Winds of Destiny (Pt14)
Making sure that Joe actually left, Nick stopped by Crystal’s room to reassure her that Sav was fine and Joe was gone. Bidding her a goodnight he returned to the bedroom where Sav was still sitting on the bed. Nick put the sword away, then turned to him, noticing that he was gently rubbing the cut on his lip.
“Are we staying in here tonight?”
“I don’t want to go back in the other one.” Sav replied softly.
“Alright. I need to get a few things from the other room.” He was only gone a few minutes and placed the items where they needed to be.
“Would you like a hot bath, to help you relax?”
“No.” Sav mumbled and stood up. “I’m just going to sit in that chair for while, get my thoughts sorted.”
Nick stopped him as he passed, gently lifting his head. Using his thumb, he lightly brushed his lips, then leaned forward to kiss him.
“You didn’t have to cut him.”
“That was the only thing that would stop his determination to talk to you. The cuts weren’t deep and he will heel quickly. Although, I can’t say the same for you.” Nick glanced at the cut on his lip.
Sav dropped his head. “It will eventually.”
“I believe it is time to move on.” Nick said, knowing that Sav didn’t want to talk about the previous hours.
“Sounds good to me.” Sav replied, trying to smile.
“You name the place and I will take care of the rest.”
“um…I don’t care where we go, just…no caves.”
Nick smiled, trying to lighten the mood, sliding his arms around his waist. “Alright...no caves. I’ll get the arrangements made and we can leave by weeks end.”
“Sounds great.” Sav kissed him this time, then pulled away.
Waiting for him to get comfortable in the chair, Nick was reluctant to leave him alone, leave him vulnerable, but decided against pushing him by lingering to close. “If you need anything, I’ll be downstairs for a bit.”
When he didn’t get a response, Nick left him alone. Going downstairs to the kitchen, he pulled out his phone, proceeding to look-up their next destination. Smiling to himself when he found the perfect place, thinking how far out of touch they will be, well, not completely out of touch. The third call produced exactly what he was looking for. Tapping the pen on the paper while he was put on hold, Nick glanced toward the ceiling and for the first time allowed himself to feel the sadness coming from Sav. A touch of depression spilled over that sadness, causing Nick to worry. He knew all to well what happened when Sav would start to sink to that level.
Although Sav told him many times he was enjoying their time together, Nick knew that he wasn’t himself. Another plan formulated in his mind while he waited. He would do anything and everything to help bring Sav back to be more of himself.
“What..yes..yes, I’m still here.” Nick quickly replied into the phone. “You do…wonderful…two, no make that three months….money will not an issue...what ever it cost….I’m perfectly capable of handling it, but I will need someone else during the day…that’s great…Is tomorrow evening to soon?” Nick wrote down the information and slid the notepad to the side. “I apologize for the late call, these arrangements couldn’t be delayed any longer…wonderful…yes. I look forward to meeting you also…goodbye.” Hanging up the phone, he stood up to turn off the lights.
Now that a new goal was set in motion, Nick bounded back upstairs to their room. Shedding his clothes, he slid under the sheets and picked up the book from the table, turning to the marked page.
Several hours later, Sav stood from the chair, stretching his lean frame, after a quick glance at he Nick disappeared to the bathroom. Caming out a few minutes later, wearing a pair of boxer’s that Nick had laid out for him. Pulling back the sheet he climbed in beside him, tossing the extra pillow to the floor. “I though you finished that book.”
Nick snapped it closed and dropped it to the floor. “I’m finished.” Turning the light off, he scooted down to slid closer to Sav, running his hand over his chest and down to his stomach. “Feeling better?”
“Yes, but not…”
“That is not what I had in mind. Your rest is more important than my needs.”
“I’m really tired after what….”
“Would you like to talk about it?”
“No.” Sav quickly told him. “You were probably listening anyway.”
“I was.” Nick confessed and kissed his shoulder. “I have an apology of my own to you.”
“What for?” Sav twisted to see his face.
“I didn’t believe that anyone was following you. Even when you insisted that there was and to find out it was Joe.”
“Imagine my shock a..and anger…”
“I did feel it.” Nick cut him off, propping on his elbow to look down at him.
Sav turned more on his back. “I really was going back home next week, try to ignore everything, but after tonight, finding out that it was Joe all this time….he made the situation worse between us.”
“Perhaps…you are being too hard on him.”
“I don’t think I am.”
“He did try to explain and apologize.”
Sav yanked the sheet over his shoulder. “Whose side are you on?” He huffed, turning on his side facing away from Nick.
“I’m on your side Richard.” Nick replied gently rubbing his shoulder.
“I’m not going to talk about it anymore…now go to sleep.” Sav took a deep breath and blew it out slowly, settling deeper in the mattress and closer to Nick.
***
He had met the young man the night before, following him and his friends down the streets of Nice. He watched him in the club, dancing and drinking, waiting for the opportunity to approach him. When he did, Joe was taken back by the blue of his eyes that reminded him of…he had dashed those thoughts and introduced himself. They had spent the rest of the night together, talking and getting to know each other.
Joe had asked him out to dinner for the following evening and was pleased that he had accepted. Picking him up at his apartment, he drove them to the posh restaurant where he had made reservation for them. Joe had his arm draped across his shoulder as they followed the hostess to their table, while whispering in his ear. Looking up, Joe came to a jolting stop, pulling the young man against his chest.
“Well…what a nice surprise.” Joe smiled wide staring at the three around the table.
“Hi Joe.” Crystal returned a stiff smile.
“Joseph.” Came Nick’s clipped greeting.
Sav briefly looked up at him then darted his eyes to the man standing beside him. For the first time since they had been together all those years, the pricks of jealousy hit him close to his heart from the way Joe’s hand had dropped to the handsome young mans waist. Sav turned his gaze away and picked up his glass to take a sip.
Joe ignored Sav’s cold reception. “We have dinner reservation and I didn’t expect to run into…oh…where are my manners? This is Chris Mitchell, Chris I liked you to meet some of my friends…Crystal.”
“Hi Chris, nice to meet you.” She smiled, extended her hand.
“Nicholas de Brabant or Nick…asshole works too.”
Nick shot Joe a heated glare as he stood up, then smiled politely as he shook his hand. “Likewise Mr. Mitchell. Are you Joseph’s new boyfriend?”
Chris chuckled at his question. “We only met last night.”
Keeping his smile in place, Nick continued to stare at the young man. “I don’t ever recall Joseph picking up men for a date.”
Joe looked at Chris, gently squeezing his side. “Anything is possible…and this is….what is it this year…Sav…Rick or Richard?”
“Any of them will do.” Sav also stood to shake his hand.
The hostess was standing behind them and cleared her throat. “Mr. Elliott your table is ready.”
Joe turned to face her, then back to the group already seated. “I think we will join them instead…you don’t mind do you?” Not waiting for a reply, he pulled out the chair for Chris next to Crystal while he took the seat across from Sav. “Yes this will be fine. I’ll have whatever these two are drinking and whatever Chris wants….and a menu.”
The hostess glanced at Nick who waved her off. “So Mr. Mitchell, you’re an American?"
“Yes…from Maine, studying architecture of the buildings here.”
“France is well known for its magnificent architecture. You could spend hours studying Saint Mark’s Square.”
“But I don’t want to spend hours talking about it.” Joe cut in. “A building is a building no matter which angle you look at it.”
“To the untrained eye it is.” Chris told him.
“Well, we won’t be looking at a lot of buildings in the next few days.” Joe smiled at him then pointed at the menu.
“What will you be looking at Joseph?” Nick smirked.
“Chris here will be looking at the ceiling in my hotel room.” Joe twirled the blood wine in his glass, then cut his eyes to Sav. “…from the bed.”
Chris snapped his gaze to him, a slight blush on his cheeks. “A little forward in assuming that aren’t you Joe?”
“Sorry, it…slipped. You can have whatever you want on the menu.”
“It’s all very expensive.” Chris replied looking back at the menu.
“Don’t worry about it. Nick will pay for it. Won’t you Nick?”
“You can p….” Nick started, but Sav’s hand landed on his thigh, a silent plea not to start anything with Joe. “Of course.”
“Wonderful.”
“How long have you been in Nice, Chris?” Crystal asked when he finished placing his order.
“Not just here, all over France for two years. It’s been a very enjoyable experience so far.”
“We’ve been here a few months on a…sort of a vacation.” Crystal replied.
“I love it here, and may not be going back home, at least not for a few more years anyway. There is so much to see and do here.”
“France, as a whole, can be very impressionable to young ones.” Nick commented as he took in Chris’s youthful features. “If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?”
“That’s a rude question.” Crystal huffed.
“No, it’s alright. I’m 23 Mr. de Brabant.”
Nick had a look of shock on his face, then darted his gaze to Joe “My, my...he is quite young for you Joseph, don’t you think?”
“Not really, I think it’s a good change…you know…from the much older boyfriend I use to have.” Joe looked to Sav. “Isn’t that right, Rick?”
“Whatever you want Joe.”
“Speaking of long over-do…change….” Joe yanked the ring from his finger and tossed it on the table in front of Sav. “…you can have that back.”
“What do you want me to do with it?”
“I don’t care what you do with it. I taped the other one to a golf ball and knocked it off in the woods behind our home….my home.” Taking a sip of his blood wine, Joe sat his glass down. “It was a childish gesture to give it to me in the first place.”
“Joe, do you...” Crystal leaned against the table, intently staring at him.
“He’s right Crystal. It was childish to give it to him. Just like I was shallow enough to believe he loved me.” Sav tossed his napkin on the table and abruptly stood. “Excuse me.”
“That was…how long were you together?” Chris asked Joe when Sav was out of the restaurant.
“A shitty way of breaking up with him too.”
Smiling broadly at Crystal, he turned his attention to Chris. “Waaay too long.” Joe raised his brows.
“I find it in very poor taste that you would bring your new, much younger boyfriend to parade in front of him.”
“Lets not forget how many he paraded in front of me Nick.” Joe quickly shot back. “You, being the one I despised seeing the most.”
“um, if there is a problem with me being here, I could leave.”
“That’s quiet alright Mr. Mitchell, stay, enjoy your meal.” Nick shifted in his seat to lean across the table to refill Joe’s glass.
“Thank you.” Joe smirked.
“You are most welcome.” Nick replied with a stiff smile.
Joe drained his glass and pushed his chair back. “Excuse me a moment.”
Chris watched him leave, then glanced at Crystal and Nick. Crystal smiled, asking him how is dinner was. Nick leaned back in his chair to quietly observe him, while one part of his mind sought out where Sav had gone and what he was feeling, waiting for the slightest sign that he was needed in case Joe became to demanding.
~~
Joe knew where to find him and landed softly on the graveled roof several feet behind him. Shoving his hands deep in his pockets, forcing his mind and body to stay calm to keep himself from stalking over to Sav to kiss him silly, as Amber would tell him. That didn’t work all those months ago and probably wouldn’t work now.
Sav felt his presence behind him. “What do you want Joe?”
“I..I..can we finish talking now?”
“No, I heard all I wanted to hear the other night.”
Joe let the silence linger between them, watching Sav’s hair blow in the gentle breeze. “Why are you still holding it against me? I made one little mistake and you act like….”
“Little mistake?” Sav spun around. “Putting blame on some one is not a mistake.”
“One fucking mistake and you leave me…for him!”
“I didn’t leave you.” Sav replied, irritation lacing his voice.
Ignoring his response Joe continued with his line of thought. “How many mistakes have you made Rick?”
“Plenty, most of which I own up to, but the one I tried to make myself believe wasn’t a mistake.”
“And what is that?”
“That you loved me.”
“I do love you!” Joe yelled, yanking his hands from his pockets, then taking a step toward him. “Why else would I have followed you here!?”
“To play some sick twisted game, hoping to get a trophy for it.”
“OK…” Joe held up his hands in surrender, keeping the anger under control. “… I have to admit that was the wrong thing to do. I should have just come to you, begged you to listen to me.”
“To listen to more of your lies or hateful words.”
“No...Rick please, all that matters now is us and talking this out.”
“I tried to do that already!”
“You don’t have to yell.”
“You are yelling too and I hear you, but you’re not hearing me!” Sav yelled again. “Forget it, I don’t want to do this anymore, go back to your new lover and have a fucking ball.”
Joe stuck his hands back in his pockets as Sav flopped on the raised ledge, staring off to the side. The sounds of the city drifted up to them from below.
Joe shuffled his feet and glanced at him. “I still don’t know why you always forgive Nick and not me.”
Sav’s mouth dropped open in disbelief at how quickly Joe brought that up again. “He has nothing to do with our situation, so stop bringing him into this!”
Joe glanced around the roof, then back at Sav. “He has a lot to do with it, you’re here with him instead of at home with me.”
“Now you’re blaming Nick for our problems.”
“No, I’m not.”
Sav stood up and brushed past him. “This is pointless.”
“Rick please…don’t run away again.”
“Why should I stay? It’s obvious this is going no where. Just like the other night and the times before that.” Sav stormed to the other side of the roof, wanting nothing more than to leap over the edge to fly away, but the love for the man he felt move toward him, kept him grounded to where he stood. “You want an answer about Nick?” Sav broke the short silence. “Are you listening, because I’m not going to repeat it and never want to hear you ask again?”
“I’m listening.”
Facing him again, Sav met his eyes. “I never forgave him for what he did to me, still does to me…I don’t have to, because he never promised me anything…you promised me everything.” Turning around again, he looked out over the brightly lit city below, pulling the cool night air into his lungs. A few minutes later, he felt Joe’s arms slowly go around his waist, pulling gently to press their bodies together.
“I’m sorry for everything that’s happened between us, all the anguish I’ve put you through.”
Closing his eyes, Sav took another deep breath, pulling the scent of the man behind deep into his lungs. “You have done a lot of that the past year and I forgave you, because I understood, because I love you.” Sav turned in his arms to stare deep into those green eyes, the same ones that haunt him in his dreams. “You want to know what cuts the deepest, further then anything that Nick has done to me over the years? The blame about Thomas, its still…”
“But I have come to terms…” Joe said softly.
Sav was slowly shaking his head.
“I have…what is it going to take for you to believe that?”
“I told you the other night Joe, it doesn’t go away that fast.”
“I forgave you every time Rick. It didn’t matter what you did, I always waited for you with open arms, no questions asked.”
“I know you did,” Sav played with the tiny button on Joe’s shirt, not meeting his eyes as he continued. “You have to find peace within yourself, for Thomas, as I have…and me…until then…I don’t know.”
Joe released him and stepped away, he glanced out at the city lights, listening to he different sounds floating on the air. “So that’s it then. It’s really over between us this time?”
Sav closed the space between them again, bringing his hand up to gently pull Joe’s gaze to his. “It’s never over between us, not now or in the future.”
“But we can’t be together now.”
“No.” Sav whispered. “Go home, talk to some one, some one that can help you sort out the pain of losing Thomas, your anger...the blame.”
Joe tried to smile, as tears glistened in his eyes. “Only you can help me with all of that.”
Sav saw the hopeful look in his eyes.
“I’m grateful you finally told me about Nick. It makes better sense now and why you keep going back to him.”
Moving closer to him, Sav brushed away the tear that slide down his cheek. “I can help you face the problems Joe, but it can’t be anymore than that.”
“You just told me to go home, now you want me to stay.”
“Just to talk, to sort out your issues that are consuming you from the inside.”
Joe sniffled and looked at his feet. “No, that’s OK. I don’t want to be a burden to you.”
“You won’t be a burden.”
“Thanks anyway.” Glancing at him again, Joe turned and walked to the other side of the building. Taking a deep breath, he shut Sav from his mind and leaped into the air.
“Joe…” Sav called out to him, but knew he wouldn’t come back. He blew out on a shaky breath and sat on the gravel roof. He lay back to stare up at the stars, until they became blurry from the tears that pooled in his eyes. “…don’t do anything foolish.”
