For the next few days Josh sequestered himself within his apartment throwing himself into composing and playing and taking his sons out and about in an effort to keep his mind off Louisa and their confrontation. But every time he picked up his Strad his thoughts drifted back to the trip to Paolo’s weeks earlier when he had let her play his prized possession. He pictured as clearly as if she were standing right in front of him her fingers dancing across the finger board and he swore he could smell the feminine tang of her preferred fragrance Paris in the air.

Giving up on Paganini’s 24th Caprice as a lost cause he put away his Strad and went upstairs to the sun room flopping onto one of the sun beds with a loud sigh.

Josh was jerked from his slumber an hour later by the shrill sound of ‘Amazing Grace’ Louisa’s ringtone. After a furious internal battle he pulled his blackberry from his pocket and answered.

‘Hello?’ he said shortly.

‘J it’s Lou’ Louisa’s croaky voice ‘we need to talk’

‘Oh you don’t say?’ Josh said sarcastically.

‘Please J I know I stuffed up’ Louisa said ‘I want to explain myself and do a healthy amount of apologizing’

Josh signed loudly.
‘Alright then’ he said exhaling in a rush ‘bring your things over for your trip away and I’ll give you a ride to the airport tomorrow alright?’

‘Okay see you soon’

An hour later a tentative knock came at Josh’s apartment door. He answered it to find Louisa looking the most miserable since he’s met her violin and viola cases over one shoulder and an overnight bag slung over the other.
‘Come in’ Josh said taking her violin and viola cases ‘go through to the living room I’ll put these in the vault’

Josh stowed Louisa’s instruments in the vault with his Strad then made his way downstairs to the living room where Louisa was standing by the piano her shoulders hunched. She turned around and Josh could see her face was streaked with tears. He wrapped his arms around her and held her close as she finally broke down soaking his shirt with her tears.

‘Sweetheart you’re going to have to tell me why you’re so upset I’m no clairvoyant’ Josh said stroking her hair.

‘I didn’t tell you why I ran off and I feel stupid’ Louisa mumbled into his chest ‘I’m so sorry J! I really am’

Josh laced his fingers through hers and let her over to the sofa where he sat her down.

‘Start from the beginning’ He said.

With a shuddering breath Louisa started from the beginning.

‘The reason I ran off on you is because I was scared’ she said.

‘Scared of what?

‘Of a man saying he loved me’ Louisa said with a great sniff ‘after Chris cheated on me, on the morning of our wedding I closed off my heart to any sort of romantic love. You know you’re my first boyfriend since Chris? I haven’t even been on a date since then. I took a risk by saying yes to you asking me out on a date in the first place. I’m an emotional mess J you don’t want to be with someone like me you really don’t’

‘How do you know I don’t?’ Josh said rubbing her left knee ‘don’t you think you ought to let me decide who I want to be with?’

‘Well....y-yes’ Louisa said going bright red ‘I’ve fucked up majorly Josh can you forgive me?’

‘Yeah I can Lou but you have to understand what you did really hurt me’ Josh said ‘I don’t give my heart away to anyone you know. I don’t pretend to understand the hurt you experienced but I also know what it’s like to have your heart crushed albeit not in the same way. I do understand what it’s like to experience hurt and I don’t like that you presumed I didn’t. Don’t you ever do that again’

More tears leaked out of Louisa’s eyes.
‘I feel like such a idiot’ she mumbled ‘I was just scared J I need to know you truly do love me that this isn’t a fling’

Josh leaned forward and kissed her softly.
‘I don’t consider it a ’fling’ he said ‘as I said to you I know what I feel and you’re going to have to be happy with that’

‘Louisa kissed him back.
‘I’m such an idiot’ she said rolling her eyes.

‘No you’re not’ Josh said ‘you did something idiotic that doesn’t mean you’re an idiot’

‘Hmm well I beg to differ’ Louisa said with a watery chuckle ‘so are we cool now?’

‘Yeah we’re cool’ Josh said ‘I’ve missed you, you know? I’ve had a very boring few days’

Louisa scooted closer to him.
‘I have too’ she said resting her forehead against his ‘Mel my friend at work who’s minding Mocha and Cookie for me while I’m away has figured out I was having man problems. I didn’t go into great detail but she did suggest it was a good idea I pull my head out my arse and apologise. Mum suggested I do it too’

‘Two extraordinarily wise women’ Josh said in amusement kissing the bridge of her nose ‘what time your plane leave tomorrow?’

‘Seven thirty PM’ Louisa said tipping her head to the side as he trailed kisses down her neck and along the line of her collarbone ‘you know J I’m not ready to say I love you just yet but you do mean the world to me. I’m hoping you can help heal me and help me say it out loud’

‘Let’s see how things go from here huh?’ Josh said ‘I won’t push you, you know I won’t say what you feel when you feel comfortable’

Louisa shivered as he suckled on a particularly sensitive spot on her neck.
‘Ah that tickles!’ she said with a squeak ‘don’t start if you can’t finish’

‘Who says I can’t finish?’ Josh breathed in her ear working his hands under her shirt and unsnapping her bra

Louisa kissed Josh hungrily then ran her fingers over his chest and started unbuttoning his shirt.
‘D-don’t you think we should go upstairs to the bedroom?’ she breathed.

‘No I think we can stay here’ Josh said pulling away momentarily to slip her shirt and bra off ‘we can start here and finish upstairs what d’you think?’

Louisa slipped his shirt over his shoulders.
‘Sounds good’ she whispered reaching for his belt ‘I’ve missed you J I really have’

Josh captured one of her nipples in his mouth.
‘I’ve missed you too’ he murmured huskily helping her out of her skirt and knickers ‘god I need you I don’t know how much preamble I can stand beautiful’

‘Let me get it’ Louisa said her eyes sparkling.

Louisa leaned over to the coffee table and picked up Josh’s phone. She pressed answer and put the phone to her ear.
‘Good afternoon you’ve reached the cell phone of the sexiest violin virtuoso in the world Joshua Bell, he’s unable to get to the phone at the moment because he’s ‘tied up’ but if you would like to leave a message with me Louisa his ‘personal’ assistant I will make sure he gets your message’

‘Oh my god you two have made up haven’t you?’ Rachel said as Louisa giggled ‘have you really tied my brother up?’

‘No but it’s a great idea thanks Rach’ Louisa said with a giggle d’you want to speak to your brother? Because he is a little pre-occupied at the moment’

‘Oh Christ I rang in the middle of you two fucking didn’t I?’ Rachel groaned in embarrassment.

‘Not in the middle’ Louisa said with a trill of laughter ‘I’ll let your imagination run wild’

‘Yuck no offence hon but imagining my brother getting jiggy with it is not something I need in my minds eye’ Rachel said dryly ‘when you’ve finished with him get him to drop me a line alright?’

‘Will do’ Louisa said ‘but you can let everyone know we’re alright we’ve well and truly made up’

‘Good I’ll catch you later then’

Louisa hung up then dropped Josh’s Blackberry back on the coffee table.

‘I cannot believe you answered my cell like that!’ Josh said in mock anger ‘now everyone’s going to know what we were up to’

Louisa leaned forward and kissed him hungrily.
‘You don’t know that’ she murmured nibbling on his bottom lip ‘and who cares if they did? Let them talk, I just want now to be about us’

Josh once again felt himself harden in side her
‘It is’ he murmured as she started slowly riding him again ‘it definitely is’

The following day Louisa and Josh did nothing but make love. Anywhere they fancied and on whatever surface they fancied no item of furniture was spared. They’d even done it outside in the biting Manhattan cold.

‘I am never letting you convince me to do that ever again!’ Louisa exclaimed as they rushed inside teeth chattering ‘who the hell in their right mind has sex outside when it’s snowing?’

‘Uh we do?’ Josh said in amusement as Louisa rushed over to the fireplace to warm up.

‘You’re a bugger Joshua Bell’ Louisa said with a roll of her eyes as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the neck ‘only you could convince me doing it outside is a even halfway decent idea’

‘Well it was the only place left in the whole apartment we hadn’t done it’ Josh whispered in her ear reaching around to cup her breasts in his hands.

‘No I want to stay in their good books’ Josh said reluctantly letting her go ‘who knows I might meet them one day and I want it to be on good terms’

Louisa turned around and dropped a chaste kiss on his lips.
‘How about joining me in the shower?’ she suggested with a lascivious grin ‘I need to have one and you’re the best person to soap my back’

After another loud and enthusiastic round of lovemaking in the shower Louisa and Josh dressed and were soon on their way to J.F.K airport. Louisa spent the whole trip with her hand down Josh’s trousers just holding his package.

‘You’re going to be my undoing one day you know that?’ Josh said as they pulled into the short term car parking shed at J.F.K I had to use all my self control not to crash the car on our way here’

‘All that and I didn’t even move’ Louisa said with a giggle hauling one of her suitcases onto a trolley ‘all that and I was only cupping you’

‘Oh you so did move don’t try and bullshit me’ Josh said in amusement slinging her violin and viola cases over his right shoulder.

‘Aw but you love it when I bullshit you’ Louisa said with a grin as they set off toward the international departures area.

‘I’ll let you believe that sweetheart’

They reached the international check in desks and Louisa checked into her flight to Hong Kong. Then each with an instrument case in hand Louisa and Josh made their way through the security check to gate sixteen where Louisa’s flight was due to leave an hour and a half later.

‘So what are you doing for New Years Eve?’ Louisa asked.

‘Nothing special planned’ Josh said ‘just a get together at the family farm. Lisa’s playing with the New Jersey Phil at their New Year’s Eve Concert so I’ve got the boys with me. It’ll be nothing more than a few drinks around the fire with Mom and my sisters and a few Aunts and Uncles. Once the New Year’s been rung in it’ll be bed time I think’

‘The boys will want to stay way up past midnight’ Louisa said with a giggle ‘I always did when I was small. But I always started early and never quite managed to conserve the energy to see the New Year in’

‘Yeah well I’m hoping that’ll be the same for Jo, Sam and Ben’ Josh said dryly 'they're quite stubborn little kids my sons. I think if I want any chance of him being in bed long before midnight comes I’ll have to tire them out during the day’

‘Hmm stubborn like their father that explains everything’ Louisa said with a great snort of laughter ‘you’re all reluctant to go to bed every night that’s one thing I’ve noticed about the four of you’

‘Yeah but you’re the one constant that can get us there for two totally different reasons of course’ Josh said in amusement ‘I’m glad the boys like you they all call you Loo Boo you know that? To whoever they talk to. Lisa tells me at every access visit. The boys are always going on about you apparently’

‘And I suppose that still pisses her off?’ Louisa said an edge creeping into her voice ‘you know I don’t hate that woman but the hostility she has toward me is getting a little wearing. I haven’t even met her! I’m not sure I want to the vitriol she spat at me when I answered your cell a couple of weeks ago put me off’

‘Hmm I’m not exactly sure why she hates you either’ Josh said ‘but I’m not doing to push it and find out what her beef is I don’t want another screaming match like the one we had when she found out we were dating. I still talk to her Mom about Josef, Sam and Ben and Maria reckons she’s jealous’

‘Of what?’ Louisa exclaimed.

‘Us’ Josh said.

‘Us? Why?’ Louisa exclaimed incredulously ‘we’re just a joe average couple we’re not the King and Queen of England’

Josh chuckled at her joke.
‘I know we’re not but Maria reckons it’s the normalcy Lisa’s jealous of apparently things aren’t going real good with her new partner and she sees things going between us perfectly’

‘God if she only knew a few days ago’ Louisa said with a snort.

‘Yeah well I didn’t let her know about that’ Josh said putting and arm around her waist and resting a hand low on her hip ‘I said you were at a conference in Florida’

‘What did the boys say about me not being around?

‘I told them you were away working too’ Josh said ‘but they’re smart kids I think they could tell I was lying’

‘Well he ought to figure out that things between us are good now’ Louisa said ‘How long have you got him for?’

‘Til the fourth of January’ Josh said ‘that’s when the Philharmonic’s New Year concert series ends. I might be having him longer though I suggested to Lisa she ought to go on a proper holiday. So it’s entirely possible I’ll be bringing Jo to the airport with me when we come to pick you up’

‘How long are you two in Indiana for?

‘Ten days’ Josh said ‘we head off in two days then fly back into New York on the third two days before you get home’

‘Sounds like it’ll be a real blokes trip’ Louisa said with a soft smile.

‘Of course it will, we’ll get drunk have a variety of tattoos and piercings done then go cruising for chicks’ Josh said with a deep belly laugh.

Louisa rolled her eyes.
‘Ha ha ha’ she said dryly ‘as if you’re too old to go cruising for chicks Joshua Bell and if you did I’d be forced to punish you’

‘Maybe that’s something we can discuss once you get home’ Josh whispered in her ear as he drew her close ‘I’ll definitely be ready for some sort of punishment by then’

‘I am not having sex in the same house as a five and two three and half year olds!’ Louisa hissed ‘I can’t be quiet and you know they would go home and tell their Mum ‘Dad and Loo Boo were jumping on each other’ if he walked in on us’

‘You’re too sensible’ Josh said resting his chin on her head ‘but you know the boys sleep throughout the night they always have and generally they sleep though a nuclear holocausts. The only time in recent memory I can remember any of them waking up during the night is last year when Jo got chicken pox. He barely slept then’

‘Poor kid chicken pox is a bitch’ Louisa said ‘I was six when I got it and it was two weeks of pure misery. Mum and Dad had to duct tape woollen mittens to my hands so I wouldn’t gauge out the sores. I can’t ever remember being in so much agony’

An hour later the first boarding call for Louisa’s flight was broadcast over the P.A system.

‘Good evening ladies and gentlemen this call is for all passengers flying Qantas Airways flight QF1010 from J.F.K International to Melbourne International Australia via Hong Kong. All passengers holding boarding passes for this flight are kindly asked to make their way to gate nineteen in preparation for departure’

‘Mmmph that’s me’ Louisa mumbled mid-kiss ‘dammit I don’t want to go’

‘Yes you do you haven’t seen your family since May’ Josh said brushing a stray bang of hair from her eyes ‘go on the sooner you get on the plane the sooner you’ll get to Australia then the sooner you’ll be able to return to New York’

‘Wish you could come with me’ Louisa said hugging him tightly her voice muffled in his neck.

‘Maybe one day I will’ Josh said returning the hug and kissing her hungrily ‘I’ll miss you’

Their kisses became feverish
‘I’ll miss you’ Louisa whispered her blue eyes welling with tears ‘I’ll ring you when I get to Hong Kong then Melbourne alright?’

‘Okay you have a safe flight’ Josh said furtively squeezing her backside ‘I love you’

Louisa smiled.
‘I know you do’ she whispered resting her forehead against his ‘see you soon J’

‘See you Lou’

Reluctantly Louisa pulled away and joined the line to have her boarding pass scanned. Then with a wave she disappeared down the sky bridge and out of view.
