Kelly toyed with the phone for what seemed like a century before she finally pressed the talk button. She listened to the dial tone for a couple seconds before she turned her hand over, palm up, and entered the seven digits that were written there. She was thankful that Ashley wasn’t around to harass her anymore about calling the girl, or harass her while she was on the phone with her; if she ever answered. She listened on the line as the phone continued to ring and was just about to hang up before she finally heard a voice on the other end.
“Underwood residence,”
She swallowed hard. Although she had never spoken to the girl’s mother she could tell that was who she was speaking to.
“Uh…” Don’t stutter you moron. “Hi…hello,” She cleared her throat, “is Carrie in?”
Mrs. Underwood’s voice went up a couple octaves. “She is! May I ask who is calling?”
“It’s Kelly; I’m Kelly, a classmate of hers.”
“Oh excellent, hang on just a moment, dear.”
She heard the line go silent for a while before a new voice came through on the line again.
“Last minute caller, eh?”
She smiled. “What can I say; I like to make people wait.”
Carrie chuckled. “Well, I’m gonna take a wild guess here and say that you’re calling because you’ve decided you’re going to come tomorrow.”
“Hopeful much?” Kelly teased.
“Maybe a little,” Carrie laughed, “but that’s only mostly because there won’t be many people my age here.” She teased back, listening to the Texans deep laugh through the phone.
“So, was I right? Or are you calling to decline after all? I suppose that’d be super Southern of you and all that, since it’d be the polite thing to do.” Carrie said.
Kelly snickered. “You’re doing it again.” She said pointedly.
“Doing what?”
“Rambling.” The brunette giggled.
“Oh please, pot meet kettle.”
Kelly smiled. “Touché.” Maybe giving the blonde a shot wouldn’t hurt her after all.
“So the party…” Carrie said casually.
“Ash and I will be there.”
“Great, I’ll see you tomorrow then, around two. Feel free to bring your bathing suit.”
Kelly nodded even though the other girl couldn’t see her. “Will do, that sounds good. See you tomorrow then, Bear.” She said teasingly.
“Oh, so you did catch that nickname.”
“Oh it was hard not to, honey.” They laughed.
“It’s Care Bear, by the way.” The Oklahoman pointed out.
“I like Bear more. See you tomorrow, bah!” She caught Carrie’s goodbye in response and then ended the call.
________________________________________________"This place is still as intimidating as before, even if we were invited." Kelly joked as she and Ashley approached the Underwood home.
Ashley laughed and continued to walk alongside her friend. "I don't think it's intimidating at all, especially not as intimidating as the Lancaster house. I always felt like I had to bow every time I entered that place."
Kelly allowed herself to laugh despite the mention of the Lancaster's. "Oh god," she felt her eyes begin to water a little as she laughed harder, "Do you remember when you actually did bow?"
"Hey, don't judge me. They had a freaking butler, okay? Who in Burleson, besides them, do you know with a butler?"
They reached the front door as Kelly was trying to get her laughter under control. "Very true." She replied as the large mahogany doors opened in front of them before they even had time to knock.
The two Texans wiped hopelessly at their eyes as the blonde stood behind the door eyeing them curiously. “Gosh, I know the house looks terrible but there certainly isn’t any reason to cry about it.” She joked.
Kelly and Ashley continued to wipe their eyes and shook their heads. “Oh please, this place is far from terrible. We were just reminiscing about something.” Kelly explained as they stepped forward to enter the house as Carrie pulled the door back for them.
“Pinch me.” Ashley murmured in awe, taking in the surroundings of the living room.
The house looked even more stunning than the first time Kelly had seen it, now that the boxes were completely cleared out of the house.
“Ouch!” Ashley yelped, glaring at her friend.
Kelly smirked. “I’m just helping you out.”
Carrie stared between the two friends and smiled. “Thank you, I’m sure my mother would love to hear how much you love this place.”
Kelly finally focused her full attention on Carrie and wondered how she had been able to look at anything else when the blonde led them into the house. The Oklahoman was dressed in short jean cut offs paired with a bikini top that may as well have not been covered up with the thin white material the girl was passing off as a shirt.
The shorter Texan barely felt her friend nudge her before she blinked and adjusted her eyes in her direction. “What’s up?” She barely managed out.
“Barbie here was just offering to show us around the rest of the house.”
She looked over at Carrie again, this time up into her eyes. “We’d like that.”
Carrie nodded and took the lead in front of them, the two girls following suit behind her. “Drool much, Kel?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Kelly responded, trying not to smile.
Ashley snorted beside her as they climbed the stairs behind the blonde. She guided them passed her parent’s bedroom and a few guest rooms before ending up at the far end of the long hallway in front of what both girls assumed to be Carrie’s room.
“And this is my room.” Carrie announced, pushing her way into the room and allowing the girls to spill in behind her.
It looked simpler than the extravagance Kelly had imagined it would be, but this made the Oklahoman more real to her. While the rest of the Underwood home had been extremely decked out with all the fine things the world had to offer, their daughters room had maintained that innocence of what a teenagers room should look like. Not what Kelly had expected at all.
She eyed the room for a bit and was drawn to a cork board on the other side of the room near the girl’s balcony. She stood in front of it, viewing the pictures tacked up against the board and getting a small glimpse into the blonde’s life before Texas. There were pictures of her in choir group at Church, at school as well. There were various pictures of her at school dances, playing Volleyball, Cheering, every day pictures of her with friends just laughing and having a good time; all things that seemed like a distant memory to Kelly herself.
“You must miss it.” Kelly said quietly.
Carrie stepped up beside her. “I do. I miss my best friend mostly.” She replied honestly.
Kelly didn’t have to ask her which girl that was; she could tell from how many photos the two of them were in together which one she’d be. Their happiness in each photo also gave away how much love they’d had for one another, how close they had been. It was the same way she and Ashley had been, how they were now. The only thing off in the photos was the way the other girl had been looking at Carrie, Kelly had known that look before. That was the same way she used to look at Schulyer when she was in love with her.
