“I just want to be with you,
Cuz living is so hard to do
When all I know is trapped inside your eyes.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Excuse me, please, excuse me," Kelly fought her way through the crowd that had gathered outside of the hospital, various flashes going off. "Please, excuse me, please...can y'all just move!"
The crowd silenced, finally making way for the short Texan to pass as Kate offered an apology while ushering Kelly inside.
Kelly hurried through the entrance, nearly knocking over a nurse.
"Sorry," Kate helped set her right before running after the singer. "Kelly, slow down."
Kelly turned the corner, finding Ashley and Jason standing in the waiting room, "She's up?"
"Yea, but--" Ashley began before holding an arm out to stop her from continuing to the elevators. "Kelly, wait."
"Let me go," Kelly struggled against her.
"Kelly, hey, slow down," Jason took her arms in his hands, holding her still.
"She's awake?" Kelly's eyes passed back and forth over the pair of them.
Kate bent over, catching her breath as she finally caught up to them.
"She's awake," Ashley nodded slowly. "She's awake, but she's really tired. She keeps dozing off."
"I wanna see her," Kelly tried to push past them again.
"Kelly, we talked about this," Ashley reminded carefully. "Her family isn't going to let you see her."
"They can't do this, they..." Kelly's voice trailed off, her eyes moving over Jason and Ashley's shoulders as the elevator doors opened. "You can't do this! You can't keep me from her!"
Ashley glanced back to find Carrie's mom and sister coming off the elevator. "Kelly, stop."
"You can't keep me from seeing her," Kelly fought against her brother's grip as Carrie's family walked nearer. "This isn't right. I need to be with her."
"You will not be stepping foot anywhere near my daughter," Carrie's mother replied sharply. "In fact, you need to leave this hospital."
"You can't make me."
"I'm going to call security."
"And tell them what?" Jason asked. "That your daughter's girlfriend is worried about her and wants to support her?"
"She is not..." her eyes turned icy as she turned from him back to Kelly. "You are not her girlfriend."
"I think your daughter is going to have something to say about that," Kelly replied. "You can't prevent me from seeing her for forever, you know. She's not going to let you do this."
"I'm her mother."
"She loves me."
"We'll see."
Kelly opened her mouth to retort, but Ashley stopped her.
"Just walk away before you say something you're going to regret," Ashley whispered.
"I doubt I'll regret this."
"Kelly."
"Damn it," she cursed, turning away from them. She let herself collapse into one of the chairs.
"KC, you can't do that," Kate gently scolded as she sat beside her. "You cause another scene like that, and the security guards will have a reason to kick you out of here, ok? Not to mention, you really need to watch what you say, and how loud you say it," she eyed Jason with a frown.
"H-How can they do this?" Kelly questioned, her voice coming out shaky.
"Don't worry about them," Ashley soothed, sitting on the other side of her. "Soon enough Carrie will be alert, and she won't just be asking for you anymore, she'll be demanding it. They can't keep you from her then."
"They're gonna try."
"Carrie's an adult," Kate pointed out. "She can choose whoever she wants to see, and if they refuse to let her, you know she'll get agitated, and then they'll be the ones the guards will be kicking out."
"She doesn't need to be getting agitated right now, though," Kelly sniffed back tears.
"I know, so I'm sure the doctor will let you see her long before that ever happens."
Kelly buried her face in her hands, feeling both of them rubbing her back comfortingly, "What happened to Alyssa?"
"She went get something to eat in the cafeteria," Ashley replied.
Kelly sighed.
"I don't think she's going anywhere, Kelly."
"I wish they would all just go away," she shook her head.
"It's gonna be ok."
"And I really wish everybody would stop saying that," she frowned, sitting back up.
“I've been beaten down,
I've been kicked around,
But she takes it all for me.
And I lost my faith,
In my darkest days,
But she makes me want to believe.”
Kelly shifted, curling up tighter in the uncomfortable hospital chair as someone continued to repeat her name over and over again. A gentle hand shook her shoulder, and she groaned, rubbing her eyes tiredly, “What?”
“Miss Clarkson?”
Kelly immediately sat up at the sound of Carrie’s doctor’s voice, “Yes?”
“Good, I’m glad you’re up,” he smiled from the chair next to her. “I was asked not to wake you.”
“What are you doing here this late? Is Carrie ok? Did something happen?”
“Carrie’s doing just fine. I just picked up a night shift for a friend,” he explained.
“Ok…so why did you wake me up?”
The doctor raised an eyebrow.
“I mean, why did you not wake me up?” Kelly’s forehead wrinkled in confusion. Her mind was still too fuzzy from sleep to follow the surgeon’s strange conversation.
“Carrie’s sister, Shanna, had guard duty tonight.”
“Ok?”
“But it seems as if something came up, and she had to leave. She told me not to wake you. She said under absolutely no circumstances was I to wake you and inform you that Carrie would be by herself in her hospital room until her mother started her shift at precisely eight-thirty tomorrow morning.”
Kelly’s eyes widened in realization, “You mean…”
“I mean exactly what I said.”
“Is she…”
“If you are asking whether or not she’s in the same room you last saw her in, I wouldn’t be able to answer that question,” he nodded his head.
“Thank you,” Kelly stood quickly. “Thank you so much.”
“For what? I didn’t do anything,” he reminded with a pointed look.
“Got it,” Kelly grinned, her heart racing as she gave the doctor a short wave before making her way to the elevator.
“Kell…”
Kelly’s eyes fluttered open at the soft touch on her cheek. She was sitting in a chair next to Carrie’s hospital bed, laying with her head on the mattress. “You’re up,” she smiled, straightening up, and linking their hands together, kissing Carrie’s fingers softly.
Carrie gave a small smile in reply, her thumb grazing over the Texan’s lips, “How long have you been here?”
“Just a few hours. I was told not to wake you,” Kelly explained.
Carrie shook her head.
“No?”
“How long have you been at the hospital?”
“Ever since the concert. I rode in the ambulance with you. I left for a couple hours yesterday to go shower and stuff because Ashley and Kate made me, but I came right back as soon as I heard that you were awake.”
Carrie’s brow furrowed as she looked at her, confused.
“What’s wrong, baby?” Kelly asked, sitting next to her on the bed.
“I asked where you were. My mom said you weren’t here.”
Kelly frowned.
“I asked them to call, and they said you weren’t answering.”
“Shh…” Kelly soothed, reaching up, to brush the escaped tears off of the country singer’s cheeks. “It’s ok. I’m right here.”
“I thought…I thought you got scared. That’s why…that’s why I didn’t tell you. I was afraid you’d run.”
“I’m not running anywhere,” Kelly promised. “I’m right here. You can’t get rid of me this easily.”
Carrie smiled, tugging on her hand, “Lay with me.”
“I don’t want to hurt you,” Kelly shook her head, eyeing the wires and tubes that were attached to her cautiously.
“You won’t,” Carrie assured, taking a deep breath as the shorter girl laid down beside her. She turned her head, kissing her softly. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Kelly whispered, returning the kiss, pulling away as the heart monitor’s beeping increased in speed.
“What?”
“I’m not supposed to raise your heart rate,” she replied.
“That’s kind of impossible,” Carrie smiled, leaning to her for another kiss. “Just thinking of you makes my heart race.”
“Care…” Kelly pulled back. “I don’t want to be banned from seeing you for real.”
“Fine…for now,” Carrie winked.
Kelly laughed softly, scooting closer to her, resting her head on her shoulder, “You have no idea how amazing this feels. I needed this so much.”
Carrie kissed the top of her head, “I’m sorry I lied to you.”
“Not now,” Kelly yawned. “Now is too much of a necessity to muddy it with wrongdoings and apologies.”
Carrie kissed her forehead, letting her lips linger there. “For real?”
“For real what?”
“You said you didn’t want to be banned from seeing me for real.”
“Care,” Kelly shook her head, nuzzling into her neck.
“Who wouldn’t let you see me?”
“Please, not now. In the morning, I promise.”
“What if I’m sleeping in the morning?”
“Well, then, the next time I get to visit.”
“And when will that be?”
“Whenever your family isn’t here,” Kelly admitted reluctantly.
“Why do you have to wait until they’re not here? I’m sure if you just asked--”
“They know, Care. They know about us. Shanna told them, and now they’re refusing to let me see you.”
“W-What?”
“I’m sorry,” Kelly pushed herself up to look down at her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to stress you out with this. The doctor said to just keep you calm, and relaxed, and I’m sorry. Please don’t get upset.”
“How am I not supposed to get upset?” Carrie asked, her voice raising.
“Care, please. If you get upset, they’re gonna kick me out of here.”
Carrie closed her eyes and took a deep breath; tears blurred her vision when she reopened them.
“It’s ok,” Kelly brushed them away. “It’s gonna be ok. We’re gonna be ok.”
“My family…”
“It’s ok. We’ll figure it out, ok? Everything will all work out.”
“What if it doesn’t?”
“I’m not going anywhere,” Kelly shook her head, pressing their lips together firmly. “I love you so much.”
“I missed you,” Carrie’s hand soothed down her arm.
“I missed you too,” Kelly kissed her again before laying back down beside her.
“Baby?”
“Yea?”
“I’m tired…”
“I know, it’s alright.”
“You’re gonna lay with me for the rest of the night, right?”
“Absolutely,” Kelly smiled, kissing her cheek softly, finding the other blonde’s eyes already closed, her chest rising and falling slowly. “Sweet dreams only, got it?” she whispered, kissing her cheek once more.
