“Look at me,
Can't you see all I really want to be
Is free from a world that hurts me,
I need relief.”

“Kelly…”
Kelly groaned at the whisper next to her ear.
“Shh…Carrie’s sleeping.”
“Then why are you waking me?” she mumbled, opening an eye to glance at the tall blonde curiously.
Kate looked at her regretfully, “Ashley saw Carrie’s mom drive up.”
“What? But…what time is it?”
“Seven.”
“But that’s not fair, she wasn’t supposed to be here for another hour and a half,” Kelly fussed.
“I know, I’m really sorry.”
“It’s not your fault,” Kelly reached out, giving her arm a squeeze as she carefully untangled herself from Carrie.
Carrie shifted next to her, stretching.
“Care?” Kelly asked hopefully.
“Hmm?”
“Oh, good,“ Kelly smiled. “I was afraid you wouldn’t be awake before I had to leave.”
“And when do you have to leave?” Carrie questioned, rubbing her eyes before opening them. She noticed Kate standing beside the bed and frowned. “Now?”
“Your mom is already here,” Kate explained, apologetically.
Carrie sighed, feeling herself being pulled back into a deep sleep, “Can you give us a minute?”
Kate glanced at the door nervously.
“I won’t take long; I know she’s on her way.”
Kate nodded before exiting the hospital room, closing the door behind her.
“She looks rough,” Carrie noted.
“She’s been here as long as I have,” Kelly replied.
“Really?”
“She’s trying to return the favor for all the times I’ve looked after her.”
“She’s sweet.”
“Very,” Kelly nodded, tracing along Carrie’s jaw line with her fingertips.
“I’m gonna talk to my mom.”
“Just don’t get too worked up about it,” Kelly replied, watching the country singer struggle to keep her eyes open.
“She needs to know that I need you here…and that she can’t keep you from me.”
“I think she already knows that which is why she’s so scared.”
“You should stay.”
Kelly shook her head, “You need your sleep, and me having a confrontation with your mother isn’t going to help you get that.”
Carrie smiled, giving up the fight with her eyelids, and allowing them to remain closed, “With all the medicine I’m on, I’ll be too knocked out to hear a word.”
Kelly laughed softly as she leaned down to kiss her forehead, “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Carrie puckered her lips cutely.
Kelly chuckled, kissing her softly.
“Love you.”
“Love you too,” Kelly kissed her once more before sliding off the bed and making her way out of the hospital room.
“How is she?” Kate asked as they started to walk down the hall.
“She seems to be doing ok. She’s really drowsy from all the drugs they have her on, but I mean, she seems fine…”
“But?”
“But…I wish I knew what was wrong so that maybe I’d have something to gauge my judgement on. If I don’t know what’s wrong with her, then how do I know if she’s really doing ok? Or how do I know how long it’ll take her to heal from the surgery? I’m totally blind right now, and I hate it.”
Kate nodded in understanding as she opened the door for her.
“The stairs?” Kelly raised an eyebrow.
“Carrie’s mom is gonna be coming up the elevators, and I didn’t want to risk…”
Kelly smiled, “You are seriously an amazing friend.”
Kate shrugged as they made their way down to the first floor.
“So you came up the stairs too?”
“Are you crazy? It is way too early in the morning for calisthenics.”
“Nerd,” Kelly laughed, nudging her.
“Takes one to know one,” Kate nudged her back as they reached the first floor.
Kelly paused as she exited the stairwell, causing Kate to run into her.
“What?” Kate asked, looking over the top of her head to see what was wrong. She noticed Carrie’s mother waiting in front of a set of elevators, tapping her foot impatiently as she glanced down at her watch. “Oh.”
“She’s here early…”
“I believe we’ve established that, yes,” Kate nodded, pushing her back into the stairwell and out of view of the older woman.
“Shanna’s supposed to be here.”
“Right.”
“And she’s not.”
“Right, because she wanted to give you time to see Carrie, which I mean, is really sweet of her. I know you’re pissed about her telling Carrie’s family, but you have to at least give her credit for--”
“Kate focus,” Kelly cut her off. “Carrie’s mom is going to get upstairs to find Carrie by herself.”
“Ok, so? Where did Shanna tell the doctor she was going?”
“That she had an emergency back home she had to go check on.”
“Seems like a good excuse to me.”
“She doesn’t live here, Kate. She can’t just go check on something back home.”
“Oh…” Kate’s eyes widened in realization. “You think her mom’s gonna realize something’s up?”
“I know I would.”
“Yea, but you’re used to looking out for shiftiness in people. You have to do it on a daily basis to protect yourself and your job, so putting you in her mother’s shoes really isn’t a good comparison.”
“Would you think something was up?”
“Yes, but you’ve taught me--”
“Kate,” Kelly snapped.
She quickly closed her mouth.
“I’m sorry,” Kelly’s voice softened. She reached up, taking her face in her hands and pulled her down to kiss the top of her head. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to be harsh, I just…”
“You’re stressed. You have a lot to deal with right now.”
“Yea, but still, I shouldn’t take that out on you.”
“It’s ok, come see,” Kate wrapped her arms around her, holding her close. “You look like you need a hug.”
“I do,” Kelly agreed, leaning into the embrace.
“It’s all gonna be ok,” Kate assured, resting her chin on the top of the Texan’s head. “Which I know you don’t wanna hear, but that’s too bad because I’m gonna keep saying it.”
Kelly smiled softly, burying her face into Kate’s shirt at the feeling of tears forming in her eyes.
Kate rubbed her back soothingly.
“Do you think Care’s mom is going to realize that I stayed with her last night?”
“I think right now she’s going to be hyperaware of everything and be on high alert, so yea, I do think she’s going to realize something’s up.”
“The shit’s about to hit the fan,” Kelly mumbled.
Kate laughed, glancing up as the door to the stairwell opened.
Kelly’s jaw clenched at the feeling of Kate’s arms tightening around her protectively.
“Why hello there.”
“Hello Mrs. Underwood,” Kate replied tersely.
“There seems to be a problem with the elevators,” she smiled, studying the two of them curiously. “Now, I know Kelly, but you are?”
“I am just leaving,” Kate answered, feeling Kelly shaking with anger in her arms. “Come on, let’s go find some breakfast,” she urged gently to the singer, keeping a tight arm around her as she led her out of the stairwell and away from Carrie’s mother. “Well…if it wasn’t about to hit the fan before, it sure as hell is now.”
