My brother is going on and on about something and I’d be telling a lie if I said I actually knew what he was talking about. I’m quick to make sure that I throw a couple of “yeahs” and a few good nods of my head to give the impression that I really am following him in a conversation though, when in fact I’m doing the complete opposite of listening. Not only am I ignoring him, no, that’s not even the big issue; the real issue is why I’m not paying attention to him. I’m currently a bit preoccupied texting a certain blonde whom I shouldn’t be texting, especially not with my brother sitting next to me. Hell, probably not with him present at all. But I am, and I don’t know what’s worse, that I am texting his fiancé while he is present, or that I don’t particularly care that I am to begin with. It’s probably the latter of the two options.
I’m smiling aimlessly as my fingers go to town on the key pad of my phone, and apparently I’m completely unaware of that fact until my brother is waving his hand in front of my face.
“Kel,”
I blink and look up from my phone. “Yeah, what’s up?”
Jason grins and I continue to stare blankly ahead at him. “Who’s got you so smitten over there?”
Shit. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I try to play it off coolly, he has no idea and he will never have any idea.
“Oh please, you’ve been checked out of your own head since I popped up this morning. There’s totally someone in the picture.” He scoots closer to me and nudges me with his shoulder. “Come on sis, spill.”
I frown inwardly and shrug my shoulders. “There’s nothing to spill. I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.” I lie again, calmly deleting my texts as I speak in case he gets some crazy idea to be nosy and snatches my phone from me. That’d be bad.
My phone beeps in my hand and I take a quick glance down at it to read her current message.
Do you still want me to come over after he leaves?
I take a breath and quickly respond as the wheels in my head are spinning out of control. I’m not sure he ever will leave. Ha ha
“You’re such a terrible liar, sis.” Fuck just let it go Jason.
I quickly read her next message when my phone beeps again and just as quickly delete it, along with the last two messages. I silence my phone and shove it in my pocket. He has that stupid grin on his face still and I just want to slap it off of him. Damn, when the hell did I become so hostile towards my brother?
“I should have noticed,” He says happily, “you’ve been different this past month. I can’t quite put my finger on it…”
I can.
“But it’s a good different. Actually it may be that, at least from my personal observations,”
You're not all that observant, bro.
“You haven’t been doing the whole random hook up age, so that means there has to be a steady girl in the picture.”
“Something like that.” I say.
He slaps my back excitedly. “That’s great, sis!” Really, I have a feeling you’d think differently if you knew said woman was currently wearing a ring you put on her finger.
“When can we meet her? Mom is going to be so ecstatic! Are you going to bring her to the wedding?!”
I have a feeling she’ll be there, if there is a wedding at that point. “Whoa,” I say quickly, putting my hands up, “You need to calm down there buddy. If,” I say slowly, “if there is a girl, who’s to say I’m even still with this person when the wedding rolls around? And speaking of, when the hell are you even planning on getting hitched?”
Jason rolls his eyes. “That’s typical Clarkson behavior, always expecting the worst.”
“Is there any other way?” I grin.
Jason shakes his head. “You’re a mess little sis.” You really, really have no clue big brother.
“But speaking of the wedding,” He pauses, “You seriously haven’t been listening to a word I’ve been saying, huh?”
I smile and shrug. “Not really, sorry, I was distracted.”
“Yeah, I bet you were.” He laughs, and again he truly has no damn clue. And where that guilt should be eating away at me right now, it’s not, and I’m not quite sure if I’m one hundred percent bothered by that, and the cold dose of reality on that scares me even more. That I’m so caught up in my affair with Carrie that I’m slowly becoming a person I don’t even recognize anymore.
“That’s alright; I have no problem repeating anything.” I bet you don’t.
He slides back into his original position on the couch and I’m glad to have that open space back between us. “Carrie’s parents are coming out in about a week or so.”
Now that has caught my attention. I sit up straight on the couch. “Yeah?” I wonder smoothly, “I was under the impression that they weren’t on the best of terms with her.”
Jason’s eyebrows furrow together. Shit, I may have said too much. “It’s something along those lines. How do you know that?”
Lie. Fast. “Oh, you know, we sister in-laws do speak on occasion.” I joke.
He chuckles. “You better not be embarrassing me.” He warns playfully.
“Wouldn’t dream of it, bro.” I laugh. Carrie has only briefly opened up to me about her parents in the last month. It was a very tight lipped conversation and all I was able to take from it was that something had happened between the three of them that caused Carrie to take the teaching job here so she could get out of her hometown and start fresh. Away from her parents scrutiny.
“So anyways, we’ve been busy discussing what that means and what’s going to happen when they get here.”
I blink. “Have they met you before? Do they even know about you?” I wonder.
“I haven’t met them, because as you know they aren’t exactly ‘tight’ with Care at the moment. But they do know about me, and they’re excited to get to know me and everything. They seem like they want to be a part of the wedding and all that. Carrie is a bit hesitant though.”
I frown a little, and hope he doesn’t catch it. “I could speak with her if you want.” I suggest.
“Would you?”
I nod. “Sure, what are best men that are women here for?” He laughs and once again closes the space between us to pull me into a hug. This time though the invasion of my personal space is brief and he pushes up from the couch as soon as the embrace is over.
“Well, I should get out of here. I have to get to work and then I’m going by Care’s later tonight. We’ve been discussing moving in together.” Huh, that’s news to me.
I’m up and following him to the door. “Really? That’s cool, bro.” I lie, “It’d be about damn time.” I laugh uneasily.
He shares my laugh, but not for the same reasons. “Right? Well, alright sis, you have a goodnight. Try and stay out of trouble. And good luck with the little lady. Maybe she’ll be a keeper.” He leans over and kisses my cheek quickly and steps out into the hallway of my apartment building.
“Maybe.” I say, trying to hold a smile. “Have a goodnight, Jase.” I return his wave before shutting and locking the door behind him, resting my back against it as I stand in place for a moment.
There’s a thought I hadn’t thought much about. When all is said and done, at the end of the day Carrie is Jason’s. I only have a portion of her time here and there. He knows little bits about her that I don’t and vice versa. She’s also shared more with me psychically than she has with him but at the end of the day where does that leave me? Alone.
When all is said and done, how do you keep someone who was never yours to begin with? When everything falls out into the open, and I truly believe that eventually it will, how can any of the possible outcomes be positive for me?

“Hey stranger.” She says sweetly, entering my apartment as I pull the door back, allowing her inside.
I manage to smile as I close the door behind her, locking it as well. “Hey.”
She must sense my doubts or frustrations because she knows something is off. “What’s wrong, honey?” She asks with concern, slowly moving closer to me.
“Not something I particularly want to voice out loud right now.” I admit.
She nods. “Okay.” That’s one thing I really enjoy about having Carrie around, she knows when not to push certain things, as do I.
“Well,” She begins seductively, “I have a few ideas that can keep things off your mind for a while.” I glance over at her and finally notice that she’s wearing a crème colored trench coat, which at the moment she is teasingly untying before me.
I watch in amazement as the coat becomes a puddle of worthless material at her feet. And before stands by far the most beautiful woman I have seen in my life completely stripped down to nothing but a pair of sexy black pumps.
“Helping?” She raises an eyebrow.
I swallow hard and close the space between us. “Most definitely,” I manage out before our lips collide together.
