She could only imagine that if this was remotely awkward for her how Kelly must be feeling at that moment. It was one thing to be experiencing this situation on the other end; having a wife that didn’t remember having a life with you, let alone being married to you or remembering the sweet little girl whose hand Carrie was currently clutching protectively. But how must Kelly be feeling being thrust back into this life practically as a stranger, not really knowing the woman she is married to or remembering the child she birthed?
Lyra stood unblinking at Carrie’s side glancing up hopefully at the woman standing in their living room. It was as if she was cautious, taking her time to study her other mother. Finally she blinked and a smile cracked upon her little lips as she released Carrie’s hand and launched herself towards Kelly. Suddenly all Kelly felt were tiny arms wrapped around her legs and wave of emotions she wasn’t sure of at the moment. She felt herself smile at the contact as she carefully lowered herself to her daughter’s level and hugged the child.
“Hey, sweet girl,” She whispered, holding the child delicately in her arm; fighting back a tiny urge to cry.
Lyra slid her hands up onto Kelly’s shoulders and leaned back to look at her. “I missed you, momma.”
Kelly blinked back a few tears and held her smile. “Oh, I missed you too, sweetheart.” She replied; her statement not in the least bit fabricated. She did miss her daughter, missed that she couldn’t fully grasp a memory of her, but knew and could feel her connection to the child. What mother wouldn’t at least feel that?
The little girl slid her arms down from her mother’s shoulders and gently touched the cast on her arm. “Does it hurt?” She wondered curiously.
Kelly lowered her eyes to her cast along with her daughter. “Only a little, sweetie, but I’m okay.”
Lyra smiled brightly. “Good! Come on momma, me and mommy set up your room for you!” She exclaimed, taking Kelly’s good arm and pulling her towards the staircase.
Kelly laughed a little and managed a sweet, “Hi,” to Carrie as their daughter led her up the stairs. Carrie had managed a “hello” in return as she followed her two special ladies to the second story of their house.
“Mommy cleaned and cleaned and made the bed up for you.” Lyra rambled on. “The bathroom is a mess, but that’s my fault. So don’t get mad at mommy for it.” She whispered the last part.
Kelly chuckled and nodded her head. “You got it little miss.”
Carrie smiled from the doorway of their bedroom and happily watched the interaction. That was one thing she always loved about the Texan; she had always been able to handle any situation she was put in with such grace and act as if nothing was wrong even it had been or if she wasn’t completely comfortable with it. But she could tell that Lyra was touching her wife’s heart all over again.
Carrie cleared her throat as she finally stepped into the room. “Um, all your things are in that dresser over there,” She began, pointing to a large dresser on the opposite end of the room. “The bathroom is through there,” she continued, “and if you need anything I’ll be downstairs and your mom will be one room over.”
“And I’ll be next to grandma’s room.” Lyra interjected.
Kelly giggled at the little girl, completely amazed by how much she was like her. “Got it.” She said, brushing her daughter’s hair out of her face.
“May I ask why you’re sleeping downstairs?” She wondered.
Carrie nodded and cleared her throat again. “I just thought…I thought that with everything going on it’d be better for you. I didn’t want to make anything awkward or uncomfortable, ya know?”
Kelly nodded knowingly. “Understandable. Well, if you don’t mind a little awkwardness I’d love it if you stayed…” She trailed off, leaving her invitation open, “by the way, I’m kidding about the awkwardness. We’re married…yeah, I may not exactly remember that for the most part at the moment, but I’m your wife and…and all I’m saying is that if you wanted to sleep in here I wouldn’t be completely opposed to it.”
The other girl couldn’t help but laugh at her wife’s rambling. “Alright, but only if you’re absolutely certain, I’m serious. I don’t mind sleeping on the couch if that means that you’re more comfortable up here alone.”
“I never do well alone in strange places. “
Carrie smiled. “I know.”
“Even though this really shouldn’t be all that strange, I mean, this is my home too after all. But no, I don’t mind.”
Lyra glanced back and forth between her mother’s and finally got a word in. “Are you guys gonna kiss?”
Both women shared a loud laugh as Carrie stepped further inside of the room and scooped her up into her arms. “Oh, what am I gonna do with you kid?” She kissed her daughters cheek before slowly lowering her back to her feet.
“May I go downstairs with gammy and Auntie Ashley and Auntie Lyssa?”
“Absolutely, baby. Tell grandma I’ll start dinner in a little bit.”
Lyra nodded her head and began skipping out of the room. She stopped in the doorway for a second before turning and looking at Kelly. “I’m glad you’re home, momma.”
Kelly offered a smile. “Me too, sweetheart.” She replied, watching their daughter continue her way out of the room.
“So you cook, huh? I’m beginning to see why I married you.” Kelly joked.
Carrie laughed and met her wife across the room, still keeping a small distance between the two of them. “Oh, that was one of many reasons.” The women laughed together again before a short silence fell between the two of them.
“I don’t know how I’m supposed to act around you right now? Does that make sense? Like…we’re married, but you…I don’t want to cross any lines or invade your space right now when all I want to do right now is kiss you because I’m so damn happy that you’re okay.” Carrie admitted.
Kelly nodded in understanding as she closed the space between them. Taking Carrie’s hand into her own she linked their fingers and stared up into her wife’s eyes.
“I will remember, Care. I will. And then everything will be how they were for us before the accident. However they were for us.” She laughed.
Carrie bit her bottom lip. “Right,” She laughed lightly, silently hoping that things would be far better than they were before the accident. Maybe things could go back to normal after all of this. Whatever normal was for them.
