"All the fear has left me now,
I'm not frightened anymore.
It's my heart that pounds beneath my flesh,
It's my mouth that pushes out this breath."

"Hey," Alyssa greeted softly as she sat next to Kelly in the waiting room.
"Hey," Kelly nodded in reply.
Alyssa shifted nervously in her seat.
"So how long do I get this free pass for?" Kelly asked, continuing to face forward and watch the various people that walked by.
Alyssa let out a breath of relief.
"You don't want to have this talk just as much as me, huh?"
"I'm really not looking forward to it. Right now I can still play dumb, you know?"
Kelly nodded again, "So I have a question."
"Ok, shoot," Alyssa replied, relaxing in her chair.
"How'd you get in here? Kate said the police were outside only letting family members in."
"I'm your sister," Alyssa reminded. "That's considered family."
"Shouldn't they just be letting Care's family in?"
"I don't think they really knew what was going on. They just knew that the both of you were in here, and that their job was to keep the paparazzi out."
"How'd you prove you were my sister?" Kelly asked curiously. "I mean, your license doesn't say Clarkson."
"Yea, I realized that after I pulled it out to show them, so I called Ashley to come out and vouch for me."
Kelly frowned.
"Don't be cross with her. She was worried about you and thought me being here would help."
"Did she call and tell you to come out here?"
"No, I was watching the concert on tv. The cameras didn't catch what happened backstage, but they got you walking with Carrie to the ambulance."
"And that made you fly out here?"
"Kellbell--"
"Please don't call me that," Kelly cut her off.
"Sorry," Alyssa sighed. "But you're my baby sister. I've known you your entire life. I know when
something's wrong. I've never seen you as lost as you were right then."
Kelly's head fell.
"I was already boarding a flight over here when Mom called asking if I would come out and check on you. She said you and Carrie had gotten to be close friends, so you could probably use someone to come take care of you for a few days while all this was going on."
"I can take care of myself. I'm not a child, anymore."
"When something big like this happens, you shut down. You don't eat unless someone pretty much force feeds you. You don't sleep until you pass out from exhaustion. You don't--"
"Ok, ok, I get it. But I have friends who take perfectly good care of me."
"So I've witnessed."
"Then why'd you come?"
"You know why," she replied flatly.
Kelly rubbed her eyes tiredly, "I have nothing to say to you."
"What happened to waiting to have this conversation?"
"What's the point? I'm your sister too, remember? I can read you just as easily as you can read me, and I knew exactly how you felt from the look on your face the moment I walked into the waiting room with the doctor, and you know what? I'm not going to explain myself to you. I'm tired of having to explain myself and my feelings to everyone, and I'm done with it."
"Kelly, listen--"
"You're not going to talk me out of it, so don't bother trying. Honestly, I don't even know why you came over here because it's just going to be a waste of time."
Alyssa frowned.
Kelly shook her head, "I'm going find Ashley to see if she's heard anything new."

"Still waters, heavy hearts
Plans we make all fall apart
Disillusioned and lost in the gray
How can we fix the heart when it breaks?
Don't know how much more you can take."

Kelly mumbled a choice selection of curse words as someone shook her awake. She opened a groggy eye to find Ashley hovering over her as she lay on a disregarded gurney that was in one of the hospital's halls.
"Only you," Ashley shook her head with a chuckle. "How'd you find this?"
"I looked for it," Kelly replied simply, as she sat up, stretching. "What's up? Is Care awake?"
"No, not yet."
"Then why'd you wake me up?"
"Because you need to go home and take a shower and freshen up some. You're still in your concert clothes from yesterday."
"I'm fine," Kelly waved her off. "You go."
"I already went. So did your brother."
"Then tell Kate to go."
"She won't unless you go with her."
"But she needs a break."
"I know," Ashley folded her arms.
"Come on, Ash, that isn't fair and you know it."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Yes you do. You know I'd go if that was the only way to get Kate to go."
Ashley shrugged.
"But...but what if Care wakes up and I'm not here?"
"Kelly, let's be honest, ok? Even if you were here when she woke up, what good would that do? You know her family doesn't want you seeing her."
"But if she asks for me, they have to let," Kelly argued.
"When she wakes up, she's going to be tired and weak and all fuzzy..."
"Are you saying she's not going to ask for me?" Kelly's eyes narrowed slightly.
"No, I have no doubt in my mind that your name is going to be the first thing out of her mouth. I'm just saying that her parents are going to wave it off because of the state she's in. She's not going to be strong enough to fight them right away. You may not get to see her until a few days after she wakes up. I mean, we don't know how extensive the surgery was, so we don't know what her recovery is going to be like."
Kelly sighed, rubbing her face tiredly.
"Go home. Take Kate with you. Take a shower. Get some good, non-hospital food in you. Take a break. Then come back refreshed, ok?"
"You'll call the second anything happens?"
"The millisecond," Ashley promised.

"Something smells good," Kelly noted as she walked into the kitchen of her Tennessee home after having taken a hot shower.
"Lasagna," Kate replied as she pulled the dish out of the oven.
"Aw, you didn't have to do that..." Kelly noted as she leaned against the countertop.
"Do what? Take it out of the box and put it in the oven. Then take it out of the oven after I took a shower?"
Kelly shook her head.
"Come on, grab you a plate," Kate motioned to the place settings she had already taken out.
"You really didn't have to do this," Kelly insisted as she grabbed both of the plates, holding them out to the taller blonde.
"I know, that's what makes me so amazing, right?"
Kelly laughed softly, "Right."
"Now, there's the sound I wanna hear," Kate smiled as she brought the plates over to the snackbar.
"Thank you," Kelly gave a small smile back as she settled into her chair.
"You know I'm here for whatever you need," Kate replied, sitting down next to her.
Kelly nodded, her jaw tensing.
Kate reached over, rubbing her back gently, "You ok?"
"I just...I'm tired..." she sniffed back tears. "I'm tired, and I need to see her."
"I know," Kate soothed. "And we're working on that, I promise."
"Kate, I'm sorry, I can't eat this," Kelly pushed her plate away.
"It's ok. I should've fixed something lighter, but that's all I could find."
"Yea, we were supposed to go grocery shopping today, but..."
"Why don't we just forget the food and go watch tv for a little while? How does that sound?"
"No, you need to eat," Kelly motioned to the plate before her.
"I'm not that hungry," Kate admitted. "My appetite's been shot lately."
"How about some ice cream?" Kelly offered, standing up and walking over the refrigerator. "We always have ice cream."
"I'm supposed to be taking care of you right now, not the other way around, remember?"
Kelly sighed, "I know, but...I just can't think about it right now. I can't think about anything right now because everything reminds me of her, and it hurts so much, so I just...I go into robot mode and just...what comes easier to me than taking care of my buddy?" she asked, not meeting her eye as Kate stood and walked around the snack bar to join her by the fridge.
"KC..."
"Please?" Kelly's voice cracked as Kate pulled her into a tight hug.
"Fine, but only because I'm amazing, remember?"
"Always," Kelly pulled back, wiping her eyes. "So... chocolate or vanilla?"
Kate frowned at the tear trails on her cheeks.
"Chocolate or vanilla?" Kelly repeated.
"Chocolate," Kate gave in, shaking her head.
