had been hard enough to dedicate herself to her vocals because of the different questions in her head; there was no way she could force herself to pay attention to Mark’s asinine prattling. Carrie slouched in her chair as she tried to figure out what it meant that she thought of Kelly as a boyfriend of sorts, even though she wasn’t attracted to the other singer.
Matt rolled his eyes and wondered why Mark had called everyone in for a conference call. He knew the other man had called Carrie and told her what was expected for this week’s recordings. Either Mark trusted everyone to do their job’s, or he didn’t; and if Mark didn’t, then Matt really wanted to know what was going to happen when the man came back. He scowled as he imagined Mark would probably find something wrong with tracks, in spite of the fact that Mark had them sending the cuts of the songs daily. If he got into one more fight with his girlfriend over his late work hours, he would have something to say to Mark when the man got back to town.
Carrie glanced up at the ceiling as she tried to think of some moment, or one particular thing that Kelly had said, that had changed her feelings. She couldn’t think of anything, and she hadn’t been able to over the weekend; and that fact scared Carrie. It would be one thing if she knew what had changed her perception of her friendship with Kelly, but because she couldn’t, she thought that it meant everything had been a part of the process. Carrie couldn’t really comprehend that somehow their friendship had turned into deeper feelings. If she hadn’t realized that it made her happy to make Kelly happy, she wouldn’t even be questioning anything.
Matt smirked when Mark said Carrie’s name again. Only Carrie could get away with not answering Mark right away, and he didn’t blame her one bit. He snickered as the impatient man called for Carrie again. He looked up to see how the other people in the room were reacting; some looked amused, though there were a few people that looked disgruntled and wanted the conference call to be over with already. Matt snickered and looked at Carrie as Mark asked if Carrie was in the room.
Carrie was relieved that at least she could talk about her day at the studio when Kelly called her later. She didn’t want to mess up her friendship with Kelly, not when she wasn’t sure what she felt for the other girl. She knew it would be so much easier to sort out her feelings if she could talk to Kelly; after all, Kelly had gone through something similar, but she didn’t want to make Kelly uncomfortable or give her friend false hope that there could be something between them. Carrie also felt like she couldn’t talk to Tommy. Tommy would have so many questions for her, probably the ones she was currently asking herself, and she didn’t have any answers. She could already picture how Tommy would react, and Carrie really didn’t think Tommy congratulating her on nabbing Kelly Clarkson would help matters any. Or worse, he would immediately call Hector and try to arrange a double date.
Matt raised his eyebrows as Carrie remained silent even though Mark was now demanding to know why Carrie had wandered off during the conference call. He would have laughed at how everyone else in the room wouldn’t answer, but he wanted to know why Carrie hadn’t ended the joke. He nudged Carrie’s foot and was surprised when she glared at him. “Are you going to answer him?”
Carrie would have asked what Matt was talking about, but she suddenly realized that Mark was not happy. She angrily sighed when Mark shouted her name. She really wished he were in town so that she could walk out of the room without answering. Carrie got up out of her seat and leaned closer to the phone to ensure that Mark would hear her and shut up long enough for her to speak. “I have better things to do than waste time listening to you. Don’t call again until you’re in town.” Carrie ended the call and pushed her chair back so that she could make her way out of the filled room. She ignored it when Matt and a few techs called after her. She couldn’t sit around when she didn’t know what the hell was going on with her personal life. She needed to record, not sit around like a moron who didn’t know the difference between a high C and a low F.
Matt came to a halt when he reached the doorway; he didn’t know if he should follow Carrie, or if he should make an excuse to the studio crew. He worked for Carrie, not for the studio, so he thought it was best to try to keep things amicable with the crew incase Carrie’s joke had angered the crew. He knew Mark would call the studio back and probably take out his anger on the crew. “I think we all need a break after that call. Say ten minutes?” Matt was out the door the moment he saw a few nods from various people. He knew where Carrie was going, and he was positive that he would need the ten minutes to talk Carrie down. Matt just barely caught the door to the booth as it closed behind Carrie. “I know you’re frustrated, Care. We’re all frustrated.”
Carrie rubbed her forehead and tried mentally to will her headache to recede. She wished it was only Mark that she was upset about. Carrie stared at the glass in front of her so that she didn’t have to turn and face Matt. “Yeah, I’m going to stay in here until everyone else gets over the call.” Carrie managed to smile as she remembered how she had ended the call, even though she would probably regret the outburst the next day. “Shit. I’m going to be getting calls from him all day now. I probably fucked up recording for today too.” The crew wouldn’t want to be around her.
Matt wasn’t about to lie to Carrie and say that she was wrong. He didn’t think Carrie should be upset with her behavior though, anyone else could have said the same to Mark if they had any guts. “It was funny. I wish I could have seen the look on his face when he realized that you hung up on him.” Matt smiled and crossed his arms over his chest while he took a few steps toward Carrie. He was concerned for his boss, but if Carrie had already started to think about the repercussions of her actions, he knew she wasn’t too furious. “We just have got to hang in for five more days. Everything will go back to normal when Mark gets back, Care.”
Carrie shut her eyes at the phrase because she wanted everything to be normal, but she couldn’t see how it could happen. She couldn’t stop thinking about what she had realized, and she didn’t think she would stop until she had answers. Unfortunately, the only way she could get answers would be to spend time with Kelly. She knew she would be caught up in her thoughts around the other girl, which would undoubtedly make Kelly think something was wrong, and since she didn’t have any answers, it could turn out very badly. Carrie walked past Matt and sat down on the floor near one of the consoles. If she couldn’t be around Kelly, then she really couldn’t figure out her feelings for the other singer. “All this and I don’t even know if I want it.” Carrie sighed disgustedly at her inability to know what she felt. She didn’t even know if she wanted their friendship to change. Carrie glared at the floor and wondered if she could ever consider Kelly sexually attractive.
Matt hadn’t heard Carrie’s mumbled words, but it was easy to see that the situation had stressed his friend. Frankly, he was surprised that Carrie hadn’t already resorted to her completely professional attitude in the studio, an attitude that most people found cold and abrasive. Matt sat down on the floor next to Carrie. “Why don’t we just call it a day? Mark’s probably going to tie up the lines here, we won’t get anything done.” When Carrie turned her heads towards him, Matt started to actually consider his suggestion. He needed a change of pace as much as Carrie. “Everyone will be happy for the time off, it’s not like they won’t get paid, and we can just hang. Come on, we can go to the batting cages, and then out for some beers.”
Carrie liked Matt’s idea; it could give her the sense of normalcy she had lost over the weekend. She also hadn’t had time to hang out with Matt because of the new recording schedule caused by Mark. “Wouldn’t you rather go home and spend time with your girl? I’m sure you could sweet talk your way into a make up session, what with coming home early and all.” Her smile faltered for a moment when Matt grinned, though only because it made her realize she would rather spend the time with Kelly just like Matt would prefer time with Diana. “It might even get you some leniency for tomorrow night, cuz you know we’re gonna be in here forever if we leave today.”
Matt chuckled because Carrie was probably right; they had stayed late in the studio every night so far since Mark had left. “Well, yeah, but I want to relax, hang out with you. I know we’re around each other all day, but we haven’t been able to go out and have fun. I think you and I both could use some serious guy time right now.” Matt laughed when Carrie hit him for the comment, but he put his arm around her shoulder anyway and brought her in for a half hug. “Come on, I bet you the first three rounds that I can hit more balls than you.” Matt jumped up to his feet and waited for Carrie to do the same.
Carrie pretended to think about the deal, even though she knew it was probably the best thing she could do for herself at the moment. “You’re on, but we aren’t using the softball cages.” Carrie got up to her feet and smirked at her friend. “If we’re gonna bet on this, then we’re gonna use the higher speed cages.” She knew the harder challenge would be better for letting of some steam than if she had hit every ball from the softball setting.
Matt just grinned and shook his head. “I’ll go let everyone know that we’re canceling recording for the day, and then I’ll meet you at the car.” He knew that they would both miss a lot of pitches because they would be too busy laughing and joking on each other’s crappy performance. Matt left the booth with a smile on his face and a plan to call his girlfriend later on when he would usually get out of the studio with Carrie.
Carrie looked around the room to make sure that she hadn’t brought anything in from her car, and then she headed out of the booth also. She waved to a few of the techs as she thought about how Matt wouldn’t mind if they stopped by her house to check on Ace, especially if they were going to go out to drink after they left the cages. She just wished she could leave her phone at the house so that she wouldn’t see the missed calls from Mark. Carrie exited the studio and tried not to think about why she would end up keeping the phone with her.
****
Kelly halfheartedly groaned when her player died in the game she was playing with Jason. She covertly looked at her phone beside her and grinned when she saw that she had timed it perfectly. “I’m gonna go see how Ash is doing with dinner, and then call Carrie.” She dropped her controller and pocketed her phone to make a quick getaway before Jason could complain. Kelly really wanted to go see Carrie, but since the other girl was at the studio, the nightly calls were cool. She liked being able to hear about Carrie’s day, even if it was just for part of the blonde’s break.
Jason didn’t object or tease Kelly that she was running out in the middle of their game. He turned his attention back to the game as Kelly walked off, though he couldn’t resist one comment. “Tell Carrie I say hi, but bring the phone to the table if you have to. Yesterday, Ashley made me wait to eat until you were off the phone.” He reset the game console while he thought about Carrie. He could only assume that she had gotten over their talk; he thought he was right since Carrie had come over and spent time with them recently. Jason knew the country singer was busy, and theoretically, could still be mad with him, but at least Carrie made time for Kelly.
Ashley had the TV on for background noise as she read a magazine. Kelly had taken to talking with Carrie during the early evening, so she had decided that she wouldn’t waste her time cooking. Ashley set her magazine aside when she heard Kelly’s voice, glad that she could go talk to Jason. She hadn’t forgotten the weird way that he had reacted when Carrie had backed out of lunch with them. She waited until Kelly passed the doorway, and then she got up from her chair and headed to the den. “Hey, Jase, what do you want for dinner? I’m thinking Chinese.”
Jason considered the question while he continued to play his game. He could have sworn that he had seen Ashley go into the kitchen, but he guessed it had been for a drink or something. “That would be cool.” He didn’t really care one way or the other, however he did look up from his game when Ashley sat down next to him. “I could pick up the order if you want.” Jason thought it was a nice offer, even though he was sure Ashley would like if he had offered to cook instead.
Ashley smiled at the unanticipated thoughtful offer. “If no one is going to cook, then we should definitely have it delivered.” She smiled and moved so that she could clearly see Jason’s face as he laughed. “You can keep playing your game, Kelly’s on the phone with Carrie, so you know you can beat this level and a few others before she’s off it.”
Jason kept his eyes on the screen in front of him as he tried to think of an appropriate response that wouldn’t sound like a dig to Ashley’s judgment of Carrie. “Yeah, Carrie and Kel are good together.” He thought they were awesome together since Carrie had managed to talk Kelly out of being angry with him over what he had said to the Carrie. “She’s cool. I’m going to miss hanging around with her when Kelly has to start her shows, not any more than Kelly will though.”
Ashley laughed at the truthful comment; she could only hope that Carrie could come with them to some of the shows. “I’m sure it wouldn’t suck as much if she wasn’t in the studio day and night right now.” She stretched out her legs and carefully watched Jason for any kind of response to her comment, but he didn’t visibly react. “You had quite the reaction when Kelly told us that Carrie couldn’t come to lunch last week. You gonna miss your buddy that talks sports with you?”
Jason missed an easy combo because of Ashley’s reminder of the canceled lunch. It only took him a moment to realize that Ashley knew something, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to find out what she knew. “Of course, she actually knows the teams I talk about.”
Ashley couldn’t suppress her eye roll. She smiled like Jason hadn’t just reminded her for the ten thousandth time that she knew nothing about sports. “It’s not like I get confused by the teams on purpose.” When Jason snickered, Ashley swatted his shoulder. “Anyway, back to what I was saying, you’re going to miss talking to her right, not just about sports?”
Jason paused his game as he tried to figure out what Ashley meant. Ashley had been around for most of his conversations with Carrie, so either Ashley thought he liked Carrie, or Kelly had said something to Ashley. Jason set his controller down and turned sideways to look at Ashley. “I don’t not talk to Carrie, but we don’t really talk about anything deep. Why?”
Ashley was tired of subtly leading the conversation; she was too hungry to remain patient when Jason had clearly figured out that she had an ulterior motive. “I just want to know why you went pale when Kelly talked about Carrie staying in the studio last week.” She hadn’t been able to figure out why Jason would have become upset at the mention, it was driving her crazy.
“What?” Jason stared at Ashley, even though she was unfazed by his expression. He sighed because he knew he couldn’t get out of the conversation without lying, and if Kelly had already told Ashley, then there wasn’t any harm. “I had a talk with Carrie a couple days before then, I’m sure Kelly told you all about it. It was nothing really. I told her I was happy she was with Kelly.”
Ashley blinked a few times; shocked at the answer she had been given. Kelly wouldn’t have had to tell her if her best friend had heard about the conversation, because she would have known the moment Kelly found it, namely when Kelly screamed that she would kill Jason. “I didn’t hear the whole thing actually.” Ashley wasn’t sure how to respond to Jason, but she did want to hear what else he had said to Carrie. She smiled as she considered how shocked Carrie would have been.
Jason didn’t usually go along with Ashley’s gossiping nature, but he could tell she had expected a different answer. “I just said that if she needed to talk, she could talk to me. I told her I supported her and Kelly, and that I take care of Kelly when we’re out touring and stuff. The only reason I was pale when Kelly told us that Carrie wasn’t coming, was that Kelly wouldn’t say anything to me and tried to get me out of the room so fast. She was pissed that I had talked to Carrie.”
Ashley would have laughed if it wasn’t one the sweetest and definitely the strangest thing Jason had ever told her. She almost laughed when she pictured how surprised Carrie would have been. “Jason, you know that they’re-"
Jason interrupted before Ashley could mention how Kelly and Carrie were under pressure because of their jobs; he didn’t want to think about that. “I know I shouldn’t have talked to Carrie, but I just wanted her to know that I support them and that she could talk to me about coming out I guess.” Jason wasn’t really sure that was the right term since Carrie wasn’t telling other people she was a lesbian, just friends and family he assumed. "I’m glad I did, because of this studio thing going on now. They’ll need time together, more than the phone calls they’re sharing now, and because of the talk, Carrie knows that I understand.”
Ashley couldn’t think of a single thing to say to Jason, and she was really stunned that Carrie had come over to dinner the week before. She looked at Jason for a minute, although he had already gone back to his game, and she decided that she wouldn’t correct his assumption that Kelly and Carrie were together. He could tell that Kelly felt something more than friendship for Carrie, so she didn’t think it would be a good idea to let Jason know that Carrie didn’t share the same feelings. “You don’t have to worry about Kelly. The producer will come back, or Carrie will finish her part. It’s no big deal.” Ashley jostled Jason with her shoulder and smiled at him.
Jason noticed that Ashley had playfully repeated his words; it was the closest thing he would get to Ashley saying that she agreed with something he did that upset Kelly. “Still doesn’t change the fact that they won’t get enough time together the next few weeks.”
Ashley chuckled at the statement because she was sure Kelly would wholeheartedly agree with Jason. “If it will make you feel better, we could say no the next time one of them brings up us all going out?” She wouldn’t even have to try to convince Kelly of the idea. Kelly hadn’t objected much when she had said she didn’t want to intrude on Kelly and Carrie’s movie nights.
“We could.” Jason nodded as he thought over the bare plan. “I’m sure Kelly would want the four of us to go out the next chance Carrie has a good amount of free time, just so Carrie wouldn’t miss out on time with her other friends.” He paused his game again and briefly hugged Ashley. If all of their ‘talks’ went like this one, he wouldn’t have to tease her so much.
“Cool.” Ashley watched Jason play his game while she thought about the conversation. The things Jason had said explained why Carrie had been so cold when she had last talked to the girl. Carrie had probably just gotten over Jason’s comments, and then she had probably sounded like she was trying to get Carrie to confess to liking Kelly. Ashley shook her head at the strange situation and playfully hit Jason’s shoulder. “Do you know what you want to order, or do I have to go find a menu too?”
****
Kelly had to bite her lip so that she didn’t laugh when she noticed Ace on the floor in front of the TV. The dog was chewing on the toy Carrie had bought last weekend; he had been in the same spot since she had first arrived. Ace hadn’t even left the toy when she had tried to call him over to give him some food. “I thought I was going to have to fight him for a space on the couch.” Kelly smiled and sat down next to Carrie as she handed over the beer she had grabbed for the blonde.
Carrie sipped her beer and looked over in Ace’s direction to see that her dog was content on the floor with his toy. “I think he’s just showing off his new toy. Last night he left it alone and cuddled with me on the couch.” Carrie chuckled in spite of her apprehension. She would love to just joke around about Ace, but she couldn’t really think about him when her mind found the topic of Kelly bringing her a beer more interesting. It wasn’t the first time Kelly had brought her a beer, and it didn’t necessarily mean anything other than Kelly cared about the things she liked.
Kelly laughed at Carrie’s observation, although she quickly stopped and glared in Ace’s direction. “Hey, I don’t want your toy.” She tried to keep up her pretend glare, but she failed when Ace ignored her completely. “Okay,” Kelly giggled for a second as she tried to get the conversation back on track. “Where are the movies we’re gonna watch? I want to pick one before you decide to turn on sports, because both of you aren’t gonna ignore me.”
Carrie was glad that she had an excuse not to look over at Kelly, since she was sure that the other singer had smiled at her. She did not want to add to her already tumultuous thoughts. “I knew I forgot something when I left the studio.” Carrie took another drink of her beer, and then she set it on the coffee table. “I can go out real quick and pick a couple up.” All week she had been troubled with her thoughts about how she felt about Kelly, except for when she was recording. The only thing she was sure of was that she wasn’t a lesbian.
“No, it’s all right.” Kelly put her hand on Carrie’s arm so that the other girl wouldn’t get up to leave. She didn’t want Carrie to have to go out for some stupid videos. “You’ve got plenty here that we can watch, just don’t pick any that are gonna scare the crap out of me.” Kelly pulled her hand back when Carrie nodded. She didn’t think it was fair that Carrie should have to go out after only getting home a little while before, and she didn’t want to lose the somewhat relaxed atmosphere that had developed once Carrie had started to unwind from the stressful day. Kelly didn’t want to watch a scary movie, but she could put up with one because it meant more time together with her friend.
Carrie stood and vainly tried to stop herself from analyzing all of Kelly’s actions and words. She didn’t want to be caught up in her head when she was supposed to enjoy her time with Kelly. Carrie walked over to the cabinet and looked through her movies for one that wouldn’t scare Kelly. If she was lucky she could find one that she had already seen, and that way if she did think throughout the movie, she would at least know the plot in case Kelly wanted to talk afterward.
Kelly opened her mouth to ask if Carrie wanted snacks, but she promptly closed her mouth when she realized it would have been a dumb question. They had eaten a snack when she had first arrived because Carrie had worked through the dinner break with a few techs so that they could actually spend some time together before it got to be too late. “Are you going to work tomorrow?” Kelly only asked because last week Carrie had been off on Saturday, though she wasn’t sure that her friend would have the next day off since Mark had been so angry earlier in the week.
Carrie pulled out a DVD that she thought Kelly might like and added it to the other one she had found. “It’s gonna be a normal day. I’ll be out by seven. We could have taken it off if Mark hadn’t been an ass on Monday.” Carrie knew that she and Matt had contributed to the setback, but she hadn’t told Kelly about the batting cages during any of their calls.
Kelly crossed her arms over her chest and leaned back against the couch even more, she wasn’t entirely thrilled with what she had heard about Mark’s tantrum. “Doesn’t he know that you need to rest your voice.” Kelly pouted when Carrie just turned and gave her a look. “What? I’m not making you talk now, and he’s the one that has been all over you guys to get the tracks done and then having you re-record stuff so that it fits into whatever song he hears in his head.”
Carrie laughed at Kelly’s description, though she turned back towards the movies since she didn’t know how to handle Kelly’s concern. “I did get some time off earlier in the week.” She had too many different thoughts, so she picked up the movies she had chosen and read the summaries. “Aliens blowing up stuff, or a serial killer?” Carrie rolled her eyes when Kelly said neither. “Fine, I’ll choose. I don’t want to hear any complaining though.”
Kelly smiled as Carrie set up the DVD for them; she wanted Carrie to pick because they usually watched movies that she liked. “Taking a break to check on Ace doesn’t count, you know? Neither does talking to me on the phone.” Kelly had added the last part in case Carrie decided to be a smartass.
"I know the difference.” Carrie snickered for a moment, and then she grabbed the remote for the DVD player before she joined Kelly on the couch again. “I took a break with Matt after Mark decided he wanted to yell at me. We went to the batting cages and then out for some drinks.” She skipped through the first few screens until she got to the scene menu. Carrie glanced at Kelly and wondered if Kelly would have rather spent the time with her too.
Kelly wasn’t sure how to feel; she was happy that Carrie had taken time off, but she also felt disappointed that Carrie hadn’t spent it with her. She knew it was absurd to be upset, although she was a little. She would have liked to go along, even if she probably would have managed to take out the pitching machine with a bat, though it was just as likely she would have heckled Carrie and Matt and been competitive. “I’m glad that you got a chance to de-stress.”
Carrie pressed the play button so the movie would start, and so she didn’t have to talk any more about the time with Matt. Probably the only other thing she was sure of was that she missed how normal it had felt to hang out with Kelly before last weekend. She wanted the closeness and easy nature of their friendship back; unfortunately, she wasn’t sure that they could get it back until she knew for sure how she felt about Kelly. “I just wanted to spend some normal time with Matt.”
Kelly sighed at the quiet explanation. She hadn’t meant to upset Carrie, that was the opposite of what she wanted for the blonde. “I know, sometimes I want the same thing with Ashley and Jason even though we see each other everyday.” She wanted to say more, like that was why she had her place in Texas, but she wasn’t sure that it would help the situation any. “Do you think he’s going to stay down there during the movie? I bet you he gets up as soon as we stop talking.”
Carrie was relieved that Kelly had dropped the subject. She shrugged her shoulders and then leaned against the arm of the couch as the opening credits played. “Just tell him no if you don’t want him up here.” She grabbed her beer and checked on Ace while the first scene of the movie began. “I don’t think you have to worry about Ace jumping up, he’s still playing with his new toy.” If she were the bitch that everyone thought she was, she would just turn the movie off and talk with Kelly about her confusion. Instead, Carrie sipped her drink and tried not to think.
Kelly distractedly watched the movie as she also tried to watch Carrie to see if her friend was still upset. After a few minutes, she was able to relax because Carrie looked wrapped up in the movie. She was pretty sure Carrie had picked the serial killer movie since she hadn’t seen any aliens yet, though she wasn’t sure that a movie about people running around trying not to be killed was any better. Kelly smiled when Carrie snickered at some guy on the screen, who promptly did something stupid and got himself killed. Reassured that Carrie hadn’t taken her disappointment to heart, she let herself chuckle and call the dead character a doofus.
Carrie just smiled and sipped her beer so that she didn’t tease Kelly for all the times the other girl had joked on her for her predilection for scary movies. Everything would be so much easier if she just knew if she found Kelly attractive. Just because she had compared Kelly to her exes didn’t mean she thought Kelly was sexy. When she first began to date ten years ago, she had only dated guys. She had spent time with plenty of girls who were lesbians or bi in college, so she was sure that if she were bisexual she would have had feelings for a girl by now, but that didn’t explain whatever she felt for Kelly. Carrie scowled at the TV and tried to ignore her ever present thoughts.
Kelly grimaced because of a particularly graphic scene and thought that Carrie had better be enjoying the movie still. She almost wished Ace would want to sit with her. A brief look in Carrie’s direction reminded her as to why she hadn’t gone out herself and rented videos. Kelly hadn’t said anything at the time, but she was glad that Ashley and Jason weren’t around. She knew Carrie would rather be at home, and not out somewhere with her brother and her best friend making small talk. Kelly hadn’t counted on scary movies being a part of the evening, but she wouldn’t complain since Carrie looked happy, which made her happy.
Carrie gave up on the movie and let herself think; it wasn’t like she could overlook the fact that Kelly was right next to her. She wanted to call her sisters so they could help her out with her feelings, but she knew Shanna and Stephanie would focus on whether or not she was a lesbian or bisexual. Even if her sisters didn’t ask her about her sexuality right away, the question would come up, and she wouldn’t have an answer. Her lack of answers would probably make her sisters disregard anything she said about Kelly, and then she would have even more problems. Carrie sighed and tried to redirect her thoughts back to Kelly. She could deal with sisters and labels later.
Kelly glanced over at the other end of the couch and wondered if Carrie would take it the wrong way if she laid down, like the move to get more comfortable meant that she wasn’t interested in the movie. She thought it would give Carrie the wrong impression, but she didn’t know if she really wanted to lean against Carrie. It would be easy to let herself forget that Carrie was straight and that they were just like any other couple relaxing at home, which wouldn’t be a good thing for her. Her feelings were all over the place anyway when it came to Carrie. Kelly hesitated, but eventually she leaned closer to Carrie and let her head rest on the other girl’s shoulder. She had fallen asleep on her friend during other movie nights, so it reassured her that Carrie wouldn’t be upset at her attempt to get comfortable.
Carrie stared straight ahead at the screen when Kelly leaned against her, although she did want to look and see if Kelly had fallen asleep. She didn’t think she had missed that much of the movie. She watched the TV for a minute and realized that it was almost halfway over. Carrie continued to pay attention, though she was slightly unnerved by Kelly’s move. She wanted to look at Kelly; she really hadn’t paid attention any of the other times Kelly had fallen asleep on her because she had been half asleep herself. She wondered what they looked like, and if Kelly was as confused as she was. When Kelly laughed at one of the character’s comments, Carrie realized that she had again lost track of the movie; this time because she had been thinking that the way they were sitting together felt normal. Carrie put her beer on the side table and cautiously shifted so that she wouldn’t disturb Kelly when she put her arm around the other girl.
Kelly hadn’t anticipated that Carrie would put an arm around her; it had startled her at first. She swallowed back her question about the move, for all she knew Carrie did it all the time when she was asleep. She was surprised, but if Carrie was comfortable, then she was too. Kelly soon figured out that the hold made it difficult for her to concentrate on the movie much to her chagrin. Her head was resting comfortably on the crook of the blonde’s arm, but Carrie’s hand was on her stomach. She could feel the warmth of Carrie’s hand through her shirt, which made her thoughts go in two entirely different directions. Luckily, Kelly kept her thoughts on the safer choice when Carrie held her a bit more firmly. She smiled and leaned further onto Carrie while she thought about how good it felt to have the other girl’s arm wrapped protectively around her; it kind of reminded her of how she felt when Carrie had gone off on Hayden.
Carrie had silently freaked out because she thought Kelly had only moved to pull away, but her heartbeat calmed the longer Kelly remained. She let herself look at Kelly since she was positive the other girl couldn’t see the action. Her first thought was that it didn’t look strange at all, it just looked like Kelly was about to fall asleep, and Carrie wasn’t bothered by that because she liked that they were comfortable with each other. She liked how close they were and that she could be open with Kelly, although the feelings didn’t help really since she had always thought that their closeness felt right. Carrie frowned because holding Kelly in her arms and thinking that it felt ‘right’ was more than friends felt for each other. “Kelly.” Carrie tried to keep her expression blank as she repeatedly told herself that she was right and everything would be okay. She didn’t believe her thoughts though until Kelly looked at her smiled. She kept her eyes on Kelly’s as she leaned down and tentatively pressed her lips against Kelly’s, despite her confidence.
Kelly didn’t know what she had thought Carrie would do when the blonde said her name, but a kiss wouldn’t have been among her thoughts. She was so shocked that she didn’t kiss Carrie back. Fleetingly, she was saddened when Carrie pulled back and looked at her, though she managed to ignore her feelings and focus on what had happened. “Why?” Kelly didn’t want to be some experiment to Carrie, if that was even what the kiss had been about; she wasn’t sure because Carrie’s arm was still around her. However, she also didn’t want to be someone Carrie kissed because she was around and Carrie was between boyfriends. Kelly didn’t want to think that Carrie was messing with her, but she couldn’t help but think of their date.
Carrie didn’t have an uncomplicated answer for Kelly, and she was still caught up in the lingering impression of Kelly’s lips against her own. She had been terrified that if she kissed Kelly and didn’t like it, that she had thrown their friendship away for nothing, but the kiss had felt right. “I wanted to be closer to you.” Carrie managed a small smile as she brought her hand up to the back of Kelly’s neck and leaned in again. “I want to be closer to you.” She shut her eyes, unlike the first time, and softly brushed her lips against Kelly’s in small kisses until Kelly responded in kind.
