It was evening and things were winding down steadily. Die was settled on one end of the couch with Kyo nestled snugly against his side. On the television, cartoons were playing—a weakness for both of them. The boy smelled freshly bathed and seemed content as he leaned over against Die’s chest.
A light thud on the other end of the couch signaled Mayu’s presence as she hopped onto the cushions. It wasn’t a graceful motion, however, due to the feline’s large size. She sort of swaggered when she walked and it was a wonder she was getting anywhere with that pregnant stomach of hers. She flopped to her side, purring loudly enough for both Die and Kyo to hear the sound clearly as they sat there.
Kyo looked over to Mayu and smiled at her. She lifted her head, tilting it back to look at the couple cuddling on the couch. Reaching down, Kyo scratched her head and reached down a little further to pet her stomach. It looked rather big, like she could give birth any minute. Hearing her purr louder, he felt her get up and stretch before waddling over to them and climbing into his lap, making herself comfortable against Kyo’s legs. Kyo giggled and pet her as he leaned against Die, smiling happily.
Reaching down, Die placed his hand atop the cat’s head, rubbing the furry area idly. Mayu pushed against the touch, still rumbling loudly from her perch on Kyo’s lap. Letting his hand slip over, Die rubbed the swollen expanse of the cat’s stomach, feeling the tautness beneath his palm. Removing his hand, he placed his arm around Kyo’s shoulders once more, giving the boy a slight squeeze.
“I think she’s going to give birth soon…” Kyo said as his hand found their cat’s stomach, petting it softly as she stretched out. He wondered when it would happen. His thoughts were interrupted by Mayu as she got up carefully and found the easiest, less jump filled way to get off the couch and made her way to her bed they had bought her. “… Die…”
The taller male looked at Kyo curiously, hearing the concern in the boy’s voice. His shifted his gaze to the cat, watching as she made her unwieldy way into her bed. It was less of a bed, though, than it was a plastic tub, lined with blankets and towels to make it comfortable. They had hesitated to buy a bed that she could mess up when she gave birth, opting to wait until a little later to do so.
Over the past week, Mayu had turned it into a nest, arranging the fabric inside to her liking. Now, she lay down in the midst of it, lying heavily on her side. The purring noise seemed to intensify, and if Die recalled correctly, she had been purring like that for quite some time with little pause. Her head was flopped to the side and her small, sharp teeth showed as she began panting. She was in labor and both Die and Kyo knew it.
Standing up from the couch quickly, Kyo rushed over to her before looking back to Die. “Die, get some extra towels.” Reaching out, he started to pet her head softly, wanting to help her as much as possible. He heard her give a meow before looking down at her tail and back end. “God, Die, she’s going into labor, hurry with the towels.”
“She’s going to be fine,” Die assured, returning to Kyo’s side with the towels. He knelt down by the tub Mayu laid inside, observing what was happening. Obviously, she had been languishing around in the middle of labor for quite some time. Die found it strange that she had made herself scarce during that time; he would have expected her to be all over him and Kyo.
“I hope so…” Kyo sighed softly as he resumed petting her head, trying his best to help in any way he could until she started to actually give birth. Looking to Die worriedly, he leaned against him and took a towel, draping it over his lap. It would get messy, he knew that much.
Die was fairly certain that Mayu would understand what to do. The advantage that animals had on them in this aspect was that they were mostly self-sufficient. However, the redhead did understand that things could go wrong. In the event that something started going wrong, he hoped they would be able to help. The feline began making distressed, uncomfortable sounds, as though she was angry, and Die knew that something was about to happen.
The sounds made Kyo frown, knowing that she was distressed and probably in pain. He winced, not knowing what to do to help ease the pain. Childbirth was always a wonder to Kyo, but he had never witnessed it firsthand. This was close enough, he assumed. It was almost the same, but cats had more kittens than people had babies.
Reaching over, Die placed his hand on Kyo’s knee. He could tell that the boy was getting a little bothered by the pain that Mayu was going through. Truthfully, it was easier for Die to reassure himself that this cat’s labor was something that happened in nature and that it would be fine. However, he had not really given thought to how he would feel when it was time for Kyo to give birth to their baby. It was obvious that he would feel much differently about the situation when it was Kyo. Die cared about the boy very much and he realized that when it came down to things, he would be upset to see the kid going through something so basic and human.
The thought jolted him slightly and he pushed it away, focusing on the cat, instead. Her rear looked suspiciously damp and Die assumed that she was very close. His judgment was proved correct in the next few minutes, when the first kitten began emerging. It was a slow descent, however, and Die prayed that the other kittens came faster. If they all came so slowly, the redhead had no idea how Mayu would stand it. He knew he wouldn’t be able to, but then again, he was on the male end of the spectrum.
Once the kitten was fully emerged, Kyo picked it up with the towel and moved it closer to Mayu so she could cut the cord. He rubbed the back of the kitten carefully until he heard its cries, smiling and setting it down so Mayu could finish cleaning her kitten. Looking back to where Die was looking previously, watching as another kitten slowly started to come out, though it wasn’t as slow as the one before it.
The next kitten emerged with more ease than its sibling. It was a damp, slimy-looking little creature, without a shadow of a doubt. With caution, Die reached to move the kitten closer to Mayu, observing with fascination as she began chewing the cord and bathing the kitten. It started crying, much like a human infant would, which touched Die on some level.
The other kittens seemed to come out with more ease. Kyo took the next, than Die, cleaning them after Mayu chewed off the cord. They let them nurse as she cleaned them, the last one having just been born. There were a total of five kittens, all laying huddled together and suckling from their mother. Kyo smiled down at them, leaning against Die as he sat the towel down at his side. “We should go wash our hands now…”
Die nodded in agreement, rising from his crouched position. They headed for the bathroom and Die nudged the water on with his arm, submerging his hands under the spray and washing them thoroughly. Kyo did the same, toweling his hands dry. Turning, Die returned to the cat, watching her for a long moment. She looked perfectly at ease with her kittens and the redhead speculated as to whether she had given birth before or not. Die was willing to get that she had, judging by the way she had gone about everything.
All of the kittens were about the same size, with the exception of one. This was the one they would have to watch carefully, in case Mayu tried to reject it. It was very tiny, but Die found it to be the cutest one. It looked like a patchwork quilt, much like its mother. The right side of its face was black, but the ear on that side looked like it would be orange. The opposite ear was black. In the center of its face was a weak, orange-white color, with a patch of black on the left side of it. It was almost ugly, but not quite there. It would be much easier to love it than it would be to think it unattractive.
“They’re so cute…” Kyo smiled at them, standing next to Die and watching as Mayu cleaned her kittens once more. It made Kyo think about what it would be like when it was his turn. Sighing softly, he shook his head before moving to take a seat on the floor next to Mayu’s makeshift bed and started petting her head. “I think now we can get her a real bed for her and her kittens.”
“Yeah,” Die agreed, looking down at Kyo as he petted Mayu. He would have to go out soon and buy a bed and a few other things for the cat and her new arrivals. “Are we going to keep all of them?” he asked, the question just then coming to mind.
“I don’t know… I mean, I want to, because I know I’d get attached. We can’t give them away until they’re about six weeks old and by then I wouldn’t want to give them away…” He sighed, just knowing that Die would make him give them away. It made him sad because he was already attached to them.
“Keep them,” Die said, smiling slightly. It wasn’t like they would be much of a problem. He would just have to make sure they got their shots and got fixed when the time came, but he was willing to keep them. Plus, that dejected undertone to Kyo’s words would have made it ten times harder to say no to him.
“Really?” He asked, not knowing if Die would end up giving them away anyway. Kyo was never allowed pets with his parents, and he always wanted cats. Kittens were just so cute and made it even better. He looked up at Die, seeing the smile. That smile told him that Die was being honest and wouldn’t do such a thing. It made him smile as well, his fingers scratching behind Mayu’s ear.
“Enjoy them.” Die laughed a little. He stepped close to Kyo and placed a hand on the boy’s red hair, toying with it. Mayu was being soothed by Kyo’s attentions and was purring from contentment now. Her kittens were still nursing eagerly, awkwardly kneading at her belly with tiny paws. It made him smile wider and gave him a warm feeling in his chest that he enjoyed. “You hungry?” he asked Kyo, gently tugging on a strand of red, wrapping it around his finger idly.
“Yeah. Can I have some rice and tomatoes?” He requested, having an odd craving for some all day. It was probably the pregnancy cravings kicking in. The combination wasn’t too odd, but it was still a little out there. “I don’t want cooked tomatoes though…” Sticking his tongue out slightly he moved to rise from his spot from the floor.
“Sure,” Die said, raising en eyebrow just slightly. Raw tomatoes and rice… Whatever Kyo wanted, though. They went into the kitchen. “Sit down,” he instructed, moving to prepare the rice and tomatoes. When it was ready, he placed it before Kyo with a glass of milk. The boy was going to need more calcium than ever.
Picking up his chopsticks, he started eating the odd combination. He made a contented noise, showing he liked it and continued eating until he was finished. Downing the milk quickly, he placed the empty glass on the table and smiled up at Die after wiping his upper lip. Living with Die was much better than being with his parents. Everything was calm and peaceful instead of the constant tension and the feeling that he did something wrong.
Die returned to the living room to check up on Mayu and her kittens. They were sleeping peacefully, looked well-suckled and small as the huddled near their mother. Kyo was steadily getting bigger as time progressed. He was roughly three months pregnant and finally, his stomach was starting to show enough to be visible with little effort taken to look for change. He still seemed a little too small, as though he wasn’t gaining enough weight. Maybe Die needed to feed him more. He would make sure to ask the doctor when they went back to visit.
Taking his plates and glass to the sink, Kyo cleaned them before moving back to the living room and huddled up on the couch. He watched Mayu before looking to the television and curling up in the corner of the couch. It was a calm night, aside from the cat giving birth to her kittens, and it was perfect, in Kyo’s opinion. School work done, no work that night, Die’s work all done, they had the rest of the evening to themselves.
Die suppressed a yawn, pushing a hand through his hair. He didn’t know about Kyo, but he was ready to sleep. When he retreated to the bedroom, the boy followed after a moment later. They settled under the blankets together and Die curved himself around Kyo’s back, holding the boy close to him.
